PRESIDENT’S LETTER WE WENT INTO 2020 knowing it would be a year like no other, and friends, we were right. Early on in the pandemic, our members, volunteers, staff, and I were saddened that the year would not go according to plan. For Phi Delta Theta, those blows came in slowly. First, we saw Founders Day celebrations start canceling across the country. Soon we sent our staff to work remotely for what we thought would be a month, and then as time went on, the blows hit harder and quicker as universities sent our members home from their campuses. Finally, we decided to delay our General Convention and our pinnacle summer event, the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute. As these realizations tested our members and our staff, we paused to remember these words: Since 1848. For more than 170 years, this brotherhood has encountered wars, civil unrest, economic turmoil, and other pandemics. And since 1848, we have not only survived in the face of adversity, but we have thrived. The coronavirus pandemic has proven to be no different. We attribute our success to two things: (1) the resiliency of our student leaders, and (2) you. I cannot begin to express the deep gratitude that I As these have for your support in my first year as president of realizations the Foundation and executive vice president of the tested our Fraternity. Your loyalty and friendship allowed us to not members and our only persevere through this pandemic but to succeed staff, we paused and come out stronger. As I look back on the countless to remember hours of Zoom calls with volunteers and chapters, the these words: many reimagined educational programs, and the creative Since 1848. chapter planning that turned our in-person activities into a virtual brotherhood, I am humbled to know that it was all possible because of your generous donations to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation. Please accept my most sincere thanks for supporting us this year.

Yours in the Bond,

Sean S. Wagner, President

Phi Delta Theta Foundation 2020 Annual Report

AS CURRENT PRESIDENT OF my chapter, the Phi Delt experience has been one of extreme personal growth and nothing short of unforgettable. Starting as a newly initiated brother after going through recruitment during summer 2018, I have built valuable memories and connections. I have served my chapter as communications chairman and president. Serving in these positions has given me leadership skills and responsibilities that I’m positive will translate into the real world. Even through tough times such as the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been able to rely on my brothers and help lead the Florida Kappa Chapter to new heights, even winning the 2020 Outstanding IFC President of the Year for FSL. The Phi Delta Theta experience is truly one I would not replace with anything, and one I will continue to live out daily. André Caputo, FIU ’22

Phi Delta Theta Foundation 2020 Annual Report

WE ARE TWO PHIKEIAS from the New York Mu Emerging Chapter at LIU Post in beautiful Upper Brookville, New York. At first, the idea of being founding members of a fraternity was very apprehensive. We didn’t know what the future would bring us nor what we were signing up for. However, through our expansion adviser’s guidance, he trained us to become the greatest versions of ourselves as the leaders of our chapter. After a few short weeks of training together, the rest was history, and we instantly became friends. Whether it’s the weekly photoshoots or the countless video game sessions, we have an inseparable bond that we solely owe to Phi Delta Theta. Through facing obstacles and learning to deal with differing personalities, we have learned a lot about leadership and what our positions mean for the future of New York Mu. We can honestly say that being a part of this fraternity has been both challenging yet rewarding at the same time. Since we are an emerging chapter, we are the new boys on the block, and therefore it is difficult to establish a reputation and a good one on top of it. However, we feel that with us two at the helm, Phi Delt will undoubtedly become the biggest and best fraternity that LIU has ever seen. As I’m sure all of you are, we certainly are Proud to be Phis! Phi Delta Theta Foundation 2020 Annual Report

FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE Ohio Epsilon Chapter. Throughout my time in Phi Delta Theta, I have made so many unforgettable memories and connections that I do not think that I will ever forget. My chapter, specifically throughout the last year, has pushed through much adversity. Between COVID-19 and the loss of one of our brothers, we have worked through everything together. Overcoming these challenges really brought me closer to my brothers. They have become a significant part of my undergraduate experience, and they will continue to be a major part of my entire life. Although this is not really how I imagined my time in college, these men and the support I have gotten from them and our alumni have built me into the man and the leader that I am today, and I wouldn’t want to change it for anything! The Phi Delta Theta experience is very valuable for all young college men. It is a place for these men to continue to become the greatest versions of themselves. Brandon Counts, Akron ’21

MY PHI DELTA THETA membership has taught me many important lessons about leadership and teamwork. As an Emerging Chapter, we have many tasks to complete in a short period regarding Phikeia education, recruitment, and much more. As president of my chapter (ND Beta), I have become a better organizer and facilitator for chapter business. I look forward to my future with this organization and have already grown as a person enormously. The Phi Delt experience is a treasure trove for a young college man. The leadership experience, networking, and friends you make all push you to be the greatest version of yourself. Connor Crago, NDSU ’23

Phi Delta Theta Foundation 2020 Annual Report

I BELIEVE THE PHI Delt experience is valuable to young men for a few reasons. I have already seen how Phi Delt has helped young men build friendships that will last a lifetime while also encouraging them to develop their academic and leadership abilities. I am particularly proud of the relationship between our Vchapter, Miami University, and the LiveLikeLou Foundation. We were lucky enough to get a meeting with the Miami University president in October of 2020. During our discussion, we talked about the history of Phi Delta Theta, what our emerging chapter has done so far to differentiate itself from other chapters on campus, and with which charitable organization Phi Delta Theta aligns. When talking about the LiveLikeLou Foundation, Miami’s president expressed interest in helping the effort against ALS. At this point, he mentioned that if the Ohio Alpha Emerging Chapter of Phi Delta Theta set a fundraising goal, Miami University would match it dollar for dollar. We agreed on a total fund of $200,000, with the initial $100,000 coming from fundraising dollars through the Ohio Alpha Emerging Chapter and the other $100,000 from the Miami University match pledge. The total fund will then be used on Miami’s campus to help jumpstart an initiative to advance the fight against ALS. The fund will be the first grant of its kind in the history of Miami University, and it is something of which the entire chapter is honored to be a part. Alex Kalix, Miami ’22

Phi Delta Theta Foundation 2020 Annual Report

THE STORY I AM most proud of with our organization is our chapter’s path to installation. As the California Omega Emerging Chapter of Phi Delta Theta, we almost closed down not once but twice. Initially, our expansion consultants attempted to recruit twenty men to form the chapter. Santa Clara’s Greek system is off-campus primarily, so it was not conducive to recruitment. The consultants left after two months, having recruited only six members. Some of us (like me) were going abroad the next quarter. It didn’t look good. Instead of giving up, however, we called in on Skype and Zoom (before the pandemic!) and met virtually while those on campus recruited the rest of the guys. We eventually did meet our number and were finally inducted in January 2020. It made us feel accomplished, but we were just getting started as we had our eyes set on installation and fast. But just as we were gaining steam, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and canceled all of our plans. Lots of guys thought we would never get back on track, and a few lost hope. Again, we pulled together, made a plan, and held each other accountable because we all wanted to accomplish this together. After two successful formal recruitment events and a plethora of virtual brotherhood events, we recruited another fifteen members and put together a chapter advisory board, and established many functions of our chapter (entirely from scratch!) on our own. As a result, we positioned ourselves to be ready for installation on April 10, 2021. I’m so proud of this story because it demonstrates how all of the guys here knew that Phi Delt is something special and committed to being fully a part of the organization. Through hardships and adversity, we have learned here at California Omega to hold fast to the Cardinal Principles of Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude to create a lasting impact on our campus. I think the Phi Delt experience is so valuable for young men because it provides you with tools to thrive in college and life. From problem-solving to networking, my experience has lent itself in so many ways that constantly make me so thankful that I joined Phi Delt.

MY NAME IS AHMED Qureshi, Embry-Riddle 2020, and I decided to join Phi Delta Theta in fall 2018. Before I joined, I struggled with the transition from military life to civilian and wanted to find another close-knit brotherhood. At the time, I didn’t see myself being successful after graduation and didn’t have any goals to work towards. One of my best friends convinced me to join Phi Delt, and the experience helped me develop as an adult. The Fraternity challenged me to study harder and improve my grades and helped me realize the full potential of my college experience. I am now a Dean’s List recipient and am preparing to continue to graduate school after graduation. The Phi Delta Theta experience helps develop young men with morally good cardinal principles and provides resources to ensure pre- and post-graduation success. Ahmed Qureshi, Embry-Riddle ’20
