THE RELATIONSHIPS

Dr. Steven Chu welcomes delegates to World Heavy Oil Congress 2014 Dear Distinguished Ministers, Ambassadors, Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is an honor and privilege for me to be attending the World Heavy Oil Congress 2014, held on the 5-7 March in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States of America. As global conventional energy resources continue to deplete, the oil and gas industry is increasingly turning to heavy oil production as a driver of economic growth. Until recently, it was thought heavy oil was exclusive to large fields in Canada, Venezuela and the United States, but now, prospects are quickly opening up in Brazil, Mexico, China, the Middle East, Russia and elsewhere. Additionally, rapidly changing advances in technology and technical innovation are changing the face of the heavy oil industry and making it a unique, relevant and very important tool to meet global energy demand. In addition to the rising demand for oil, there are also serious risks of climate change that we cannot ignore. This Congress also provides an opportunity for industry leaders to discuss the challenges of the rising demand and need for carbon mitigation. World Heavy Oil Congress is the global gathering place for the heavy oil industry, a unique meeting place for 1000 key decisions makers and professionals involved in the heavy oil process. Join us for both the business conference where industry heavyweights will be discussing how to drive the industry forward from a commercial standpoint and the technical conference where some of the leading experts in technology and innovation will be showcasing research and development, and key success stories powering the production of heavy oil. In addition, our exhibition and social events provide a unique opportunity to do business, explore the latest benchmarks, and network with your colleagues and counterparts from across the world. See you in Louisiana!

newsletter Deepen your knowledge Add a short course to your registration! Gain even more insights on the heavy oil sector by registering for one of the Short Courses offered on Tuesday, March 4. These specialized courses offer a comprehensive expertise to advance the knowledge base of World Heavy Oil Congress delegates. Hear from leading experts from the international heavy oil community sharing the latest information on advancements and opportunities in the industry. $795 USD | Registration fee also includes: light breakfast, lunch, and access to all three days of the exhibition

Course 1: Challenges Facing the Heavy Oil Industry With the rapid increase in Asian economics in the last decade, the global oil demand has significantly increased that brought pressure for greater production of hydrocarbon energy sources. At the same time, the traditional conventional natural gas and crude oil reserves declining and energy companies are turning to “unconventional” resources to meet the demand. Alberta oil sands have become the focal point of the future energy source for the entire world.

Course 2: An Introduction to the Canadian Oil Sands In order to stay abreast of the state of the art in technology development in the Canadian oil sands industry, some historical perspective is required. Often the debate around both economic and environmentally sustainable development of this resource is informed by the popular press, the industry or government response to articles in the popular press. Read more.

Course 3: Improving Thermal and Non Thermal Heavy Oil Production with Coinjection of Gases The purpose of this course is to summarize methods to improve recovery of deep heavy oil. A significant fraction of the world’s heavy oil resources are found between 1,000 feet and 10,000 feet deep or are in reservoirs such as; wet-fluvial deposits, lower permeability sands and fractured reservoirs or in remote or offshore locations where traditional steam injection is difficult or not economic. There are at least six trillion barrels of resources that are like these. Read more.
