JAZZ FESTIVAL 2024 Dear Jazz Festival Participants, We are excited to welcome hundreds of talented student musicians from throughout the region that are joining us for our sixth annual Purdue Fort Wayne/Sweetwater Jazz Festival 2024. There is nothing more thrilling for us than having the Auer Performance Hall echoing with music from so many high school and middle school musicians, led so expertly by their band directors and assistant directors.

The Jazz Festival continues to expand its reach in our area, this year bringing nineteen school bands to the Purdue Fort Wayne campus from Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. We know your students will benefit greatly from the exciting experience of performing in Auer Performance Hall.

Our clinicians this year are experts in their fields and hail from two very different parts of the country. They have exciting professional careers bringing with them a broad spectrum of educational experience. We thank Alan Baylock, a well-respected and sought-after jazz composer and educator from Denton, Texas; and Roxanne Stevenson, professor of music with Chicago State University for working with our students this year.

Whether our guest bands are using this experience to put the final polish on their upcoming state-run competitions or as a replacement for their participation in those events, each of the schools will receive valuable information on how to improve their performance of the pieces they have chosen to play.

JAZZFEST CLINICIANS Alan Baylock Born and raised in a small town in Southwestern Pennsylvania, Alan Baylock has composed music that is performed throughout the world. One of the most respected and sought-after jazz composers and educators in the industry today, he is the director of the Grammy-nominated One O’Clock Lab Band at the University of North Texas, and previously served 20 years as Chief Arranger for the USAF Airmen of Note in Washington, D.C. The Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra recorded three critically acclaimed CDs and performed throughout the United States for 15 years. Baylock graduated from Shenandoah University (B.M. ’90), where he later became Jazz Composer-in-Residence; and the University of North Texas (M.M. ’94).

Baylock travels extensively as guest conductor and clinician, and has been featured with over 100 professional, collegiate, high school (all-state and regional) and middle school jazz ensembles.

Alan is on faculty at the National Jazz Workshop (NJW) and directed the NJW All-Star Big Band in performances on the East and West Coast. He is an active member of the Jazz Education Network and is a strong advocate for women in jazz. In 2022, Alan teamed up with composer/arranger Annie Booth to establish Brava Jazz Publishing, whose mission it is to support and champion women composers and arrangers in the field of big band jazz by creating a platform for their music to be widely published and distributed.

Alan’s music has been performed and/or recorded by jazz greats Melissa Aldana, Michael and Randy Brecker, Regina Carter, Paquito D’Rivera, Kurt Elling, Maynard Ferguson, Stefon Harris, Jimmy Heath, Freddie Hubbard, Sean Jones, Dave Liebman, Allison Miller, Nicholas Payton, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Arturo Sandoval, Doc Severinsen, Tierney Sutton, Kenny Werner, Phil Woods, and many more. His eclectic talents have also led him to writing music for Roy Clark, Lee Greenwood, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Patti LaBelle, Spyro Gyra, Ronan Tynan, Wynonna, and symphony orchestras throughout the United States and abroad. His music is published by Alfred Music and ProJazzCharts. com.

Baylock lives in Denton, Texas with his wife, cellist Maria Baylock. In his spare time, Alan enjoys playing table tennis, and golfing with his UNT Jazz colleagues.

JAZZFEST CLINICIANS Roxanne Stevenson Roxanne Stevenson is Acting Department of Music Chair, Professor of Music Education, Director of Bands, Music Ed and Gospel Music Coordinator and Woodwind Instructor at Chicago State University. She earned a B.S. from Bethune-Cookman University and the M.S. degree from The University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, both in music education.

A saxophonist, she performed regularly with the weekly gospel music show “Singsation,” and Trinity United Church of Christ which aired nightly.

Currently, she is saxophonist and horn arranger for Salem Baptist Church of Chicago.

She has performed with Bernie Mac, Vickie Winans, Jean Carnes, Cherelle, the Chi-Lites and many others. She has been featured with her group “Roxanne Stevenson RSVP” on WLS-ABC 7, Chicago’s morning television show “Windy City Live”, Chicago’s “Gospel on the Pier,” WGN’s “Gospel Heritage,” Fox Television’s Christmas Special “For Colored Girls WGN,” the “African Festival of the Arts,” and the Chicago Jazz Festival. She is also saxophonist and/or arranger on CDs by several artists/groups, including Stellar Award/Grammy Award nominated “Unplugged” by Ricky Dillard and the “Stay Connected” CD by Trinity United Church of Christ that traces the music of Africans in Diaspora from Africa to America.

Professor Stevenson is the Jazz Coordinator for the Historically Black Colleges and UniversitiesNational Band Director’s Consortium; Interim Vice-President of the African American Jazz Caucus; Vice-President Elect of the Women Band Directors International and member of the Diversity Committee; Illinois Music Education Association; Jazz Education Network; and the Jazz Education Network’s Sisters in Jazz Committee.

She served as a panelist for the Illinois Arts Council, director and masterclass teacher for the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. She serves as adjudicator, panelist, and guest director for numerous marching, concert and jazz festivals and competitions, and has worked as band/choral director and a classroom/

music teacher in Indiana and Illinois public and private elementary and high schools. The Chicago State University Community Jazz Band, started in 1992 by Professor Stevenson, has presented clinics and performances at the Illinois Music Education Association All-State Conference, Indiana festivals, the Midwest Clinic Band and Orchestra Clinic, National Association for Negro Musicians Centennial Conference, and the Jazz Education Network Conference. The band was nominated for the 16th Annual Black Excellence “Best Performance in Jazz Award” presented by the African American Alliance of Chicago for its performance at Trinity’s Jazzapalooza.

Professor Stevenson also started the Chicago State University Community Concert Band, Gospel Ensemble, Marching Band, and created curriculum and coordinated the B.A. in Music Gospel Music Concentration.

Professor Stevenson is a contributor to the textbook Teaching Music Through Performance in Jazz Volume I and Volume II (assistant editor for upcoming Volume III), and the books Rehearsing the Jazz Band and The Horizon Leans Forward.

She is the author of the article “Novel to Normal: Seeing Women in Music” published in the Illinois Music Educator Journal and the Connecticut Music Educator Journal. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Mu International, and sponsor/honorary member and sponsor of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Sorority and Fraternity.

Professor Stevenson received the African American Arts Alliance of Chicago’s Black Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music – Jazz. The Absolute Winds of Change, a Tribute to Chicago’s African-American Women in Jazz, recognized her as a saxophonist/educator and she received a Christian Girls Rock award. She was a quarterfinalist for the 2nd Annual Grammy Music Educator Award; JEN’s AAJC Jazz Griot Award; and the CSU Black Heritage Ball’s Ntesie/Mate Masie Outstanding Administrator Award. Professor Stevenson is mother of daughters, Morgan and Bailey.

JAZZFEST COORDINATORS John Okley Egger is the Director of Music Education and Associate Professor of Music at Purdue University Fort Wayne where he teaches undergraduate courses in the areas of elementary music methods, secondary music methods, instrumental music methods, introductory courses to music education, and supervises student teachers. He was previously a graduate teaching assistant for elementary music methods at the University of Kentucky and a music teacher for Clinton Public Schools and Vicksburg Warren School District in Mississippi.

He completed his Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Kentucky during the Fall 2014.

His previous degrees include a M.A. in Music and Music Education from Teachers College Columbia University and B.M.E. from the University of Southern Mississippi. He has also completed all three levels of Orff-Schulwerk. Professional memberships include the American Educational Research Association, American Orff-Schulwerk Association, College Music Society, Indiana Music Educators Association, Kentucky Music Educators Association, International Society for Music Education, National Association for Music Education, Organization of American Kodály Educators, and Society for Research in Music Education.

Dr. Egger has presented music education research at the state, national, and international venues. His research interests include cooperative learning in music, teacher effectiveness, preservice teacher preparation, and community music.

Terry Fisher, director of the jazz ensemble, is well known to musicians across the region as the educational specialist for Sweetwater Band and Orchestra. When he is not visiting schools across the region to assess their musical needs he performs regularly with the New Millennium Jazz Orchestra, Old Crown Brass Band, and several other brass ensembles in the area. Terry earned degrees from Ball State University (B.M.E.) and Bowling Green State University (M.M.) and has more than 31 years of music education experience.
