BEST OF PGH 2024
INTRODUCTION
BY ALI TRACHTA // ALI@PGHCITYPAPER.COM
This year, maybe more than ever, we can all agree that voting is important. First and foremost, in this upcoming November election (stay tuned for our comprehensive Election Guide with details on candidates up and down the ballot). But second to that, the most consequential vote you can make in this town, we think, is for Pittsburgh City Paper’s Best Of PGH Reader’ Poll winners. And boy oh boy, did yinz turn out.
More than 25,000 of you, to be more precise, cast a staggering 321,269 votes up and down our ballot, creating a catalog of the abundant coolness permeating this city. Different people, places, and businesses, all nominated by you, duked it out for the top spot in categories like Best Nail Artist, Best Black-Owned Hair Salon, Best Happy Hour, Best Pierogies, and Best Bike Trail, as well as in curveballs like Best Bar to Drink Alone, Best Place to Celebrate Your Divorce, and Best Place to Have Sex in Public (do not tell them we sent you).
But we still wanted to have more fun, so this year, City Paper’s editorial team threw in a bunch of extra Staff Picks to help you find some hidden Pittsburgh gems like Best Place to Get a Weird Flash Tattoo, Best Shitty Beer, Best Neighborhood to Pretend You’re on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, and Best Unexpected Place to Spot Hotties.
So dive in, enjoy, and a big, big thank you for exercising those voting muscles. Next, fellow Western Pa.-ers, we’ll use them to save democracy.

BEST VOGUER HAZELL AZZER
BY TARA FAY COLEMAN // INFO@PGHCITYPAPER.COM
Voguing is a highly stylized form of dance that originated in the Black and Latinx LGBTQ ballroom communities of Harlem and began as a way for marginalized individuals to express themselves and gain recognition in safe spaces. Inspired by the poses seen in fashion magazines, voguing evolved into a complex dance style that includes distinct elements (I love a good death drop!).
Within the local ballroom scene, Hazell Azzer has become a standout performer in what he describes to Pittsburgh City Paper as a community that, while small and intimate, is progressive and deeply passionate, “where everyone in the space can come together to support one another, despite occasional disagreements.”
Azzer was first introduced to voguing in middle school by a friend named Tokyo, who noticed his love for dance. For Azzer, voguing became a form of therapy, allowing him to express emotions ranging from anger to sadness to sensuality, likening it to “painting with your body.” Voguing, he emphasizes, is “just one part of the broader ballroom culture, which also includes categories like runway, fashion
(foot-eye-bag wear), and beautification (sex siren, realness, body).”
Though many people only recognize Azzer for voguing, he is much more — a voice, an advocate, and a symbol for his community. Azzer serves as the AIDS Free Pittsburgh community outreach and engagement coordinator and often wears red, black, white, blue, or yellow to represent important causes like HIV awareness, African American solidarity, peace, and self-love. His next goal is to establish an organization that promotes healthy life choices and provides affordable or free clothing for foster care teens.
Azzer encourages anyone looking to get involved in ballroom culture by “simply taking the leap, asking questions, staying humble, and ensuring that one’s personal life is in order before diving into the scene.”
“Overall, in Pittsburgh, to understand or become a member in our ballroom scene, you must understand the culture first and then learn where you fit into that,” says Azzer.
Some upcoming events to look out for include regular vogue practice at the QMNTY Center and voguing workshops at True T PGH. •

Despite the name of their business, Abelard “Bob” Rudenborg artfully renders more than just frogs. The artist tells Pittsburgh City Paper they draw inspiration from Dungeons and Dragons, kawaii, and other sources to produce “various frog-specific stickers and plushies,” as well as homages to characters like Sonic the Hedgehog and Remy from Ratatouille. A cursory scroll through their Instagram brings up images of creatures including platypi, assorted bugs, cats, opossums, and, of course, frogs, to the more fantastical Mothman and dragons.
Rudenborg uses their versatile talent to bring cute, cuddly, sometimes creepy creations to life, whether it’s through illustration, woodcutting, or comics (their first self-published comic, Pip, depicts “the first day of life of a small sentient onion” and they recently started a webcomic about what they call a “lil slime frog”). Whatever the medium, Rudenborg’s website emphasizes that they remain “a little weirdo on a lilypad just trying to have a nice time.” -Amanda Waltz

MUSIC + NIGHTLIFE
PITTSBURGH CITY PAPER
BEST NEW BAR POETRY LOUNGE
BY AMANDA WALTZ // AWALTZ@PGHCITYPAPER.COM
Locals lamented the loss of a chill spot to enjoy cocktails, live music, and a rotating selection of vinyl when, in 2023, the owner of Whisper Nest announced that the Millvale bar would close after just three short but successful years in operation. Thankfully, two business owners quickly stepped in to continue the bar’s legacy.
Sean Enright and his partner, Andy Tepper, turned the former Whisper Nest space into the Poetry Lounge. The two combined their respective service industry backgrounds — Enright has managed or tended bar at various Pittsburgh establishments, and Tepper owns the now in-flux Friendship restaurant Spork — to deliver eclectic programming, delightful drinks, and inventive bar food.
Enright tells Pittsburgh City Paper they wanted to add their spin to the bar while keeping the dive-inspired aesthetic and commitment to music.
“I always wanted it to be a literarythemed bar, but we also wanted to pay homage to Pittsburgh’s rich musical history,” Enright explains.
As the new name suggests, poetry and spoken word events are fixtures at the bar, alongside nights dedicated to karaoke, LGBTQ events, and mostly local music acts. Poetry Lounge patrons will see images of literary greats like Ernest Hemingway, Charles Bukowski, and Jack Kerouac, a gallery of concert posters Enright has collected over the last 25 years, and a custom mural, by local artist Rick Bach, that pays homage to Pittsburgh’s music scene.
“So, yes, music was always meant to have a place at the Poetry Lounge, but we also wanted to have a space where literary events could coincide with screamo-punk-rock and other genres of music,” says Enright.
Bibliophiles and wordsmiths will find a place to read and, possibly, publish their works; in addition to a weekly Open Mic Night with Pittsburgh Poetry Collective, local poets can publish chapbooks under Poetry Lounge Press, part of which, Enright says, includes book releases, signings, and readings. The new space also allowed Enright to relaunch yawp, a literary zine he co-edited in early 2000s.
Given Enright’s bartending background — he co-authored the book Pittsburgh Drinks: A History of Cocktails, Nightlife & Bartending Tradition — it stands to reason that creative drinks are a major part of the Poetry Lounge’s appeal. Enright says the bar’s most popular offerings are the Galeophobia and A Murder of Goth Chicks, both of which are tiki-inspired.
As the bar approaches its first anniversary on Oct. 1, Enright reflects on how Millvale has accepted Poetry Lounge “with open arms,” and hopes to ensure that the space serves as a place for him and Tepper to share their passions while welcoming everyone.
“We open at 3 p.m. every day, and the music events end by 10 p.m. weekdays, 11 p.m. weekends, so if you’re looking for some place to just relax, read a book, do some work, play some pinball, or just chill out, there’s no better place than Poetry Lounge,” says Enright. •

Pittsburgh’s rap scene has taken body blows in recent years, with Jimmy Wopo and Mac Miller cut down in their prime. But artists keep percolating up through the underground anyway with fresh sounds, proof that the Steel City’s hip-hop bench is deep. Lil Lenny, who’s been honing his craft since at least 2013, has come off that bench with a spate of recent EPs and shows backed by a funk band with a full horn section. With a sharp delivery, clean production, and a mix of chill but envelope-pushing songs, Lil Lenny is one of the artists who proves the heart of hip-hop still beats loud in the ’Burgh.

Best of Health Care Advocacy
Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania is proud to be this year’s City Paper “Best of Health Care Advocacy” organization, and is even prouder to offer these services for all patients of any gender.
• Prescribing and providing birth control options, pregnancy testing, and other family planning services.
• STI testing and treatment for both regular wellness checks and acute symptoms.
• Breast cancer and cervical cancer screening (HPV/Pap test,) and treatment referrals.
• Gender affirming care, including hormone therapy, referrals to trans- and nonbinary-friendly therapists, housing aid, and more.
• Abortion, with in-clinic abortion and the abortion pill options available*. Both
are safe, and very common.
Birth Control Services
Birth control is a safe and easy way to prevent pregnancy. Some types of birth control can also help treat certain health problems or provide other health benefits — like making periods lighter and less painful. Almost everybody uses birth control at some point in their life.
Birth control isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are lots of different birth control methods that work in different ways, and that’s where we come in. A staff member at your nearest Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania health center can provide up-to-date, medically accurate information about all of your birth control options, and
the pill. It’s good to plan ahead and think about the best way for you to use the pill correctly.
The IUD
An IUD is a tiny “T” shaped device that’s put into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It’s long-term, reversible, and one of the most effective birth control methods out there. IUD stands for Intrauterine Device (basically: a device inside the uterus). Both copper IUDs and hormonal IUDs prevent pregnancy by changing the way sperm cells move so they can’t get to an egg. If sperm can’t make it to an egg, pregnancy can’t happen.
One of the awesome things about IUDs is that they last for years — but they’re not permanent. If you decide to get pregnant or you just don’t want to have your IUD anymore, it can quickly and easily be taken out. You’re able to get pregnant right after the IUD is removed.
The Condom
help you get the method that’s best for you. Here’s info on some of the most common methods!
The Pill
Birth control pills are a kind of medicine with hormones. Birth control pills come in a pack, and you take 1 pill every day. The pill is safe, affordable, and effective if you always take your pill on time. Besides preventing pregnancy, the pill has lots of other health benefits, too. The hormones in the pill safely stop ovulation. No ovulation means there’s no egg for sperm to fertilize, so pregnancy can’t happen.
Forgetting pills, losing the pack, or not refilling your prescription on time are some of the main reasons why people might get pregnant when they use
The pill and IUDs are really good at preventing pregnancy, but they won’t protect you from sexually transmitted infections. Luckily, using condoms every time you have sex really lowers your chances of getting or spreading STIs. Condoms also protect against pregnancy — so using condoms + a hormonal birth control option together gives protection from STIs AND pregnancies. Condoms are thin, stretchy pouches traditionally worn externally on the penis during sex. They’re easy to use, and easy to get.
Internal condoms — also called “female” condoms — are an alternative to external condoms, though they can be harder to find, and tend to cost more. (Fun fact: we offer them for free, at PPWP!) Instead of going on the penis, internal condoms go inside the vagina or anus for protection from pregnancy and STIs.
You can use water-based and silicone lube with any kind of plastic condom. You can generally use oil-based lubes with plastic condoms — except for polyisoprene condoms. If you’re not sure whether your lube is safe to use with your condoms, check the directions on the condom package or the brand website of your condoms to make sure. •
Schedule an appointment with PPWP to find the best birth control option for you.

CITY PAPER READERS' POLL
BEST GLUTEN-FREE OPTIONS
MULLETT’S
// CWILLIAMS@PGHCITYPAPER.COM
hile Uptown Mt. Lebo gets a lot of the municipality’s shine, the Beverly Rd. business corridor is packed with global cuisine, local businesses — and Greater Pittsburgh’s best gluten-free menu at Mullett’s. The intimate modern restaurant won Best New Restaurant last year, and this year, Mullett’s has rightfully been recognized for combining quality with allergy awareness.
Mullett’s hasn’t taken long to establish itself as a South Hills destination.
On the day we visit, it’s crowded with customers, and many of them greet staff by name when they enter and search for a rare empty table.
The simple menu of small plates and bites can be entirely glutenfree, with all glutinous items stored in a separate area — since that’s why Mullett’s won, that’s how we order: spinach and artichoke dip, Brussels sprouts, brisket crostini, and a banh mi, all gluten free.
The small plates arrive quickly. Happily for those who don’t need to avoid the troublesome protein, it’s almost impossible to tell the bread isn’t “normal” — while maybe a bit less spongy, the brisket crostini comes on delicious toasted baguette that’s soft in the middle, crusty on the edge, and capable of holding a nice little portion of brisket and carmelized onions.
We pair these appetizers with a cocktail made with snap-pea-infused vodka. Everything goes together beautifully, and there’s just enough left at the end to take half the delectable banh mi home for lunch. Meanwhile, the regulars keep coming and going, the atmosphere buoyant with laughter.
Mullett’s is proof that most restaurants are at their best when they have a specific mandate, a concise menu, and quality ingredients. Gluten may bind together cereals, but you certainly don’t need it to bind together bites, cocktails, and community.

Who needs forks when you have injera bread? As the lone outpost for Ethiopian cuisine, Tana has a special place in Pittsburgh. For the uninitiated, Ethiopian food is usually served on large, family-style platters atop what is essentially a massive pancake. This injera bread is moist and delicious, turning every little fingerful of tibs or doro wat into a savory dumpling. Whether you’re a vegetarian or want to go all-in on a meat sampler, Tana provides a convivial setting for fine finger food. Add to that some refreshing St. George’s lager or a glass of Ethiopian honey wine and you’ve got yourself a great East Liberty date night.

MARKET
4978 Middle Rd., Gibsonia. wagnersmarket.com
Shopping at Wagner’s is the epitome of shopping local. This small, familyowned market has been serving the Gibsonia area for decades, offering local produce and other locally sourced products and butchering meats inhouse. And, sometime within their 90-plus-year history, they perfected their fried chicken recipe.
If you can find it, tucked behind dense green trees on a winding road up in the ‘burbs, you’ll discover that this hideaway is putting out some damn fine fried chicken. It’s juicy, it’s crunchy, and the crust is perfectly seasoned. Party planners should order at least a week ahead of time by phone to make sure there’s enough chicken for everyone. Or, if you’re having a sudden fried chicken craving for one, stop in, make sure you get the broccoli salad to go with it, pop down in front of the TV, and enjoy. -Stacy Rounds

A core memory of my yinzer childhood is sitting in Big Jim’s nearly every Friday, eating provolone sticks for dinner and staring at the wall. Well, not the wall, exactly; I was mesmerized by a bizarre, glowing, electronic piece of technicolor landscape artwork that hung in the dining room and scrolled by on a loop. Last I checked, that contraption is gone, but the vibe, stellar food, and low, low prices are as reliable as ever at Big Jim’s in the Run. Order something Italian, order something fried, order something fried and Italian. Whatever it is, you won’t be sorry, and your wallet won’t feel much of a hit.

PUSADEE’S GARDEN
5319 Butler St., Lawrenceville. pusadeesgarden.com Pusadee’s is now in the third phase of its Pokémon-style evolution. While this Upper Lawrenceville staple started out as a humble BYOB Thai spot perfect for thrifty couples, it quickly became beloved for its titular garden, a bountiful oasis along a once-sleepy stretch of Butler. Soon, Pusadee’s had a liquor license and a long wait list — and then it closed for over a year, re-emerging as a palatial restaurant with reconfigured garden seating. The lush plantings, sleek interior, and a menu of elevated Thai staples and bespoke cocktails make this the ultimate Pittsburgh date spot for romantic al fresco and indoor dining. What can a grateful vegetarian say about Spak that has not already been expressed? In a town where meat has a chokehold on most restaurants and bars, this Garfield spot has given vegans and vegetarians a place to satisfy their cravings for the pizza, wings, and hoagies that have long been unavailable to them. Rather than settle for a grilled veggie sandwich or cheese-less pizza, diners are treated to plant-based pepperoni, vegan cheese without the notoriously gluey texture, and, most importantly, dairy-free ranch in which to dip their crusts and perfectly friedand-sauced seitan wings. In a landscape of overpriced, fussy restaurants and lackluster fast food, Spak remains a consistently delicious, welcoming place for everyone across the dietary spectrum to gather and enjoy a slice. -Amanda Waltz

BEST BLACK-OWNED BARBERSHOP
DEV’S BARBERSHOP
BY TARA FAY COLEMAN // INFO@PGHCITYPAPER.COM
The Black barbershop has long served as more than just a place for a haircut — it is a cultural institution, a hub of community life, and a symbol of Black resilience and entrepreneurship. Rooted in a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century, and includes connections to the Harlem Renaissance and the Civil Rights movement, these spaces have provided African American men in Pittsburgh and beyond with grooming services and a safe place for conversation, connection, and solidarity.
Devon “Dev” Knight is the proud owner of Dev’s Barbershop, a community cornerstone that has been in business for nearly six years. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Knight is a Penn Hills High School graduate who attended Edinboro University on a basketball scholarship, earning a bachelor’s degree in business. His passion for giving back to the community is evident in his business practices and book, The Barber’s Guide to Passive Income, which shares his insights on entrepreneurship and investing.
Knight recalls falling in love with barbering in 2002 during his sophomore year of high school when he first asked his mother for a pair of clippers. Since then, his path has been marked by perseverance, particularly when his shop faced its greatest challenge during
the COVID-19 shutdown. Thankfully, Knight’s financial preparedness helped him weather the pandemic.
Describing himself as a sponge, Knight credits his success to learning from various people and experiences, always applying what works best for him. His barbershop fosters an environment of respect and mentorship, especially for the younger generation. “There’s no cursing in the shop. I like a peaceful, relaxed environment where everyone feels comfortable,” Knight tells Pittsburgh City Paper
Beyond the clippers, Knight mentors kids daily, teaching life lessons, listening to their perspectives, and encouraging them to reach their full potential. Looking ahead, Dev is focused on personal growth in all areas of his life, while continuing to invest in real estate and other business ventures.
On being recognized by City Paper’s Best Of PGH Readers’ Poll, Knight says, “It means a lot. I think this is something special that CP is doing for entrepreneurs. Shining a light on people in so many different fields is pretty cool. For me, it’s always a great feeling knowing that all the hard work and dedication you put into how you run your business is being recognized. I’m thankful for everyone who voted for me. That’s a lot of love, and I appreciate it.” •

PERSONAL TRAINER ZAK BELLANT
636 E. Warrington Ave., Allentown. deathcomeslifting.com
Zak Bellante’s vision of misfits has given Pittsburgh something truly special: a gym for basically anyone in any body. While Death Comes Lifting, from an aesthetic point of view, suits its Allentown home perfectly, it’s what’s inside this pink Victorian building that really matters — namely, an inclusive environment and playlists curated for metalheads, punks, and hip-hop stans alike. Motivated both by his past struggles with health and a nonlinear fitness journey, Bellante brings something that’s harder to find at commercial gyms: empathy. It’s largely Death Comes Lifting’s community mindset that’s propelled him to the top of this list, but hosting badass events such as doom-metal yoga classes certainly doesn’t hurt, either.

BEST BLOG WHAT SLEEPS BENEATH
BY RACHEL WILKINSON // RWILKINSON@PGHCITYPAPER.COM
Talking with the trio behind What Sleeps Beneath , an online magazine for horror criticism, it quickly becomes evident you’re in the presence of true fans. The site — this year’s winner for Best Blog in our Best Of PGH readers’ poll — was born on Friday the 13th. Five years ago, founding contributors and friends Destiny King, Ande Thomas, and Theresa Baughman got together for a movie night — a triple feature of The Witch, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and First Reformed — when things “devolved.”
Thomas, whom the group identifies as the biggest diehard, brought notebooks to record everyone’s thoughts after watching.
What ensued was a wide-ranging debate, touching on “the church as a driving force in horror, the history of monsters, and the cinematography of sickness and blood on screen,” according to the blog.
“It was just kind of a fun event,” Thomas remembers. “But it worked out so well that we decided that we should make it not only a regular thing, but publish our thoughts on the internet,” he tells Pittsburgh City Paper with a laugh.
Today, What Sleeps Beneath is a repository for horror movie and book reviews, interviews, and original academic research. Over the last 18 months, they’ve brought on regular contributors, and will soon move from volunteer to paid work.
The writing runs the gamut of subgenres, encompassing psychological horror, slasher films, and body horror to name a few, with recent entries like “Childbearing Horror Films for Mother’s Day.” King is currently cataloging bear attacks (true and fictional) in horror
cinema. She tells City Paper her favorite horror movie is Jaws, giving a sense of the blog’s range, as you might not think of the quintessential summer blockbuster as an animal horror film.
Rather than a niche project, says Baughman, they intend for What Sleeps Beneath to be outward-looking and expansive, exploring horror as an important cultural touchstone and barometer for social anxieties.
“At any point in time, when there is some kind of social, economic, [or] political upheaval, there’s always a direct reflection [of that in] the horror community,” Baughman says.
What Sleeps Beneath also arose amidst a resurgence of original horror movies, like those put out by indie arthouse producer A24.
“[We’re] really trying to focus our efforts on elevating the horror genre as an actual, genuine academic pursuit, in addition to being something that’s really fun … so, including everybody,” Baughman tells CP.
Though the blog draws visitors nationwide, “we’re all very much Pittsburgh people,” says Thomas, “so it’s important to us to make that part of our identity.”
What Sleeps Beneath recently collaborated with the Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival’s Thriller Picture Show and the Pittsburgh-based George A. Romero Foundation.
Looking toward the future, “we really do want to hone in on those relationships and just get more involved with the communities that are [already] here,” adds King.
“Because Pittsburgh has such a vast history with horror, it’s kind of intrinsic to our nature,” Thomas says. •

SASSY SENSATIONS
BY JESSIE SAGE // INFO@PGHCITYPAPER.COM
Eight years ago, I was nine months pregnant with a 10-and-a-half pound breech baby who wouldn’t turn. I tried everything from having a doctor try to manually turn the baby, to prenatal yoga, to chiropractic. When the chiropractor tried to sell me an expensive foam wedge, my partner turned to me and said, “I’m pretty sure we can get one of these at a sex toy shop for much less.” Later that day, I waddled into Sassy Sensations and found exactly what I was looking for. Not for sex — but to invert my big belly in hopes of warding off a C-section.
The circumstances that led owner Vanessa Fuchs to open Sassy Sensations — a boutique that sells lingerie, sex toys, and lubrication — are almost as odd as the ones that led me to walk into her store. “When you go through a divorce, you go through goofy times,” she tells me from across a small table in the back of her Robinson location (she also has one in Castle Shannon and one in Ohio).
Indeed, in 1997, Fuchs was newly divorced and trying to figure out how to make ends meet as a scrap trader in the steel industry when her friend invited her to a home-based sex toy party. Though she resisted being there at first, by the fourth strawberry margarita, she started to think that she could also sell toys.
After a short stint with in-home parties, Fuchs realized the potential in creating a brick-and-mortar space that, in addition to products, could offer an inclusive, supportive environment for
people navigating their sexual wellness. Her journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Her battle to open the Robinson location included an eight-month court case against local authorities who had her business shut down eight days after it opened. It also included a confrontation with her father, who told her to just walk away from the case. “I said to him, ‘I love you, but if you don’t understand why I’m doing this, then you and I can’t talk about this again,’” she relays. “I didn’t care if it cost me my last penny, I was going to fight them, because I didn’t do anything wrong.” Her efforts were rewarded when she won her case and was able to reopen the store — the same one that gained recognition here in Pittsburgh City Paper’s Best Of PGH.
Over the years, Sassy Sensations has seen significant shifts in the sexual wellness industry including an evolution in product marketing and design, with a noticeable shift towards inclusivity. This change reflects a broader trend in the culture, where manufacturers increasingly recognize their customers’ diverse needs, including those of different body sizes and gender identities.
Sassy sensations has adapted to these changes by offering a wide range of products that cater to all customers, from those seeking pain management solutions post gender-affirming surgery, to those coming to terms with their own desires through exploration, and even to the occasional pregnant woman experimenting with off-label uses of their inventory. •

Though Beyond Bedtime Books recently celebrated 14 years in business, the neighborhood spot still comes across as a hidden gem. Located on Potomac Ave. in the heart of Dormont, the locallyowned independent bookstore, with its warm hardwood floors and pressed tin ceiling, exudes coziness, charm, and dare I say it, a little bit of 1998’s You’ve Got Mail (complete with a dedicated children’s room). This real-life shop around the corner, which even describes itself as quaint, brims with new, used, rare, and antique volumes, along with greeting cards, and promises it will gladly order any title your heart desires. Regular readings, giveaways, and events like Booze and Books, which lets readers sip a complimentary glass of wine with chocolate while they browse after hours, only sweeten the experience for bibliophiles -Rachel Wilkinson

I hope no one at Labriola’s is reading this, because if they are, they might find out they’re charging way, way less than Whole Foods for top-tier lunchmeat, and I really don’t want them to up their prices. Not only does Labriola’s have the best deli counter around, they also have everything you need to turn your kitchen into something that resembles Nonna’s, whether you had a Nonna or not. There are house-made sauces, sausages, lasagnas and raviolis; dozens of Italian baked goods; an incredible selection of staple ingredients from the old country; and an aisle with so many pasta varieties your head will spin like a stick of fusilli. Yes, you can have any pair of shoes your heart desires delivered to your door with a few simple clicks on your phone, but there are real advantages to going to an actual shoe store, and Little’s — the Squirrel Hill institution since 19 freaking 32 — proves that over and over again. Not only do they have an ample but well-curated selection of footwear for everyone in the family, the employees there understand how shoes are supposed to fit. If you’re wide or narrow, or between sizes, the person helping you is bound to find something that feels good and will last you. BEST VENUE FOR AGING CONCERT-GOERS
Mr. Smalls Theatre
Going to concerts gets harder with age. Moshing and dancing feel like work, and first your feet, then your knees, then your back start to ache. If you can still rock out over 35 without special insoles or the help of NSAIDs, I salute you — however, I’m increasingly likely to opt for upgrades like the Mr. Smalls balcony With no tall people in front of you to worry about, the view is always great. You also have direct access, through waitstaff, to the kitchen and bar, meaning no waiting in line. I once got upgraded to the box directly adjacent to the stage for a noise show and was delighted to smash a flatbread and beers with a direct, seated view of everything the band was doing, and it was perfection. If you’re a fellow aging millennial or older, spring for the box seats. You’re probably gonna spend the money anyway. 400 Lincoln Ave., Millvale. mrsmalls.com

BEST SLUTTY SUSHI ROLLS
Maya Sushi
When it comes to sushi, sometimes you don’t want to be demure. You don’t want to be mindful. Instead, you want heart-healthy raw fish doused in all kinds of delicious creamy stuff, and on those days, you should head to Maya Sushi. On their list of specialty rolls, you’ll find no shortage of choices that include cream cheese and generous drizzles of kewpie mayo with ingredients like “creamy salmon” and “lobster salad.” And yet, their rolls also include bursts of fresh flavor from things like mango, mixed greens, and jalapeno, making a decadent experience delightfully more elevated. Every single one on the menu is a treat. A few even come rolled in pink wraps like saucy little minxes. Meow. 2103 Murray Ave., Squirrel Hill. mayasushipittsburgh.com -Ali Trachta
BEST HOUSE-MADE RANCH DRESSING
Pizza Fiesta
There’s a Pizza Fiesta location just downstairs from City Paper’s downtown offices, and nary a week goes by that I don’t sneak out for a slice, not because I’m craving the pizza, but because I’m craving their ranch dressing. No shade to Fiesta’s pies — they’re perfectly decent — but far more delicious is whatever magic they’ve drizzled into that zesty, creamy white stuff. Most of their other dressings come prepackaged from Marzetti, but obviously, they know ranch is special and best made with love. And oh, it is. If you catch me licking that little plastic to-go cup, no you didn’t. Various locations. pizzafiesta.com -Ali Trachta
The T Red Line is the last transit line in Pittsburgh that really captures the je ne sais quoi of the Pittsburgh that inspired the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood intro sequence. Emerging from the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel heading to South Hills Junction might not be entering the Land of Make Believe, but the forested trip that leads you from the tunnel to Fallowfield Station overlooking Beechview comes close. And then there’s the neighborhood itself, increasingly a melting pot that’s home to Pittsburgh’s densest collection of Hispanic businesses. Taking the Red Line through Beechview is undoubtedly the best way to feel like McFeely in the ’Burgh (just be aware of ongoing construction).
-Colin Williams
As I’ve previously addressed, I’m no fan of the way disingenuous shock jocks profit off our city while living in the suburbs. What I am a fan of is taking it directly to these people on social media (until their homophobic fans become too much of a problem, anyway). StevefromPGH has been among the sharpest reply guys when it comes to perennial pot-stirrer Colin Dunlap, channeling Edvard Munch or QTing fellow Dunlap hater Mark Cuban in an oftensuccessful bid to flame the obnoxious radio host, and for that, we salute you. @ StevenEsquire -Colin Williams
BEST SHITTY BEER
I.C. Light Mango
Beer haters and local brewers alike can attest: I.C. Light Mango is Pittsburgh’s best shitty beer. Some Beer Advocate snobs rant and rave about this refreshing summer crusher, comparing it “horseshit” and “moldy broccoli,” but others get it: “quit lying to yourself. it slaps.” I don’t care if it has artificial sweeteners — it also has 95 calories, a hangover-resistant 3.8% ABV, and a delicious summer flavor. Swap out your mango lassi over Indian food. Take it to the pool. Bring it camping or to a baby shower. Who cares! It’s I.C. Light Mango. Someone will definitely finish the six-pack with you. -Colin Williams

LOCAL JOB PERK
Free transit as Pitt student/faculty
When I began teaching again as an adjunct at Pitt a couple years back, I neglected to get my I.D. card for a couple weeks in favor of riding my bike in the cold. What a fool I was! For I had neglected the Wonka’s Golden Ticket of Pittsburgh perks: free access to Pittsburgh Regional Transit. Is money tight? Free transit! Don’t want to drink and drive? Free transit! Roads unsafe for your ancient Civic? Free transit! Ready bus access and an e-bike have made it possible for my household to go down to one car — just think what could happen to ridership if free transit were expanded to include more locals. -Colin Williams
BEST AIR POLLUTION PROVIDER Clairton Coke Works
Ah, Pittsburgh mornings. The post-nasal drip, the gentle wheezing of a waking lung. When I step outside to go to work, there’s nothing I like more than a nice chestful of U.S. Steel’s finest hydrogen sulfide. At least 600 others over a oneweek span in August agree: The Mon Valley’s famed “smell of money” is part of this complete breakfast! It’s also a perfect reminder that, even though U.S. Steel apparently only employs around the same number of people in 2024 as online pet retailer Chewy, it’s still capable of providing world-class air pollution to over
a million Pennsylvanians. Even with smoky ol’ Battery 15 shut down, Clairton Coke Works is still the best of the bunch when it comes to malodorous gasses. We’ll see if the company’s would-be new owners can maintain this plant’s 108-
BEST RIVERFRONT DINING HACK
Eat’n Park Waterfront (Homestead) Patio
You don’t really think of the Waterfront as a scenic destination. And yet, it’s right there in the name: the steel-mill-turned-shopping-mall sits on the banks of the Monongahela River with the Great Allegheny Passage trail winding through it. In COVID quarantine, I took to walking the Waterfront GAP trail and discovered the restaurants along it all have outdoor seating with riverfront views, unbeknownst to me. While the now-closed Mitchell’s Fish Market boasted a choice patio — and I feel compelled to compliment Red Robin’s al fresco dining with festive string lights — Eat’n Park takes the cake for the Waterfront’s most picturesque meal. During warm weather, the chain’s open-air patio, dare I say terrace, is decorated with colorful window box planters, and lets diners glimpse the Mon, Homestead Grays Bridge, and the grazing goats of Allegheny GoatScape hard at work on the trail. Enjoy the view for the price of a Smiley Cookie (just don’t feed it to the goats).

BEST BAR FOR TRASHY DRINKS Hemingway’s Cafe
I’ve previously given my hot take that I like alcoholic drinks that taste good. That means goodbye to hoppy IPAs, barreled whiskeys, and other bitter beverages claiming to be highbrow, and hello to brightly-colored concoctions topped with candy and whipped cream, which I lovingly call Trashy Drinks. For those on my Epicurean path, there’s no better Trashy Drink stop in Pittsburgh than Hemingway’s Cafe. One of Oakland’s last true college haunts — which I came to know and love as a Pitt student — Hem’s has not strayed from its commitment to serving a rainbow of boozy pitchers and mason jar cocktails, usually garnished with gummy worms or pop rocks. Even if I’ve (mostly) aged out of Hem’s by now, I’m steadfast in my belief that it should be protected. Come for the nostalgia or to watch the game; stay for the kaleidoscope of drinks with throwback prices and sweet potato tots to help wash it all down. 3911 Forbes Ave., Oakland. hemingwayspgh.com -Rachel Wilkinson
BEST BAR THAT’S RESISTING GENTRIFICATION
Take A Break Bar
BEST PLACE TO BEAT THE WINTER BLUES
National Aviary Wetlands
There’s nothing like seeing a flamingo when there’s snow on the ground. Pittsburghers find themselves in this privileged position thanks to the National Aviary, where you can travel to the tropics and glimpse all manner of colorful birds during our interminable winters. I’m a year-round Aviary fan, but there’s simply no comparison to visiting during a cold snap. For the winter-averse like me, it’s healing to shed layers of bulky clothes and immerse yourself in heated habitats geared toward animals who’ve never seen snow. I’m particularly fond of the Wetlands, the Aviary’s largest space, and home to 30 free-flying bird species, precious natural sunlight, tall coastal trees, and a pond with wading flamingos that often has steam rising from it — a sure sign you’re not in frigid Pittsburgh anymore. To stave off seasonal woes, plant yourself on a bench, take in the far-flung fauna, and be sure to bring your binoculars. 700 Arch St., North Side. aviary.org -Rachel Wilkinson
In the throes of the COVID pandemic, it looked like we might lose this Lawrenceville institution, known for its cold beer, pool and videogames, and timeless neighborhood feel. Take A Break has already been recognized by Pittsburgh City Paper, voted the Best Dive Bar in our 2017 Best Of PGH Readers’ Poll, but as far as I’m concerned, that was a lifetime ago. Since then, I’ve become one of those annoying Pittsburghers who feels that, as everything is absorbed into a boxy mixed-use development, true dives are vanishingly few (I’m also looking at you, Jack’s Bar and Rock Room). Take A Break will always hold a special place in my heart for ordering pizza for the whole bar when the Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2016, and for at one time having a wall of chips for sale likely dating back to the last Cup hoisting. I recommend following the bar’s Instagram (yes, it has one, and it liberally uses clip art), where it almost made our Trashy Drinks round-up for featuring a rainbow-swirl whipped cream-topped shot called the Sandy Beach, posted without further comment. Don’t ever change.

BEST PLACE TO PRETEND PITTSBURGH HAS A MODERN TRANSIT SYSTEM
The T between Downtown and PNC Park, aka the North Shore Connector
As a Southerner, I’ll always be in awe of public transit — though after 12 years of commuting in Pittsburgh, I’ll assert our system certainly has its flaws. Mostly, I stick to buses in the East End, but semiannually I’ll make a pilgrimage to catch a Pirates game and, from Downtown, board a gleaming light-rail car that looks imported from the New York City subway. Passengers ride gratis in a designated Free Fare Zone and travel underneath the Allegheny River to emerge seamlessly at PNC Park. I get a kick out of the experience every time and think we’re underselling Pittsburgh’s own underwater tunnel. Little did I know the North Shore Connector was highly controversial when it opened in 2012, criticized as a boondoggle. But I’m here to say I shallowly enjoy the result, and its ease, efficiency, and fare-free model is one we might extend elsewhere. In the meantime, have fun holding your breath in the Pittsburgh Chunnel.

BEST PLACE TO EAVESDROP ON AWKWARD FIRST DATES
Hidden Harbor
If you’re a nebby jerk like me, your ears can’t help but perk up when the stammering of a messy first date is near. Hidden Harbor provides the perfect atmosphere to spy on people regretting that they swiped right — the Squirrel Hill tiki bar is quiet enough to eavesdrop on conversations and the powerful cocktails will loosen even the most reserved tongues. Sip on a crafted drink and act like you don’t hear the person next to you talk incessantly about their ex, or insist they have to get up early the next morning. 1708 Shady Ave., Squirrel Hill. hiddenharborpgh.com -Amanda Waltz
BEST PLACE TO GET A WEIRD FLASH TATTOO

Sometimes you just need a tattoo of a shark with hairy legs, a decomposing Disney character, or an angry sentient ice cream cone. Kindness Solidarity Design (KSD) in Homestead has you covered. BEST UNINTENTIONAL GRAFFITI ART GALLERY “Garlic World”
The Liberty Ave. and Main St. intersection has long caused headaches for drivers passing, leaving, or getting on the Bloomfield Bridge. Luckily, an unexpected hero emerged to give frustrated commuters a dash of levity. For years, a mysterious tagger has written absurd messages on the wall behind the Little Italy sign, producing masterpieces like “Welcome to Garlic World!,” “24 hour-Sky Fierra [sic],” “Sigurney [sic] Weaver still is alive,” and, more recently, “emma stoned,” among many others. The misspellings, pop culture references, and no-frills style place this somewhere between a public art project and street poetry. While each one inevitably gets covered up, we salute the Instagram account @pittsburghgraffiti for immortalizing them. -Amanda Waltz
BEST UNEXPECTED PLACE TO SPOT HOTTIES
Caffé Mona Bloomfield
Maybe it’s the crepes, the cozy, intimate atmosphere, or the all-around Europeanness of it all, but the Caffé Mona Bloomfield location does not miss when it comes to attracting all types of local cuties. Each time I enjoy a French-style brunch with a light, vibrant, perfectly dressed side salad, I marvel at how I am, with my shlubby weekend wear and (most likely) unwashed hair, the biggest uggo in the joint. Keep up the good work, Caffé Mona. 4200 Penn Ave., Bloomfield. caffemona.com -Amanda Waltz
BEST ULTRA-NICHE TRIVIA NIGHT
