KNOWN AS ONE OF THE MOST SCENIC DRIVING ROUTES IN MICHIGAN, THE TUNNEL OF TREES IS A WINDING NARROW ROAD THAT TWISTS AND TURNS ATOP BLUFFS ALONG LAKE MICHIGAN ON HIGHWAY M-119 (LAKE SHORE DRIVE). ITS NAME COMES FROM THE BEAUTIFUL CANOPIES OF TREES THAT COVER THE ROAD.

Along the way, read the markers for points of historical significance and be sure to visit local businesses like OTIS Harbor Springs Fireplace Lounge, Trillium Woods Coffee, Pond Hill Farm, and unique seasonal shops in Good Hart and Cross Village.

Depart Harbor Springs north on M-119 towards Cross Village for about 20 miles

Once in Cross Village, continue on M-119, turning left on Lake Shore Drive to Lakeview Road at Sturgeon Bay

Continue on Lakeview, which becomes Gill Road

On Gill Road, go three miles to Pleasantview Road (C-81)

Turn right to continue south on Pleasantview Road to M-119

Turn right on M-119 to return to Harbor Springs

Driving Directions

Depart Boyne City north on Lake Street, which becomes Boyne City-Charlevoix Road

35 MILES

After about 15 miles, turn left at US-31 for about one mile

Turn right on Mercer Road and continue to the last street (Cedar Street)

Take a left at the end, then another left on Pearl Avenue, which becomes Mount McSauba Road

Continue on Mount McSauba Road and turn right at the stop sign, returning to US-31

Continue on US-31 straight into town

Continue through downtown Charlevoix and turn left onto M-66

After about five miles, turn left onto Ferry Road towards the Ironton ferry

Board the Ironton car ferry (nominal fee, cash only)

Continue straight along Ferry Road to Boyne City

JORDAN RIVER VALLEY TOUR

Driving Directions

Depart Boyne Falls west along M-75 one mile to Deer Lake Road (C-48) and turn left

After about four miles, turn left on East JordanBoyne City Road (C-48), going into East Jordan

Turn left at M-66

Turn left on Alba Road

Take a left at the junction of US-131

Continue five miles to the Dead Man’s Hill turnoff and go left Backtrack to US-131, turn left, and return to Boyne Falls

Depart Bay Harbor, turning right onto US-31 South towards Charlevoix

As you get into Charlevoix, continue south on US-31 through town

After 12 miles, turn left on Atwood Road (C-48)

Continue five miles and turn left on Church Road, then left again at the next stop, staying on C-48

In East Jordan, turn left on M-66

Stay on M-66 to US-31

A right on US-31 takes you back through Charlevoix and north to Bay Harbor

Depart Petoskey east on Mitchell Street (C-58), winding along the route for 22 miles to Wolverine

Take a right at the stop light onto South Straits Highway, continue for seven miles to Thumb Lake Road (C-48)

Take a right on Thumb Lake Road (C-48) towards US-131

At US-131, go left to Boyne Falls

Take a quick right on M-75 to Boyne City

Follow the signs, staying on M-75, to continue north through Walloon Lake Village to US-131

Turn left and return to Petoskey
