DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF BEARDED DRAGONS There are many different kinds of lizards found around the world today. One of particular interest is the species called the bearded dragons. There are about seven different species found in this category.

The features found on bearded dragons set them apart from many of the others. The most unique feature of the species is the row of spine like scales that extend from the throat. These create the appearance of a beard and so the term bearded dragon.

While they may have a somewhat mean looking appearance, they are actually very friendly towards people. Because of this the species is often the one that is chosen to keep as a household pet.

The natural living environment for this creature is rocky areas found in the desert or somewhat warm and damp areas of certain woodland areas. Bearded dragons are considered omnivores which mean they eat mainly fruits and berries.

The one member of the seven different types that are most often found being kept for pets are the Pogona vitticeps species. This is more commonly known as the inland bearded dragon. This dragon lives for a period of ten to twenty years.

At maturity they will reach up to 22 inches in length and weigh up to 600 grams.

The distinguishing scales of the beard found at the throat can be expanded when they feel threatened and resemble almost a body armor like look. In addition these lizards have the ability to change colors to blend in with their surroundings, making it very easy for them to hide.

There are certain things that one should not feed to bearded dragons so if you plan to keep one as a pet you will want to pay special attention to this. While they love to eat things such as worms, crickets and things of that nature, you should never catch these things in nature to feed to your lizard. Because of the risk of exposure to pesticides and other toxins, you may make the bearded dragon very ill.

When preparing the home for your new pet your best efforts should be put into creating an environment that is very close to their natural habitat. Dry and rocky or slightly damp and very warm are the two best conditions for the dragon. You will want to make sure you provide a heat source for the bearded dragon also since they tend to prefer very warm temperatures that are uncomfortable for most humans.
