EpoxyFlooringSystems
Epoxy floor coatings are commonly used in domestic, commercial and industrial floor applications. Epoxy coatings are normally applied over concrete floors to provide a high-performance, smooth, and durable surface that can last many years and withstand heavy loads. Many industrial sites, warehouses, and commercial buildings rely on epoxy floors to maintain clean and safe conditions for workers, equipment, and inventory.
ApplicationsinSriLanka
Sri Lanka has made significant development in the design and construction sector during the last 10 years. The use of epoxy as a primary flooring system has been gaining in popularity in the country for its durability and ease of application. The technicality of application is the primary barrier for epoxy applications, however Sri Lanka is rapidly gaining the knowledge and experince in this field.
AdvantagesofEpoxyFloorCoatings
Offers a hard-wearing durable surface. Able to withstand heavy and continuous traffic.
Durable and easy to clean. Dustless. Jointless. Chemical resistant.

EpoxyFlooringApplication
Application of certain epoxy floor coatings can be quite simple and economical. A person with DIY skills could carry out these applications. However, when a seamless high-specification finish is required, it is best to always seek professional assistance. Epoxy floor systems will need professional guidance and we always recommend an industry professional. Petrokem provides registred sub contractors when requested as a value added service.
Method of application: (Methods mentioned below are subjective and may vary according to different surfaces)
1. Surface inspection - Prior to surface preparation, a thorough inspection of the floor must be conducted. Inspection should determine the existing type of floor, water table, age of floor and profile. All these factors determine the successful application of epoxy flooring systems.
2. Surface preparation - Surface preparation is critical in order to ensure adhesion between the epoxy system and the substrate. Suitable methods are chemical cleaning, sanding and diamond-grinding. Any surfaces that have been contaminated with oils may also require thorough chemical cleaning.
PAGE 5
3. Vacuum cleaning of the floor - Use an industrial vacuum to remove dust particles. The floor must be dry and free from all foreign matter for best performance.
4. Prime the floor with an epoxy primer. Priming will provide the floor a longer life and better adhesion to the substrate. Furthermore it will seal the substrate thus eliminating the risk of air bubbles. Priming also helps reduce the amount of product that will be required in the later stages. Ensure that the areas of application are well ventilated. It is recommended to coat two layers of primer in order to properly seal the floor. Use a proper electrical mixer to mix the resin and hardener components together.
5. Fill all the cracks, pot holes with epoxy grout/epoxy repair compound. For thin cracks, it may be necessary to create a V groove with a diamond cutter in order to improve the anchoring of the grout/epoxy repair compound.
PAGE 6
6. Application of the first coat of epoxy paint. Empty all the contents of the hardener into the resin component. Use an electrical mixer and mix at least for 5 minutes. This is the most critical step in any successful epoxy flooring application.
8. Apply a third coat if required.
7. Apply the product with a roller/brush/spray. Use good quality equipment for the application. Repair the floor with epoxy putty/epoxy repair compound if required. Re-coat after 24 hours.

RisingDampness
Rising dampness in buildings may be defined as the upwards flow of moisture through a permeable wall/floor structure, the moisture being derived from groundwater. The moisture rises through the pores (capillaries) in the masonry by a process loosely termed ‘capillarity’, which causes the masonry to act like a wick.
Epoxy flooring systems are NOT recommended to be applied over floors that are not protected against rising dampness. There will be significant bubbling up and peeling off occurring in any epoxy flooring system applied over a floor with rising dampness.

Surface Conditions
Caution : If the surfaces are not prepared properly the product will not perform properly.
Mixing Ratio
Mixing Time
Application
Surface to be treated should be cleaned using suitable equipment (and with a suitable solvent if necessary) to remove all loose material, grease, oil and all other foreign matter. Surfaces to be treated should be clean, dry and free from all foreign matter. Roughen metal or smooth glossy surfaces. Do not touch surfaces after cleaning. If Application is on concrete or cement plaster the surface should be cured for 28 days. I.e. the concrete surface or cement plaster should be older than 28 days prior to the epoxy application.
Caution : If the specified resin and hardener mixing ratio is not maintained, the product will only partially dry or not dry at all. In certain instances, the product may dry but without its full strength or performance.
Specified mixing ratios must be observed as exactly as possible. Adding more or less hardener will not result in faster or slower drying. Drying time will depend only on temperature.
It is impossible to correct the situation if the product is partially dried. Only possibility is to remove the partially dried epoxy mixture mechanically which will be very difficult and time consuming. Therefore correct mixing ratio is extremely important.
Caution : If resin and hardener are not mixed properly, the product will only partially dry or not dry at all. In certain instances, the product may dry but without its full strength or performance.
It is impossible to correct the situation if the product is partially dried. Only possibility is to remove the partially dried epoxy mixture mechanically which will be very difficult and time consuming. Therefore correct mixing time is extremely important.
Mix thoroughly specified amounts (By volume or weight) of resin and hardener. Five minutes of thorough mixing (for long pot life systems) and 2 minutes of thorough mixing (for very short pot life systems) is recommended. Use a flat bladed ladle/knife or mechanical stirrer for mixing. Pay special attention to the walls and the bottom of the mixing container. The material of the walls and bottom should be scraped using suitable ladle and mix with the rest of the mixture. In the case of 3 component systems, mix thoroughly Resin and hardener components initially and then add the third component and mix thoroughly.
Caution : The product will harden inside the container if not applied during the specified time period. Mixed quantity should be used immediately, and complete the application within the specified time period. The pot life will be substantially shortened if larger quantities are mixed. PAGE 14
The Technical Paints Inspection (TPI) procedure is a technical and sales based quality check provided for customers that request it. The inspection is based on the order placed and will be sampled from the exact batch of material provided to the customer. This procedure is set forth to minimise any product defects that may arise due to improper handling and surface preparation on site by commissioned contractors/companies/labourers.
For proper utilisation of all Petrokem products, please adhere strictly to the user guides and technical data sheets.
The samples will be collected and trialed in front of the authorised officer of the concerned party. Petrokem does not reimburse the material trialed. Please note TPI can only be requested for orders over 50 litres of any given technical paint.
The procedure is as follows :
Please request a TPI (technical paints inspection) prior to collection. TPI can only be possible from our factories located at Kalutara, Katubedda or Kahatuduwa. (Prior confirmation of the location will be available once the order is made)
Customer is encouraged to bring two samples of the substrate to be trialed. However, If not possible, Petrokem will be providing the sample panels to be trialed on.
There will be two panels that will be trialed on for each product. Both panels will be signed by the Petrokem officer and the officer from the concerned party. One panel will be handed to the concerned party and one panel kept at Petrokem. (Job card reference will be added)
The sampled material will be obtained from the customers batch of material. The customer can request which can/tin/tube (out of the batch) should be tested.
Since product drying times vary, the concerned party is requested to carefully monitor the trialed panel for 24 hours. If there re any issues in terms of any of the panels trialed on, the concerned party is requested to immediately notify Petrokem.
