Grant Plumbing Petone Match Programme - Saturday 11th May

Petone

vs Victoria University 2.00pm

Welcome... Today we welcome Victoria University to Memorial Park for our Chatham Cup 1st round clash. The Cup is still the premier winter competition in New Zealand and still an attraction for many players. It has been a while since we had a good cup run and it would be great to get into the national stage of the competition to test ourselves against top sides from other regions. However, we first need to get past the early rounds and today won’t be an easy game at all. Our visitors had a comfortable 3-0 victory over our 2nd team last week and played very well. They will provide a difficult challenge today and, with the added incentive of claiming a Central League scalp, we are expecting another good performance from them. Cup football brings the best out of most teams and generally throws up a few upsets so, as well as we’ve played in the past two weeks, we’ll need to be on our game again to avoid an early exit. Thanks to everyone who supported our Old Timers’ Day last Saturday. The Clubrooms were full for most of the afternoon and the entertainment later in the evening capped off a great day. It was a pleasure to see tankards presented to five former players among those who achieved 100 or more 1st team league games many years ago. This was made possible by the thorough research completed by John Bradbury during the recent Honours Board project. He was able to ascertain that Alan Kearton, John Ryan, Bob Walley, Tony Evans, John Rook and Jack Shaw had played 100 games, (in some cases well over 100) when including matches before the Central League commenced in 1968. An engraved tankard was presented to each player except Tony Evans, who will receive his on another occasion, as has been the tradition for this achievement since 1976. Good luck to all Petone teams this weekend. Play hard but play fair. Go the Blues! Craig Deadman Chairman, Petone Football Club

Snippets: Petone vs Victoria University The first match between the top teams of the clubs was in Wellington Division Two. It was played on 30 June 1945 at Petone Rec and won by Petone 2 – 1. **** In 1946, both clubs were in Division One but at the end of that year, such was the effect of the war and rehabilitation on player losses that Petone was forced to withdraw from senior competition for the following three seasons. **** It wasn’t until 1953 that Petone again met University, in Wellington Division One A, and were beaten 4 – 0 by a team that boasted several name-players of the day. **** The first time the two clubs met in the Chatham Cup competition was on 11 June 1955 at the Basin Reserve, and on this occasion University thrashed us by 7 goals to 1! **** University was a very strong team in the 1950s and indeed they won Division One and the Venus Shield in 1956. As with other top teams, University used to be featured often at the Basin Reserve and help to generate gatetaking revenue for the Wellington Football Association. It wasn’t until some years later that the home and away system was introduced. **** The last time the clubs met in a Chatham Cup match was on 4 May1968 at Evans Bay, with the by then lower graded University winning 2 – 1. **** After that, the only time the two clubs’ top teams have met was in 2005 when Capital Premier was the top competition. Petone won both games comfortably in finishing second, while University held up the table.
