FOREWORD Looking back 22 years ago, the Penang Chinese New Year Celebration (Miao Hui) was a street festival initiated by local folk back in 1999. Since then, it has taken root at the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has evolved into an annual event that Penangites will look forward to!

This time round, we have faced our greatest challenge thus far. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Miao Hui could not be physically held the way it usually was. Yet, we the planning committees, have not forgotten the aspirations we held when we organized the first ever Miao Hui. Instead of grumbling or complaining or for that matter, conceding, we have chosen to fight for our ideals. By incorporating modern technology and with the participation of local ancestral halls and cultural organizations, we have changed the model of Miao Hui this year and will be bringing you“Miao Hui Goes Online”.The point of organizing Miao Hui is to ensure the cultural inheritance, so that, instead of fading away, cultural traditions can continue to be passed on from generation to generation.

Culture comprises the history and wisdom of an ethnic group, and is an embodiment of the physical manifestation and inner spirit of the ethnic group.

One of the purposes in organizing Miao Hui is to create an opportunity for the younger generation of Chinese to join the festivities for them to further understand their culture, and at the same time, instill in them a desire to learn, inherit and innovate Chinese culture.

This year, the theme for Miao Hui is‘Cultural Gems’.A cultural gem is something that inspires or elevates your way of life, your view of life, or how you treat life, but it can also be the wisdom of your forefathers.

Every clan has its cultural gem, and we must all play our part in inheriting and passing on these gems!

A total of 20 three-minute short videos have been made to capture the essence of the cultural gems of the ancestral halls at the heritage site. With the help of the internet and online networks, we have adopted various styles in telling the stories of the cultural gems, in order to pass on and convey cultural inheritance. It is our hope that audiences from all age groups can get to know more about the cultural gems that were handed down by the forefathers in Penang.

Miao Hui is no longer a one-day celebration, it is in fact, a higher level of cultural inheritance. To organise Miao Hui, volunteers have to explore, learn and inherit culture along the way, but besides that, the people around us and the public joining us online will also be inspired to develop a unique understanding and appreciation of their own culture, and from that, we hope, they can start to recognise, accept, and be more confident of who they are.

An excellent culture can make one a better person, help solve societal problems, and even stabilize a country.

All that we do today, will become history when tomorrow comes. Let us, together, show the world the deeper meaning behind the Penang Chinese New Year Celebration!

ABOUT MIAO HUI Excellent cultural traditions are the‘soul’of an ethnicity!

It is only when you appreciate your culture, that you can understand who you are, and understand that, apart from the happiness that you can achieve from materialistic gains, there exists a higher level of happiness: spiritual happiness, and even happiness of the soul!

Located at the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Penang CNY Celebration (Miao Hui) is a cultural event organized by local organizations in Penang since 1999. Its formation was spurred by the aim and drive of promoting culture, and is a must-visit affair for Penangites and tourists alike.

For years, Miao Hui has been physically held in the heritage precinct of George Town, encompassing 12 streets and alleys.

Hundreds of stalls showcasing cultures and delicacies along the roads, along with the numerous performance stages at various corners of the event site have brought fun, joy and laughter to those who visit. More importantly, Miao Hui will have a different theme every year, and the 23 ancestral halls and community associations in the heritage site will showcase their own cultural gems in accordance with Miao Hui's theme. Visitors will be able to learn about the cultural assets that were handed down by the forefathers, and at the same time, become more aware about the need to appreciate and preserve the knowledge of the people, things and events that are slowly fading away from memory.

In light of the pandemic that continued into 2021, Miao Hui had to overcome the test of converting a physical event into a virtual one. This year, the scene of our volunteers rushing back and forth on the streets will not be seen on event day, as it has been replaced with the sights and sounds of late-night discussions in front of computer screens. Our enthusiastic volunteers have picked up new technologies, held more than 600 teleconferences, and also conducted countless hours of field trips and interviews. Our volunteers pushed on despite the bumps and obstacles along the way, just so that the cultural gems in our hands can be passed on in a different form. We cannot predict what the future holds, all we can do is to brace ourselves, and, armed with the will and determination to remain true to our original aspirations, forge ahead…

All of this is because of our belief, that only by preserving the culture of our ethnic group, that we can preserve its soul!

During Chinese New Year, travellers, no matter how far away they are, will be eager to go home and celebrate reunion with their fam-

ilies. The unique Moey She Temple in Malaysia is located in Penang.

During Chinese New Year, there is a particularly strong festive atmosphere in the Moey family temple. Most members of the Moey

clan were originally from Taishan, Guangzhou. After the struggle and hard work of their forefathers, the members of the Moey clan, both at home and abroad, have been reunited. They then settled

down in Penang, and established a family temple like the one in George Town. Such a place has become a mountain for future generations to rely on and a safe harbor for them to catch a breath. As

long as there is a family temple, there will always be a home for us.

Let us follow the footsteps of Stephen, the great grandson of one of Penang’s proudest children - the great philanthropist Mr. Yeap Chor Ee, into the historical building of the Lum Yeung Tong Yap

Temple. In 1884, Stephen’s great grandfather arrived in Penang at

the age of 17. Thanks to his enormous effort and perseverance, to-

gether with his fellow clansmen they managed to build the Yap Temple. His name was engraved in the Ancestral Tablet and is still

being worshipped on the altar to this day. In his adventure, Stephen will share with us what an Ancestral Tablet looks like and the

meaning that it carries, all through the eyes and narrative of a Caucasian.

In the early years of the Western Zhou dynasty, King Wu of Zhou en-

feoffed Duke Hu of Chen (Grandpa Hu) with a place called‘Chen’.

Grandpa Hu’s exceptional talents and excellent character made

him popular among the people, and he became the ruler of the Chen country for 60 years. Surnames are a lesson and a field of

knowledge. Understanding your surname is almost like understanding yourself. A surname and a story: The forefathers of Hu recorded their origins and experiences in a “Hu” manner. Ever wonder, what was the initial surname of the Hu ancestors? This

time, Duke Hu of Chen, the earliest Hu ancestor, will turn into an animated character, let’s follow him on the journey of historical story!

The Choo Chay Keong is an affiliated temple of the Yap Temple. Its

architectural art is particularly unique. It not only has retro-style blue carved stones, drum stones and stone lions, but also highly

sophisticated carvings of the Eight Immortals. Despite its solemn appearance, one can actually seek guidance from the Deities by burning incense followed by shaking bamboo tips, which is a

custom rarely seen in Penang. Legend has it that the Deity will pro-

vide divine guidance by directing the right tip to fall out. Each tip carries a number that will lead you to a specific message or poem.

In that poem lies the answer to your doubts. Of course, you have to be sincere when you ask, but all you have to do is just ask!

In the early days, Chinese people who came to Nanyang to make a living were drawn to one another because of their clan relationship.

They often gathered together to seek survival and development. It was

with this historical background that The Kwangtung and Tengchow As-

sociation was established in 1795. The purpose for the establishment of the Association is primarily to take care of the welfare of the commu-

nity associations under its wing, as well as to support and complement

one another. The transportation infrastructure was not well developed at the time, and so, many of the Chinese who came to Penang to make

and refined architecture. Every carving on the walls of the ancestral hall carries its own unique message. Since the beginning of time,

woods and stones have been used as a way of recording important people and events, and also as essential materials in construction.

Our host, Ah Bong, and his Khoo surnamed friend, will be treasure-hunting in the enormous building. Join them as they explore

the lesser-known beauty of stone and wood carvings, gleaned from the sculptures and decorations inside Khoo Kongsi.

entered Poh Hock Seah by using the secret passcode, together with

Xiao Pek Gong, they started a journey of exploring the uniqueness of the building features. Poh Hock Seah was established by Minnan

people from China, who worship Tua Pek Gong (Deity of Prosperity) and a shelter for fellow Minnan people from their hometown. There are

Sun Wui Wui Koon sits in Bishop Street, George Town, Penang, the street was once the place Chinese craft masters looked for a living

when they first came south to Penang. The video takes craftsmanship as the video theme, with dance choreography combined with

music led by percussion. The story is about how the craft masters

back in the day, who were without a dime, made a living by relying on nothing more than upon their craft, persistence and diligence.

Xiao Fu Xing, our mascot is depicted as a cute, round-shaped headed

yellow cattle with beady eyes and a small fringe on its head. It has no mouth, portraying the old saying

“talk less, do more”. This is seen as

such because yellow cattles are hard-working and humble beings
