It was December 2022, the fall semester was almost out I had just come off a very stellar semester and was looking to rest I remembered my friend Rachel Odunayo invited me and our mutual friend Pearl to her birthday dinner Being the guy that I am, I agreed What awaited me at the rooftop restaurant kind of makes history. Along with everyone else, comes this white girl with blonde hair I just remember how cool I thought she was She was effortlessly charismatic and I said to myself.....Hm OKAY!
I just remember being mesmerized by how beautiful she was Little did I know at the time, she’d quickly become one of my closest friends. After we, I guess, trauma bonded over our stupid ass boss (FUCK THAT LADY!) we became really close She invited me to my first real party in Tallahassee, and man the rest, once again is history. Before graduation, she agreed to be in this publication, and the conversation we had was incredible
I want to speak directly to you Kate. I love you so much You’re cool, classy, confident and most importantly you’re highly intelligent You and the others looked after me during Fall 2023, and for that I owe y’all my life. I love you!
Florida State University is well known for many things Their competitive athletics department, their world-renowned Motion Picture Arts Academy, and home to some of the most creative people in the World Among those who roam the campus is Kate Novak She’s a Public Interest Media-Communication major (shout out PIMC) in her graduating semester Alongside being a gifted filmmaker in her own right, she’s also participates in something know as abandoned tourism Alright, I know what y’all are thinking, “Shane, what in the fuck is abandoned tourism?” Well, glad you asked
You see, abandoned tourism is defined as the exploration of abandoned or derelict man-made structures, such as factories, hospitals, prisons, theme parks, or residential buildings It is a form of recreational exploration that often focuses on the historical, architectural, or aesthetic aspects of these abandoned places
Participants in abandoned tourism may seek out these locations for various reasons, including curiosity, adventure, photography, or the thrill of exploring off-limits areas Some practitioners of abandoned tourism may also have an interest in documenting and preserving the history of these abandoned places before they are lost to decay or redevelopment
Overall, abandoned tourism involves the exploration and appreciation of abandoned sites, often with a focus on their cultural and historical significance So, what makes it so cool to Ms Novak? Well, one can say that she’s a bit of a historian Before venturing to places, she tends to study the history of the place she visits. And also, she likes to explore these places, because actual people lived there That the same halls she walks down, someone else walked down, but lived through it One of her most frequent visits has a dark history of abuse The Dozier Reform School for Boys
The Dozier Reform School for Boys, also known as the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys, was a notorious reform school located in Marianna, Florida, United States. It was in operation for over a century, from 1900 to 2011.
The school gained widespread attention due to allegations of physical and sexual abuse, as well as reports of unmarked graves and suspicious deaths of students.
Initially established as the Florida State Reform School, it was later renamed in honour of Arthur G. Dozier, a former state superintendent of schools.
widespread physical and sexual abuse spanning several decades.
Over the years, the school housed thousands of boys, many of whom were sent there for relatively minor offences or for being deemed "incorrigible" by the courts.
Reports of abuse at the Dozier School emerged over decades, with former students recounting experiences of severe corporal punishment, sexual abuse, and other forms of mistreatment.
Kate has visited this site approximately 12 times. With each venture, Kate learns something new. "We understood that boys would be sent there for various different levels of crime," she told Industry Shakedown. "The boys would get to choose where they went, and Dozier kind of had everything. They had a pool, a gymnasium, a football field, a baseball field. It was like a college campus."
From the sounds of it, this place was supposed to be a sort of heaven and a way for the boys to reform and get their lives together. But remember, all that glitters isn't gold.
"From reports that I've heard, and these are from actual conversations with people," she said. "The boys would realise that it was more like hell on earth."
The boys faced beatings, sexual assaults, and as of 2024, 133 were murdered. When the boys died, they were thrown into unmarked graves with crosses made of pipes. Sadly, only some of the remains have been positively identified.
"When they excavated the grounds, they put these headstones in the grass saying, 'here he lies unknown, but not forgotten.'” The tragedies occurred on the campus for 111 years, from 1900 to 2011.
Kate likes to return to the site as a way of paying tribute, but not to sensationalize. Her first trip to the grounds was in June 2020, during the height of COVID-19.
"Not many people were here in Tallahassee, and my friends came to visit me," she told us. "We took the chance of driving an hour to see if it was still standing. And it was."

“When I first went there gates surrounding the whole thing with barbed wire,” she said. “We read about a hole, so we parked my car in the middle of the bushes and got out and crawled for like 40 minutes for us to get through this thick underbrush of the North Florida woods to make it to this hole in the fence. I was ahead of my two friends, as I’m walking, I fall My legs go knee-deep in muck I told my friends how to go around Well come to find out, that was a mote and they would throw the boy’s bodies in there There were bodies in there that had been deeply decomposed ”
In terms of learning, Novak says it’s to the point that she has visions of living there
“If you’re a true urban explorer, you’re going to respect the people that once walked there,” she explained. “It’s more thank acknowledging that a person was there. You have to put a face to the name.”

Born in 1892, Lamar Smith was the son of Levi Smith and Harriet Humphrey From Lincoln County, MS, little is known about Lamar's childhood and upbringing The world entered war for the first time in 1914. When the US entered World War I, Smith enlisted to join the nation in the fight.
After his experiences in battle, Smith returned to Mississippi and became politically active His main goal was to get disenfranchised AfricanAmericans to vote While Smith’s heart was in the right place by modern standards, his work was seen as “taboo” during a time where African-Americans were voiceless in the United States.
While Smith’s heart was in the right place by modern standards, his work was seen as “taboo” during a time where African-Americans were voiceless in the United States As the year turned to 1955, Civil and Social unrest was on a steady rise in the Southern Area of America. What awaited the Black Community were four tragedies that ignited the rise of the Civil Rights Movement
One of which involved the murder of Reverend George Lee The abduction and subsequent murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till and in December of that year, the murder of Gus Courts. Also that year, a seamstress by the name of Rosa Parks refused to surrender her seat But what happened in Brookhaven , Ms on August 13? What happened on the front lawn of the city’s courthouse would forever alter American History and is remembered as one of the greatest miscarriages of justice ever
On Saturday, August 13, 1955, Lamar Smith ended a phone call at his home. He told his wife that he was headed to Brookhaven to register absentee voting ballots for African-Americans. Little did the couple know, this would be their last conversation and last time seeing one another.
Smith arrived at the Brookhaven Courthouse where he was met by a white mob. After his arrival, a fight ensues and one of the three men fighting Lamar shoots him. As Lamar Smith lay dying one of the perpetrators uttered the words, “ no one touches him, let the nigger die.” Smith sure enough expired on the front lawn of the Lincoln County Courthouse.
The three men who were involved in the fight with Smith were, Noah Smith, Mack Smith and Charles Falvey. The irony of it all is that Lamar Smith was well-known in his community by all. Both blacks and whites alike. It is widely believed that he actually conducted business with the very men that killed him. Smith stood about 6'3 and weighed in at around 250 lbs, he was a mountain of a human being. He wasn’t quiet about racial equality, voting rights, or politics. Instead he was an outspoken advocate for these causes.
On October 9, 1888, Elisha C Barlow was born in Lincoln County, Mississippi His brother was W F Barlow He is a Cumberland University alum After that, he worked as a teacher in Lincoln County, his home After that, he practiced law in Brookhaven, Mississippi He would go on to take the Lamar Smith case on as it seemed open and shut But this was the state of Mississippi in the mid 1950s, things were not right for black people
The three white suspects one of them was covered in blood were able to flee the courthouse lawn without any problems, even though there were many people around, including the county sheriff Barlow charged one of the suspects, a white farmer named Noah Smith, with murder, and the next day he turned himself in to the police Twenty white men made up the grand jury that heard the three accused in September 1955 The grand jury declined to indict the suspects, and the "50 to 75" witnesses who testified before the jury denied seeing anything
Murder in Black and White, a documentary directed by Keith Beauchamp, was produced in 2005 and chronicled Smith's murder Beachamp and FBI tried interviewing witnesses in Brookhaven in 2009 One of the racially motivated killings in Mississippi in 1955 was the killing of Smith The other occurrences included the shooting of Gus Courts, a civil rights friend of George W Lee's, in Belzoni in December, the murder of Emmett Till, a black adolescent visiting from Chicago, in August, and the May murder of Lee The NAACP leaflet M is for Mississippi and Murder mentioned the Smith case
In relation to Smith's murder, three white men Noah Smith, Mack Smith, and Charles Falvey were taken into custody An all-white Brookhaven grand jury declined to return any indictments on September 13, 1955
According to the district attorney, Carnie E Smith, the sheriff, declined to make an instant arrest "even though he knew everything I know " The district attorney further stated that he was informed by the sheriff that he witnessed one of the defendants, Noah Smith, "leave the scene with blood all over him " Regardless matter who the individual was, it was his responsibility to take him into custody, but he chose not to The US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division closed the civil rights case in 2016, noting that all three of the accused had passed away

WonkaWilly Wonka returns a third time for his own live-action feature, eventually titled “Wonka”, on December 15th, 2023. Only this time, it is a prequel film starring 28-year-old Timothee Chalamet who plays a much younger Willy Wonka As he did in “Dune”, Timothee delivers an unforgettable performance portraying one of the most loved pop culture characters Not only that, the producers made sure that this film would be a musical just like the previous films
Every incarnation of Willy Wonka would give off the vibes of a prequel. However, Wonka is the first film to be considered a prequel for the character, taking place years before the events of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” which was released in 1971 In other words this is Timothee Chalamet portraying the young version of Gene Wilder’s Wonka! Fans and viewers were unaware if he would be the younger version of Johnny Depp’s or Wilder’s incarnations Given the concept and design of the green-haired Oompa Loompa, played by Hugh Grant, this should have been a no-brainer
Wonka had a heart-warming story which revolved around a young and poor Willy Wonka who was already known to be a chocolate connoisseur, and wanted to expand on such by opening his own chocolate shop in London. However, he also discovers that a cartel of nefarious chocolatiers were terrorizing the townspeople and giving chocolate a bad name It took a young lady named Noodle, played by Calah Lane, to inform Willy to not sell his soul to this cartel He was destined for more
We see what he is destined for when he begins to let people sample his chocolate, which results in not only unsatisfied customers, but floating ones! This showed that Willy Wonka wouldn’t just be known for his delicious chocolate, but also some of the effects that his chocolate would have on customers, such as also making them engorged as seen in previous films as well
One would call Hugh Grant’s Oompa Loompa the show-stealer and star of the film, showing his disdain and then gratitude for Willy by saving him from the nefarious cartel before they could drown Willy in his own chocolate In the end, Wonka shows what he was doing it all for: his late mother, herself a chocolatier She left Wonka a message on an infamous golden ticket in a chocolate bar which said, “It’s not the chocolate that matters It’s who you share it with” This added on to reasons why Wonka was such a feel-good, heart-warming story that more than likely set itself up for a sequel

At the time of this writing we got word that there was a shooting in Kansas City after the Chiefs Super Bowl Parade. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of this horrible tragedy.
With the 104th NFL season now over, The Kansas City Chiefs are now the first team in 19 years to go back to back as Super Bowl Champions. After a very close game, an amazing halftime performance, and a number of A-List stars this Super Bowl capped off what proved to be a chaotic season in the National Football League.
Who were the players that shined the brightest throughout the season? Who took home the NFL’s highest honrs at this years, well, NFL Honors Ceremony? Did your favorites win? Or, were they, as you all say, “robbed”? Well let’s find out. Starting with the Super Bowl MVP.
After a (in the words of Jim Ross) a slobberknocker of a game, the Kansas City Chiefs earned their 4th Super Bowl Championship, marking their third in the last five seasons. After a showdown that could have saw either the San Francisco 49ers and the Chiefs become world champions, Kansas City took the title in overtime after a touchdown pass from Mahomes to Mecole Hardman.
Interestingly enough the chiefs got off to a rough start. As the first quarter ended scoreless on both sides. The Chiefs and 49ers would end the first half of the game 10-3 in favor of San Francisco.
The second half however, was all Kansas City. Harrison Butker made two field goals to put the Chiefs on the board (10-6), Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught a pass from Patrick Mahomes resulting in a 16-yard-touchdown, giving the Chiefs their first lead of the contest.
At the top of 4th Quarter 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy connected with Jennings for the second time putting San Francisco back in the lead 16-13 Each team traded field goals for the remainder of regulation, resulting in a 19-19 regulation finish
This sends the game to overtime This marks the second time the Super Bowl has gone into Overtime , the first being Super Bowl LI
After controlling the Overtime Coin toss, Jake Moody nailed a 27-yard field goal, giving possession to the Chiefs After a 13 play, 75 yard drive, Mahomes clinched the chiefs 3rd Super Bowl in 5 years, after a 3-yard-touchdown pass to Mecole Hartman
This is officially the longest Super Bowl ever, coming in at 74:57 Super Bowl MVP went to Patrick Mahomes, marking his third time winning the award
