he mission of the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy is to prepare students to become pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists who are leaders in any setting. The College provides a quality education that effectively integrates critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills. Research in the pharmaceutical, social, and clinical sciences and its translation into health care is a key component of our mission. The College achieves its mission by striving for excellence in education, service, and research, all directed toward enhancing the health and quality of life of the people of the State of Michigan, the nation, and the international community.

WELCOME

F

iscal year 2016 was especially strong for the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. The College was reaffirmed as a national leader in the U.S. News and World Report rankings; eight new faculty members joined the College; the FDA awarded more than $4 million for drug delivery research to the College; faculty were recognized for their outstanding achievements at the University and nationally; over 60% of the graduating PharmDs were accepted into residencies and fellowships; two PhD candidates were honored with prestigious Rackham Predoctoral Fellowships.

We had tough times as well with the passing of Professor Emeritus James Richards and Assistant Dean Valener Perry. The College also celebrated the careers of Drs. Sally Guthrie, Leslie Shimp, and Victor Yang who retired with a combined service tenure of 100 years.

Letter from the Dean

T

he theme for this year’s annual report is discovery and delivery. Like pharmacy, the terms discovery and delivery mean different things to different people.

As a pharmaceutical scientist, my first thoughts gravitate toward the search for new medicines (drug discovery) and the physiologic and physicochemical factors influencing the manner in which a drug is administered (drug delivery). Faculty, staff, students and alumni of our Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences do cutting-edge research in these areas every day. Similarly, our Department of Clinical Pharmacy faculty’s research discovering the best ways to use these medications and clinical practice models that deliver cutting-edge care are the very definition of innovation. You’ll find prime examples of these initiatives in the pages that follow.

At the College, discovery and delivery embody so much more. From students discovering their enthusiasm for a field of pharmacy during a clinical rotation to a faculty member delivering new programs and classes to improve healthcare for people with disabilities - discovery and delivery are core to the College’s teaching, research, and service missions and its people.

Pharmacy too means something different to everyone. Community pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare providers to the majority of Americans. The ubiquitous neighborhood pharmacy and high level of trust that patients have in their pharmacist facilitate important patient/pharmacist relationships. However, the lack of public familiarity with the clinical nature of contemporary pharmacy practice in communities, hospitals and other venues propagates a limited and inaccurate image of the pharmacist as someone wearing a white coat who is only trained to count pills and dispense prescriptions. Graduates from our professional program certainly

excel in these functions (we wouldn’t be the top-notch college that we are if we didn’t educate future pharmacists to deliver this role!), but many of them move onto careers in advanced clinical practice, pharmacovigilance, pharmacy management, pharmacy benefits management, the pharmaceutical industry, regulatory affairs, health informatics, academia, or new businesses.

The options in pharmacy careers are nearly limitless, and I have not even mentioned the unlimited array of choices that the outstanding graduates from our PhD programs enjoy. That being said, the public’s limited view of pharmacy creates misconceptions regarding the nature of pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical research, and their promise as pathways toward a rewarding career. Coupled with a near-doubling of the number of pharmacy schools and pharmacy graduates over the past decade, this situation has the potential to make pharmacy a less appealing career choice to potential students.

It’s up to us to educate the public and our peers regarding the opportunities that abound in pharmacy. The College recently began a strategic planning initiative in which we’ve reached out to students, staff, faculty, alumni and other external stakeholders. Promoting our College and the profession of pharmacy and their ability to deliver on the promise of medications to improve health is almost certainly one of the themes that will emerge from this process.

Discovery to Delivery

FDA Awards $4.35 Million in Contracts to College of Pharmacy

A

t the end of 2015, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) funded three separate contracts to Drs. Amidon, Schwendeman, and Sun, all in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy.

These contracts are funded as part of the agency’s Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) with an initial commitment of $4,348,178. Additional options would reach $14,766,472 in total funding if approved by the agency.

These projects seek to answer fundamental questions of drug delivery related to generic drug development and regulation. The funds will support basic mechanistic bench work, theoretical calculation confirmations, animal studies that simulate conditions relevant to human administration, and potential studies in human subjects for further proof of concept. These funded projects serve as a testament to both the quality of the department’s research as well as U-M’s long-standing commitment to support high-impact pharmaceutical science that helps shape FDA’s national strategy to guide companies through the complex drug development process to achieve safe and effective innovator (brand-name) and generic drug products.

“The goal of my project is to design a wireless pharmaceutical analysis device (WPAD) to obtain gastrointestinal (GI) fluids and track locations in GI tract for determination of drug dissolution and drug transit in the human GI tract,” explains Duxin Sun, PhD’02, William I. The research will utilize the recently developed and most advanced MRI technology for study of the human GI tract,” notes Gordon Amidon, PhD’71, Charles R. Walgreen Jr. Professor of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. “The goal of the project is to provide dramatically improved, more universally applicable, and less expensive methods that can be used for regulation of pharmaceutical products for both innovator and generic products.

We will have mechanistically based drug product testing methods that are applicable to all patients for the first time.” The project is a collaboration between the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy,

Dr. Steven Erickson Recognized by U-M Council for Disability Concerns

teven Erickson, PharmD, is a tireless advocate in the field of pharmacy for individuals with disabilities. His efforts led to a certificate of appreciation awarded to him by the U-M Council for Disability Concerns at the 2015 James T. Neubacher ceremony. Dr. Erickson is an associate professor of Social and Administrative Sciences within the Clinical Pharmacy Department. Beloved by his students, Dr. Erickson has been the five-time recipient of the U-M College of Pharmacy Student Appreciation Award.

For the past several years, Dr. Erickson has facilitated a number of research projects to assess the issues and needs to successfully manage medications by people with disabilities and their support networks. Dr. Erickson spent his most recent sabbatical at the Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) at Wayne State University examining medication issues for people with disabilities and their caregivers.

What outcomes from your research do you want the medical community to know about?

Generally, my research efforts are guided by the notion of ensuring the safe and effective use of medicines by people with disabilities.

I would like to see increased awareness by clinicians and educators of clinicians of the unique health-related needs of the people with disabilities and the people who assist them. It’s important to realize that many people with disabilities are able to fully manage their health care, while others are able to participate to some extent with help from their support network. As clinicians, we need to work on communication skills, become familiar with the support

systems, and understand the unintentional barriers in our systems that create disparity in health outcomes of people with disabilities.

How do caregivers play an important role in healthcare delivery?

Caregivers provide the support to people with disabilities that allow them to participate to their fullest capability in society. Depending on the needs of the person with a disability, the caregiver provides essential support. In regards to medication, the caregiver may be involved in a wide range of activities related to the medication management, from communicating with prescribers, obtaining medication from the pharmacy and receiving counseling, properly storing medication at home, administering medication when necessary, performing monitoring tasks related to drug therapy monitoring, and reordering therapy when needed.

How has your personal life influenced your work?

My wife Barbara and I have four great kids. Our oldest son, Christopher, has Down syndrome. We have always been very active in all of our kids’ lives. With Chris, we’ve been involved in Special Olympics, summer camps, school dances, and more. We’ve met many

families along the way, and we’ve made many friends through shared experiences. I realize that people with disabilities are no different than the rest of the people in society when it comes to the things that make us human. They just need some extra help now and again, sometimes more often, to lead full lives.

What are you working on now that excites you?

I’m working on a number of initiatives. The first is education of health care providers and students about the health needs of people with disabilities.

I’m working with Dr. Michelle Meade from the U-M Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department, and other dedicated clinicians and education specialists, to develop programs to help clinicians understand the need to teach and empower patients to engage in self-management of their health care needs. A number of clinicians from this group are also working to develop an interprofessional education elective to be titled Health and Disability, which will be offered in the near future to U-M health professional students. I’m also working on initiatives to increase the safe use of medications by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This has led me to partner with a number of health care providers and administrators from support agencies in Southeast Michigan to develop efforts to identify causes for errors and adverse medication outcomes, and to work to develop meaningful interventions. There is so much that needs to be done - I just wish I had started on this work 20 years ago!

Remembering Professor Emeritus James Richards

ames W. Richards, BSPharm’55, passed away at his Pittsfield Township home on September 1, 2016, after an extended illness. He was a colleague, mentor, distinguished educator and friend to faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the College and will be fondly remembered.

Association (MPA), including acting as the pharmacy representative with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, where he was on the board of directors for nearly 40 years. As recognition for his contributions to the profession, Professor Richards received the prestigious Pharmacist of the Year award from MPA.

Professor Richards had over 60 years of history with the College of Pharmacy: first as a student, then as a part-time faculty member, full-time faculty member, assistant dean, associate dean, interim dean, dean, associate dean again, and always as a proud U-M College of Pharmacy alumnus. He earned two degrees at the University of Michigan, a BS in Pharmacy in 1955 and MBA in 1957. He officially retired in 2001, but maintained an active role with the College as emeritus professor of social and administrative sciences.

Professor Richards was a pioneer in the study of retail pricing of pharmaceuticals. His other research and scholarly interest included organizational, management, legal, and economic issues related to pharmacy practice and third party payment and managed care programs and their impact on access, quality, and costs in the delivery of pharmaceutical care. He was a chapter author for six editions of the prestigious Remington’s Pharmaceutical Sciences and published articles in leading professional journals.

Professor Richards had a prominent role in advancing the practice of pharmacy within the state of Michigan. He served in various leadership roles within the Michigan Pharmacist

Equally important, as Associate Dean he was known as a champion for students, demonstrating his care and compassion for them as individuals.

Professor Richards is survived by his loving wife Helen, his daughter Sharon Kaye Richards of Delray Beach, Florida, his son Michael (Dayna) Richards and a granddaughter Tiffany (Fred) Richards Luttrel of Kentucky. He also leaves behind two brothers, David (Milanne) Richards and George (Janet) Richards.

Kristen L. McGlone Research Award Presented to Swan Lin and Hanna Welch

risten McGlone graduated in 2006 with high distinction from the U-M Doctor of Pharmacy program. She passed away suddenly in August 2006, shortly after starting her new position as a pharmacist with Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan.

The Kristen L. McGlone Research Award was named in her honor.

This monetary award is given annually to a graduating PharmD student (or students) who show excellence in research, as Kristen did. This year’s award was presented to two very deserving recipients, Swan Lin, PharmD’16, and Hanna Welch, PharmD’16.

“When I first began pharmacy school, I was intimidated by the idea of conducting my own research project,” remembers Hanna Welch.

“I’m glad that the College’s curriculum pushed me outside of my comfort zone. I was interested in infectious diseases, so after talking to multiple faculty members I was paired with Dr. Greg Eschenauer to work on a project focused on one of the big issues facing hospitals today: Clostridium difficile infections.”

“I am grateful to have been selected as one of the recipients for the McGlone Research Award this year…”

“Dr. Eschenauer provided guidance during every step of the project, from study design to the final manuscript,” continues Dr. Welch. “Thanks to the mentorship I received, the idea of research no longer intimidates me, and I’m looking forward to continuing to conduct research during my upcoming residency at the University of Pittsburgh.”

“I was honored to win the McGlone Award and to have the chance to share my research with Mr. and Mrs. McGlone, Kristen’s parents, at the 2016 Research Forum,” notes Dr. Welch. “It was an encouragement to meet the McGlones and to see their engagement in the research taking place at the College. The strong emphasis on

research at the College is one of many reasons why I’m proud of my Michigan Pharmacy education.”

“I am grateful to have been selected as one of the recipients for the McGlone Research Award this year,” comments Swan Lin. “I began my work in plastic bronchitis as a P1 in Dr. Kathleen Stringer’s laboratory. I started by characterizing the lung’s metabolic capabilities for therapeutic proteins and evolved to pharmacometabolomics studies in a murine plastic bronchitis model. Dr. Stringer has mentored and guided me in my research work and challenged me to learn new methodologies.”

“I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. and Mrs. McGlone during the 2016 Research Forum and was able to share some of my recent findings in the pharmacometabolomic study,” continues Dr. Lin. “It was encouraging to see how invested they were in students’ success in research.”

PhD Candidates Win Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship

L

ukasz Ochyl, Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD Candidate, and Shasha Li, Medicinal Chemistry PhD Candidate, have been awarded the 2016 Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship.

The Fellowship supports exceptional doctoral candidates who are actively working on their dissertation research and writing.

It aims to acknowledge students who have taken a risk and are working on particularly creative or ambitious dissertations. This competitive fellowship provides the winner with a stipend of $32,000, candidacy tuition, and required fees for twelve months.

Mr. Ochyl’s thesis advisor is James Moon, PhD, John Gideon Searle Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. His thesis project focuses on therapeutic cancer vaccines – an emerging area of study with tremendous translational potential.

“Lukasz is an outstanding graduate student with strong dedication to his project and passion for expanding his knowledge in his field of study,” notes Dr. Moon. “Lukasz has demonstrated his critical thinking skills by carefully designing experiments, identifying potential pitfalls and difficulties, and proposing alternative approaches. His thesis project requires a wide repertoire of laboratory skills ranging from materials synthesis, tissue culture, immunological assays, to animal work,” continues Dr. Moon. “These skills will allow Lukasz to progress through his thesis project and become extensively involved in collaborative work.”

This fellowship’s financial support and prestige will aid both students in realizing their research and career goals.

hasha Li’s thesis advisor is David H. Sherman, PhD, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education and Hans W. Vahlteich Professor of Medicinal Chemistry. Ms. Li’s thesis project, Hapalindole-type Alkaloids from Cyanobacteria: Characterization of Biosynthetic Pathway for Drug Discovery, is focused on biosynthesis exploration of hapalindole-type alkaloids, a fascinating series of natural products from cyanobacteria. This study will not only fill the knowledge gap in hapalindole origins, but also provide a novel class of pharmaceutical promising compounds in drug development for infectious diseases and cancer.

Students Reflect on First Year in Innovative Global Engagement Program

T

he U-M College of Pharmacy created formal ties with China Pharmaceutical University, Fudan University, Peking University, Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, and Sichuan University in a collaborative agreement in 2014. The Chinese schools identify their best candidates for application to the U-M Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program; the College reviews the applications and makes final admissions decisions.

“Our relationship with the Chinese Schools is an important component of the College’s efforts for global engagement,” states Dean Jim Dalton. “The long term goal is to enhance clinical pharmacy practice in China. By identifying, admitting, and graduating highly qualified applications from these partner institutions, the College will educate the next generation of pharmacy leaders in China.”

The first four students in the program, Shiwei Fang, Sichen Wang, Yiwei Yin, and Lu Zhang, recently finished their P1 year at Michigan.

“I was surprised by how much I learned in one year of pharmacy school at Michigan,” notes Shiwei Fang. “I found that faculty mentored students, not only in academic matters, but also helped students develop professional goals,” continues Fang. “I’m looking forward to learning more about the variety of roles pharmacists occupy in the United States. I’m also excited for interprofessional collaboration with students from other health science schools.”

“The highlight of my first year was the White Coat ceremony,” remembers Yiwei Yin. “It’s excellent to have such a warm welcome at the beginning of our career. Even though my parents could not attend it in person, they are still glad to see that I have a very good start.”

“The Pharmacy curriculum does an excellent job in guiding us toward a comprehensive knowledge of the world of pharmacy step by step,” explains Yin. “I believe this will help ease my transition into the profession. I’ve also found so many interesting things going on in Ann Arbor!” says Yin. “I love the restaurant week, the art fair, football games, and the beautiful views on my way to the coffee shop light up my day.”

The collaborative agreement aims to identify two to four students in each of the next three years who will complete their PharmD education at the University of Michigan. A similar agreement with the colleges of pharmacy at The Ohio State University and University of Minnesota is expected to complement the efforts at U-M.

Drug Discovery: a Collaborative Effort

pon embarking on a doctoral degree in Medicinal Chemistry four years ago, I was naïve in thinking that I could single handedly do all aspects of drug development. I saw myself doing both the biological aspects of drug design as well as the chemical synthesis. Early on, I realized that this would not be possible. The avenue to develop a new therapeutic is not one taken alone, but one that is travelled as a team.

I now have a better understanding on how a synthetic chemist operates. During and outside of lab group meeting we engage and discuss new possible compounds; why some may be too unstable to ever synthesize, why some may be more potent, or why some have better solubility than others, for example. As young scientists we are lucky that there are so many collaborative efforts within our

My path found me taking the more synthetic route and learning to work with structural biologists. I found myself being co-mentored by two outstanding scientists, medicinal chemist, Dr. Scott Larsen, and structural biologist, Dr. John Tesmer. Initially, I worked only in the Larsen Lab doing synthesis, but as the need arose for me to run the biochemical assays on my compounds, I began to work in the Tesmer Lab as well. Running my own assays not only gave me the freedom to process and analyze the results of my newly synthesized compounds, it also has given me the opportunity to see the inner workings of a structural biology lab as well as an organic chemistry lab.

Experiencing the painstaking pipetting of running thousands of assays has given me an appreciation of the amount of work it takes to tests all of the compounds a medicinal chemist makes.

By my side, my colleagues are working to then crystalize the compounds, which is far more tedious than I had previously thought. They spend their days purifying proteins in order to set up hundreds of crystal trays hoping that in the coming weeks, as they check those trays, there will be new protein crystals, but alas, typically nothing will crystallize and they need to go back to the drawing board.

university that give us this opportunity to act as a team and learn so much about other aspects of the drug discovery process. These collaborations better prepare me for working with, respecting, and understanding my colleagues when I move on to a post-doctoral position and then into the pharmaceutical industry.

R

eading the pages of this publication has already given you a completely different impression of discovery and delivery than what I had as a first year pharmacy student. Like many of the general public, discovery was exotic and complex, practiced only by experienced professionals in white coats and lab goggles doing work featured on the television channel that shares the apt name. Delivery was altogether closer to home, my local independent that my brother and I stopped in for ice cream and the occasional antibiotic. There were pharmacists in hospitals too, I was pretty sure. Now starting my final year at the University of Michigan, it seems that I was a bit off the mark on both counts.

Not only was I correct about those hospital pharmacists, I learned about dozens of new roles in the ensuing months. Scientific posters in every imaginable specialty fight for each inch of real estate in our hallways.

Discovery was hardly limited to the whitecoat-and-goggle affair I had imagined, but developing new guidelines, identifying barriers, and evaluating medication and

resource use. It was here I found my niche: I would begin blending my analytics and programming background with a bit of business sense in evaluating factors that affect the complexity of new investigational drug trials during my second year.

Delivery too surprised me. My year at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan allowed me to learn how to best utilize enormous repositories of data—modeling large populations based on risk factors, medication use patterns, demographics, and so much more—then using it to answer big strategic or population health questions. I helped develop tools to assist pharmacists in monitoring, interventions, and follow-up that could affect thousands of people.

Whether it be from modeling the prescribers most likely to write for high-risk medications, playing part in developing new clinical programs, or the mentorship of pioneers here at the University of Michigan who are continuously expanding what it means to call yourself a pharmacist, my life has never felt more open to possibility.

Given my experience, I have no doubt that each generation of University of Michigan

pharmacists will continue to step up and solve the world’s most pressing problems in some of the most unlikely ways. Crazy new technologies? Check. New practice models?

Check. World-class faculty, staff, and alumni? Check. My generation is standing on the shoulders of giants; we’ll see you on the Discovery Channel.

Additionally, this committee serves as the College’s Campaign Steering Committee when the University is actively in a fundraising campaign.

obert A. Lipper, PhD‘78, has been named the 2016 Alumni Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award winner. This award honors alumni who have made significant lifetime contributions in their profession or to society through practice, research, education, or public service.

A 1978 graduate of the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, Dr. Lipper studied Pharmaceutical Chemistry under the guidance of Dr. William I. Higuchi. Dr. Lipper began his industrial career with Pfizer Central Research in Groton, Connecticut, where he was primarily involved with liquid and sterile product development for human and veterinary pharmaceutical products.

He joined Bristol-Myers Co. in 1983 and was promoted to Vice President in 1990, shortly after the merger between BristolMyers and Squibb. He retired from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. as Vice President, Biopharmaceutics Research and Development, in 2008. Dr. Lipper is a member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the Parenteral Drug Association. He also currently serves on the Dean’s Industrial Advisory Council for the Purdue University School of Pharmacy, and the Dean’s Advisory Committee for the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Lipper established his consulting business, Back Cove Pharma, LLC, in February 2008, providing technical consulting in pharmaceutical development as well as education services.

pon graduation, I took a position with Meijer in Battle Creek as a Pharmacy Team Leader. I immediately started looking for opportunities to connect with local providers and build interprofessional collaborations. My student research experience became a stepping-stone that would lead to a relationship between a local healthcare organization, Integrated Health Partners, and myself. Specifically, I have worked closely with the Associate Manager, Quality Improvement, whose role was designed to improve transitions of care, engagement of patients in their care, advance directives, medication reconciliation, referral process between organizations, and communication between organizations. We have worked together to improve the communication of pharmacists’ recommendations to physicians.

My research experience as a student shaped my current practice by expanding my network, providing answers to patient care questions, and offering real-world insight to pharmacy services. I reached out to a care manager I knew from my PharmD Investigation Project and asked if there were any opportunities for pharmacy involvement within her organization. I now routinely attend the organization’s monthly meetings, where we look for process improvement opportunities through informal practice research. As a collective group, we have improved communication and gained a better understanding of our individual strengths and resources within our respective organizations. This prac-

tice has led to better service to our patient population and truly collaborative care.

My pharmacy team within Meijer sought opportunities to advance clinical services by examining the current workflow for opportunities to improve efficiency. Meijer offers a variety of clinical services, including coaching programs, health assessments, medication therapy management, and point of care testing. While these are not extensive research projects, they do provide insight on what works, and what does not, in real-life settings. The results help us work together as a team to improve patient care and can lead to innovation.

As I transition into a new position with Meijer, I have the opportunity to do more formal practice research with schools of pharmacy. These opportunities will expand interprofessional relationships and better equip me to improve patient outcomes in the community setting.

Research, whether it is formal or informal, is an essential component to advancing the profession of pharmacy.

Larry and Ann Hsu Professorship

“Victors for Michigan” is the catch phrase for the current University-wide campaign that seeks $4 billion in support for all schools, colleges, libraries, campuses, and centers. Through the end of fiscal year 2016 (June 30, 2016), $3.5 billion had been raised.

The overall university campaign has a sub-goal: $1 billion in direct student support.

How are we doing? Through Fiscal Year 2016, we have gifts and commitments of just over $17 million against an overall goal of $20 million. Some highlights:

Chung-Chiang (Larry), PhD‘81, and Fung-Hwa (Ann) Hsu’s generous gift established the Larry and Ann Hsu Professorship in the College of Pharmacy this year. Dr. Hsu reflected on his time at the College and what drove him to give back to his alma mater.

What motivated you to establish the professorship?

When we launched the College of Pharmacy’s part of the campaign, student support was also very much on our minds.

Before the campaign, the College (through the generosity of our alumni and friends) could provide about $1.3 million in direct student support. We are hoping to increase that number to $2 million annually. It remains a high priority as is securing support for our faculty through endowed chairs and research funding.

My father has always told me that education is the fundamental driving force behind a healthy and prosperous society. I appreciate what he said even more as I get older. He was not rich but he donated everything he had for education support when he passed away a few years ago. The setting up of a professorship is just part of my commitment to my father and to the society.

Do you have a favorite professor from your time at the College?

How did they influence your career?

At the time when I was at U-M, the College had an excellent team of faculty: Bill Higuchi, Norman Ho, Norman Weiner, John Wagner, Gordon Flynn, just to name a few. I benefited tremendously from this group of talented scientists and teachers.

However, I have to say that Dr. Bill Higuchi had the most profound impact on how I look at things during the rest of my life (although he may not know about this). When I started at the graduate school at U-M, Dr. Higuchi already was a well-known scientist in the pharmaceutical field. I admired him and hoped that one day I will have the success and glory like he had. When I started working with him, I came to realize that behind his success and glory is the extreme hardworking which requires discipline and even sacrifice on many occasions. I learned from him one of the most important lessons in my life: there is no free lunch.

Remembering Dean Perry Valener L. Perry, a driving force in student recruitment, admissions, and retention at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy for 40 years, died on Dec. 20, 2015, in Almo, KY. She was 66.

Dean Perry was the College’s undisputed ambassador and counselor. Hers was almost always the first voice and face students encountered when they expressed an interest in a Michigan Pharmacy degree, and that same face and voice beamed with pride when students crossed the stage at each commencement.

The Dean V. L. Perry Scholarship was created upon her retirement in 2012, recognizing her long and dedicated commitment to the College. At this year’s commencement, the first Valener L. Perry Award was given recognizing the student who has made outstanding contributions to student life at the College. This year’s recipient was Allison Schepers.
