For my Masters Thesis I focused on designing a solution by providing a facility that would ease the transition into adulthood for ASD individuals. With government paid assistance programs that end after high school, the ASD community is mostly left in the dark to decide the future of their careers.
Located in Northeast Philadelphia, the project is laid out as a campus with each building containing specific “zones”. Zones towards the back end of the building are used for focus areas and learning, while central zones are used for general circulation. Outer zones facing the courtyard are used as a place to retreat, relax, and socialize. With this same program organization seen throughout the campus, individuals can easily identify where they need or want to be at any given time.
As part of an international design competition through the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, I was tasked with producing a resilient design using concrete forms. With the program being a recreation center for a community along the Jersey shore, the design reflects the notion of rising tides and storms due to climate change.
Being raised above grade, the center is not only protected from potential high surf but also provides a public area of leisure below. The upper-level houses spaces for classes and a gym, while framed views connect the center to the nearby ocean and boardwalk.
The Archaeo Institute was a project proposal to highlight the historical importance of the Lenni-Lenape tribe who settled in the greater Philadelphia region in the late 17th Century. The design takes its inspiration from the gradual procession of the topographical lines and protrusion of the nearby cliffs.
As one enters the institute, they are guided along a sun lit corridor with artifacts from the site on display. At the end of this procession, visitors find the dig site. Below are early concept sketches exploring the relationship between contained administrative spaces and open and interactive programs.
