Welcome... Hi and welcome to Memorial Park for another double header Saturday. Unfortunately the recent poor weather and subsequent lack of work means the pitch isn’t in great shape so let’s hope for a fine weekend. The more things change, the more they stay the same! Yes we’re still on #1 and yes we’re still waiting for a confirmed start date for the artificial installation. All the relevant contracts are still with FIFA so we wait with much anticipation. Goal line technology only took five years to be approved so who knows... Old Timers’ Day was a great success and I’d particularly like to thank Steve Minogue and everyone else who helped with the planning and organisation of the event. It was great to see the clubrooms full and plenty of old faces enjoying a beer, to hear the tall stories, and to enjoy the entertainment later in the evening. The Armanis are celebrating their 10th year this season and with a few rounds to go, are still pushing for a top two finish. No pressure fellas but another promotion before you all head to Masters’ footie would be brilliant! Congratulations on the achievement. I look forward to the dinner. A great result for the 1st’, Reserves and 3rd teams last week. Well done lads especially for Sambo, Rob and the Reserve team. Our visitors: Tawa FC Tawa AFC was founded in 1971, with two senior teams and approximately 200 junior players. Since then the senior side of the club has grown to 12 teams, including 2 ladies’ teams, and the junior part of the club to over 350 players. In addition to this, Tawa has a close relationship with Tawa College, which has 7 teams competing in the College Sport Competition. The senior teams cater for players residing from Mana through to Wellington. The junior part of the club was inundated with players from outside the area a few years ago and, as a result, zoning has been introduced for new players as the club could not handle the numbers. The club has its main playing ground and also its clubrooms at Redwood Park. The training facility, since 1992, has been Tawa Primary School, which the club floodlit because the Tawa Council was unable to provide a training ground. In 2005, the floodlighting of Grenada North Park was completed and this will primarily be used as a senior training ground, leaving the school ground for junior training. Tawa had a golden spell in the Chatham Cup competition during the 1990s, reaching the semi-finals once and quarter- finals twice. From 2005, the Tawa first team was runner up in the Capital Premier League three times before winning in 2009 and being promoted to the Central League. With an average age in the early 20s the team has an excellent future. The club provides playing facilities for serious, semi-serious, social and masters’ players and welcomes new members in any of these categories. As with most clubs, Tawa is always on the lookout for coaches, managers or people who have an interest in football and wish to get involved in some manner.

Football Stars... ... Grow your own or pick the cherries. For many years now, Petone have been known as a club which develops its own talented players and then gives them an opportunity to perform at higher levels. Long before the Whole of Football (WOF) approach, the club was running school holiday coaching courses and specialised group coaching for the more elite players. I am pleased to say that this continues through until today with the WOF programme, which has been successfully launched and used as an example to other clubs this year. Unfortunately, Capital Football’s decision to take players away from a club environment and into the school system now prevents a child joining the club and being given the opportunity to progress through to the first team and further, in the environment in which they have grown up. The coaching of coaches has always been a factor in the Petone Club’s structure, with coaches being encouraged to seek qualifications and further their skills. As players step out of junior football they have the incentive to achieve selection in the under 19 programme. The cost of taking the Under 19 team to Napier’s National Youth Tournament is in the proximity of $12,000 per year, but this investment in youth has paid for itself over the years as our home grown lads stay on with the club to contribute at the top for several years. Look at the first team and reserve teams that take the field today – they are full of players who have taken the internal route through the Petone junior structure. So then we look at club loyalty. Sure, some of these players could have crossed the river, or travelled into town to play elsewhere but the value of the development system at Petone shows through and players stay (something that is appreciated by club members, but that should never be taken for granted). As those loyal players reach the end of their careers, there is an inclination to continue their involvement, either as a coach or administrator, Whether it is turning up to train on good facilities or walking into the clubrooms after a game, players get that second home feeling. A friendly family atmosphere. Tawa, our first team’s opposition today, have a similar CLUB environment. Real clubs!

Want to kick things off by saying Old Timers’ day a couple of weeks back was awesome. The weather was about as good as the price of Broccoli (2.70 each? Not on my watch). But boy the people turned up! The club was heaving. Every time I turned around there was more beer being brought up from downstairs. Putting the recycling out after that would have taken yonks. Great to see so many familiar faces and everyone having such a good time. As rubbish as the weather was I thought the game v Wairarapa was pretty decent. Jono Blair’s diving header goal almost made me explode. That was the goal of the season quite frankly. I have had the pleasure of playing Indoor football with Jono. It’s a fabulous experience and one all New Zealanders should do before they die. It’s like the Indoor court is a chess board and he is the grandmaster. I also went to watch Petone last week beat Wests 2-1. They won with a bit of an iffy penalty but look here, Petone was easily the better team. That’s not Sam Boyd biased chitter chatter - that’s straight up like a zipper on a pair of chinos. Benn Dawson was named MOTM and I have to agree. I know me and him go back a few haircuts but he was like a hairy Luka Modric out there pulling the strings. Started by former Petone legend and All White Andy Barron, it’s a site made up of recent footballing stories and jabs at its leading figures. I have a couple of things on there so if you like what you see let me know. I like positive re-enforcement. Petone have Tawa today and will be hoping to keep this little unbeaten run going. I’m going to miss it due to work commitments, so if someone can fly up to Auckland after the game and let me know how we got on that would be awesome. You will likely find me at a blackjack table in Sky City. Work related? Totally. Go the Blues!

Life Member: Graham Hickling Graham joined club in 1958 as an8 year old. He played in a team of boys who were coached by Dick Whittington right through until moving into senior football in 1967. Graham was selected in Hutt Valley under 14 and 16 age group teams. He went on to play mainly second team football, although he did make five Central League appearances. In later years Graham played mainly in the Pet Shop Boys social team, but his playing days were cut short by a knee injury. Graham started coaching as a 17 year old in 1967, taking a team from under 7year olds until they moved into senior football. This team won 3 championship titles and produced six 1st team players with over 500 1st team appearances among them, three National League players, two New Zealand age group representatives, and one All White. He took the team on a couple of end of season trips for up to a week and also helped out with a combined team, which travelled to Australia. In 1967, Graham also joined the Junior Management Committee (JMC), following in his father’s footsteps. He remained on the JMC until the end of the 1973 season. He helped out in the annual bottle drives, distributing flyers, collecting the bottles from properties, and then sorting them the next day. Until 1970, Graham cycled everywhere: whether it was to senior training twice a week, coaching juniors once or twice a week (with a bag of balls on the bike), to meetings, or (as results officer) ferrying the club’s result sheet to the Hutt Valley FA secretary in Naenae each week for 3 years. From the mid-1970s, Graham also coached two other teams. One of these was for 3 years, starting off as 13year olds. Four of this team went on to play a combined 300 games for the 1st team and two went on to play for New Zealand. He was also manager of our 1979 Junior National Cup winning team, which included several players from the teams he had coached. Graham was elected onto the Management Committee for the first time in 1975, and the following year was elected club captain, a position he held through to the 1978 season. He was well-suited to this role as he moved easily among players and officials alike. In 1976, the Management Committee contracted Graham to build the clubrooms inside the gymnasium. He was involved with the planning, drawings, and then construction. Graham’s skills were invaluable in building this “2nd stage” of our facilities, and he achieved this on weekends and at night, while continuing to play and coach.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Graham was responsible for organising working bees and undertaking a lot of improvements and maintenance around the clubrooms, in contrast to the lack of willingness to help out that to a large extent characterises the scene today. One of the largest working bee projects was replacing the cladding on the high level exterior of the gym - a project that lasted a month. Another project in which Graham played a leading role was the design and installation of the No. 3 pitch floodlights. The installation involved three weeks of digging trenches for the cables, concreting the foundations, installing the poles, and fitting the lights - all achieved by club members. Graham has always been one to get stuck in on a variety of tasks, big and small. He helped out inter alia with: the Hilton –Petone Tournament, manning the charge gate at various venues including when we used to have the finals at the Basin Reserve; repairs and maintenance of just about everything in the clubrooms and the gymnasium; and manning the door for club functions. Graham was elected onto the management committee each year from 1979 until 1983. He then had one year as 1st team manager before stepping down from official roles. From 1990, he took time away to focus on his property in Otaki. When in 1995 he returned to the club, he was elected back onto the Management Committee and was re-elected each year until he signalled his unavailability at the end of the 2002 season. In 2003, Graham was elected a Life Member in recognition of both the extent and the intensity of his contribution both while an elected club official for 20 years and in other years; a junior coach for more than 10 years; and a player for some 27 years. Graham has always been a major contributor to the club, undertaking so many tasks and usually in the background, often on his own, and out of the limelight. Over the past 9 years, Graham has not been an elected official, preferring to focus his contribution in areas where his expertise and knowledge is most invaluable: in maintenance, repairs, and over the past year particularly with the specifications and construction of the Honours Boards and Timeline boards. Graham really enjoys supporting the 1st team each week, the 2nds (when he can) and the under 19s, of which he has been a follower over many years. Having a good talk after the game with all the other old timers (and other privileged people) is something he really looks forward to, but unfortunately only after having to help pull down the nets and goalposts.
