ANNUAL REPORT 2021

FOR PETS. FOR PEOPLE. for good.

Dear Friend,

The year 2021 was of contrasts as the world navigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. But as always, pets deliver a special comfort. Your generous support of PetSmart Charities® made an indelible impact on both ends of the leash this year.

Together, we helped more than 400,000 pets find loving homes through our adoption program. With a $10 million multi-year commitment to alleviating pet food insecurity through a partnership with Feeding America, more than 17 million pounds of donated pet food was distributed to partner food banks and human service organizations. And in the wake of natural disasters, including Hurricane Ida, we granted more than $37.5 million to rehabilitate, reunite and rehome pets — and that made an impact on their people.

The research we conducted explored the current state of affairs in animal welfare, and there was much to celebrate! Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in saving more pets through adoption. But there is still much work to be done to keep those pets and their families together — happy and healthy. Our team rolled up their sleeves and began to look ahead at 2022, devising a new strategy for an even greater impact. We look forward to sharing more with you next year.

None of this would have been possible without you. Thanks to your generosity, we can continue to support more pets who will bring love and comfort to their people for years to come.

IMPACT IN ACTION

Santa Barbara, CA

Santa Barbara Humane was selected to receive $25,000 toward a public veterinary clinic for pets in need. The $25,000 grant from PetSmart Charities has helped Santa Barbara Humane address these issues by subsidizing veterinary care to pets in Santa Barbara County.

Louisiana/Gulf Coast

We supported Hurricane Ida relief efforts with $1 million in grant funding to Louisiana SPCA, Louisiana Search and Rescue Team, Mississippi Animal Rescue Team and adoption partners in impacted areas. Funds provided essential care for pets in need and their families.

Oak Park, MI

Many times, when this nation talks about hunger, pets aren’t part of the conversation. In collaboration with Forgotten Harvest and Michigan Humane Society, we provided 17 truckloads and more than 630,000 pounds of pet food to families in need.

Toledo, OH

“There

low-income

pets and

good care for them,” says Stephen Heaven, President/ CEO of Toledo Humane Society. Together we supported the opening of a new veterinary clinic to serve a community that lacks access to affordable care.

Adoptions

A tiny Chihuahua was found covered in spines from a run-in with a cholla cactus. The Arizona Humane Society, a PetSmart Charities® partner, aptly named him Cholla Charlie and provided him with medical care.

Medically cleared and happy as can be, little Charlie was put up for adoption at a PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center. Within just a few hours, he found his new forever family.

Whether it’s through our Everyday Adoptions Centers, National Adoption Week events, or our online search tool, we help homeless pets find loving homes through partnerships with nearly 2,700 nonprofit and governmental rescues and shelters.

Charlie is just one of the more than 400,000 pets adopted in 2021 thanks to the generosity of donors across the country.

07

Access to Care

It’s a staggering number — 50 million beloved pets across the country don’t receive veterinary care.

We believe all pets deserve to live long, happy lives in the arms of those who love them. Sadly, lack of affordable veterinary care risks the bond between pets and their families. The primary obstacle for pet parents seeking care is finances. But financial barriers are only one obstacle; transportation, language, and location also pose a challenge for pet owners seeking veterinary assistance for their pets.

PetSmart Charities® partner SISCA for Adoptions and Wellness Care in Toledo, OH is making veterinary care for pets and their families affordable and accessible. By hosting free clinics for pet parents, they provide preventative care — including vaccinations and wellness checks.

“We always say pet ownership is not a right of the wealthy, everyone benefits from having pets,” said Jessie Sullivan, Director of Adoptions and Alternative Services.

08

PET Food Insecurity

According to Feeding America, 1 out of 6 people in America experience food insecurity.

We know many pet parents, especially seniors, will fill their pets’ food bowl before their own. At PetSmart Charities®, we believe no pet parent should be faced with that choice.

We’re helping improve access to free pet food by partnering with Feeding America, their member food banks and human service agencies that serve pets, too. River Valley Regional Food Bank in Fort Smith, AR is just one of many partners that meet this need. In just one day, they distributed over 32,000 pounds of pet food to families in need.

09

Influencing Communities

PETSMART CHARITIES ® IS PROUD TO PARTNER WITH ORGANIZATIONS THAT CREATE POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE LIVES OF PETS AND PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM.

We invested over $1 million to help launch Pets Eat Too (PET), a pilot program to ensure pet parents can get the support they need. The partnership between United Way 211, DoorDash and PetSmart Charities helped provide 3,600 pet food deliveries across the country.

According to Feeding America, 1 in 6 Americans faced food insecurity in 2021. When people struggle to feed themselves, they may also face challenges feeding their pets. Beginning in 2021 we committed $10 million to combat pet food insecurity through an ongoing partnership with Feeding America.

In 2021, PetSmart Charities awarded $1 million to Meals on Wheels America as part of a $3 million commitment to establish or expand pet assistance services for senior pet parents. This partnership helps homebound seniors by providing them with access to pet food and health and wellness services for their pets.
