Welcome... Hello and welcome to Memorial Park for today’s action against Wellington Olympic in the Central League and Wellington United in Capital Premier. A warm welcome to both visiting clubs, their players, coaching staff, management and supporters. Both Petone teams are coming off good results from last week and positive results today will provide so much confidence for the rest of round two. The 1st team have been dominant at home, however Olympic will be our biggest test to date. There will be no lack of motivation though as we look to reverse the result from Round 1 and also defend the O’Brien Shield again. Good luck to Fozzie and the boys for what should be a very entertaining game. The Reserves were very unlucky not to get all three points last week but missed a couple of great opportunities, which ultimately made the difference. They continue to play good footie and do remain positive. With a full round to go, they still have the opportunity to climb up the ladder. We’re getting very close to the end of Memorial #1 as a grass surface with news last week that the Artificial Turf installation is likely to begin in early July. This has been a lengthy project but finally the contracts between NZ Football (and FIFA), Hutt City Council and Capital Football have been signed. June 30th appears to be the date for our last home game and we’re planning to celebrate in style. This date also happens to be ‘Old Timers’ Day’ so keep an eye out for more information in the next week. The decision to install an artificial pitch on #1 certainly polarised opinions but as a club we have embraced the decision and have worked hard with both Capital Football and the Hutt City Council to ensure our traditional ‘home ground’ rights are retained. While some of us may prefer quality grass surfaces, an artificial turf does offer many positives and could be a very exciting opportunity for our club. Good luck to all Petone teams this weekend. The Visitors: Wellington Olympic The club was formed in 1959 by the Greek Community and the late Father Elias Economou under the name Christian Youth Football Club (CYFC). Jim Christie joined the club in 1961 and became President as well as a player, and he has been involved in one way or another ever since. CYFC had two teams and won its respective grades nearly every year, and were promoted. They gradually climbed the ladder up through the grades and entered the Central League Division Two in 1970, winning promotion to Division One for the 1978 season. In 1982 coach Peter Halikias helped guide the team to another Division Two Championship, regaining the first division status they lost the previous year. In 1983 CYFC changed its name to Wellington Olympic and were coached by Paul Norfolk. The team finished fourth but conceded far too many goals to have any real chance of challenging for the title. Wellington Olympic AFC is one of the premier football clubs in Wellington. It is the last remaining ethnic run football club in New Zealand. The club comprises 10 senior teams and eight junior teams. The seniors range from the competitive Central League and Capital Premier teams all the way to the social Capital 18 and Masters teams. Recent successes include being the 2009 Chatham Cup Winners, where the first team finished the season on a high after going 25 games straight without a loss. The following year the club added the Central League title to its trophy cabinet with a record of 16 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss to break another record of most points gained in a season in the history of the league. Memorial Park Artificial Gets Sign Off 30 May 2012 Capital Football, NZ Football (representing FIFA) and Hutt City Council are pleased to announce that the contract for the artificial turf at Memorial Park, Petone, has now been signed. It is expected that work will commence within the next month. The development of an artificial turf in the Hutt Valley is exciting and will further strengthen the Memorial Park complex as the ‘Home of Football’ for the Capital Football region. It will see clubs increasing the number of games able to be played on artificial turf, thus ensuring that teams can be confident that that their matches won’t be postponed because of adverse weather conditions. The evidence from the experience on artificial grounds already in use in Wellington is that the quality of the surface is contributing to a corresponding increase in the quality of the football. The new turf will provide a quality centralised venue for Capital Football’s Talent Programmes and is likely to enable more regional and hopefully, national tournaments to be hosted in the Hutt Valley. Aaron Marsh, Sportsgrounds Assets Manager at Hutt City Council said they are also looking forward to the development of the turf getting underway, with its completion being a major contribution to top sporting facilities in the Hutt Valley. Funding has come from Hutt City Council, Capital Football, Petone Football Club, FIFA, Wellington Community Trust, Southern Trust, Infinity Foundation, Lion Foundation and Pelorus Trust. From The Balcony! And with a puff of magic dust I’m back! Steve Minogue has offered me a contract too good to refuse. How are you all? Keeping warm? Eating lots of casseroles? Excellent, then I shall begin... I haven’t said this yet, in match programme format, but the honours board in the clubrooms is flipping fantastic. You may have seen me recently gazing at it with the mystery and mouthbreathing skills of an 8 year old at a Wiggles concert. Stroking my beard and going “yes I remember that name” or “David Lane? Pretty sure he owes me $50”. I love a bit of history and paying homage to people who have achieved at a high level. I’m not up there as yet. When it comes to the amount of “Heinekens enjoyed within the clubrooms and/or balcony catchment area” I should be right up there though. Seeing the NZ reps reminds me of the tidy win the All Whites had the other day over Honduras. Now that was a great win but the TV coverage? Good that we got to see it but was the game from the 1970s? The picture was awful. It was like it was being played on Neptune. It was being played in the US! Maybe the cameras just needed a quick once over with the Mr Muscle? It was great to see so many young players out there for the All Whites - the future looks pretty good. As long as it all leads to another qualifier at the Cake Tin, I’m happy. Last week Petone came off with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wellington United and today they play the always impressive Olympic. Can I say I once played an Olympic team on the Basin Reserve Boy that turf was sexy. Wellington’s sexiest turf it was once voted. However every time I would whip in a cross and it wasn’t converted I would look at the captain and go “why haven’t we got a gully in there?” Huge confusion on my behalf. Life Member: Phil Pickering Phil joined the club’s junior ranks in 1959 and went on to represent Hutt Valley from under 12 through to under 16 age groups from 1962 through to 1967. As a 17 year old, he became a junior team coach and ‘Mr Pickering’ to a wide range of youngsters for about 10 years, and was also a junior management committee member (along with his Dad) through to 1972. Phil was active in fund raising projects that were the norm in those days: bottle drives, house painting and raffle selling. He made his debut in the 1st team with a game against Lower Hutt on Memorial No.1 at the end of the 1968 season, the inaugural year of Central League. He recalls in the years ahead receiving an envelope from time to time with a small win bonus paid by a club benefactor. In 1969, Phil was in the 2nd team that won the Division III Knock-out Cup and were semifinalists (beaten by the 1st team) in the Hilton Petone Tournament. He went on to make 54 appearances for the 1st team, a figure that would have been higher had it not been for ongoing injury issues. Phil’s injury cloud had a silver lining in that he took on the job of collecting the crates of flagons from the New Central Hotel every Saturday, and he still holds the unofficial world record for the number of flagons carried in a Hillman Minx – 120. The sing-songs that characterised the after-match functions in those days are legendary, as was Phil’s lead in ‘Mama don’t allow no guitar playing around here’. Phil was an inaugural member of the Supporters’ Club, having been one of five club members who met and gained management committee approval to set it up in 1972. One of that Club’s first moves was to re-establish raffle sales at the New Central. The beer purchases from the New Central had no doubt helped with a foot in the door but the Manager was also our Patron. The money raised was much needed and Phil was involved in running the raffles for about 20 years, putting himself at risk on several occasions as he encouraged gang members to give back a meat pack that had been spirited away or as he dodged the flying glass from an axe-wielding rampage! Phil served as Treasurer of the Supporters’ Club from 1972-81, Secretary 1975-77 and 1984-85, and as Chair 1980-81 and 1984-89. What this list of many years of very much hands-on service doesn’t show is not only the hundreds of hours the roles consumed, but the thousands of dollars raised to help fund our major projects and the tremendous social atmosphere that so many enjoyed. In 1976, Phil, became the club’s first licensed bar manager and saw us through that learning period when much attention was being paid to sports clubs’ adherence to the new licensing regime. He set high standards for the
club to strive to maintain, and held the position through to 1987 when his wife Pam became ill. As an aside, Phil’s role included that of dog control officer – a necessity at a time when a few club members liked to bring their extended families into the clubrooms! A member of the Management Committee from 1978 to 1983, Phil was particularly helpful with numerous maintenance projects and ad hoc tasks like replacing the light bulbs in the gym on a swaying scaffold or fully extended ladder. In earlier years he had been a major contributor to the ditch digging for cables and installation of our No. 3 pitch floodlights. From 1989 he was appointed as one of our two Directors on the Board of Hutt Valley United and he held this position for three years – a period which included some rather difficult circumstances that led to Petone’s withdrawal. Phil was elected to life membership in 1989 in acknowledgement of his having been a player, a coach, and administrator for 31 years, but more particularly for the huge amount of work that Phil had crammed into the last 21 of those years. In 1992, he became coach of the Women’s 1st team for two years, enjoying the opportunity to help a team that included both Sandra and Angela. After that he had his first break from full-on involvement in 1995, when he spent time overseas supporting Sandra with her career, and he was regularly overseas from then until his permanent return in 2001. In 2002, with son Jordan taking to the fields, Phil resumed junior team coaching and continued to coach Jordan’s team for another six years. The rejuvenation from that experience prepared Phil well for becoming involved with management of the 1st team from 2007, and he continues to fulfil the manager role. In February 2004, the club was particularly indebted to Phil for his huge effort in dealing with the impact that major flooding in the area had on the ground floor of the clubrooms. The office, junior room, tuck shop, gear storage areas and the gym were inches deep in floodwaters which inflicted over $60k damage. Phil’s time and energy spent in returning the facilities to a usable state were vital and invaluable to us. In the last 4 years or so Phil has taken it upon himself to do off-season turf maintenance on No.1 pitch after becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of attention shown to the ground. This attitude has seen Phil fulfil more tasks around the club than I can state here. He has been an active member of our club for 47 years and his contribution over that time has been absolutely exceptional. John Bradbury
