allingwater is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most widely acclaimed works. Designed for the family of Pittsburgh department-store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann, construction of the house began in 1936.

The key to the setting of the house is the waterfall over which it is built. Historically, the falls were a focal point of the Kaufmanns’ activities, and the family indicated to Wright their desire to locate their weekend house near them. Much to their

surprise, Wright designed the house to rise above the waterfall, rather than face it. The Kaufmanns adopted Wright’s original scheme with few changes. Perhaps better than any single work, Fallingwater exemplifies Wright’s concept of organic architecture: the harmonious union of art and nature. Completed with a guest and service wing in 1939, Fallingwater was constructed of sandstone quarried on the property and was built by local craftsmen. The stone serves to separate reinforced concrete “trays,” dramatically cantilevered over the stream. Fallingwater was the weekend home of the Kaufmann family from 1937 until 1963, when the house, its contents and grounds were entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy by Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. Fallingwater is the only major Wright work to come into the public domain with its setting, original furnishings and artwork intact. Today, Fallingwater is open to the public, offering tours daily (except Wednesday) from mid-March through November. The guided house tour features all of the major rooms of the house and lasts approximately one hour. Visitors are welcome to walk the exterior grounds after the tour, enjoying the iconic view of the house dramatically cantilevered over the waterfall. Tickets for the tour are available online at www.fallingwater.org or over the phone by calling Visitor Services at 724-329-8501. page 10 >>

PACKING FOR YOUR TRIP: AFTER YOUR VACATION OR WEEKEND GETAWAY IS PLANNED, THERE IS ALWAYS PACKING TO DO. DON’T LET PACKING FOR YOUR TRIP BECOME A STRESSFUL EXPERIENCE. WITH THESE HELPFUL TIPS, YOU CAN BE STRESS-FREE AND PACKED IN NO TIME.

Start off by creating a packing checklist. Having a checklist will cut back on the time you waste thinking of what you need, or worrying that you may have missed something important. If you have a checklist to follow, you are able to scratch items off as you pack. This will help with organization and feeling confident with everything that is packed.

Cinderella with tthe Orchestr Orchestra

Pack your personal items. This is usually the easiest thing to do. Grab what you absolutely need to have on a daily basis. Don’t go overboard. Pack only the essentials. Usually, anything you forget in this category can be purchased on your trip.

Packing your clothes, shoes and accessories is the most time-consuming. First, check the weather at your destination so you are prepared for your trip. Set aside everything you plan on taking. Mixing and matching tops and pants will save space. After all of your clothes and shoes are set aside, go through you items again and cut at least 5 things you do not need.

Next, pack any reading material or gadgets you plan on taking. Remember, this is your vacation so you don’t need to bring every gadget you own. Instead plan on relaxing or taking fun, exciting excursions that will keep you busy.

HEALTHY EATING ON CAR TRIPS: WITH A LITTLE BIT OF EFFORT AND WILLPOWER, YOU CAN STAY ON TRACK WITH YOUR HEALTHY DIET, EVEN IF YOU’RE DRIVING CROSS-COUNTRY!

Let’s start with the most important meal of the day — breakfast. Whether you are in a hotel or a gas-station aisle, choose foods with low sugar, high fiber and protein. Foods such as hard-boiled eggs, fruit, bran muffins, omelets and oatmeal are perfect starts to the day. If you are driving, skip the energy drinks as excess sugar can lead to drowsiness.

Another great way to stay healthy during your trips is to prepare snacks ahead of time. String cheese, whole-grain crackers, peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches, almonds and fresh vegetables are all great ways to keep you full while keeping fast-food cravings down. As long as you follow these tips and drink lots of water, you’ll be on the road towards a healthier trip. 18 CITY PAPER TRAVEL GUIDE 2013 ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT

Speaking of history, history buffs will find their place in Butler County, too. Many museums and historical societies preserve the region’s rich past. Be sure to check out the calendar ahead of time for neat hands-on and living history events. A must-see is the Maridon Museum, a museum of ancient Asian art and culture, also featuring German Meissen porcelain. It’s fascinating to imagine all of the items once in the home of one person, Mary Hulton Phillips, who gifted them to create the museum. You won’t find a museum like this anywhere else in the region! It’s truly New York City caliber. Something you won’t find in the city is camping — camping for those who don’t do so well in the outdoors and camping for those who are at peace sleeping under the stars. A wide variety of Family camping in accommodations are available from Butler County modern cabins to primitive tenting sites and even yurts. Most of the campgrounds offer special entertainment and activities for the whole family. If camping just isn’t for you, you’ll also find great hotels and cozy bed and breakfasts. A B&B stay might be just what you need to get away from work, from kids, from routines for a weekend. Then you could spend a day at the spa, or visiting the county’s award-winning wineries. Shop till you drop in the many unique shops sprinkled across quaint, small towns. Antiques, décor, clothes and gifts are just a few of the things you’ll find. One-of-a-kind items are also available such as alpaca products and Butler County-made foods. You can even get down on the farm by visiting an alpaca farm or staying at a farm bed and breakfast. For a totally different travel activity, sign up for a Blue Ribbon Experience with Tack Operator Training. Dig for fun with an excavator, bulldozer, skid steer, compact excavator or backhoe. An experienced instructor will work with you the whole way. Anyone can do it — men, women, doctors, nuns, athletes, stay-at-home moms — anyone! Saying Butler County has a little something for everyone sounds cliché, but it’s true! Agritourism, arts, culture, fairs, festivals, family fun, dining, golfing, history, great outdoors, shopping, events, quirky sites, wineries, museums, parks, and the list goes on! One of the best parts is how easily accessible Butler County is. Routes 8, 19 and 422 run through the county, as well as I-79, I-80 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Thousands of acres of public lands offer space for swimming, paddling, hiking, and cycling. Two of the most popular are the spectacular 110-foot Salmon River Falls and Selkirk Shores State Park on Lake Ontario.

This year’s AMT season premiered April 5. The music & comedy variety show brings outstanding vocals, slapstick comedy and hysterical impersonations to the stage. Performances run through the end of October. All performances take place in AMT’s comfortable 527-seat theater in the heart of Randolph County. Known as “The Freshest Sound in the Mountains,” the theater, now in its sixth year, has brought home four statewide awards from the WV Division of Tourism. A venue that can be discounted by a younger age group, promises to entertain no matter what age you may be. Former skeptic, 13-year old Lakota Campbell from New Jersey said, “When I heard about it I thought it was going to be very stupid and lame. But man was I wrong!! It was so much fun. Great entertainment and I would love to go back any time I can!!!!” It’s conveniently located in downtown Elkins and shares space in the Historic Railyard with the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad.

The railroad offers multiple excursion options to experience the beautiful scenery of West Virginia. The Cheat Mountain Salamander, for example, takes you through some of the wildest mountain wilderness you will ever experience, and the Durbin Rocket, operated from the Durbin, page 28 >>

TRAVELING BY PLANE: YOU MIGHT THINK YOU GOT THE LOW-DOWN ON FLYING, BUT BEFORE YOU BOARD THE PLANE, CHECK OUT THESE TIPS.

If you are looking to save a couple bucks, book

your trip at least 6 weeks in advance; people tend to pay the lowest price about 42 days prior to the departure date. If your schedule allows, fly out in the middle of the week. There are less people traveling, which means lower ticket prices to fill the plane. After that is all done, you are on your way to the airport! Once you get there, make a note of where you parked. (We have all forgotten where our cars are located and after a long trip your memory is less reliable.)

Do a quick bag check to make sure nothing sharp was packed and your electronics are in order before going into the airport. That will help you get through security faster. Bring along items such as headphones, neck pillows and comfy shoes; these will help make your plane ride more satisfying. Set your suitcase apart from everyone else’s. No one likes sitting at baggage claim after a long flight sorting through luggage. If you can’t buy luggage in an unusual color or pattern to help distinguish it from the rest, consider adding a distinctive colorful tag or other marker. Before booking any overseas flights, make sure you

double-check document requirements for any foreign countries you hope to visit. Some countries require either a visa and/or passports for entry. Each country is different, so make sure you get the info ahead of time.

TRAVELING WITH PETS: TRAVELING WITH PETS THIS SUMMER? MAKE SURE THEY ARE WELL TAKEN CARE OF AND PROBLEM-FREE WITH THESE TIPS.

We all love our pets, but there’s much more to keeping your furry friend safe and happy than just opening the car door. First off, before a road trip, it’s good for your pet to go

to the vet to make sure they are in good health. Some animals get very anxious when they are in the car, so talk with your veterinarian to see if there are sedatives available. Your pet should also wear a reliable collar with your address and telephone number on it for emergencies. It’s usually a good idea to harness or otherwise restrain your dog when riding in the car. You’ll be less distracted and it will also prevent the animal from getting hurt if you have to stop suddenly. Since some pets get motion sickness in the car, give them a small snack, preferably high in protein.

spend a little bit of time playing or walking to get rid of some

This exhibition highlights the artist’s sculpture exploration, from welded steel and formed aluminum to shaping Plexiglas into colorful vacuum-formed pieces that are both illuminated and motorized. Gruber embarked on her more than six-decade career working in two dimensions on canvas that quickly evolved into three-dimensional shaped canvases. It was a natural evolution for the artist whose inquisitive nature led her to continually adapt her medium and working method from painting to sculpture, from photography to video over the course of her career.

TRAVELING WITH KIDS: TRAVELING BY YOURSELF CAN BE DIFFICULT ENOUGH. THROW THE WHOLE FAMILY IN THE MIX AND YOU COULD HAVE A REAL DISASTER ON YOUR HANDS IF YOU DON’T PLAN PROPERLY.

First, be as prepared as possible. Make sure you have snacks and activities, and if you have more than one child, make sure the snacks and drinks are exactly the same for all kids. There is nothing worse than backseat fights.

Give yourself a LOT of travel time if driving. You’re going to have to stop frequently for bathroom breaks. Accept it now, so you won’t resent it later. Also, give your kids snacks right before the anticipated bathroom stop so they won’t make a convincing case to buy over-priced junk food from the rest stop.

Even if you don’t normally let your children play with electronics or watch television, now is the time to make exceptions. Take advantage of the technology you have access to, if not for your own sanity, then for those around you on your trip.

Make sure you buy car chargers for all of their electronic devices. If you keep the children plugged in as much as possible, it gives you more time to enjoy the music you want to listen to instead of listening to sing-a-longs for 10 hours straight.

Bring new books and toys, so you can read them stories that they’ve never heard before, or so they can play with new games that will hold their attention longer than familiar toys. While it is easy to remember to pack spare clothes for the kids, don’t forget a change of clothes for yourself, just in case someone gets sick.

Lastly, never forget the advantages of inviting parents or a babysitter to come along on the trip! CITY PAPER TRAVEL GUIDE 2013 ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT 35

TRAVELING WITH A LARGE GROUP: IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON TRAVELING WITH A LARGE GROUP, THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO IS TALK IT OUT. GET EVERYONE TOGETHER AND DISCUSS WHAT THE MUST-SEES ARE. THAT WAY, YOU WILL GET A FEEL FOR SMALLER GROUPS THAT CAN GET TOGETHER TO SEE AND DO THE SAME THINGS. FROM HERE YOU CAN CREATE A ROUGH DRAFT OF A SCHEDULE. KEEP THESE THINGS IN MIND WHILE TRYING TO CREATE AN ITINERARY:

Do not expect everyone to be together the entire trip. It’s ok to break up into smaller groups. Research beforehand. Find out travel distances from one place to another, and how long it will take you once you reach your destination. One benefit of traveling with a large group is group discounts. Use website deals to save money. Don’t be overly ambitious. The last thing you want is a group full of stressed vacationers.

It’s ok to have your own agenda. Don’t feel compelled to follow the herd if there is something you really want to do. It is your vacation, too.

Pack snacks. With larger groups, you will have to wait longer. Have snacks on hand to stop hunger-fights.
