Welcome... Hello and welcome to Memorial Park for another ‘Super Saturday’. Today we host the Western Suburbs Central League and the Wainuiomata Premier League teams who will both be very tough opposition - a timely reminder that there are no easy games for our teams in either league this year. The 1st team have produced a mixed bag so far but are more than capable of competing with the best teams in the league – the first two games proved that. If we can reproduce those performances on a more regular basis then we can push for a top four finish. We are at our best moving the ball quickly and have a talented (and mostly home-grown) squad who work hard for each other. But we must keep our discipline, our structure and put our chances away if we want three points. Mark will have the squad well drilled and I know they are keen to get back to winning ways, so the best of luck lads. The Reserves have suffered four narrow defeats in five games but have deserved something from at least a couple of those matches. These are tough losses to take but it does highlight that one or two lapses can and will cost points in this league. I’m confident though that good results are not too far away, so keep working hard lads and I’m sure the points will come. Green Bottle Day is next weekend and Old Timers Day is coming up at the end of June. Mark these dates in your diary, book your late night passes and organise a taxi home. These are good social events and give all of us the opportunity to have a couple of quiet beers and catch up with old friends and players from a few years ago – the stories usually get bigger and better as the day unfolds! Good luck to all Petone teams this weekend and a special reminder to shout loud for the mighty Liverpool who take on Chelsea in Sunday’s F.A. Cup Final. We haven’t had much to shout about in the last 20 years so let’s make the most of it! Remember to play hard but play fair and don’t forget to support our sponsors! The Visitors: Western Suburbs Thanks to Matt Snaddon & Barry Smith
The club was established in 1906 as Hospital AFC, as a recreational outlet for staff at the Porirua Mental Hospital.It reached the Chatham Cup semi-finals in 1926, and then won the Cup in 1935, beating Christchurch’s Western 2-0. The club name changed to Western Suburbs in 1956, reflecting the growth of Porirua and Tawa. WESTS: Back then… The club won the Central League First Division title in 1968 and 1969. It qualified for the first season of the National League in1970, and performed well in the Chatham Cup, losing the 1970 final, after a replay, to Blockhouse Bay. 1971 CHATHAM CUP FINAL Western Suburbs made up for the disappointment of that loss by beating local rivals Wellington City 3-2, after extra-time, in the 1971 Final. Following this the club’s name was changed to Porirua United, reflecting Porirua’s new City status. PORIRUA UNITED As Porirua United, the club enjoyed initial success, winning the Central League title in 1974 and going close in 1975 and 1978. At the end of the 1983 season Porirua United and Viard amalgamated to become Porirua Viard United. PORIRUA VIARD UNITED Porirua Viard United proved to be a competitive force in both men’s and women’s soccer.At the end of the 1992 season, Porirua Viard United amalgamated with Mana United, forming Western Suburbs. WESTS: Now… Western Suburbs won the Central League in1996 and 1998. It then won the inaugural Capital Federation Premier League in 2000, and again in 2002. 2005 saw the return of a Central League. Again Western Suburbs became champions. 2006, the centenary year of the club, was a special one, with a penalty shootout victory over Eastern Suburbs to win its 3rd Chatham Cup. Since then a couple more Central League titles and a number of coaching changes have signalled a new era for Wests Football, one in which Lloyd O’Keefe and the 1st Team Squad will strive to carry on the successful legacy of a proud Club.

Womens’ Football Building on the foundations of the 2011 season, Petone women’s football has started the 2012 season much stronger. With a new women’s committee tasked with improving the football experience for all existing and new players to Petone, we have focused on offering a good quality experience for all players, regardless of their skill level, in a fun, supportive family type environment. We are lucky to have secured Strike Entertainment as a sponsor for the women’s teams and we wish to acknowledge Dion Leslie (General Manager at Strike) for making this happen. We encourage club members to come down and join us for free bowling upstairs on the last Friday of each month! This season we have worked hard for our three women’s teams, ensuring we have a good supportive structure in place in terms of coaches, team management, player numbers, transparent team selection, upgraded equipment and an increased sense of being valued within the club. This season, many women’s games will be played on artificial turf, which creates a few challenges in terms of offering visiting teams the “Petone” experience, so during the season we will be focusing not only on achieving results on the playing field but also maintaining that Petone hospitality that we are so famous for… Like most teams, we thrive on support and our women’s teams could always do with a few more cheerleaders – so if you ever find yourself with some spare time on a Sunday, check and see - we could be playing at a park near you! The Visitors: Wainuiomata The Wainuiomata Association Football Club was established in 1959 and was a foundation member of the Wellington Central League. Wainui has six men’s teams and two women’s teams, and eighteen youth teams. The senior men’s team plays in the Capital Premier League. The club have two members who have achieved over 300 first team league appearances. They are Willy Ward and Ralph Chenery. Notable former players who have represented New Zealand are: Malcolm Dunford, John Enoka, Rudi Feitsma, Dave Houghton and Grant Turner The club celebrated its 50th Jubilee in 2009 over Easter weekend. Past players/members came from all around the world to celebrate this event. The countries included Holland, England and Australia. Wainui’s most memorable moment was in 1995 when the men’s first team made it into Central League. More recent achievements are the men’s first team being promoted to Premier two years ago where they are still competing, and our women’s first team having managed, in just 2 years, to go from Division 4 to Division 1. The club has also reached the quarterfinals of the Chatham Cup on two occasions. Editor’s Footnotes: Wainuiomata were in the original Central League Div. I in 1968, and again in 1970 and 1971. They achieved Div. I status again from 1989 to 1991, Central Premier from 1992-95, and Superclub in 1996. Petone first team coach, Mark Foster, made 208 appearances for the Wainuiomata first team.

Life Member: Tony Hilton Tony Hilton joined the club in 1952 and played as goalkeeper for the junior 6th (under 12) team. Tony’s uncle Otto was at that time on the club’s management committee, and his father, Arthur, also joined that committee in 1954. Tony played junior football for 4 years and later also filled in for lower grade men’s teams while he was at college. But, like his father and uncle, it was as an administrator that Tony was to make his mark with the club. His career as a budding football journalist, and later as a racing journalist, put paid to any prospects of continuing to play. His administrative involvement started when he was elected onto the Management Committee in 1962, and he subsequently served as Secretary in 1966 and 1968. In 1968 and 1969 he was nominated by the club, and duly elected, to the committee of the Wellington Football Association. Tony’s career then took him to Christchurch for some years. He re-emerged at the club in 1981 and agreed to take on the important role as Chairman of the Junior Management Committee, to stabilise and lead a club-focussed administration. After three years in that role, Tony was again elected as club Secretary in 1984. The nature of the secretary’s role changed in that year when the club became the first in Wellington to appoint a paid full time manager. Tony continued in the Secretary role through to 1989, had a short break, and was then co-opted onto the management committee for the 1991 season. He was then elected each year from 1992 until he stepped down in November 1998. Tony liked to be in the thick of things, in positions of considerable responsibility at difficult times, and attending to difficult situations. Helping on the football sub-committee and chairing the Junior Management Committee were examples, but nothing surpassed his delight at supporting the 1st team and offering his views on their performance. In addition, Tony was very proud of having written a centennial book for the NZ Football Association – ‘An Association with Soccer’, published in 1991. Tony was awarded life membership at the 1998 Annual General Meeting in recognition of his contribution, the third member of his family to be so honoured. Sadly though, he passed away soon after, far too young. Tony’s family presented to the club a Golden Boot Trophy, awarded in Tony’s memory each year to the Club’s top goalscorer. John Bradbury
