These are truly exciting times in Kappa Alpha Psi. The 33rd Grand Chapter Administration led by Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles, Jr., has Kappa on the move once again. Given the tremendous forward movement in Kappa we are almost a year removed from the Grand Chapter meeting held in Orlando, Fl. and all the accomplishments that the fraternity achieved during the Conclave.

In this past 3 years we have raised nearly $2.5 million dollars for our newly formed Senior Kappa Endowment Fund, St. Jude Partnership, the Piney Woods School for Boys and the National Museum African American History and Culture. During the fall and spring Membership Training Academy (MTA) program more than 2,000 men on both the undergraduate and alumni levels have joined our ranks. Most importantly, our undergraduate chapters are once again alive and active. It is a good time to be a Kappa!

As the Flagship Province you are at the forefront of this astounding transformation as Kappa experiences this new awakening. You continue to lead the way in philanthropic giving. We saw very encouraging progress with our MTA program this past Fall and Spring with few incidents we initiated over 220 new members into our ranks during the 2017-2018 fraternal year. The Eastern Province continues to be a source of leadership throughout the Fraternity, we continue to lead the way. The East has more than 10 National Chairman or Vice Chairman for various national committees/commissions and Grand Chapter initiatives, doing the work of Kappa. I trust that you will enjoy this edition of The Khronicle. It provides visual evidence of the renewed spirit that has taken hold in our Province and greater Kappa. As we prepare for the summer recess I extend best wishes to all our new Kappa graduates. As your student days have concluded your journey in Kappa continues. Remember always that this journey can leave no Brother behind!

I am humbled and honored to be elected as your new Eastern Province Reporter. I currently serve as your photographer as well and believe this is a great fit for my expertise. I am excited to publish my first magazine and capture the greatness of our bond throughout our Flagship Province. Throughout my service to our fraternity as reporter, I will expand on those reporters that held the position previously. I expect to publish relevant material as it relates to each local chapter’s work and achievements, as well as touch on current issues within our province paying special attention to brothers that are representing Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in a positive light.

Feel free to reach out to me with ideas and or suggestions as we move forward as one Kappa. Even if a suggestion isn’t directly used, it will be heard and incorporated in shaping the future editions. I thank you all for support and taking the time to read this edition of your Khronicle.

Province News EP Social Action April 12, 2018 Greetings Brothers of the Eastern Province, once again, the Brothers of the Eastern Province have reach goals of excellence when giving back to areas we have visited.

A name familiar with all in the Hampton Roads Area has served the community since 1892 by providing the Homeless with Shelter, Food and Recovery programs. The Union Mission Homeless Shelter, 5100 E.Virginia Beach Blvd. Norfolk, Va., “is committed to caring for the poor and homeless by providing for their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs helping people overcome their poverty and homelessness.”

The chapters of the Eastern Province were asked to bring “Socks and Shoes” to our 93rd Eastern Province Council. Socks are the most requested item in shelters across the country. Many homeless people walk miles per day in order to survive, leaving their socks threadbare and damp. Brothers were asked to bring new socks and gently used shoes, both adult, children, male and/or female.

A few dollars out of your pocket could mean the world to someone with cold feet. Additionally shoes are always in demand .Clean out your closet and donate a few pair of shoes when you drop off your socks.

The SAC is happy to say we left giant “footprints “in the Hampton Roads Area. At last count, there were over 400 pair shoes and over 1000 new socks were donated to the United Mission Ministries in Norfolk, Va. The items were presented to Ms. Linda C. Jones; Public Relations Director, during a photo op that included Province Polemarch Rob Jenkins, 26th Province Polemarch Cornelius Hudgins,III, Chairman Edward Thomas, SAC members, Brothers Eugene Sellers, Region 4, John Paige, Region 5, Philip DeBoe Region 3, and Isaiah Harvin, Region 1.

Edward Thomas Eastern Province Social Action Com., Chairman Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter (E) Brothers of the Eastern Province please relive the success of your Social Action Committee that you, the brothers of the Eastern Province made so successful: 92nd Eastern Province Council 2017 Brothers, this is a review of the Social Action Project held at the 92nd Eastern Province Council held in College Park, MD. Hosted by the Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter at the College Park Marriott Hotel and Conference Center from April 6-9, 2017.

“Socks and Shoes” was the theme of our project that was echoed throughout the Council. The purpose of our event was to supply Prince Georges County Family Crisis 4

Center and Homeless Shelter with an overly abundant supply of “Socks and Shoes”. That is exactly what the Eastern Province did, with the help of Baltimore (MD), Roanoke (VA), Columbia (MD), Charlottesville (VA), Bowie/Mitchellville (MD), and Fort Washington (MD) Alumni Chapters. With special thanks going to Richmond (VA), Fort Lee (VA), Danville (VA) and Dulles-Leesburg (VA) Alumni Chapters. The undergrads were included in giving to the Social Action Project with equal vigor; Alpha Iota, Epsilon Zeta, Eta Sigma, Eta Xi, Theta Psi and Rho Theta were also in the giving mood.

The Social Action Committee project was a great success, one of the most successful projects we have attempted. Success will be truly measured by the number of children or adults that take advantage of the Socks and Shoes. The committee wants to punctuate that the things we do individually are small; but collectively, we have impacted not only one family, but many families and individuals.

The total number of shoes donated to Prince Georges County Family Crisis Center and Homeless Shelter was over 400 pairs and over 200 pair socks. Special thanks goes to M and S Shoes Store of Norfolk, who donated 50 pair of new shoes.

Officers Workshop 2017 This is a review of the Social Action Projects held at Officers Workshop, August 18, 2017, hosted by Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter (FLAC). FLAC petitioned Eastern Province Social Action Committee Chairman Edward Thomas to have chapters donate backpacks with school supplies to help aide two schools in the Petersburg, Va. area. Approximately 165 book bags were collected and subsequently distributed to Harrison Elementary School of Disputanta, VA. and Vernon Johns Middle School of Petersburg. The brothers of FLAC delivered half of the back packs, full of school supplies, to Harrison Elementary School. Principle Christopher Scruggs expressed his gratitude and stated that he was “excited and appreciative of our fraternity for thinking of our students.”

C. Roger Wilson Leadership Conference 2017 The Eastern Province Social Action Committee realizes the importance of I-Kare, a response vehicle that’s only activated when a disaster occurs, example, Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. To give you a few statistics, 70 people are confirmed dead, damages caused by Harvey could total $190 billion, and over 80% of Harvey’s flood victims don’t have flood insurance.

Hurricane Irma killed 12 people in the US, at least 37 more people died throughout the Caribbean, estimated cost for Irma over $100 billion, 6.3 million Floridians ordered to evacuate the state, over 16 million people in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina were potentially without power, that’s not to even mentioned the Caribbean was devastated.

The Social Action Committee asked the Eastern Province Board of Directors to approve a $4000 gift to I-Kare, in which was overwhelming approved, not only was that money donated to I-Kare but over $4000 was donated by the chapters and individual brothers of the Eastern Province to help relieve the tragedy. Giving the Eastern Province over $8000 donated to a very worthy cause. Once again showing why we are the “Flagship Province, “leading the way!

Undergraduate Leadership Conference (ULC) Social Action Project 2018 The Undergraduate Leadership Conference was held in Salisbury, Maryland, February 9-12, 2018. Undergrads The Eastern Province Khronicle • Spring/Summer 2018 Edition • www.epkapsi.org

from all over the Eastern Province attended to gain knowledge on team building, networking, how to run an undergrad chapter and finding jobs.

As always, the Committee has come up with a project to help give back to the area. The SAC found an organization called Kidz ROC, Reaching Our Children, a nonprofit organization and sports program that uses sports, seminars, classes and activities to build social economical change in the lives of under privileged young men and women in the Salisbury community. Kidz ROC was asking for sports items such as basketballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, indoor sports items and educational board games to help in this cause.

Once again the project was successful, thanks to the undergrads who showed their love for helping the less fortunate.

Spring 2018 Cluster As we travel to the Fredericksburg, VA area for Spring MTA March 23-25, 2018, your Eastern Province Social Action Committee has been called on to fulfill a need, working with a local ministry that help homeless youth and young adults. U4C Victory Ministries work diligently throughout the year in the Fredericksburg Region to help meet the needs of youth and young adults within the homeless community. Although many receive free breakfast and lunch, those who are homeless will not have the opportunity to receive a normal breakfast or lunch.

Also the various items for survival are desperately in need as the young adults and homeless move from homes, shelters and even to the streets. We will make the difference.

There are homeless youth and young adults in the Fredericksburg Region who need our help. This is a call to Social Action for The Eastern Province to make a difference and impact the lives of many youth. The time to indoctrinate and provide a great foundation for our future Kappa men to actively participate in what we do and how we impact the communities we encounter through Social Action is now. This initiative also serves as a reminder to all of us to remember how blessed we are by using this opportunity to give back as we have been given. We as Kappa men must fulfill this need to step up, assist and support.

Because the need is so great, we have asked each region to donate certain items as not to have too much duplication of items and to have a diverse coverage of the numerous items need by the community.

The report has been written before the event, but based on our past events, the committee feels certain that this will be another successful event.

Conclusion In conclusion, speaking as Chairman of the Social Action Committee, we would like to thank you and every chapter for making your efforts so successful. It has been a joy to work with individuals and the chapters of the Eastern Province proving why we are the “Flagship Province”, and truly “Making a difference, One Brother at a Time.”

From these meetings I’ve tried to apply what I’ve learned to undergraduates when it comes to service, communication, and unity within our respective chapters and province as a whole. When it comes to undergraduates, I can see the passion behind all of the Chapter Polemarch’s that I’ve spoken with, however without the help of the members within their chapters, work cannot be done as effectively. Two or three people pulling all the weight when it comes to work in the chapters cannot achieve all of our goals we have put in place. This has been an issue since before my tenure as the Junior Vice Polemarch. I have and will continue to work with our brothers to find a solution for this issue.

GROWTH The Eastern Province started the year with 25 active undergraduate chapters. Within that 25 chapters 2 were being re-established as they both had been in revoke status the previous semester. The Coppin State University Chapter the Zeta Gamma of Kappa Alpha Psi and the American University Chapter the Kappa Chi of Kappa Alpha Psi. I am pleased to report both these chapters were able to have intake in the Fall 2017 semester and were able to re-establish themselves on their respective campuses. The Kappa Chi chapter also was able to have intake in the Spring 2018 semester to help grow their numbers. Also during the Fall 2017 semester 2 undergraduate colonies were stated in an effort to grow the undergraduate presence in the Eastern Province. Those colonies are the John Hopkins University Colony of the Lambda Zeta Chapter (Towson University) and the Christopher New Port University Colony of the Xi Theta Chapter (William & Mary). Both Colonies participated in the fall cluster and we successful in bringing in 4 members each.

ATTRITION The Eastern Province started the fraternal year with 25 active undergraduate chapters. As the fraternal year has progressed we have had some attrition as well. We currently have 3 chapters suspended at the time of The Eastern Province Khronicle • Spring/Summer 2018 Edition • www.epkapsi.org

the creation of this document. The Hampton University Chapter, the Beta Chi of Kappa Alpha Psi (Suspended September 2017), The Norfolk State University Chapter the Epsilon Zeta of Kappa Alpha Psi (Suspended February 2018), and The Bowie State University Chapter the Epsilon Sigma of Kappa Alpha Psi (Suspended March 2018). We currently have 2 chapters on cease and desist at the time of this documents creation. The Howard University Chapter the Xi of Kappa Alpha Psi and the George Mason University Chapter the Mu Mu of Kappa Alpha Psi. Giving the Eastern Province a total of 20 undergraduate chapters in good standing at the time of the creation of this document.

SOCIAL ACTION I am pleased to report that the Eastern Province Undergraduates have been very active in social action and community service during this fraternal year. Chapters have participated in various activities across our campuses. Things such as campus clean ups, participating in new student orientations, helping new students move in to dorms, holding food and clothing drives for the less fortunate. The undergraduate chapters have also been very active in the Eastern Province’s social action efforts. We have partnered with Province Social Action Chairman Brother Ed Thomas (Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter) on 5 projects this year. Starting with the backpack drive at officer’s workshop, to the projects during CRWLC, Fall Cluster, ULC, and Spring Cluster.

We will also be participating in the shoes and socks drive during this year’s Eastern Province Council. We collectively donated over $3000.00 to Kappa IKARE during the fall of 2017 with the University of Maryland Chapter the Theta Theta leading the way on this effort with a donation of over $2000.00.

GENREAL ACTIVITY 1.

Currently the Eastern Province has 5 applicants for this summer’s National Undergraduate Leadership Intuition in Atlanta, GA, June 2018.

The Eastern Province Undergraduate leaders have worked with the Province Planning Committee and Province Chief of Staff Brother Keshon Kelly to have some very exciting events (Step Show, Undergraduate Party, Kappa Quiz Bowl, and Undergraduate Summit) at this year’s Province Council.

Undergraduate chapters continue to be active in the Sunday of Hope initiative all across the Eastern Province, this effort is led by the George Mason University Chapter the Mu Mu of Kappa Alpha Psi, by being the leading undergraduate chapter in donations in the Eastern Province.

CONCLUSION What I feel could be improved upon is more assistance with the next following Junior Vice Polemarch once he enters office to help push him in the right direction. It was somewhat difficult getting started in a new position, with no contact with my predecessor, however any mistakes made are by my actions alone. I just believe that ensuring that the next JVP has everything he needs as far as contacts and documents can help him to have a steady foundation to build upon. I plan to be active and a stable resource for our next JVP. I feel like giving undergraduate brothers more opportunity to serve on province committees such as the Planning Committee, Social Action Committee, the MTA Committee and the Leadership, Workshops and Conference Committee would be great value for us the undergraduates and the province as a whole. This would keep undergraduates engaged and would give us buy in as to what is being planned and carried out across province functions.

My Brothers of the Eastern Province it has been my honor and pleasure to serve as your Province Junior Vice Polemarch for the 2017-2018 fraternal year. I have learned a lot and have made some mistakes, but I wouldn’t trade this valuable experience for anything. You all have been my teachers and mentors and I can never repay the lessons I have received. The Eastern Province is my family and I look forward to my next chapter in Kappa as I move forward in this journey.

Kappa Alpha Psi Promotes Civic Involvement Amongst African American Teens Washington, DC – Local chapters of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity participated in the inaugural Kappa League on Capitol Hill Conference on June 21, 2018, in the nation’s capital. During the four-hour program, teenage participants in the organization’s Kappa Leadership and Development League (aka “Kappa League”), a youth development program, visited the at the United States Capitol to meet with current House members and gain exposure to the legislative process. The event was hosted

by Representative A. Donald McEachin (D-Virginia), one of the newest members of the fraternity to serve in Congress. Other legislative hosts included Representatives Alcee L. Hastings (D-Florida), Alfred J. Lawson Jr. (D-Florida), and Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (D-Georgia) who are all members of Kappa Alpha Psi; and Representative Anthony Brown (D-Maryland). Participating Kappa League chapters were from Maryland, New York, and Virginia.

Kappa Alpha Psi is a 107-year old collegiate Greek-letter fraternity with a predominantly AfricanAmerican membership. One of the organization’s core objectives is to inspire service in the public interest, and civic involvement has been a potent means for improving conditions in the communities in which members of the fraternity reside. Among its members was Chicago native Earl B. Dickerson, who, in 1939, became the first African American to serve on the Chicago City Council; and Cleveland native Carl B. Stokes, who, in 1968, became the first African American to be elected mayor of a mayor United States city. Since 1965, the fraternity has sent 13 members to Congress, of which seven currently hold office. According to the North-American Interfraternity Conference, the fraternity ranks third amongst Greek–letter members in the 115th Congress, behind only Sigma Chi (three senators, eight representatives) and Sigma Alpha Epsilon (one senator, eight representatives).

The Kappa League on Capitol Hill Conference is modeled after the fraternity’s James “Biff” Carter Legislative Conference (aka Kappas on Capitol Hill), which brings together members of Kappa Alpha Psi on an annual basis to develop a legislative agenda and develop plans of action for engaging elected representatives. Some of the topics discussed include criminal justice reform, voting rights, civil rights, consumer finance policy, housing, and education funding. “I was elated to see dozens of Kappa Leaguers and fraternity members from Virginia, Maryland and New York at the conference,” said Congressman McEachin. “This phenomenal group of future leaders was comprised of young men who are already serving in our communities. I hope to see all of them and many more next year.”

The event started with welcome receptions in the offices of Representatives McEachin, Bishop, and Brown. Participants learned about the House member’s career path and received advise on the importance of personal conduct, college selection, and career planning. Said Myles Johnson, an eighth grader from John Edward Jeffries Moore Middle School in Disputanta, Virginia, “Everybody looks like they are in a hurry here. I guess there are some important things going on up here. I’m glad we got to come to experience this.” After the receptions, conference participants gathered on the steps of the US Capitol to take pictures and network with their counterparts from other chapters.

During a luncheon that followed in the Rayburn House Office Building, conference participants were introduced to congressional staffers and interns, who discussed their backgrounds and offered insights on working on Capitol Hill. Legislators were scheduled to address the group, but the program had to be amended to accommodate a vote on HR 4760, a hard-line immigration bill that was ultimately defeated. Donovan Riddick, a senior at Glen Island High School in Virginia, felt, “Proud to be a part of history.” Said Derrick Moody, a sophomore at Laurel High School in Prince Georges County, Maryland, “I never knew that you could intern on Capitol Hill. I mean to do something like that, you never know the connections you could make later on.” After Representative Hastings delivered closing remarks, participants were treated to a guided tour of the Capitol, where they learned the history of the building and its past members. Said Enosh Minney a rising freshman at Wilde Lake High School, in Columbia, Maryland, “I’ve seen the dome on the news but never knew all of this was inside.”

Youth development has been at the foundation of Kappa Alpha Psi’s national service program since 1922. The Kappa League was envisioned in the aftermath of the Watts Riots in 1965, when fraternity members from the alumni chapter in Los Angeles, California, established a formal mentorship program at Alain Leroy Locke High School. That after-school program supplemented the academic 10

curriculum with lessons on personal development, leadership, goal setting, career planning, and college preparedness. In August 1970, the mentorship initiative was adopted nationally by the fraternity. Today, more than 300 alumni chapters of the fraternity in 46 states and four countries operate a Kappa League program.

Said S. Isaiah Harvin, the Kappa League Coordinator in Columbia, Maryland, “I am grateful that we were able to expose some of our young men to the place from which this country is “ruled” as well as the history behind the [Capitol] building. I believe seeing the inside the place where history happens and having congressional representatives address the group gave Kappa Leaguers a meaningful perspective on decisions they will make for their futures. According to Scott Johnson, the Kappa League Coordinator in Petersburg, Virginia, “I am glad we were able to spearhead this event with Congressman McEachin in 2017 at the Virginia State University football game. Initially, this event was narrowly focused between Congressman McEachin’s office and the Kappa Leaguers in his hometown of Petersburg, Virginia. Once the program was extended to other representatives and other Kappa Leaguers, I felt it was going to grow into something life changing. Ultimately, I knew it would become instrumental for the fraternity as a whole.”

Alumni Chapter News Aberdeen (MD) Alumni Chapter ...Spotlight Brother Phillip B. Hunter a native of Selma, Alabama was born August 1947, and graduated from the R.B. Hudson High School in Selma, Ala. Upon graduating high school, Brother Hunter moved to East Elmhurst, New York. He worked at Swingline Stapler Machine Company in Long Island, NY, and Booth Memorial Hospital in Flushing, N.Y. for one year before matriculating at Tennessee State University 1966. Brother Hunter graduated TSU in 1970 majoring in Political Science. From 1970-1973 Brother Hunter attended the University of Kentucky Law School, Lexington, Ky with the assistance of the Herbert Lehman Scholarship and Earl Warren Scholarship (both awarded by the NAACP The Eastern Province Khronicle • Spring/Summer 2018 Edition • www.epkapsi.org

Legal Defense Fund).

While serving in the U.S. Navy, 973, Yeoman Seaman from 1974-77, Brother Hunter served as a military Lawyer, Captain, and Army Judge Advocate General Corp (JAGC). Brother Hunter was honorably discharged in 1977. From 1977-1981, Brother Hunter ran a private practice law firm. From 1983-2010 he served as a civilian Attorney with the U.S. Army Material Command (AMC) at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.

Brother Hunter retired from federal service in 2010, as a GS-15 Attorney -Advisor (Contracts).

Brother Hunter is the recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal (CGM). The CGM was awarded to the Foot Soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement in Selma, Alabama. They participated in the Marches from Selma to Montgomery, in 1965, for Black’s voters’ rights though out the state of Alabama who had been denied the right to vote by Governor Wallace, Sheriff Jim Clark, law enforcement and local White voter registrars.

Brother Hunter was tear gassed and brutalized on the Edmund Pettus Bridge along with hundreds of other marches. The first march was called “Bloody Sunday”.

President Obama signed the law awarding the CGM in 2015, in route to Selma to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March from Selma to Montgomery.

The marches were the catalysts for passage of the “Voter’s Rights Act of 1965” which was signed into law in 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Thousands of Black Folks thought-out the South were registered to vote subsequent to the bill’s passage and thousands of Blacks have been elected to offices since the Act was passed. See Public Law 114-5, 114th Congress.

Brother Hunter was also the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Alan Hillard Legum Civil Rights Award, January 12, 2018, and he’s a Kentucky Colonel, the commission of Kentucky Colonel is the highest title of honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky. It is a recognition of an individual’s noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding service to the community, state and nation. Brother Hunter is a Charter member of the Sargent Alfred B. Hilton memorial Fund. Sgt. Hilton was the only African American Medal of Honor winner from Harford County, Md., during the Civil War. He’s also one of founding members of Caucus of African American Leaders in Harford County, Md. This group advocates for equal and fair treatment of Blacks in all phases of government and life in Harford County.

Due to Brother Hunter’s impeccable accomplishments and experiences, he’s been invited as a guest speaker on numerus occasions throughout the state of Maryland to include Black History Programs at various schools in Baltimore City under the auspices of Dr. Carl Douthitt, and “March from Selma to Montgomery”, for Circuit Judge Herman Dawson of Prince Georges County, Md.

...Massie Academy Science Fair On March 15, 2018, Brothers from the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter served as judges in the Samuel P. Massie Academy Science Fair, Forestville, MD. The Chapter has had a longterm relationship with Massie Academy in providing support and mentoring to the students. Brother Keith Yancey, Chairperson for Massie Academy, Polemach Dexter Foreman, and Brothers Teddy Williams, and John Parham all served as judges. Along with selecting 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, the Chapter presented the winners with cash totaling $200. Brother Samuel P. Massie (1919-2005), the 25th Laurel Wreath recipient, was a member of 12

the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter for more than 50 years. The American Chemical Society named Brother Massie one of the 75 premier chemists of the 20th Century. In 2004, Prince George’s County, MD, dedicated Samuel P. Massie Academy in his honor. ...St. Jude Sunday of Hope On March 18, 2018, more than 15 Brothers and their Silhouettes, from the Annapolis (MD) Alumni Chapter hosted a Sunday of Hope fundraiser for St. Jude Hospital at Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church, Annapolis, MD. Brother Stephen Tillet is the Pastor and he and his congregation opened their doors to welcome the brothers and their Silhouettes. Following Sunday of Hope, Brothers and their Silhouettes met for brunch for fellowship. The Sunday of Hope event raised well over $400.

Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter ...2017 George L. Russell Charities and Awards Brunch On June 17, 2017, the Baltimore Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and its Philanthropic partner the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation of Metropolitan Baltimore welcomed the mentees of its Benchmark Kappa Youth Leadership Institute, Achievement Scholarship awardees and Community Leaders to the Annual George L. Russell Charities and Awards Brunch. The celebratory event gave community leaders the opportunity to be inspired by Dr. Willie May, Director Emeritus of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Dr. May, a 1966 initiate of the Knoxville College Chapter, the Beta Phi of Kappa Alpha Psi delivered the keynote that reemphasized the event’s theme, “Building your Legacy for the New Millennium”.

Twelve-Thousand dollars in scholarships were awarded to deserving high school seniors. The funds to support scholarships were donated

by Moet-Hennessy and the Baltimore Alumni Chapter Silhouettes. The event to commemorate the living legacy of George L. Russell, Jr. was held at the Morgan State University Student Center and was attended by 200 guests and well-wishers. A number of Kappa dignitaries and awardees were in attendance including Laurel Wreath Laureate George L. Russell, Jr., Guy L. Grant Awardee, Enyinna O. Anthony, National Director of Information Systems and Technology, Kevin Clark, National Medical Director – Liaison to the National Dental Association, Nathan Fletcher and Eastern Province Senior Province Vice Polemarch Charles A. Gilbert.

Each year, the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation of Metropolitan Baltimore proudly awards scholarships to deserving Baltimore area students.

University students Tahj Cox, 20, and Kristian Singh, 17, were presented the fraternity’s Charles Joynes Education Award.

And Jay-Quan Dill, 18, from Berkeley Institute, and Sekai Wainwright-Basden, 17, from CedarBridge Academy, won the Charles Daniels High School Achievement awards.

Michael Albouy, representing the fraternity, said it was a privilege to meet and assist with the young men.

Mr Albouy said: “This is certainly what this programme is all about, in terms of helping young men aspire to become the best they can become.

“I think it’s good that this award exemplifies the values we represent, the achievement and zeal for continuous learning.”

He added: “There were a number of factors, but it came down to not just grade point average but also their community service.

“We were looking for well-rounded young men, and these gentlemen exemplify that.”

Mr Cox, who is studying neuroscience and biology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, said he was thrilled to receive the award to help him with his education.

He said: “It feels good to get this award. I appreciate the confidence they have in me, and I’m happy they want to contribute to my future and in turn Bermuda’s future.

“It’s going to help provide funds for my education and help me to be the best I can be.”

Jay-Quan said the award has encouraged him to consider joining a fraternity as he begins his studies at Floridabased Nova Southeastern University.

He said: “I’m very honoured. As I transition to university I would like to join a fraternity, so this is a good stepping stone to see what a fraternity is like.

“I plan to go either into medicine of pharmaceutical studies, and I definitely want to come back to Bermuda.”

Krishna Singh, the father of Kristian Singh, thanked Kappa Alpha Psi on behalf of his son who was off-island.

Mr Singh said: “I would like to thank Kappa Alpha Phi, not just for the work you are doing in terms of money, but all of the things you do with community events.

“From my heart, I would like to say thank you for the entire country.”

...Learn 2 Live Initiative The Bowie/Mitchellville (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. hosted two Learn 2 Live forums on February 26, 2018 and February 27, 2018 at Fort Meade Senior High School, and Largo Senior High School. Over these two session we reached over 400 high school students.

Eastern Province Chapters Unite to Support Maryland’s Oldest HBCU! In an initiative spearheaded by Brother Ron Watson Jr. (Alpha Iota 85’ Fall) and Board Member of the Bowie State University Foundation, 3 Eastern Province Chapters united to establish the Kappa Alpha Endowed Scholarship Fund at Bowie State University. The ceremonial check was presented to Dr. Aminta Breaux during her Inauguration as the University’s 10th President, and first female President of Maryland’s oldest HBCU on April 12th, 2018.

This fund will provide scholarships to undergraduate students with a preference to members of Kappa Alpha Psi in perpetuity.

The Founding Donors consisted of the Bowie/Mitchellville, Upper Marlboro/Waldorf, and the Hyattsville/ Landover Chapters of Kappa Alpha Psi, and the individual Founding Donors; Dr. Sammy Miller, Charles Exum, and Ron Watson Jr. 16

The Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter On Saturday June 9, 2018, the Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter held its 17th annual Kappa Kookout.

The Kookout was held at the Blanks Club in Danville, VA with over 120 people in attendance.

The chapter also celebrated its 20 th anniversary and the hard work for the year, recognizing Brothers for the work they have done in different areas during the year. The Chapter recognized Brother Terry David for being named the new Executive Director of the Chapel Hill Training Outreach Project (CHTOP) in Chapel Hill, NC and outgoing Polemarch Keshon Kelly for leading the chapter for the past 5 years and for being re-elected Eastern Province Historian and being the Chief of Staff to the 28 th Eastern Province Polemarch Robert L. Jenkins, Esq., Brothers from neighboring chapters such as Martinsville (VA) Alumni, Greensboro (NC) Alumni and Ashville (NC) Alumni were present; members of the local Greek community also attended this event along with many family members and friends.

scholarships to our HBCU Scholarship fund recipients 18

for the 2018 year. Mr. Samuel Branch (George Washington High School) who will be attending Hampton University and Mr. Jaylan Fitzgerald (Dan River High School) who will be attending Norfolk State University. These are the 5 th and 6 th recipients of the Chapters HBCU scholarships. Brothers Edward Thomas, Ridge Williamson, Phillip Hayes and Polemarch Keshon Kelly head the chapters Scholarship fund committee. The Chapter Kookout was chaired by Brothers Mark Frazier and Ridge Williamson.

Brother Terry David – Professional Achievement Brother Terry David a spring 2006 initiate of the Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has been named the new Executive Director of the Chapel Hill Training Outreach Project (CHTOP) in Chapel Hill, NC. Chapel Hill Training Outreach Project (CHTOP) Established in 1969 by its founder Anne R. Sanford, the organization remains committed to its mission of providing high quality services to young children and their families. Currently, with approximately 230 employees, CHTOP operates Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Orange and Durham counties, North Carolina, the KidSCope program in Orange and Chatham counties; and national programs for respite care (ARCH) and for community-based programs for the prevention of child abuse and neglect (FRIENDS).

Brother David previously served as the Director of Head Start and Early Head Programs for CHTOP. Prior to joining CHTOP, Brother David served as Director of Head Start in Durham, North Carolina and Charlottesville, Virginia. Terry current serves as the President of the North Carolina Head Start Association, Board Member for Region IV Head Start association and was recently appointed by Governor Roy Cooper to serve on the Early Education Council for the State of North Carolina.

Brother David is a veteran of the United States Air Force where he served as an Intelligence Specialist. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration and Master’s of Social Work from the North Carolina Central University (NCCU), Durham

North Carolina. Brother David is passionate about providing high quality early childhood programming that will enhance the quality of life for children and families. He has been a financial and active member of the Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter since his initiation in the spring of 2006. He is passionate about the youth in our communities and is a great example of Guide Right and leadership for the children of our society.

The Danville (VA) Alumni Chapter Celebrates its 20th Anniversary On Saturday May 19, 2018, the chapter held its’ second annual Old School Kappa Kickback Party and Celebration of the chapter’s 20th Anniversary at the Pepsi Building by the Community Market on Craighead Street in Danville, VA. There were approximately 75 people in attendance, including brothers and their guests. The Province Junior Vice Polemarch, Tyleik Edmunds, gave greetings on behalf of the Eastern Province 28th Administration and the 28th Eastern Province Polemarch Robert L. Jenkins, Jr., Esq. Brothers and their guests fellowshipped, ate, drank, danced and enjoyed a refreshing and fun evening.

Brother George J. Durham, Jr., recognized the chapters 18 charter members; seven of which were present; Kirby Wright, William Flippen, Edward Thomas, Arnold Woody, Slyvesta Jennings, Bruce Craft and Polemarch Keshon Kelly. Brother Kirby Wright gave comments and remarks on the history of the chapter and its inception and growth since 1998. Polemarch Keshon Kelly greeted all Brothers and guest present. Brothers DeAndre Howard and Keshon Kelly presented chapter awards to the brothers that were chosen for awards for this fraternal year. Also the Chapter’s Lifetime Achievement Award was presented as we

do every five years in accordance with our chapter milestone years.

There were brothers that attended from neighboring chapters and members from the local pan Hellenic council that were also present. There was a display of chapter awards, achievements, accomplishments, and compliance requirements from the past 20 years set up along with a slide show of photos of the chapter from the past 20thyears.

Not only was the event successful but also made a profit that will be added to the chapter’s scholarship fund.

The College Park/SandySpring (MD) Alumni Chapter The Summer Blockbusters of College Park Sandy Spring 2018 College Park Sandy Spring (CPSS) Charter Day 2018 On May 19th 2018, the College Park Sandy Spring Chapter hosted their annual Chartering Day luncheon at The Hotel in College Park, Maryland. CPSS and the Kappa Community Development Foundation hosted the event to raise money for the Edgar Lee Chin memorial scholarship.

Vice Polemarch Reuben A. Shelton III Esq. as the keynote speaker. Members of the Eastern Province leadership including Eastern Province Polemarch Robert Jenkins Esq. and Eastern Province Senior Vice Polemarch Charles Gilbert were both in attendance for the luncheon.

The event celebrated 50 year members being honored by receiving their white Jackets along with being pinned during the 20

ceremony. The pinning ceremony included 50 year members not just from CPSS but from other chapters as well. The luncheon celebrated the great work and history of the chapter. It also celebrated individual awards to brothers that were presented. After the Luncheon, a reception was held for Brother Shelton that also included Ben Jealous who is a candidate for the Governor of Maryland. One of his most famous supporters Harold Lennix star of “The Blacklist” also stopped in with them. During the reception brother Maryland State Senator Anthony Muse also stopped in to fellowship with brothers as well.

Kappa Takeover II 2018 Kappa Takeover II hosted by the joint chapters of College Park Sandy Spring Alumni Chapter (MD), Bowie Mitchellville Alumni Chapter(MD), Fort Washington (MD) Alumni Chapter, and Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter was in full swing June 22nd and 23rd at the MGM National Harbor Hotel & Casino. Kappa Takeover II raised money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Prince George’s County Family Justice Center (standing up to domestic violence), and Guide Right programs. More than 2,800 people came out for the fundraising events. On June 22nd the All Black Party was held featuring a “Grown and Sexy” gala, with by performances by Spur of the Moment led by Brother Wayne Bruce and Grammy Nominated Performer Maysa. Joe Clair hosted the black event and performed himself that night as well.

On June 23rd the joint chapters hosted the second night of festivities with the All White Day Party from 5pm-9pm and The All White After Party from 10pm-2am. The All White Day

Party featured DJ Rod Madd Flava and Joe Clair as the host. The event had over 2,000 members in attendance in chic & classy white. After the conclusion of the All White Day Party, The All White After Party was held with Joe Clair entertaining the crowd with his renowned DJ skills and an amazing live band performance by Be’la Dona. The All White Day Party” and the All White After Party both sold out with over 2,000 people attend.

The Columbia (MD) Alumni Chapter (E) The Columbia (MD) Alumni Chapter (E) held its Kappa League Closing Ceremony Luncheon on Sunday, May 20th at the Hilton Garden Inn in Columbia, MD. Co-Chairs Rev. Dr. S. Isaiah Harvin and Keith Sykes hosted returning Kappa Leaguers, and 5 newly inducted mentees, along with family and friends. The keynote speaker for the luncheon was none other than our own 28th Eastern Province Polemarch Robert L. Jenkins, Jr., Esq. Province Polemarch Jenkins gave an inspiring speech on how determination and faith, and creating a clear path towards one’s goals, would lead these young men to personal success. He spoke on how his own personal journey growing up in South Carolina in a single parent home helped forge who he was to become, relying on the support system of his immediate family and his own inner strength and willingness to succeed.

The Chapter boasts of three mentees graduating high school and the Kappa Alpha Psi Scholarship Foundation of Columbia, Maryland, the Chapter’s philanthropic arm, bestowed each with scholarships towards their higher education. Howard Council Executive Dr. Calvin Ball (member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.) was also present to deliver words of encouragement and to provide each mentee with a signed proclamation from the County Executive’s Office.

The Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter FORT LEE (VA) Alumni Chapter (FLAC) March Guide right meeting On 22 March 2018, the Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter (FLAC) Guide Right Committee held a meeting in

Chester, Virginia. We opened the meeting with an ice breaker exercise. We grouped the young men in pairs, had them ask each other five questions, and tasked them to introduce each other to the group. During their presentation of one another, each spokesperson disclosed the answers that were different and those that were same. Next we facilitated information on the history of Guide Right and Kappa League. Brother Freeburn (FLAC Kappa League Coordinator) asked each young man to research: 1) their name; 2) what their name means and; 3) where their name came from. The young men will present their findings to Brother Freeburn at the next meeting. Finally, we had each young man identify one goal that they desired to complete in the next 90-days. As the written goals were read to the group, the brothers and Guide Right members assisted the young men in putting specificity to their goal. Finally, Polemarch Carl Brown presented a Certificate of Achievement to Elijah Burns (son of Guide Right Chairman Sam Burns) for his academic and athletic honors.

Polemarch Brown highlighted Elijah’s achievement and noted Elijah has only missed one Guide Right event in the past 5-years. He has been accepted and will attend the College of William and Mary as a student-athlete (football). Our next Guide Right event will take place at McGuire Veterans Hospital, where we will support the senior disabled veterans Also present were Brothers Billy McCain and Rolandus Branch.

Branding and Bonding “monthly social- bonding” On March 2, 2018, the Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter (FLAC) held its monthly social. The event was held at Roma’s Italian Restaurant in Petersburg, Virginia. This 22

particular social had a little different meaning as we had Brother Charles Haywood (Spr ’81) in attendance. This marked the first event he attended in over 16 months due to caring for his wife, who recently passed away. It was an absolute joy to see this Brother smile and laugh again. As we neared the end of the social, Brother Haywood asked to speak to the Brothers. He rose, provided a synopsis of his 65+ year relationship with his wife, and thanked Brothers for their support.

The speech was powerful. He spoke to the essence of what FLAC stands for…..bonding and brotherhood.

We also had the pleasure of having several Brothers from Petersburg Alumni Chapter (PAC) attend this event, to include the Polemarch (Jim Norman). This was a huge bonding event for both FLAC and PAC. As we continue to grow our organizations and find ways to collaborate, we know how important it is to build the relationship. This social was just another opportunity to do so. FLAC is confident that the future is bright for both organizations and that collaboration efforts will intensify. Special thanks to Brother Henry Hill (Social Actions Chairman) for coordinating another successful event.

“Silhouette Brunch “Love our silhouettes”

On March 3, 2018, the Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter (FLAC) held its annual Silhouette Brunch. The event was held at Anniebell’s Restaurant in Petersburg, Virginia. This marked the second year that we set a special day aside to salute our Silhouettes. Again, this event was very well attended. Among our guests was our most senior Silhouette (Catherine Brown, wife of Charter Member-Ollie Brown) and our newest Silhouette (Lisa Wilker). We were also blessed to

have a second Charter Member (Nathaniel Fleming and Silhouette Ruby Fleming) present. Polemarch Brown opened the event with a welcome, thanked the Silhouettes for their support and everything they do so the brothers are able to conduct the business of Kappa. Brother McCain provided the prayer prior to partaking in the meal. As we did last year, we enjoyed good conversation and great food that included eggs, bacon, sausage, chicken, waffles, grits, dinner rolls, mixed fruit, and assorted jellies. I believe the ladies truly enjoyed the brunch as we ensured all the focus remained on them. As we neared the end of the event, Polemarch Brown presented Silhouette Catherine Brown a Certificate of Appreciation for supporting Kappa and her husband for the past 64 years. Special thanks to Brother Henry Hill (Social Actions Chairman) for his coordinating efforts. And, a huge thank you to all the Brothers/Silhouettes for their attendance and continued support.

FORT LEE (VA) Alumni Chapter (FLAC) “Transition of leadership”

On 16 June 2018, the Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter (FLAC) conducted an Officer Installation Ceremony,

transferring the mantle of leadership from Polemarch Carl L. Brown to incoming Polemarch Samuel A. Burns. Brother David Lee (Delta Zeta, Spr 58) administered the Oath of Office. While serving as Polemarch from 2016-2018, Brother Brown’s leadership and accomplishments were groundbreaking and nothing short of spectacular.

Some of his accomplishments include Eastern Province Chapter of the Year, Eastern Province Leon Steward Award, publication in the Kappa Journal, collaboration with local chapters, and a host of community service support programs.

He and Silhouette Leona Brown increased Silhouette (national and Eastern Province) membership threefold (members at large). Past Polemarch Brown’s contributions to the fraternity and Eastern Province were not overlooked. He will now serve as

the Eastern Province Assistant Keeper of Records.

The hospital’s mission is designed to understand, treat, and defeat childhood cancer and other lifethreatening diseases.

Lynchburg (VA) Alumni Chapter This is a report of Chapter Highlights that summarizes the events for the Lynchburg (VA) Alumni chapter during the month of January 2018.

Herndon, VA with 11 young men from their program on April 14, 2018. The K-12 STEM Symposium was an exciting and all-day forum that engaged the young men coupled with corporate, government, academia and non-profit executives alike from the STEM fields. Linking science and mathematics taught in the classroom to impactful careers is an ongoing national challenge. This year’s Symposium helped the young men discover new and exciting possibilities in the STEM fields within the National Capital Region. The young men learned about computer coding, space, 3D printing, drones, connected cars and healthcare 24

On January 19-21, 2018, the Lynchburg (VA) Alumni Chapter hosted the 44th Annual Virginia Chapters Founder’s Day Celebration in collaboration with the Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL) Chapter, the Rho Kappa of Kappa Alpha Psi. All chapters charted within the state of Virginia came together in the City of Lynchburg, Virginia to celebrate our Fraternity’s Founders Day. The event kicked off with a Meet –n- Greet at Bootlegger’s Restaurant located in Downtown

Lynchburg. All Brothers were welcomed to attend to offer an opportunity to fellowship and meet other members of the various Greek organizations within the Lynchburg area.

Saturday’s events consisted of a Champagne brunch, the 44th VA Chapters Founders Day Banquet with guest speaker Wes Bellamy, with the finale being the VA Chapters Founders Day reception party. The weekend ended with a Sunday of Hope Service held at MyChurch located on Park Ave, in Lynchburg, VA. Lynchburg(VA) Alumni and Rho Kappa are thankful for all the support we received.

Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter - Kappa League Retreat Kappa League Phase 5 - Health Education During the weekend of April 21. 2018, the Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated hosted its 1st Annual Kappa League Retreat at Camp Pendleton State Military Reservation (SMR), Virginia Beach, VA. The focus of this event was centered on the 7 Phases of Kappa league, more specifically Phase 5 – Health Education. Total attendance for this event included 11 Kappa Leaguers and 9 Brothers.

On Saturday, April 21, 2018 Kappa Leaguers and brothers met and departed from Virginia State University’s Foster Hall and arrived at SMR on Saturday, April 21, 2018.

They were received by Brother Eric Johnson (PAC, Spr. 17) who chaired this event by providing forward logistical support and coordination. The Kappa Leaguers ate lunch and departed for MotorWorld to enjoy go-carting, a challenging Putt-Putt Golf Course with enjoyment at the amusement park. Later that evening, everyone enjoyed a cookout on the waterfront. Concurrently, Brother Mike Lee (Alpha Phi, Spr. 98) provided a class on Physical Fitness, and Brother Eric Johnson & Aditya Nepali provided a class on Sex Education. We finished the evening with everyone located in the barracks to receive a spiritual message and class on Health and Safety by Brother Gregory Baldwin (Alpha Phi, Spr. 88).

On Sunday, April 22, 2018 Kappa Leaguers and Brothers woke up early and moved over to the Camp Pendleton dining facility and classroom. While the Brothers were cooking the Kappa Leaguers received a class on Drugs and their classification.

After breakfast, the Kappa Leaguers enjoyed a competitive game of two-hand-touch football.

Thereafter, everyone enjoyed pizza for lunch, cleaned and cleared all buildings prior to departing back to Virginia State’s Foster Hall. The middle aged and high school kids in the program thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and all have said they would like to come back next year. Next year the Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter has aspirations of opening this event up to Region III and broaden the scope of the event and bring more attention to the overall work of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The PAC Polemarch – Brother Jim Norman – has a vested interest in the Petersburg Kappa League program and has made it a point to provide monitory and general support to the committee. Kappa Leaguers joined many other students around Montgomery County for the Annual Game Changer Conference held on 14 April 2018. This event was organized by the Unity Christian Fellowship, Inc. and the Mu Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Leaguers learned tie tying prior to attending the Game Changers event. The purpose of the event is to help young minority students build the confidence, competencies, and values they need to get to the next level and to become a “success story.”

The Silver Spring (MD) Alumni Chapter’s Guide Right Program, initiated three new members into the Kappa League Program. Chaired by Brother Chris Thompson, the SSA (MD) Alumni Chapter’s Guide Right Program meets weekly with the Kappa League members in efforts to foster the Fraternity’s commitment towards educational and occupational guidance of young men. The Kappa League members participate in numerous community service events across Montgomery County (MD) throughout the year, such as A Wider Circle and supplement their activities by organizing fundraisers.

Brother’s Keeper Event The Silver Spring (MD) Alumni (E) Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Guide Right Program took members of the Kappa League to the “My Brother’s Keeper” event held at Bowie State University. My Brother’s Keeper provides Straight Talk~ Sound Direction mentoring services to assist individuals dealing with the hardships of life by helping them live with Integrity, Respect and Standards.

A Wider Circle is a non-profit that provides basic need items to individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness, fleeing domestic abuse, or otherwise living without the essentials of life. SSA (MD) Chapter members, the Guide Right Program, and the MTA initiates volunteered their time to help with this initiative.

Virginia Military Institue Februrary 23-24 2018 10 Students from NOVA competed in the Commonwealth Cyber Fusion is an invitationonly event for Virginia community colleges and universities that are National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Security. Students participate in cyber challenges, learn from industry professionals, network, and attend a cyber job fair. Administrators from these programs mentor their students, network with industry, and attend faculty roundtable sessions. The goal is to foster the next generation of cybersecurity professionals in Virginia. This event is co-hosted by Senator Mark R. Warner and Governor Ralph Northam. and event hosted by the Governor of Virginia. The competition consisted of 13 Virginia colleges and universities. NOVA placed 7th out of 13 schools. Mike Hancock, AllCyber Executive Director, was one of two coaches for the team.

Watson, Maryland House of Delegates Candidate Vietnam Veterans Memorial 35th Anniversary of the Wall

The Men of the Upper Marlboro-Waldorf Alumni Chapter participated in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial 35th Anniversary of the Wall. More than 58,000 names are inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The chapter participated in the Reading of the Names, which took place at The Wall for 65 hours over a four-day period. Participants read the names for 19 hours daily on November 8, 9, and 10.

Lunch with 5th Graders @ Samuel Mudd Elementary Brothers from the Upper Marlboro/ Waldorf (MD) Alumni chapter ate lunch with the 5th grade male students at Samuel Mudd Elementary School in Waldorf MD on April 25, 2018. This opportunity allowed group mentoring and engagement to motivate the children to stay vested in there education.

UM/W Inaugural Fishing Excursion 2017 The UM/W Chapter set out to do something that no other chapter in the Eastern Province, let alone NPHC, was doing this fraternal year; resulting in a dual Fishing Excursion & Greek Fishing Competition.

Though the fundraiser was entitled “Bottom Fishing for the Big Ones,” the underlying objective was also the “Battle for the 30

Bay” whereby Divine 9 and Masonic members and teams could compete for the 2017 Trophy. It was a hard fought event by the talented members of Kappa Alpha Psi, however the winning fish count from Team Omega Psi Phi won the inaugural experience. It was by and large a phenomenal event that all attendees look forward to in 2018.

UM/W Alumni Chapter Feed the Homeless with Arnold’s House The UM/W Chapter proceeded this fraternal year in a new direction by not only celebrating there 33rd year of existence as a chartered chapter but also chose to coincide there celebration with community philanthropy. The chapter collected school supplies and canned food goods from the chapter and community at large who attended the events and are seen here providing a donation to 501c3 “The Arnolds House” located in Waldorf Maryland. Arnold’s house feeds homeless and children who are not provided consistent meals in the counties surrounding elementary, middle and high schools. UM/W is overjoyed to champion efforts to combat and be at the ready to feed the homeless and those without meals to eat.

Employee of the Month: Donovan Robinson April 13, 2018 Posted in: Awards/ Kudos/EOM, Inside Story Touching the lives of those in at-risk and underserved communities is the goal of Employee of the Month Donovan Robinson, senior public health advisor in CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD).

Originally from Jackson, MS, Robinson always had a desire to go into a career in health. In high school, he volunteered for mental health agencies and health education projects in the Chicago area, which included the University of Illinois at Chicago and Illinois Institute of Technology. “Even though I’m from Jackson, Mississippi, we have a lot of family in Chicago so, it was like a second home,” said Robinson.

He continued to volunteer for public health projects during his first three years of undergrad at Tuskegee University where he majored in biology with a minor in psychology.

The public health projects he participated in during his high school and college years sparked his desire to work with at-risk communities. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, Robinson continued his education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to earn his master’s in public health.

After that, his career began at the Boston Public Health Commission. On a daily basis, Robinson

taught health education in schools and jails. Then, he moved on to start a new job with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), Division of Immunization, Varicella Active Surveillance Project, a cooperative agreement funded by CDC. The project monitored post-vaccine epidemiology of chickenpox and zoster disease. He outreached to about 600 sites including health care providers, hospitals, schools, daycares, colleges, student health centers, pain centers, and jails.

Robinson became interested in learning more about CDC while at the Philadelphia Department of Health, where he received valuable information and support from James Lutz, CDC public health advisor, assigned to the Philadelphia Immunization Program.

From there, Robinson transitioned to a new career with CDC in field-assignments at immunization programs in Washington, DC (2006) and the Virginia Department of Health (2009).

Today, the senior public health advisor works in the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH)’s Immunization Program. He supervises three public health associates and two public health advisors, and works closely with CDPH’s Commissioner’s Office, medical director, program manager, public information officer, and others to collaborate on the influenza vaccination program, Vaccinate Illinois Week.

“Our Vaccinate Illinois Week campaign is a statewide initiative that educates the public on the importance of late influenza vaccination and coincides with CDC’s National Influenza Vaccination Week,” said Robinson.

Partners for this event include Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Ever Thrive Illinois, Blue Cross Blue Shield IL, National Influenza Disparities Project, and pharmaceutical companies.

Robinson also assists in helping CDPH sponsor its First Responder Influenza Initiative (a four-day event held annually during National Preparedness Month).

During this event, CDPH teams up with the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) and Walgreens to vaccinate CFD staff and other first responders. Last year, 1,240 vaccines were administered. Robinson also works on a collaborative adult campaign with Blue Cross Blue Shield to provide adult vaccinations at 11 high-risk city sites, including correctional facilities, drug treatment centers, and homeless shelters.

In 2015, Chicago had an outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease among men who have sex with men. Robinson began working with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ)

communities to organize immunization clinics throughout the city. He sometimes went door to door to deliver vaccines to highcapacity areas. Over 21,000 meningococcal vaccines were administered.

On March 17th, the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter (WAC) Guide Right Committee took the Guide Right Kappa Leaguers out to attend DC Youth Law Day at DC Superior Court. This was WAC 5th consecutive year and this year’s topic was Rally vs. Riots. The scenario presented to the participants was a Rally that turned into a Riot and whether the Rally organizers should be held responsible for any destructions. The Kappa Leaguers role played as 32

Judge, Attorney, Witness, Defendant and Juror. They also received a tour of the cellblock. They also broke out in their bad new KL Hoodies and represented WAC well. Organizers of the event were impressed. !

On March 17th, the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter (WAC) Community Service Committee, led by Brother John Cotton and supported by our MTA Candidates, helped with the Ward 5 voter registration drive at the Brentwood Shopping Plaza. Brothers Gordon A. Fletcher and Anthony Bigsby also attended and assisted in the success of this endeavor; knowing how important it is to vote. We Are Washington!

On March 24th, the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter Community Service Committee participated with a community service effort with their 6 MTA candidates during the Cluster Weekend.

The 6 MTA candidates donated water, sports drinks, fruit cups and other perishable items to the U4C Victory Ministry which distributes food to the homeless children of Fredericksburg, VA as a part of their mission during the MTA Cluster on Saturday. The Community Service Committee chairman, John Cotten, assisted by helping them load the vehicles with the items as they continued their journey into Kappa Land.

On March 25th, at the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Membership Training Academy (MTA) Cluster, six (6) new MTA Candidates were initiated into our great bond of fraternity.

On April 5th – 8th, the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter (WAC) played a role in yet another very successful Eastern Province Council Meeting in Norfolk Virginia.

First and foremost, Province Polemarch Robert L. Jenkins Jr. Esq. did another masterful job of orchestrating one of the best Province Council meetings held in a long time. The business meetings were productive and on time, and his State of the Province Report had to have been one of the most well written and delivered such reports, far outpacing nearly every similar report I have read or heard at past Grand Chapter Meetings. Kudos to Brother Jenkins for leading our Eastern Province from uncertainty and disarray, to stability and fiscal strength. He was also unanimously recommended by the Council, and supported wholeheartedly by Grand Board Member Ron Julun on behalf of Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles, Jr., to be sworn in by him for another term as our Eastern Province Polemarch. It was a wonderful scene.

Robe’rt L. Palmer Jr. had a Homecoming ’17 unlike anyone else. The onetime G.S.C. running back returned to his former field of glory to represent the 2,000 or more alumni attending and the tens of 35

thousands more who did not make it this year.

Palmer, who earned his degree in Business Administration/Management Information Systems, returned for Homecoming as he has almost every year since graduating. But this year he did it as Alumni Ambassador and served as Grand Marshal in the Homecoming parade.

For nearly 30 years, he’s been an information technology professional for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), a career that’s taken him to the inner sanctum of the Pentagon where, at one point, he worked directly for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“The last time I was on the field I was playing for Glassboro State,” he said. “But at Homecoming, at the grand age of 52, I found myself back there, standing astute and proudly looking into the stands of family and friends. Returning to my alma mater was a highlight of my collegiate and professional and personal career.”

Polemarch and Silhouette Brown held a breakfast for the 50-year Kappas and their Silhouettes Brothers D. Lee (Mrs. Pat Lee) and Brother Nathaniel Fleming (Mrs. Ruby Fleming) were in attendance. We enjoyed a meal prepared by Silhouette Brown. We also enjoyed good conversation and a few laughs. Overall, we had a relaxing morning. As we continue to salute our 50 Year/Senior Kappas, it is little things like this that keeps them motivated. We have to continue to place focus on our senior brothers.

March 2, 2018 While the chapter held its monthly social, Polemarch picked up Brother Haywood (Senior Kappa) and brought him to the event. This particular social had a little different meaning as we had Brother Charles Haywood (Spr ’81) in attendance. This marked the first event he has attended in over 16 months due to 38

March 3, 2018 On March 3, 2018, the Fort Lee (VA) Alumni Chapter (FLAC) held its annual Silhouette Brunch. The event was held at Anniebell’s Restaurant in Petersburg, Virginia. This marked the second year that we set a special day aside to salute our Silhouettes. Again, this event was very well attended. Among our guests, we had two charter members (Ollie Brown and Nathaniel Fleming) attend. Polemarch Brown opened the event with a welcome, thanked the Silhouettes for their support and everything they do so the brothers are able to conduct the business of Kappa. As we did last year, we enjoyed good conversation and great food that included eggs, bacon, sausage, chicken, waffles, grits, dinner rolls, mixed fruit, and

assorted jellies. I believe the ladies truly enjoyed the brunch as we ensured all the focus remained on them. As we neared the end of the event, Polemarch Brown presented Silhouette Catherine Brown a Certificate of Appreciation for supporting Kappa and her husband for the past 64 years.

Petersburg Alumni January 29, 2018: Members of the Senior Kappa Committee made the regular pick-up of donated food from a local market (Aldi’s) for delivery to the Petersburg HOPE Center Food Pantry. On this date, a full pick-up truck load (approximately 350 pounds) of produce, baked good and meats, were delivered to the food pantry. Through the Senior Kappa Committee, the Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter participates with several other faith-based, civic organizations and socially conscious individuals in a well-established, long serving program of providing fresh food and cooked meals to those members of the Petersburg Community in need. This commitment to service on the part of the Senior Kappa Committee is ongoing.

Although several chapters failed to provide a quarterly report, I am aware that some chapters conducted a breakfast meeting or luncheon for their Seniors during this quarter.

Also, we are the leading Province in contributions to the Grand Chapter Senior Kappa Endowment Fund.

After nearly two years of fundraising through golf tournaments hosted by the Provinces, there was need to elevate our support of the Memphis-based hospital that is the leading pediatric research facility in the world. The new program, Sunday of Hope (SOH) was intended for local chapters and its members to partner with area churches to raise one “Love Offering” per year.

Brothers, Kindly accept this communication as Sunday of Hope kicks off again in the Eastern Province for the St. Jude’s fiscal year 2018. We are currently leading all provinces with donations over $38,000. I want to personally thank each brother and every chapter for their contributions and efforts. As we have gotten geared up, the Gaithersburg-Rockville (MD) Alumni, and the Virginia State University Chapter, the Alpha Phi of Kappa Alpha Psi are leading all chapters. Again, thanks for an amazing kickoff.
