Micronutrients play a crucial role in pregnancy, supporting both maternal health and foetal development. Key micronutrients are essential for preventing birth defects, supporting neural development, and bone formation. While it is well known that Folic Acid helps prevent neural tube defects, the role of other nutrients such as Iodine, Vitamin D, Iron and DHA is less well recognised. Pharmacists have an important role in educating pregnant women and those planning a pregnancy on the importance of adequate micronutrient intake through diet or supplements. Clinical pharmacy update | Treating Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU) with confidence: How can pharmacists help?
Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU) is the name for hives (urticaria) that are chronic, reappear frequently for six weeks or more and have no known cause. The goal for CSU treatment is to provide symptomatic relief from itchiness/swelling and prevent further symptoms developing. Non-drowsy antihistamines are the cornerstone treatment for CSU and higher than standard doses may be required for adequate symptom management in this cohort. CSU patients will often present to a pharmacy first and the pharmacist can play a key role in providing suitable antihistamine options that have been shown to be effective in treating CSU.

Research has shown that many eczema sufferers have genetic deficiencies in filaggrin related natural moisturising factors that occur naturally in the skin as well as reduced levels of ceramides which impairs skin barrier function. Pharmacists are often a primary contact for patients seeking advice on treatment at various stages of AD therefore effective management is crucial due to the chronic and relapsing nature of eczema. This session aims to provide an overview of AD management, highlighting the importance for early intervention and continued preventative measures.

Cultural engagement forum: Creating cultural connections Venue: Meeting Rooms 7 and 8
10.45am – 1.00pm The Guild and its community pharmacy members are committed to supporting high quality, culturally safe and appropriate pharmacy services. While the Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) in community pharmacy is always paramount, community pharmacies are health hubs that play a role in ensuring the diverse health needs of their local community are met in the most effective way for patients.
In 2025, join us for an enriching Cultural Engagement Forum designed to explore the role of community pharmacy in creating and enriching connections amongst the rich tapestry of cultures within our communities. The forum aims to foster community pharmacists’ understanding, respect, and ability to collaborate with their patients from diverse backgrounds.
The forum includes an engaging line up of speakers to help participants connect to the theme of the forum. Through the forum, participants will gain greater understanding and knowledge about the provision of culturally safe services and care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, which will inform improved practice and outcomes in their work. Participants will be challenged and have an opportunity to learn, grow and be enriched through their involvement in the forum.
In 2025, the Cultural Engagement Video Competition returns, also with the theme of “Community Pharmacy, Creating Cultural Connections”. This is an opportunity for community pharmacies across Australia to emphasise the role of community pharmacies plays in the health and wellness and showcase how they are responsive to their patients’ needs and provide a culturally safe health care environment. Prizes include a free full APP2026 Registration (including the Street Party) for Best Video winner.
