Phi Lambda Sigma is an organization that I hold dear to my heart. I would not be where I am today without the mentorship, encouragement and guidance from its members. This organization has not only developed me as a leader, but has provided me with the tools and wisdom needed to develop future leaders of pharmacy. Consolidating the achievements of this chapter into 16 pages was no easy feat. The individuals that constitute this chapter embody the attributes of a good leader: integrity, passion, and the desire to influence others. I am humbled and honored to stand amongst this group of elite professionals.

With that being said, It is with great joy that I present to you the 18th edition of the Beta Chi Annual Report. Enjoy!

STUDENT ORGANIZATION FAIR We kicked off the 2019-2020 year by hosting a roundtable event with The Rho Chi Society at the Student Organization Fair at New Student Orientation. At this event, incoming P1 students were introduced to the mission and values of Phi Lambda Sigma and the types of events that we host throughout the College of Pharmacy and University. At the roundtable, we also highlighted the importance of leadership in the pharmacy profession and tips/tricks on how to successfully balance a busy academic schedule with extracurricular activities that strengthen leadership skills

HOW TO WORK A ROOM On October 28, 2019, our chapter hosted a networking/leadership development event called “How to Work a Room.” This event was led by speaker, Georgia Doran, M.Ed, from The University of South Carolina. Mrs. Doran is a certified expert in Business Etiquette and International Protocol and is the Director of the Office of Career Management for the University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business.At this event 45 students within the College of Pharmacy learned about how to network with professionals and strengthen your personal and professional presence. Students learned how to properly introduce themselves and hold conversations in a professional manner. After Mrs. Doran’s presentation, students were allowed the opportunity to test their new-found knowledge in an interactive reception. Students were tasked to introduce themselves and practice their skills and handshake to professionals (8 Phi Lambda Sigma Alumni members from the Beta Chi Chapter).

BOOK CLUB This year, our chapter hosted a book club for students, faculty and staff at the MUSC College of Pharmacy based on “Fish! A Proven Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results.” At the monthly meetings, Tatianna Timor and Dr. David Shirley facilitated a learning environment chock-full of activities and exercises to teach the attendees about the 4 practices of the Fish! Philosophy. The book is based on the World Famous Seattle Pike Place Fish Market, a business booming with passion and commitment. The owners of the fish market attribute its success to four basic principles, “Be There”, “Play”, “Make Their Day” and “Choose Your Attitude.” Utilizing the four basic principles, Tatianna and Dr. Shirley designed role play scenarios, games and other activities to challenge the participants to apply the tools to their everyday lives. Overall, book club was a fun and exciting leadership activity that Beta Chi looks forward to hosting again in the future.

SEMINAR FOR SUCCESS One of our last events for the Spring semester was a newly-planned leadership/professional development event that we called “The Seminar for Success.”

At this workshop/station-type event, student members of Phi Lambda Sigma and The Rho Chi Society planned to offer support in different areas for professional development including; research, how to plan events, time management, study skills, community service, and other well-rounded qualities important in a successful pharmacy student. Unfortunately, this event was not brought to fruition due to the transition to virtual learning with the COVID-19 pandemic.

18TH ANNUAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE “Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Being Your Best Self” Saturday, February 8, 2020 The College Center at Trident Technical College For our 18th Annual Leadership Conference, Beta Chi invited Dr. Korrel Kanoy to speak on her expertise in leadership with Emotional Intelligence.

Dr. Kanoy is the Senior Partner with Developmental Associates, LLC. and has developed training programs to help others master emotional intelligence and leadership skills. She has delivered keynote addresses at national and regional conferences. Her interactive training focuses on building knowledge, self-awareness and new skills in order to achieve greater success. Dr. Kanoy is the co-author of The Student EQ Edge: Emotional Intelligence and Your Academic and Personal Success, a book used within the MUSC College of Pharmacy for an Emotional Intelligence elective that students can enroll in throughout the year. This elective is facilitated by our Phi Lambda Sigma faculty advisor, Dr. Cathy Worrall. At this conference, Dr. Kanoy offered an interactive workshop to teach students and healthcare professionals about emotional intelligence, provide why it is important, and help improve skills in emotional intelligence. Attendees were able to complete the EQi 2.0 assessment before the conference in order to fully understand and apply their personalized results to the conference programming. This conference was attended by over 200 attendees and Phi Lambda Sigma members from 8 different Colleges of Pharmacy across the county.

VIRTUAL HOUSE OF DELEGATES Nominations Member-at-Large : Hanie Barakat Speaker of the House : BreAnna Davids Dr. Anthony DeClue Dr. Cathy Worrall On April 19, 2020, Beta Chi members logged in for the Phi Lambda Sigma Virtual House of Delegates and Awards Ceremony in order to support two members who were running for positions on the Phi Lambda Sigma National Executive Committee. Hanie Barakat, Chapter President, ran for National Member-at-Large and BreAnna Davids, Chapter Historian, ran for National Speaker of the House. The Beta Chi Chapter also submitted our nominations for National Awards, including Dr. Anthony DeClue for Alumni Member of the Year and Dr. Cathy Worrall for the Procter & Gamble National Leadership Award

LEADER ACADEMY The Beta Chi chapter has continued partnership with Dr. Kristy Brittain, an associate professor and member of Phi Lambda Sigma, and Dr. Alan Spies, a fellow Phi Lambda Sigma member, and Senior Associate at GiANT Worldwide, to create an innovative and engaging co-curricular experience.

The program was launched at The Medical University of South Carolina in the 2017-2018 academic year and has been innovated each year in order to better serve our student population. The program is now structured as Leader Academy 1.0 and Leader Academy 2.0 so students are able to continue their professional development into their second year.

In Leader Academy 2.0, Phi Lambda Sigma officers and faculty participated in monthly phone calls/lectures with Dr. Kristy Brittain in order to learn a leadership tool that will be taught to second year-pharmacy students. The tools were introduced once a month during Leader Academy, where 5 to 6 second year-students met with one of the PLS members/facilitators. The groups of students worked closely throughout the year in order to use the skills gained in Leader Academy with the 5 Voices and 5 Gears to maintain productive and healthy group flow. Each month was built to teach fundamental teamwork, leadership, emotional intelligence, and communication skills. After learning the tools, second year students were challenged to use it within their personal, academic, and professional lives to further their development. The second year students also participated in the second portion of Leader Academy, Leader Academy 1.0. Here, the second year students would be the facilitators for first-year pharmacy students in groups.Â

LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE This year, our Chapter implemented/expanded upon Leader academy to provide opportunities for pharmacy students to foster communication and leadership skills to develop stress management skills and promote wellness and tackle the ongoing issue of resilience in healthcare. This was done by having students complete and submit results from the Pharmacist WellBeing Index and “Gear Check” assessments each month. These results were presented in a research poster at the AACP Virtual Pharmacy Education 2020 Poster Symposium by Phi Lambda Sigma members Hanie Barakat and Tori Ferree.

This program allowed not only students, but facilitators to grow personally and professionally. Along with leadership tools, we were able to learn about our own leadership voice, as well as those of our peers. Each individual involved with Leader Academy took an assessment to determine their predominant voice. Each voice is different, but all voices are important in a successful team. Throughout the program, individuals would relate the tool of the month back to their voice. This taught students to become self-aware and learn how to best optimize a tool in their toolbox for their given leadership style. Due to the success of the course, we have raised leaders who know themselves in order to lead themselves and successfully lead others.

For our 2020 Beta Chi New Member Initiation Ceremony and Awards Ceremony, we were extremely excited to initiate 10 new collegiate members and 2 alumni members into our Society. We also had the pleasure of hearing from our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Alan Spies, at our Initiation Ceremony. Dr. Spies serves as the Director of Development for Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Dr. Spies is also a Senior Consultant for GiANT Worldwide, a company dedicated to multiplying and cultivating engaged leaders. His nearly 15 years in higher education has allowed him to teach in courses at both the professional and graduate levels, specializing in areas of leadership, law, ethics, human resources management, marketing, and entrepreneurship.

Graduating members, Members of the Beta Chi executive board, and facilitators for our Leader Academy Program were all recognized at the Awards portion of the ceremony. Finally, our chapter voted Hanie Barakat, the 2019-2020 Chapter President, as the Beta Chi Chapter Member of the Year.
