Congress to be held annually The organizers of World Heavy Oil Congress are excited to announce the annualization of the event. The news was officially announced at the 2015 Launch Party, which was hosted by the City of Edmonton on March 6, 2014 at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans. Since 2006, the Congress has gathered the most relevant players in the international heavy oil community every 18 months to share knowledge and expertise, and to build valuable relationships. By shifting to an annual cycle, World Heavy Oil Congress will provide even more opportunities to fulfill the industry’s needs. In its seventh edition, World Heavy Oil Congress will be held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada at the Shaw Conference Centre, March 24-26, 2015. Edmonton previously played host to World Heavy Oil Congress in 2008 and in 2011.

As major projects are adding energy to North America’s oil and gas industry, Edmonton continues to be a business and production hub for the sector. The city, now more than ever, is living up to its old reputation as the oil capital of Canada. Edmonton’s supply and service industry brings Alberta’s massive oil, gas and oil sands reserves to market.

newsletter Modularization Driving Layout of Facilities: Applied Innovation in Integrated EPFC EPFC & 3rd Gen Modular ExecutionSM Fluor is delivering cost and execution certainty to clients globally through a totally integrated engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction (EPFC) solution using 3rd Gen Modular Execution. This innovative proprietary approach to modularization drives the layout of facilities and significantly reduces the overall cost. During the early and detailed design phases, utilizing this approach substantially reduces quantities and field work by optimizing the process block including equipment, piping, electrical and control systems. The capability to fully modularize large scale industrial facilities with minimal assembly at site improves safety, productivity, predictability and allows for an enhanced facility footprint by achieving significant plot size reduction. The ability to “plug and play” at site by relocating up to 90% of the field hours to a module yard, plus the easy fit up of 3rd Gen Modular Execution modules continues to impress. A snapshot of a recent project is the efficiency of a small team (peaked at 16) in executing five heavy lifts and set in place 100+ metric tons of steel, two pumps, two water coolers, two vessels, 1km pipe complete with 10,000+ diameter inches of welding, 1,500m cable, 3,000m tracers, heat tracing and control panels, lights, insulation, and 100+ soft covers, all within a two-week window. 3rd Gen Modular Execution is well-aligned with the demand for more standardization and replication of facilities combined with modules. The approach is attractive, for example to SAGD projects, where phased growth has become the norm. Projects are planned in stages to maximize capital efficiency. With 3rd Gen Modular Execution, once the first investment is successfully running, clients can essentially install replicas for succeeding phases.
