ANNUAL REPORT 2022

FOR PETS. FOR PEOPLE. for good.

Dear Friend,

Because of you, 2022 was a year of change, hope, and positive impact for pets.

We began the year by announcing a new strategic direction. Much success had been achieved in finding homes for adoptable pets. But research revealed that roughly 50% of dogs and cats in Canada do not have an ongoing relationship with a vet and lack access to veterinary care, so we committed more resources to keeping pets healthy and at home with their families. With an updated look and feel to engage others to the cause, we also celebrated a significant milestone. Together, we passed $25 million in grant funding, because of your generosity.

Many of you have shared stories of adopting pets at PetSmart Charities of Canada® in-store adoption events. And, how they rescued you as much as you rescued them. In 2022, we continued to support our animal welfare partners by providing them with nearly $400,000 in funding to support adoptions in PetSmart stores. In total, 18,242 pets in need found loving homes through in-store adoptions in partnership with animal welfare partners this year. Wow. That’s a lot of nose boops and tails wagging during happy rides home!

While connecting pets and people through adoption remains a top priority, it’s often a first step. Equipping pet parents in need to keep their pets healthy and in those homes where they are loved contributes to fewer pets finding their ways to shelters. With a renewed focus on addressing barriers to veterinary care, and supporting disaster response, we’re working to make life better for both pets and people. None of it is possible without you. Together we’re making a significant impact on the lives of pets and the people who love them. Thank you for your generous support — For Pets. For People. For Good.

With gratitude,

For pets. For people. For good.

It’s more than a tagline, it’s our purpose. PetSmart Charities of Canada™ believes pets contribute to a healthier, happier and more connected society – uniting us through the power of unconditional love.

From our start in 1999 our mission has grown to mirror the needs of the communities we serve, with pets at the heart of everything we do. Today, we are proud to be the leading funder of animal welfare in Canada.

OUR MISSION

We make the world a better place for pets by investing in community partners that advocate and care for the well-being of pets and all who love them.

Our Vision

A world where communities unite in support of pets together with their families.

Our Programs

OUR INVESTMENT IN STRATEGIC GRANTS AND PARTNERSHIPS CREATE POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE LIVES OF PETS, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES.

Connecting Pets & People

Everyone deserves the love of a pet. That’s why we partner with more than 140 animal welfare organizations across the country who are dedicated to find loving homes for pets in need. From transport grants that move pets from overcrowded shelters into communities with capacity, to flexible adoption rewards that support adoption events in-store, the key to ending pet homelessness is making pet adoption accessible to all and connecting prospective pet parents to the incredible animals awaiting adoption.

Supporting Pets & People

We are dedicated to keeping pets and families together by improving access to veterinary care, fighting pet hunger and ensuring people and pets remain united during natural disasters — because we know in challenging times, people and pets need each other more than ever.

Our Disaster Response program ensures that people and pets get the assistance they need during natural disasters and recovery efforts. When disaster strikes, we quickly mobilize to support our animal welfare partners, so pets and their families get the shelter, care and supplies they need during natural disasters

Hurricane Fiona

Prince Edward Island

Spike Goes Home

Victoria, British Columbia

Spike was confined to a 6-foot-chain for most of his 12-year life, until Victoria Humane Society stepped in to help. In desperate need of medical care, our grant funding helped Spike recover from an embedded collar and other medical needs before he went home to a caring, patient family.

Healthy Pets, Full Hearts

Northern Alberta

Accessing veterinary care can be difficult for remote Northern communities. With the support of grant funding, Canadian Animal Task Force helped over 880 dogs and nearly 600 cats in First Nations communities receive the care they needed.

Healthy and Together

Hamilton, Ontario

When Gambit’s family discovered a tumor on his leg, they tried to find him the help he needed. His owner, unable to find veterinary care, was afraid the only solution was to consider end of life options. Our grants enabled East Village Animal Hospital to provide Gambit with the surgery he needed, and keeping him together with his family.

$55,000 in Hurricane Fiona

Disaster Response funding helped the PEI Humane Society provide aid for pets and families in need. Your support helped 25 dogs, 35 cats, 30 rabbits, 12 guinea pigs and 2 other pets receive food, veterinary care and other services in the wake of the storm.

Connecting Pets & People

BERT FINDS A HAPPY HOME AT PETSMART

Connecting pets and people lies at the heart of our mission. Pet adoption provides homes for animals in need and brings immeasurable joy and companionship to their human counterparts— much like the bond formed between Bert and his adoptive mom, Kershaw. When Kershaw saw Bert’s photo on the Cat Therapy and Rescue Society (CTRS) Facebook page, she fell in love with his face. She had adopted an 8-year-old cat from CTRS two years prior and had been looking for a small dog companion since their cat preferred the company of small dogs. Cat Therapy and Rescue Society has seen such a great need, they have been helping pets other than cats, including dogs like Bert, and other small pets. Adoption was always important to Kershaw, even before she began working at PetSmart as a Store Leader. “We always planned on having a dog someday but was never sure when the time would be right until we saw Bert,” says Kershaw. Bert soon went home and celebrated with a new name – Gerry. Now Gerry is living a life full of love with his cat sibling and family.

Supporting Pets & People

HELPING MOLLY RECEIVE VETERINARY CARE

Molly’s pet parents could tell their five-year-old fluffy white pup wasn’t feeling herself. She was tired and not eating well, so they brought her to a veterinarian. A radiograph revealed she had bladder stones and a urinary tract infection, and she required urgent surgery. When faced with the unexpected cost of the surgery, Molly’s pet parents turned to Toronto Humane Society for help. Thanks to a $75,000 grant to help improve access to veterinary care, Molly received the care she needed at a cost her family could afford. After a scary week of complications and additional treatment, Molly was finally on the mend and returned to being the bouncy, happy pup she always was.

HELPING PETS WEATHER THE STORM

When Hurricane Fiona hit Atlantic Canada in the fall of 2022, the Nova Scotia SPCA sprang into action to keep 300 pets in their care safe, while also offering support to pet parents in their community. Three of their shelter locations were damaged and needed urgent intervention, and staff had to work by flashlight to care for pets when power was lost. Thanks to the rapid support of a Disaster Response grant, the Nova Scotia SPCA team could purchase replacement medicine, supplies, generators and fuel to keep their shelter running. They also helped families in the community feed their pets with a pet food pantry, and took in pets whose families were displaced by the storm. Disaster Response grants are just one of the ways PetSmart Charities of Canada helps pets in need and all who love them.
