Persevering Through a Pandemic and Beyond A

s the clock struck midnight on December 31, I think we were all looking forward to closing the book on the year 2020 and starting anew in 2021. As I reflect on 2020, I certainly will remember the challenges we faced, but I will also remember the opportunities that were seized. For Phi Eta Sigma, these opportunities can be found by looking at this past year’s national scholarship recipients, exploring how chapters found ways to connect while not being able to meet in traditional formats, and in remembering our first completely virtual convention. As an organization and as individuals, we found new ways to put our mission into practice while implementing new traditions, like our first national induction ceremony where we welcomed more than 5,000 new members!

“If the first goal here is to stop being ignorant, the second goal is just to learn more about one another” Emmanuel Acho

One of my favorite memories of 2020 was hearing our convention keynote speaker, Emmanuel Acho. With our convention theme of Breaking Barriers, I could not imagine we could have had a more perfect speaker to close our first night of the convention. Acho, a former NFL player and a current analyst for Fox Sports 1, was motivated to action after the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many others and the subsequent and continued protests for social and racial justice across the nation and world. Acho created a web series and authored a book both entitled “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man,” where he and guests discuss racism with honesty and vulnerability that pushes the audience to move past the un-comfortability and towards real and meaningful growth and understanding. He brought this earnestness with him to our convention, and we all benefited from him sharing his truth with us. In his book, Acho states, “If the first goal here is to stop being ignorant, the second goal is just to learn more about one another. And that can be a lot of fun.” I believe this ties in perfectly to our motto, “Knowledge is Power”, and I challenge each of you to seek out opportunities to learn and connect with one another as much as possible. This can be done locally within your chapter or through programming from the national office. As we move further into 2021, Phi Eta Sigma will be stronger as a result because we will gain not only knowledge and power, but also empathy and kindness.

I am excited to see this 2020 reflection come to life with this issue of The Forum, and I am thrilled to also look toward the future of Phi Eta Sigma as we move towards our centennial celebration. It will not be long before we gather in Birmingham in 2022 to celebrate our 100th anniversary. Please make sure that you stay connected with all of our plans by following us on social media, and I hope that you will all make plans to take part in the festivities! New Tradition Begins

35 Chapters Represented During First National Induction Ceremony The 2020 National Convention brought a new tradition to Phi Eta Sigma: a national induction ceremony. On Sunday, September 27, 2020, we welcomed 5,147 new members, as Phi Eta Sigma held its first national induction ceremony which was viewed more than 1500 times through the convention website and social media platforms. We had 35 chapters, representing each of the regions, inducting members during a ceremony conducted by the executive officers and advisor from The University of Alabama’s chapter. The program also featured a special message from Coach Patrick Murphy. Coach Patrick Murphy is a 1985 inductee of Phi Eta Sigma in the chapter at the University of Northern Iowa. Coach Murphy is the head coach of The University of Alabama’s softball team where he has led his team to 21 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, 12 Women’s College World Series appearances, and the 2012 NCAA National Championship.

Future Induction Ceremony Dates April 6 April 18 October 24 November 9

Coach Murphy’s teams also excel in the classroom with 26 Academic AllAmerican Honors and 234 SEC Honor Roll Selections. Coach Murphy spoke to the inductees on the importance of not letting your circumstances, including the pandemic, defeat you, but instead letting them develop you. He challenged attendees to develop into the person they are meant to be as a student and in life. This national induction ceremony was viewed as a large success and will be a new semi-annual tradition as we move toward our centennial celebration. In 2021, we will be conducting national induction ceremonies on April 6, April 18, October 24, and November 9.

New York Institute of Technology At the time coronavirus prompted the New York Institute of Technology to close in March 2020, the chapter was struggling to restart after multiple semesters of little-to-no action. The chapter pressed on holding virtual events on financial literacy and career search resources, as well as planning its first Virtual Induction Ceremony. Thanks to support from the national office, we were able to provide members with personalized digital certificates, and new members were able to use breakout rooms to get to know one another better. Following induction, the chapter then made the decision to double the amount of scholarship funding provided to students to award four students with $500 Local scholarships. Following the Spring Term, Phi Eta Sigma took advantage of the changing landscape of student engagement to re-brand itself with the following five pillars: Character, A Well-Cared For Body, Scholastic Excellence, Well-Disciplined Mind, and Fellowship. As a part of this new direction, the chapter began holding more regular general body meetings to provide scholarship information, tips for hybrid learning, and advice for thriving in this new setting. The chapter has also been able to hold a panel discussion for searching for jobs and internships and even invite back alumni to speak to current members. In keeping with this year’s philanthropy theme of literacy, the chapter ran a donation drive with Books For a Cause to send books to people in the Philippines. We ended the semester with another panel featuring professionals from different disciplines on how technology has aided their fields in adapting to life amidst a pandemic. In the future, we look forward to bringing in more featured speakers, creating opportunities to uplift our members in recognition for their accomplishments, and provide resources for student development. The most significant thing about our chapter is our students, and we aim to make everything we do highlight that fact.

University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg - Pennsylvania The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg chapter of Phi Eta Sigma strived to remain as active as possible during this year that was far from normal. Due to Covid-19, we were forced to adapt to changing restrictions, including canceling our in-person induction ceremony in April of 2020. We adjusted and did not let those restrictions keep us from being as active as possible. In September, we sponsored a socially-distanced “Meet & Greet” for the new members who didn’t have an induction ceremony. We also invited our new members and their families to participate in the virtual induction ceremony during the national convention, and some of our officers attended the convention sessions. Weekly Zoom meetings with officers and members were held to discuss our plans for the semester. We sponsored an outside creek clean-up on campus, and our annual Oktoberfest celebration. A campus favorite, we feared that Oktoberfest would not be possible this year, but with hard work, we were able to have many clubs on campus with different activity booths, music, and festive food, all while social distancing and wearing masks. And we did not stop there! Since we couldn’t hold our annual free luncheon for veterans in November, we organized a sock drive to accept donations of socks to take to the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Monmouth University - New Jersey The Monmouth University’s chapter of Phi Eta Sigma inducted 145 new members to its chapter on Friday, March 6, 2020. Chapter President Jessica Romanik welcomed the audience members which included the inductees, their families and friends, and faculty and staff of Monmouth University. In his remarks, Chapter Advisor Professor Dr. Golam M. Mathbor congratulated the new members for their achievement in qualifying for induction and praised them for demonstrating the leadership and character qualities necessary to achieve this kind of academic excellence in their first semester at Monmouth. Monmouth University President Dr. Patrick F. Leahy delivered the keynote address at the induction ceremony. In thanking the president, Mathbor presented Leahy with a plaque commemorating his participation. Dr. Nancy Mezey, Dean of the Honors School, also addressed the audience, congratulating them and all inductees have qualified

to join the Honors School. Mathbor recognized and thanked the Chapter Executive Board for their service and leadership. The officers are Jessica Romanik, President; Katherine Cahill, Vice President; Victoria Hernandez, Secretary; Nathan Heisey, Treasurer; and Rowan Elrais, Historian. In addition, he acknowledged the Induction Ceremony Committee: Dr. Nancy Mezey, Ms. Reenie Menditto, and Ms. Kate Sosnowski, all from the Honors School,

for their continued cooperation and generous support of Phi Eta Sigma. During the ceremony, the chapter also awarded six book prizes of $250 each to sophomore Burke Gray, juniors Emily Ciccolo, Noah Rottler-Gurley, Jillian McDonough, and Melissa Lauria. Executive Board members selected the winners after reviewing all the essays submitted by members for the competition.

Hampton University - Virginia Hampton University’s Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma from taking the campus by storm. The chapter worked tirelessly to transform their events for a virtual setting. This past semester the chapter hosted their very first virtual general body meeting, executive council election, community service event, and induction ceremony. Chapter President A’Lyrika Bowens, Recording Secretary Khyla Turner, and Faculty Advisor Dr. Fry Brown also attended the society’s first virtual national conference. In an effort to encourage and maintain member engagement the chapter hosted its first ever virtual community service event on September 23rd in honor of the society’s national day of service. The event entitled, “The Gift of Positivity” was a letter writing campaign established by the chapter to provide encouragement and support to local high students participating in online learning. With the help of the

executive council and a wonderful playlist event attendees worked for two hours to write at least ten letters each for the high school students. Throughout the event members were able to reminiscence on their high school years and share their experiences with other society members.

In the upcoming semester the chapter hopes to maintain their momentum through the creation of more virtual events and activity. The most anticipated events being their movie nights and chapter bonding events.

Old Dominion University - Virginia Our chapter has stayed active by holding monthly zoom meetings to stay informed and up to date on all Phi Eta Sigma activities. We also created an Instagram account to share news such as our winter clothing drive, charades zoom night, and other events. The officers maintain direct contact through text messages that allows us to be there for each other during this time. Our chapter is also planning a few different activities for next semester. First, we will be doing an interactive reading with elementary students through zoom. Secondly, we will partner with another honor society to do a canned food drive donation. Our members are most looking forward to contributing to our community and adding more members into our chapter.

Kennesaw State University - Georgia Kennesaw State University Chapter members hosted a variety of events during the 2019-2020 academic year, including monthly membership meetings that sometimes combined with social and service activities to yield maximum outcomes. However, even before the official start of a General Members’ meeting, the Phi Eta Sigma members were engaged in service to the campus. Fall 2019 marked the 13th year the Phi Eta Sigma Chapter served as hosts for KSU’s First-Year Convocation and Induction Ceremony, the culminating event for the Week of Welcome. Service opportunities continue to be the greatest attraction for members, who have a strong desire to give back to the campus and the communityat-large. Chapter members engaged in other fall projects designed to encourage the hearts of peers tackling midterm exams (“caught you studying” w/candy treats), as well as U.S. troops serving abroad (holiday greeting card-making). For the first time, the chapter launched its new members’ recruitment effort in December at the end of the fall term. Aided by the My Honor Society platform, the chapter was able to reach more than 1,600 prospective members among first-year students on the university’s

two campuses. Over 200 students

accepted the membership invitation, however, due to COVID-19, all PES activities after the end of February were cancelled. The last several months were definitely a sad time indeed, but our chapter looks forward to good times ahead.

Florida State University The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many challenges and new experiences to our chapter. We were first affected by the pandemic when we had to cancel our Spring 2020 Induction Ceremony and move our chapter entirely remote. For the first time in our chapter’s history, we finished the semester with no in-person events or meetings and the Executive Board/Leadership Council transition process was completed virtually with Zoom one-on-one meetings and a remote training to kick-off the 2020-2021 academic year. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, we have remained an active chapter participating in both virtual and socially distanced in-person events. We have utilized Zoom to hold various virtual events such as an informational “welcome meeting,” a resume workshop in collaboration with the FSU Career Center, and bingo and trivia nights. Our chapter’s leadership was able to attend the virtual National Convention where we participated in exciting learning opportunities and the virtual National Induction Ceremony. Our chapter’s new members were able to watch the ceremony live and see their names displayed on our Phi Eta Sigma website recognizing their induction into our chapter. We look forward to

hosting our own virtual Spring Induction Ceremony in March 2021. While this virtual platform has been vital in continuing our mission and staying connected with our members, we have also been able to allow for a few socially distanced in-person events. We held a food drive where over forty pounds of donations were given to FSU’s Food for Thought Pantry and hosted bi-monthly road

clean-ups of our adopted road. In the Spring, our chapter is looking forward to hosting virtual exercise classes, scholarship workshops, and continuing our ongoing service events both virtual and in-person. Editor’s Note: The T-Shirt Day event was conducted prior to the COVID-19 shutdown and subsequent safety measures.

University Nebraska - Kearney This September, the Phi Eta Sigma chapter helped our university’s American Democracy Project council’s voting drive initiative. Tables were set up outside the library to help students register to vote and create a plan on how to vote. Masks were required for people who picked up election material. Members of the chapter took shifts working the table to distribute materials. (In the attached photograph, Lyida Behnk, Phi Eta Sigma member and American Democracy Project representative, distributes voter registration material. Photo credit: Kosuke Yoshii) The UNK chapter of Phi Eta Sigma will promote literacy this academic year (2020-2021) by organizing, launching, and judging the first “Nebraska Emerging Writer Award” for high school students across the state. The chapter will encourage high school students

part of their life outside the classroom. Representing those experiences in the modes of poetry, short fiction, or an essay will give them shape and meaning

(grades 14-17) to make sense of these times through the act of writing. The theme of this year’s contest is “Nebraska in the Year 2020.” Students may submit essays, poems, or short stories. Phi Eta Sigma seeks to encourage high school students to record these extraordinary times and their place in it. We hope that thinking about, reflecting on and shaping their experience into the written word will prompt high school students to make writing a consistent

Phi Eta Sigma members contacted high school teachers across the state to inform them about the contest and encourage them to incorporate the writing topic into their curriculum. To encourage participation, Phi Eta Sigma members will write, create, and produce short videos on each of the genres (poetry, short fiction, personal essay) to educate others and post them to the chapter website in December. The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2021. By engaging in this service activity, students in the chapter are learning how to build networks, create an advertising campaign, manage submissions, and create committees of judges to choose winners, and devise selection criteria.

Texas A&M University Texas A&M University responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by making all meetings and events virtual. We chose not to jeopardize our members or their family’s health during these times, and had to think of creative ways for our members to interact. Fortunately, our meetings conducted through Zoom have had a

very positive response without causing any problems for our members. For student activities, we have hosted virtual study sessions, an online book donation for philanthropy, a pumpkin carving contest, a sharing recipe social and many other events to keep our members active while being safe for everyone. We are really proud of how we were able to transition all events, and hope to continue safe practices in the future.

12 | FORUM of Phi Eta Sigma, 2021

For upcoming plans , our number

one priority will still be the students’ health. Until the pandemic is completely over, we will continue to keep all of our events and meetings virtual. Our officers will strive for more creative ways to keep our members active and have fun with our new members. What we look forward to the most is bringing more opportunities to our members to help the city of College Station, Texas. We always look forward to helping the community every semester.

Kansas State University The Kansas State University chapter of Phi Eta Sigma has embarked on the unusual 2020-21 school year in an adaptive and positive way. We think now more than ever is a time when encouraging and constructive contributions to our campus and out community matter. We started the year with an Induction Ceremony celebrating our 26 new members. We elected a new slate of officers and advisers, and we made plans for the academic year. One of our key decisions was to respond to COVID-19 by organizing, working, and celebrating remotely when possible. We held our Induction remotely and joined the National Induction Ceremony in September remotely as well. Our Executive Committee meets via Zoom as well, and our organizing and professional development efforts have all been taking place via Zoom. Given the increased needs of our campus and community (sharpened dramatically by the pandemic) and given the increased difficulty of organizing in-person events, we also made the decision to focus our philanthropic

activities this year on supporting important and established charitable efforts. Through both service and giving to these established charities, we are hoping that our philanthropic contributions will make the most beneficial impact on those most in need in our community and on our campus.

Missouri State University Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the Missouri State University chapter of Phi Eta Sigma has been able to remain very active! We are conducting our chapter meetings over Zoom, and we have offered multiple social events utilizing this platform as well. Throughout this semester, we have stayed connected through virtual game nights and movie nights, and we were even able to participate in a virtual escape room to celebrate Halloween! We have also hosted outdoor events that allowed people to interact in-person while remaining socially distant. In addition, our chapter has participated in several service projects to allow us to give back to our community during these challenging times. We have partnered with various organizations that offer us the opportunity to serve independently while working towards a common goal. For example, we are working with a local hospice organization to create greeting cards that can be given to their patients! Members decorate cards on their own time and then either mail them in or drop them off in our office so we can turn in all of the cards together. At Missouri State, we are looking forward to the coming year. We plan to continue hosting both virtual and outdoor events to offer our members as many opportunities as possible while also ensuring their safety. In particular, we are looking forward to our

annual Induction ceremony this spring, which we will be conducting online due to social distancing concerns. We are excited to continue discovering new ways to manage this pandemic while also growing in all areas!

University of Texas - Austin 2020 has been an exceptional year for UT Austin. In spring, we hosted a 200-person induction ceremony shortly before COVID-19. Although unable to host our new member picnic, we scanned and emailed all membership certificates. In May, we awarded two scholarships to members with COVID-19 related financial need and donated to NAACP in support of racial justice. We also sold officercreated, laserprinted wooden keychains and hope to resume production in 2021. In summer, we hosted 15 virtual orientation info sessions, sending emails and making Hornslink and social media posts. 300+ attendees viewed our officer-created spring promotional video. Following up with an activities survey, we added more social and service opportunities. This fall, we held bi-weekly, 20-participant member meetings and weekly Zoom office hours. Social events included virtual game nights, a comedy night, gettingto-know-you gatherings, and an escape room. We plan to repeat the popular game nights in the spring.

Chapter-led service activities included e-book editing, Zooniverse environmental projects, hosting a donation drive for Inside Books Project, two socially-distanced profit shares, making hygiene kits, tutoring, and making cards for nursing home residents. One highlight was attending the virtual PES National Conference. Another highlight was hosting a virtual 90th anniversary celebration of UT PES’s chartering. Despite advance planning, we pivoted by sending emails and social media posts. A PowerPoint presentation of PES history kicked off the event. We premiered a new

14 | FORUM of Phi Eta Sigma, 2021

promotional video of former officers sharing their involvement with PES and plan to use it for future events. Current officers shared their experiences live and led Kahoot and pins-in-ajar-guessing activities. We awarded three prizes for event participation. Instead of hosting our end of semester banquet, we emailed three raffle prizes, sent member points updates, and awarded two scholarships. We hope to increase membership engagement in 2021 through profit shares, scholarships, fundraising, and social media!

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma stayed engaged, flexible in accommodating the changing times, and responded consciously and cautiously to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. We kept monthly chapter meeting attendance high and interactions meaningful in the face of the pandemic through Microsoft Teams. Events and projects were made available asynchronously to keep members safe. By actively participating in PES meetings and functions, members earn points towards a medallion at commencement. We were creative in thinking of different ways for members to earn points whether they were on campus or not. We encouraged individual community involvement and asked our members to bring their achievements back and share virtually. Our communication skills were elevated by checking & responding to emails in

a timely manner, setting up multiple meetings, calling a last minute ‘zoom’ to confirm ideas and make sure the officers were all sending the same message to our membership. We were cognizant to present events and meetings that were fun & engaging. Aside from icebreakers, we added interactive Kahoot games to have fun while being competitive with each other. UWGB Associate Professor Joan Groessl, Social Work, presented “Stress & Self-Care” at a chapter meeting. Our functions for the F20 semester included participation in the National Convention Literacy Project with book and monetary donations to SAYL, Howe Elementary in Green Bay, and Green Bay Literacy; ‘socially distanced’ Adopt-A-Highway for highway cleanup in Brown County; Pocket Flag Project for our Veterans; Season of Giving notes which were given to homebound

friends and family. Our year-end chapter meeting “PES Festive Fiesta” is scheduled for December 8th. It will include a recap of the semester, Kahoot, and end with a Netflix Holiday Party! Plans for the upcoming semester and the 20-21 academic year include [1] a repeat of the Pocket Flag Project, [2] spring Adopt-A-Highway cleanup which is always a well-received interactive event that allows members to get to know each other while helping the environment, [3] Uncle Mike’s Kringle Sale, [4] more virtual events and community service projects. We always look forward to new ideas and activities that members bring for discussion. We plan to make the most of our PES experience and will accomplish all of this while abiding by our campus pandemic policies as we beat COVID together, and stay happy and healthy as a chapter.

Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis

Like many chapters, IUPUI has stayed active mostly through Zoom since so many students have been away from campus since the middle of March. The officers held weekly virtual meetings, and we were able to interview and select new officers in April via Zoom. We continued to meet throughout the summer to make the transition with the new officers and plan the fall semester. We have held monthly member meetings during fall semester with guest speakers covering the topics of campus career services, planning a study abroad experience, and how to prepare a winning application for IUPUI’s Top 100 Students competition.

We started each meeting with a fun activity like showing off our pets and playing Kahoot for e-gift cards. Although all officer and member meetings had to be virtual, we were able to engage in a few in-person small service and social events. Our members volunteered throughout the semester at a local school corporation sorting 43,000 books for distribution to students, and we also are volunteering at Teachers’ Treasures where K-12 teachers can pick up free supplies for their students and classrooms. We also held a book drive and collected over 100 books for the organization.

16 | FORUM of Phi Eta Sigma, 2021

Many of our members had some fun in October by volunteering with Indy Parks at their annual Hauntless Halloween event by serving as trail leaders and campfire assistants. This was our 12th year of helping out with this event, although it was scaled back from three nights to one this year. We also held a socially-distanced outdoor Picnic and Pumpkins event with pumpkins for everyone to paint or carve. In addition, we had quite a few members attend the national convention. Over the semester break, we’ll be working on creative ways to engage students in a mostly virtual environment next semester!

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign The Alpha Chapter at The University of Illinois has continued to amaze me in its resilience of the COVID-19 pandemic. All of our chapter leaders have found alternative ways to carry on with providing meaningful events for our members. With a move to the virtual format, we have been able to connect closely even from our own homes. Opportunities to give back individually or as a community have been made available thanks to our service chairs who have worked tirelessly to find ways to give back even if we are all not present at once. Our social chair has hosted online game nights and even virtual pumpkin painting to give members a break from their regularlyscheduled Zoom classes. We are so proud of our team as well as our members who continue to show up for themselves and for others in this unconventional time. Next year, we are hoping this sense of unity continues to carry on as we hope to incorporate more in-person activities pending hopeful news of a vaccine. We thank our Faculty Advisor, Neil Baer, for his trusted support during a

time where much of our routines as an organization have been altered. The Alpha Chapter is excited to see what the Spring semester and rest of 2021 bring for our members!

Purdue University - Indiana Purdue University has a combined Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma chapter. Last spring, 389 new members joined just as Covid-19 was making its presence known. Although we had planned a wonderful induction ceremony for March 29, the majority of students left campus that week and all campus activities were canceled. We usually have officer interviews in April, but since most students were no longer on campus, we waited until early May and conducted over thirty interviews using Zoom! We hated not to be able to see our candidates in person, but more of our officers could participate in the interviews. Unfortunately, being apart didn’t allow for our two officer transition meetings before the semester ended.

Once the 2020-2021 school year started, the new officers created a GroupMe, and we decided to have in-person officer meetings bi-weekly. Challenges we faced included bans on going off campus for anything—for a dinner/retreat, service projects, or social activities. Additionally, we couldn’t have any campus activities with over 50 people. The new officers didn’t let these barriers get them down! As we end this semester, our chapter is proud that we have participated in the Phi Eta Sigma national convention and induction ceremony, held two all member virtual meeting/presentations—one on resume writing by our Career Center and the other on coping strategies by our Counseling Center, and we participated in two campus service projects, including a holiday project that involved purchasing gifts for low income children in the community. The officers have shown enthusiasm, resilience, and perseverance, and we expect more good things next semester!

Brigham Young University - Utah Our chapter normally meets every month with alternating service and social events. To accommodate the restrictions due to COVID-19, we have continued our monthly events virtually. Although this has limited our interactions, we have embraced the benefits of being online by connecting to members living across the country or those who normally do not attend. We have tried to replicate in person events by putting people in groups to get to know each other better. Our most recent activity was a service activity. We worked with United Way and recorded ourselves reading children’s books to help provide educators with virtual reading resources. Finding service projects to do at a distance has been difficult, but it was so fun to give back in a safe way. As many students and teachers

are adjusting to online learning, we hope our videos bring some excitement to the classrooms and help students maintain their literacy skills. Looking forward, we are super excited for our Questival event in the spring. This will allow our members to team up and work together virtually for

the ultimate scavenger hunt. We have spent so much time inside this year, and this event will get people outside and exploring. This team building experience will allow members to get to know each other in a unique and different way as they work together through different challenges.

University of Puget Sound Welcome to 2020! Not what anyone had planned on, but UPS Loggers are versatile! As a chapter, we have had to re-imagine how we operate. We have done our group meetings virtually, with pretty good attendance – we had a guest speaker at one, did a trivia contest at another, and will be writing notes of encouragement to a local hospital at our last meeting of the semester, which will then be printed and taken to a local children’s hospital for them to post for their workers and patients! Instead of our annual “Fun in the Fall” event, which has been pumpkin and cookie decorating, we went virtual with that, too: We

challenged our members to decorate their own pumpkins, and then gave prizes (gift cards) to winners for “Most Creative”, “Most Technical”, and “Scariest”! We also combined our Spring Induction (which we had hoped to move to in-person in the fall) and our Fall Induction to a virtual format, with a special speaker, Dean of Students, and honorary PES member, Dr. Uchenna Baker. We are hoping, of course, that Spring 2021 will return us to normal

operations, but we are also not counting on it! We will adapt, and plan great events as best we can! I know we are not the only ones learning so much more about technology than we ever thought we would need!

$10,000 Thomas Arkle Clark

Scholar-Leader of the Year Award

Dean Clark, dean of men at the University of Illinois and Senator of Phi Beta Kappa, was one of the three founders of Phi Eta Sigma and our first Grand President, serving from 1927 to 1933.

2020-2021 Scholar-Leader Favour Akinjiyan

The fifteenth recipient of the Thomas Arkle Clark ScholarLeader of the Year Award is Favour Akinjiyan of the New York Institute of Technology chapter. Favour is currently pursuing dual MD/PhD degrees at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MTSP), which provides training in both medicine and research. She obtained her undergraduate degree from NYIT with a major in life sciences, where she was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma in the spring of 2013. Favour’s service to her chapter was exemplary, serving first in the office of secretary and later as president for two years, helping revitalize their local chapter. During her time on the executive board, she helped facilitate service projects for the chapter with Relay for Life of the American Cancer Society. She stated that her main goal while President was to motivate students to maintain high academic grades while additionally increasing membership retention by creating new programming opportunities and mentorship initiatives. Even after she left NYIT, Favour remained connected to the chapter, helping to transition the new executive board members, always answering any questions they had. She has also been invited back by the chapter since beginning her graduate studies to discuss post-graduate opportunities in STEM related fields. Her continued dedication to Phi Eta Sigma was previously recognized in 2014 and 2018 when she was awarded the Raymond E. Glos undergraduate scholarship award and the Kendrick C. Babcock graduate scholarship award from Phi Eta Sigma.

Favour began her medical studies at Washington University in 2018, where she spent the first two years of school studying the foundational classes in medicine including anatomy and physiology and various organ systems. In summer of 2020, she joined the Department of Oncology to conduct research for her thesis on ovarian cancer therapeutics for the next 3-4 years. Upon defending her thesis, Favour will then embark on clinical rotations in her chosen medical specialty to learn the art of patient care and diagnosis. She chose to pursue the dual PhD/MD track

because of the unique opportunity to serve at the interface of patient care and scientific discovery. Throughout her career, she plans to conduct research that will increase our understanding of disease etiology with the aim of contributing to therapeutic interventions. She also plans to continue using her platform to mentor and encourage underrepresented minorities to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers. When asked what advice she would give to herself when she was starting out as a freshman at NYIT, Favour said “Work hard, but stay calm. Undergrad was such an anxiety-inducing time for me, and all the things I stressed about incessantly ultimately turned out to be fine.

Not only did I get to work with and meet so many awesome people, I also walked away with extensive leadership knowledge,” said Kody. Looking back on his time as an undergraduate student, Kyle shared one piece of advice he would’ve given to his freshman-year self. “Don’t be afraid to move out of your comfort zone. National Convention Recap

We Broke Barriers in More Ways than One for 2020 Convention The 2020 National Convention of Phi Eta Sigma taking place on September 25-27 was unique in many ways as it was the first in our organization’s history to take place via a virtual platform. This convention was originally planned to take place in San Antonio, TX, however the COVID-19 global pandemic led the national Executive Committee to move the event to an online format. Through the online platform, we were allowed to eliminate all fees and offer convention programming to all members and advisors free of charge. With a theme of Breaking Barriers and more than 460 registrants, the convention was an opportunity for members and advisors to gather together to learn, to serve, and to connect. We worked to preserve the traditions of previous conventions with our opening ceremonies, committee work and business meetings, and our national service project. We also sought opportunities to instill new components to the program including a keynote speaker, featuring Phi Eta Sigma alumni as session presenters, and our first national induction ceremony.

Friday Sessions On Friday, September 25, 2020, Grand Vice President Tim Lemper called the 2020 Phi Eta Sigma National Convention to order via the convention website. On

36 | FORUM of Phi Eta Sigma, 2021

behalf of President Molly Lawrence, Tim Lemper brought greetings from the National Executive Committee and welcomed all attendees to this historic convention. Mary Lee Caldwell, Phi Eta Sigma’s Executive Director provided an overview of the weekend’s activities, and then the program was turned over to President Emeritus John Harrell who conducted the convention’s official roll call featuring a presentation of the mascots of the 78 chapters in attendance. At the conclusion of the Opening Ceremony, attendees were encouraged to network with each other and attend the afternoon’s breakout sessions. Our National Convention breakout sessions took place on Friday afternoon following the opening ceremony. There were three different blocks with multiple options for attendees to choose from. Some examples of topics that were available in each session were how to host a regional conference, diving deeper into our philanthropic mission on literacy, and a job and internship search 101 talk from a corporate recruiter. Student Executive Committee Members Alyssa Kane, Kody Klumb, and Kyle Klumb were featured presenters in multiple sessions leading discussions on topics ranging from civil discourse to personal financial literacy. Block B was unique, as we offered career panels in five different fields with sixteen Phi Eta Sigma alumni volunteering their time to answer questions from student attendees. While these panels were occurring, advisors also had the opportunity to participate in a virtual breakout discussion with our chapter service coordinators, which was very beneficial to all who participated.

Keynote The 2020 Phi Eta Sigma convention featured a The keynote presentation of the convention featured Emmanuel Acho as our keynote speaker. A

graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Acho is a former NFL player, current analyst for Fox Sports 1, and the creator and host of the webseries,“Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man”. Emmanuel spoke on social justice issues facing our nation as Ada Ruth Huntley, a Phi Eta Sigma member at Auburn University, moderated the session. Emmanuel spoke to how we have to be okay with getting uncomfortable and stepping out of our comfort zone to learn from others and about their culture. Acho and HuntleyHuntley brought a sense of hope and thoughtfulness throughout the session. The had all attendees glued to their screens for this engaging conversation. Here what Ada Ruth had to say about hosting

and moderating Emmanuel Acho. Ada Ruth: It was such an honor to interview someone as accomplished and as wise as Emmanuel Acho. He is incredibly personal and insightful, and I learned so much from him during our interview as a part of the Phi Eta Sigma conference. He talked a lot about his experiences throughout his lifetime that contributed to the establishment of “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man,” and it was so neat to get some insight into the inspiration behind that series. Additionally, he highlighted the book that he has authored in partnership with Oprah in addition to the other incredible opportunities he has been awarded as a result of this series. I was inspired by his presentation, and I took away the fact that you never

know what can come out of using your voice to inspire others. I learned to take the leap of faith because your voice and your experiences can be incredibly powerful in helping others.

Sunday Sessions Sunday programming at the Convention included roundtable discussions on how to Break Barriers on our campuses and our first National Induction Ceremony, and we concluded with our final business meeting. Grand VicePresident Tim Lemper presided over the business meeting, where we heard reports from the Constitution and Scholarship Committee and the Nominations Committee. Executive Director Mary Lee Caldwell presented Distinguished Service Awards to Tim Lemper of Indiana University, Bloomington and Teri Ternes of the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. Caldwell also thanked all of the convention presenters, volunteers, chapter advisors, members of the national executive committee and headquarters staff for their service to Phi Eta Sigma. While we were not able to establish a quorum at the meeting to allow for votes to take place, the recommendations of both committees were sent to the National Executive Committee for review. In a follow-up chapter vote, the Constitution and Scholarship’s recommendation to amend the constitution to add two alumni members the National Executive Committee was approved. The National Executive Committee is currently working to establish election procedures for these positions. Additionally, in two follow up votes with chapters, the Nominations Committee reports were adopted. This included the election of the following: Grand Vice-President: Tim Lemper, Indiana University Bloomington Advisors: Tony Kemp, Mercer University and Lisa Ruch, Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis Alternate Advisor: Golam Mathbor, Monmouth University Students Members: Lindsey Jorgenson, Brigham Young University; Nick Swanson, The Catholic University of America; and Unnathi Nayak, Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis

2022 Announcement As the 2020 Phi Eta Sigma Convention concluded, the National Executive Committee and Headquarters Staff were pleased to announce the location for the 2022 Convention as Birmingham, Alabama. The announcement included welcome messages from Governor Kay Ivey and Mayor Randall Woodfin. Phi Eta Sigma has a rich history within Alabama as the state was home to our first national headquarters in Auburn and our current headquarters in Tuscaloosa. Alabama is also home to seven active PES chapters across the state. This convention will kick-off Phi Eta Sigma’s centennial celebration in the fall of 2022. Stay up to date with the national office and its social media platforms for the latest concerning the convention and our 100th anniversary.

Service is Power

Philanthropy at the 2020 National Convention Phi Eta Sigma’s national philanthropic mission to promote literacy efforts took center stage at this year’s convention as we continue to embrace and answer the call of service to members of our communities who are in need. A decade ago, at the 2010 National Convention, the delegates determined there would be a philanthropic project in connection with the theme and location of each convention moving forward. This year, we partnered with the San Antonio Youth Literacy Foundation to do a national book and stuffed animal drive that we encouraged all of our chapters to participate in. The 2020 National Convention’s philanthropic projects were focused on breaking down the barriers to literacy. While these projects may have looked a little different this year with the virtual nature of the convention, we were committed to seeing our service promise through and encouraged each of our chapters to organize and execute a project within their local communities. There were three levels of involvement outlined for chapters and members to participate. The first two levels delegates could choose to participate in were at the individual and local chapter level through our Day of Service that took place on the Saturday of Convention weekend. There were no national events planned for this day, leaving time for members to work with their chapters to plan a service project in

the community or contributing at the individual level in some way. One example of a project completed on our Day of Service was from our Hampton University chapter, who gave “the gift of positivity” to local high school students. Recognizing

the unique and unprecedented challenges high school student’s faced this year due to the pandemic, HU’s chapter chose to give back by having their chapter members write letters of encouragement to be given to students in the senior class of Woodside High School

in the neighboring city of Newport News, Virginia. With many college tours, high school visitation days, and collegiate orientation programs forced to be cancelled or moved online, Hampton’s chapter was able to provide these students with hope and optimism to continue their academic journeys. The third and final level of philanthropic participation was at the national level by donating to the headquarters book, stuffed animal, and monetary donation drive for the San Antonio Youth Literacy (SAYL) Foundation. We were overwhelmed at the response of our chapters to this effort, as we received 52 stuffed animals, 272 children’s books, and $2,600 in donations to give to SAYL. We are so grateful to all who participated and are encouraged by our chapter member’s continued support of Literacy as our national philanthropy.

Convention Contest for Chapters The virtual nature of this year’s convention called for a little creativity in how we recognized our chapter’s philanthropic efforts. It was decided that we would sponsor a chapter competition where they could submit a 500 word summary of their chapters philanthropic work related to literacy promotion for a chance to win $500 for their chapter’s continued service efforts. We received many outstanding submissions from our chapters. After they were reviewed, it was decided that Syracuse University would be the winner of the contest and recipient of the $500 award for their service efforts. Syracuse worked diligently the past year to support literacy promotion efforts in their local community. We would also like to extend a special thank you and recognition to the following chapters who participated in the contest: The University of Alabama, Hampton University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, McKendree University, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, New Mexico State University, The University of Texas at Austin, the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay, and Western Kentucky University.

When the Tables are Turned

Serving on the Nominations Committee Story provided by A’Lyrika Bowens, Hampton University Chapter President and Mary Jo Custer, Syracuse University Chapter Adviser and Grand Historian Phi Eta Sigma provides a multitude of experiences to its members one of which is serving on the Convention Committees. Each convention offers the opportunity to serve on the Constitution and Scholarship Committee and the Nominations Committee. These groups are essential to the work of our organization. Nominations Committee Chair, A’lyrica Bowens, and Grand Historian, Mary Jo Custer, provide an in-depth look into the work and experience of serving on the Nominations Committee below. Several Phi Eta Sigma members learned what the experience was like when they chose the National Executive Committee Members for the next several years. They experienced it from the ground up and learned what it was like to become trailblazers and change agents from the interviewer side of the table. This year – 2020 - has been a mark of change and continued to be so within the Nominations Committee. There were, in fact, two Nominations Committees – one during the 2020 Convention which choose the two Faculty Advisors at large (Tony Kemp, Mercer University and Lisa Ruch, IUPUI), and an alternate (Mabor, Monmouth University), Grand Vice President (Tim Lemper, Indiana University), and two student members (Nick Swanson, The Catholic University of America and Lindsey Jorgensen, Brigham Young University); and a second after the convention to choose one additional

student (Unnati Nayak, IUPUI) and two alternates (Sydney Helgeson and Preston McGee, both of University of Alabama). In total, there were twentyseven applicants for nine positions, and each interview was scheduled for thirty minutes. You add it up, along with advance meetings, planning, and deliberations, and there was a lot of time, energy, and communication that occurred. But in the end, well worth it, both for the results for the future of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and the education and experience for the Nominations Committee and others involved. The Nominations Committees Members (henceforth the Committee) were immensely passionate to pick the best candidates and to do so in the appropriate manner. The members later used terms such as respectful, active listeners, organized, use of time management in describing what made the Committee successful in working

together. This thread was woven throughout the process. Most of the Committee had interview experience, but as A’Lyrika Bowens, Chair of the second Committee and member of the first (Hampton University Chapter President) stated “it was the longest interview period that I have participated in, yet it was the most impactful. The time I spent with my fellow Phi Eta Sigma members was representative of both personal and collaborative growth.” In Student Engagement Offices on our campuses we hear the helpful hints from Career Centers, Internship Placement, and other offices all pertaining to the importance of details, following instructions, be aware of non-verbal’s, dress appropriately, and the do’s and don’ts even for virtual interviews. In addition, be aware of the other professional items in the virtual world – what is your background like, if you have a roommate then communicate to them to be respectful,

if you have a pet then follow through to have them occupied for the time of your interview, and have your phone on silent. Phi Eta Sigma continues to push forward while giving back. The Committee has several words of advice for those who are applying for scholarships, jobs, and who are successful to make it to the interview stage. Shannon Lamb, University of Wisconsin – Platteville, encourages everyone to “complete the entire application before submitting it and treat the interview process like a job interview. If you do not get the position, do not get discouraged; find other ways to get involved!” Shelby Summer, McKendree University, inspires applicants “to be yourself. You can never go wrong with being yourself. The Committee wants to see your personality shine through. Answer each question to your best ability, and let your personality and experiences do the rest of

the work.” Danielle Mueting stated that this “was a huge learning experience.”

in mass quantities of creativity and bring nothing but positive results.”

Several members would encourage all members, in particular those who may be at inactive chapters in regard to activities, to take the initiative to seek out opportunities for involvement, whether it be through virtual sessions or through committees, etc.. You need to stretch your comfort zone to trudge through new territory to lay the pathway to your next journey. All chapters are encouraged to hold programs and meetings, collaborate with other student organizations or even other chapters, sponsor service activities and discuss ideas for members to do in their own communities, market what is happening throughout Phi Eta Sigma. Although the national convention had a record number of delegates – more students could have reaped the benefits. As Mueting stated an increase in attendance “would bring

The Committee learned that when the tables are turned one can see the essential ingredients in a successful candidate which includes the full recipe – application and interview together – and all the candidates have something to offer. The Committee acknowledged that if all the candidates, this year and perhaps those who are thinking about the next time, continued their involvement locally, encouraged their chapter activities and service activities, that the three elements which we pride ourselves having – vigorous and disciplined mind, well-cared for body and character, our members would continue to thrive and be prepared to face the next challenges and welcome in our centennial convention in 2022.
