While it is well known that Folic Acid helps prevent neural tube defects, the role of other nutrients such as Iodine, Vitamin D, Iron and DHA is less well recognised. Pharmacists have an important role in educating pregnant women and those planning a pregnancy on the importance of adequate micronutrient intake through diet or supplements. This presentation will detail nutritional deficiencies in the Australian population and the role of micronutrients during pregnancy.

Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU) is the name for hives (urticaria) that are chronic, reappear frequently for six weeks or more and have no known cause. The goal for CSU treatment is to provide symptomatic relief from itchiness/swelling and prevent further symptoms developing. Non-drowsy antihistamines are the cornerstone treatment for CSU and higher than standard doses may be required for adequate symptom management in this cohort. CSU patients will often present to a pharmacy first and the pharmacist can play a key role in providing suitable antihistamine options that have been shown to be effective in treating CSU.

Clinical pharmacy update | Understanding skin barrier dysfunction in atopic dermatitis: the importance of clinically effective management strategies to break the itch-scratch-cycle

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common type of eczema characterised by skin barrier dysfunction affecting people of all ages and ethnicities, particularly in early childhood. Eczema can have significant psychological burden and cause the sufferer much discomfort with recurrent ‘flares’ that can be difficult to treat due to the itch-scratch cycle. Research has shown that many eczema sufferers have genetic deficiencies in filaggrin related natural moisturising factors that occur naturally in the skin as well as reduced levels of ceramides which impairs skin barrier function. Pharmacists are often a primary contact for patients seeking advice on treatment at various stages of AD therefore effective management is crucial due to the chronic and relapsing nature of eczema. This session aims to provide an overview of AD management, highlighting the importance for early intervention and continued preventative measures.
