Because of you, it’s been a one-in-a-million year. Make that 1 in 10 million! Around here we live for happy adoption stories, and how shelter pets rescued you as much as you saved them. In the Spring of 2022, I enjoyed an incredibly moving moment when I got to share a special surprise with the De La Rosa family of Texas. Their sweet husky, “Balto” was the 10 millionth adoption at a PetSmart Charities® National Adoption Week event. And they continue to report he’s brought so much joy to their family. In total 392,339 pets in need found loving homes through our in-store adoptions program this year. That’s a lot of happy tails wagging on rides home!

While connecting pets and people through adoption remains a top priority, it’s often a first step. Research revealed that more than 50 million pets in the US lack access to veterinary care. Equipping pet parents in need to keep their pets healthy and in those homes where they’re loved helps ensure far fewer land in shelters. That’s why in 2022 we announced a new strategic direction. With a renewed focus on addressing barriers to veterinary care, alleviating pet hunger and supporting disaster response, making life better for both pets and people became our clarion call.

With an updated look and feel to engage others to the cause, we also celebrated another significant milestone. Together, we passed $500 million in grant funding, and the impact is nothing short of staggering. We’re proud of the contributions we’ve made to improving animal welfare for nearly three decades.

It’s more than a tagline, it’s our purpose. At PetSmart Charities we believe pets contribute to a healthier, happier and more connected society– uniting us through the power of unconditional love.

From our start in 1994 our mission has grown to mirror the needs of the communities we serve, with pets at the heart of everything we do. Today, we are proud to be the leading funder of animal welfare in North America.

Connecting Pets & People

Everyone deserves the love of a pet. That’s why we partner with more than 2,500 animal welfare organizations across the country who are dedicated to find loving homes for pets in need. From transport grants that move pets from overcrowded shelters into communities with capacity, to flexible adoption rewards that support adoption events in-store, the key to ending pet homelessness is making pet adoption accessible to all and connecting prospective pet parents to the incredible animals awaiting adoption.

Supporting Pets & People

We are dedicated to keeping pets and families together by improving access to veterinary care, fighting pet hunger and ensuring people and pets remain united during natural disasters - because we know in challenging times, people and pets need each other more than ever.

Our Access to Care grants help ensure wellness resources are accessible and affordable to all families. Our Pet Hunger programs recognize that food insecurity affects pets, too. We work with organizations that distribute nutritious pet food like Feeding America and Meals on Wheels America - because we believe pets are part of the family, no matter how hard it is to make ends meet. Together with our partner the American Red Cross, we are integrating pets into human disaster response efforts. And we support animal welfare partners to provide the rescue, shelter and support needed during these emergency situations.

Healthy and Together Denver, CO

Finch, rescued from a dog fighting operation, had injuries needing care. His owner, unable to find affordable resources, considered surrendering him. Our grants enabled partners at Dumb Friends League to provide essential services, keeping Josie and Finch united.

Hurricane Ian Relief Florida

Full Bellies, Full Hearts Falls Church, VA

Joyce, a Senior Services of Alexandria client (a Meals on Wheels America member), relies on special food for her pup Mystie. With minimal income, affording it was a challenge. Thanks to your support, Joyce and Mystie now have peace of mind, knowing their next meal is covered. Your generosity made a difference.

Adoptions Took Flight New Orleans, LA

Together with Bissel Pet Foundation, Companion Animal Alliance, and Race for Life Rescue, we onboarded 66 pets on a flight from Virginia to Louisiana. This transport effort was the first stop on a journey toward a better chance at adoption.

We responded to Hurricane Ian with a $150K commitment to partners, ensuring aid for pets and their families in need. Your support played a vital role in enabling swift relief efforts upon impact. Together, we brought hope and assistance.

MEET BALTO: OUR 10 MILLIONTH ADOPTED PET

Connecting pets and people lies at the heart of our mission. Pet adoption provides homes for animals in need and brings joy and companionship to their human counterparts—much like the bond formed between Balto and the De La Rosa family. While running errands, Vanessa De La Rosa and her family stumbled upon PetSmart Charities® National Adoption Week event. They hadn’t planned on adopting a pet, but they decided to “just look” at the puppies. While Vanessa explored, her husband Ezri bonded with a shy Husky mix who had been neglected and suffered wounds from being chained up. Our partner, Harlingen Humane, provided the pup with much-needed veterinary care to get him ready for adoption. Ezri couldn’t resist and took the sweet Husky for a walk. The dog quickly won over their son Noah, and the family knew it was the beginning of a better life for Balto.

Supporting Pets & People EMANCIPET GRAND OPENING

At PetSmart Charities®, we address the barriers that prevent pet owners from obtaining basic healthcare for their beloved companions. Our commitment to funding access to care is rooted in the understanding that affordable and accessible veterinary services are vital for pets’ well-being and overall quality of life. And keeping pets healthy is critical to ensuring pets stay together with their beloved families. In a much-awaited development, the doors of the brand-new Emancipet clinic swung open on April 13, 2022, within the PetSmart store in Houston, TX. After weathering the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in 2017, this resilient region began seeing an increased demand for affordable veterinary clinics. Aware of the pressing issue surrounding access to quality veterinary care, we partnered with Emancipet and empowered their organization with resources that enabled them to serve their community’s needs.

FEEDING AMERICA PARTNERSHIP

As part of our commitment to fighting pet hunger across the country, we’re improving access to pet food by partnering with human service agencies that embrace serving pets as part of the family. We believe that no pet should go hungry and access to nutritious food is fundamental to a pet’s health and happiness. Together with Feeding America, we harnessed the power of collaboration to ensure that ensure clients of partner food banks have access to pet food, too. In 2022, PetSmart Charities celebrated the launch of our one-of-a-kind branded food bags created exclusively for distribution to Feeding America’s network of food banks—like Feeding Tampa Bay, whose food bank received a tractor-trailer full of pet food, so that their community members in need won’t have to decide between feeding themselves or their furry friends. Our commitment of $11M resulted in 120 million nutritious pet meals distributed across the United States.

AMERICAN RED CROSS PARTNERSHIP

Seventy six percent of pet owners say they would not evacuate if their pets couldn’t come with them—yet only a small percentage of emergency relief shelters are pet friendly. That’s why, in 2022, PetSmart Charities® and the American Red Cross embarked on a partnership to support pets as essential family members during times of disaster. Our partnership consists of a multi-year grant commitment of $2.25M over the span of 3 years. This collaboration provides the opportunity for the Red Cross to develop programs and initiatives that are inclusive of all family members—including pets—during disasters.

Thanks to our partnership with PetSmart we celebrated the huge milestone - 10 million adoptions in store! What an amazing accomplishment that would not have been possible without the support of PetSmart. When PetSmart was founded, it made a decision to never sell cats and dogs and instead made a commitment to help find them forever homes through adoption. That’s how PetSmart Charities® was born. Each year, PetSmart helps provide critical support needed for PetSmart Charities to be able to advance our mission. From hosting pet adoptions at over 1,500 PetSmart stores to giving us space to collect donations at the register checkout, our friends at PetSmart stand by their motto: Anything for Pets™. In addition to providing this ongoing support, PetSmart drives seasonal promotions to help further our work in local communities, including donating a portion of sales from the Chance & Friends collection of plush toys; allowing customers to convert Treats® loyalty rewards to donations, and extending their support through PetSmart’s network of vendor partners.
