HOLISTIC & NATURAL GUIDELINES AND RESOURCES FOR YOUR PETS NUTRITION by Cheryl Larson, Pet Journal Columist clarson@petjournalmidwest.com Garlic has antiseptic, antibiotic, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties. It can also be used as an anthelmintic (de-worming agent). It acts as a potent expectorant (helps bring phlegm or mucous up and out of the airway). It can lower blood pressure and prevent blood clots. And it can support the formation of good bacteria in the digestive tract. In the U.S., garlic is commonly fed to dogs due to its reputation for repelling fleas and ticks. The sulfur in the garlic is excreted through the dog’s skin, keeping fleas at bay. How to feed Garlic The most important ingredient in garlic is a substance known as “allicin,” which is formed from a combination of two enzymes found separately inside garlic cloves. The first, “alliin,” is a nonvolatile, odorless sulfur amino acid. When a clove is cut (or chewed), alliin comes into contact with another enzyme called “alliinase.” Combined, the enzymes become allicin, a pungent, volatile sulfur compound that gives garlic its distinctive taste and smell.

Allicin is unstable; it converts into other compounds if it is not stabilized during manufacturing. Heat, in particular, drastically reduces allicin yield. Due to intense competition in the market, most companies that make garlic supplements for the medicinal benefits for humans monitor the amount of allicin in their products. Many state their stabilized and standardized allicin yield on their packaging. If you feed dried garlic, whether in a powdered or granulated form, the important thing is to get garlic that has not been heat-treated. Begin with a low dose, introducing garlic in increasing amounts over a week or two until you are feeding the entire dose. An average dose of garlic for large dogs should be about one fresh, crushed garlic clove per day. If you feed pure, cold-processed garlic powder or granules, the equivalent is about a half-teaspoon. The suggestion for medium-sized dogs is half a clove (or 1/4 teaspoon of powder); for small dogs, give just a quarter clove

A “best buy” date Excerpted from -by Nancy Kerns, Whole Dog Journal at least six months away. Supplements made for dogs may be the easiest way to use garlic. Garlic falls into the more is not better category as it could lead to condition called hemolytic anemia, which is characterized by the bursting of red blood cells circulating through your pet’s body. Ingestion can also lead to gastroenteritis, causing stomach pain. Symptoms may take 2 to 4 days to appear. Watch for breathlessness, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, pale gums, an elevated heart rate, an increased respiratory rate, weakness, exercise intolerance, and collapse. Hops used in the brewing of beer is very toxic to dogs, only a few flower heads can lead to elevated body temperature, racing heart, anxiety, abnormal clotting and death. Home beer brewers with pets will want to be extra cautious about storage of Hops.

What to Avoid in your pet food, meat by-products (of dubious origin and not typically stored as carefully), a “generic” fat (can literally be of any animal origin including restaurant grease), added sweeteners (used to persuade animals to eat food comprised of grain fragments), and artificial colors, flavors or preservatives (food should be appealing because it is made with healthy meats and fats, things that dogs and cats love naturally)! Please feel free to stop in to discuss any of these topics in further detail. If you live with a carnivore as a pet it is important to understand how they were designed to eat naturally, and to look for foods that strive to provide nutrients closest to the natural form. Cats eat mice and birds and reptiles, and dogs eat chickens, deer and sheep. Many pets are vegetarian for those who find it objectionable to feed a carnivore a species appropriate diet. Resources include, Whole Dog Journal and

Reading a Pet Food Label can be daunting, especially with all the conflicting information out there. Whole Dog Journal provides helpful criteria for the selection of dry food. You want to see on the label, lots of named animal protein at the top of the list-chicken, beef, etc. Not “meat meal”. When fresh meat is first, then a meat protein meal should augment this. Also, you want to see whole vegetables, fruits

PRODUCT REVIEWS by Seth Minaker, Pet Journal Columist sminaker@petjournalmidwest.com Hello Readers! March is already here and soon we’ll be close to spring. For many, this will be relief after such a harsh winter. I’ll be sad to see the snow go, but also welcoming the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Appropriately for April, I will be reviewing some useful spring products. For this month’s article, I’ll be honest; I had a difficult time finding suitable products. After writing this for so long, I sometimes feel like I’ve ran out! As I’ve said before, if you know of a product you think others would enjoy, please email me! In the meantime, enjoy what I found:

a dog’s coat, appearance, energy and overall health. LICKS® make administering vitamins easy; no need to hide pills or tablets in treats. LICKS® is a liquid vitamin consisting of a base of slow-roasted chicken broth with active ingredients dissolved right in. Dogs will eagerly eat it up, whether drizzled over their food or directly from the packet. LICKS® also provides a 98% absorption rate, compared to 20% - 30% for pills, chews, or powders. Available in three formulas. www. licksfordogs.com Price varies. PetCo® Comfort Grip(upper right): Most litter scoops are made out of plastic. I’ve always found that a problem when cleaning litter as the scoop is hard to hold, flexes, and difficult to clean. Comfort grip eliminates those problems with its durable metal construction and easy-grip handle. The jumbo scoop is easily cleaned and works with almost any litter. Available in a range of colors. $10.99 Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next month

Links-It™(upper left): A great product for dog owners! Links-It™ solves the problem that arises when your dog needs his nametag removed or replaced. Conventional wire rings are crude and make changing tags difficult, to say the least. LinksIt™ changes that, with an effective patent-pended lock system proven to not open accidentally. Made out of quality materials, it can be locked thousands of times and not rust, fade, or break even withstanding a 35 pound load. Plus, it’s easily cleaned, lightweight, and materials Editors Note: Is there a product stop annoying ‘jingling’. www. you like to have reviewed? REPTILE CORNER

VEILED CHAMELEONS ~ CHALLENGING BUT REWARDING by Dr. Michael Wenninger, Pet Journal Contributor Veiled chameleons inhabit coastal mountain regions of Saudi Arabia and Yemen. They are arboreal lizards that inhabit a variety of habitats from lush tropical regions to more arid scrub environments. The temperatures found in their native habitats range from 75 - 95 degrees. They are insectivores but will eat other small animals that can be overpowered. Chameleons have several distinct characteristics that separate them from other lizard species. They are laterally compressed and generally thin. The males have prominent casques on top of their heads and are much larger and more brightly colored than females. There eyes move independently and chameleons have excellent eyesight. Prey is hunted by sight and captured using a long flexible tongue that may extend up to 1.5 times the length of the body. Captive care of veiled chameleons should mimic natural environments. They should be kept in open-air or screen type enclosures with adequate ventilation. A temperature gradient from 75 - 95 degrees should be provided. The enclosure should be heavily planted to provide visual barriers and micro-habitats. It should include vines and small branches for climbing. Since veiled

chameleons are arboreal species and generally drink from dew or rain collected on leaves or from rain running off of their heads, they require a misting system or adequate spraying to maintain hydration. They should be fed a variety of “gutloaded” insects daily. Supplemental calcium and vitamins are required. They are believed to be incapable or inefficient in the conversion of beta carotene to vitamin A so a supplement containing vitamin A is beneficial. Chameleons also require UVB irradiation for activation of vitamin D and subsequent calcium metabolism. Common medical problems in captivity are usually associated with underlying husbandry problems. We Editors Note: Dr. Michael commonly see respiratory diseases, Wenninger is an Associate ocular diseases, dermatologic Veterinarian at Spartian Animal conditions, hypocalcemia, and Hospital in McFarland, WI. hypovitaminosis A in veiled chameleons. A thorough history and physical examination can help to determine the underlying cause of the presenting disease process. Sometimes bloodwork, radiographs, ultrasound, cultures, or Where All Birds are Exceptional!!! other workup is needed to determine SPECIALIZING IN: the specific process. If you notice any abnormalities it is best to have Breeding Exotic Birds an experienced reptile veterinarian Handfed/Out-of-Nest examine your chameleon. Box Chicks

ASK SCRAPPY! by Scrappy, Pet Journal Columnist and Mascot askcrappy@petjournalmidwest.com Happy March to everyone! Why happy?? Well, in a few short weeks we’ll be celebrating the first day of spring on March 20th! Now, don’t expect to be hopping and frolicking on your plush green lawn with puppies and bunnies dancing madly to happy singing birds. No, just get that idea out of your head right now. A certain obese rodent from Pennsylvania has slammed on the breaks to any possible enjoyment on 2014’s first day of spring. Mr. Groundhog (also known as a whistle-pig?, go figure) has cursed us with six more weeks of winter. Who gave him the on/off switch for winter? Apparently, a group of humans who call themselves the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club meet on the morning of February 2nd at Gobbler’s Knob (Wait, WHAT? No, I’m above this) in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The club members, dressed in suits and top hats then rifle the whistle-pig outa bed, thrust him above their heads and demand a weather prediction. The groundhog speaking in Groundhogese directs the club president, who speaks fluent Groundhogese (bars must open pretty early in Punxsutawney), to a scroll that contains the prediction for spring’s arrival. I’m not making this stuff up. There’s a website that explains some of the lore surrounding the G-Hog. There’s also some nonsense about Phil drinking some elixir that grants him eternal life and

that he’s 126+ years old! I suppose he sparkles in sunlight too (this will be my first and LAST Twilight reference… ever. I promise). Is the whole country going nuts! I’ll never complain about living in Wisconsin again. Yeah, we have bigfoot, the hodag, werewolves, ghosts galore, the occasional chupacabra, and aliens, but the one thing one don’t have or need is a rat the predicts the weather. It’s the 21st century where we have super high definition mocha flavored laser coffee, robots delivering pizza, rocket cars we can take to our summer homes on the moon, a dog and cat running for the oval office in 2016, and we still allow an attention starved chubby rat prognosticate our weather for us. Are we still in the dark ages? My only reminder this month is about St. Patrick’s Day. I know I’ve mentioned this at least a dozen times, but for some reason it doesn’t seem to sink in. No treats for us. I know you may think beer is really no big deal and with it being green, it almost seems like medicine. But alcohol is extremely bad for us. Try to remember this while you celebrating St. Patrick’s banishing of the snakes from Ireland. Poor snakes, what did they do to anyone. Also, please do not, no matter how cool you think it’ll look, dye us green. As a dog, we’ll just sit there and let you have your fun while we pity you. Cats,

SCRAPPY on the other hand, will bring down wrath of a thousand angry demon cats to punish you for the indignity you brought against them. Maybe it would be a good idea to just skip the whole dying process. Well, I think that’s about enough for this month. Even with the weather, I hope everyone has a great March and just keeps thinking about the summer that’s coming up. I have to busy myself with something to take my mind off the freezing temperatures and snow covering the ground. I know, I’ll unpack my clothes and start working on my look for the summer. Dig out all my shorts and Affliction shirts (hey, I’m a pit bull and an MMA champion). Start hitting one of those 24 hour gyms and bulking up and then it’ll be lots of trips down to the beach to bark at all the lady dogs and do some casual posing.

PETS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION AT AREA RESCUES AND SHELTERS

Hi! My name is Baby and I am an adorable Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix in need of a forever home. I am a sweet girl who is well mannered and loves life. I am a quiet girl who is not a barker and would do well in a household that is able to give me rules and boundaries as well as plenty of love. I do have an independent side and love settling down with a good toy as well as a good snuggle with a person. I am only 4 years old, spayed, housetrained, current on my vaccinations, microchipped, and very sweet! I could be all yours for a low adoption fee of $180. I hope to meet you soon! Oconto Area Humane Society, www.ocontoareahumane.org.

Scooter is a 22 year old diva who adores to be doted over! She has had a very leisurely type of life... has never been saddle trained... to our knowledge... however she is so far very accepting of a saddle and is well started. She was a pasture ornament... (a very beautiful one at that!) her whole life with the same owner. The owners moved cross country and could not take her with them. She is sound, healthy and moves like a horse half her age!! She stands about 14.1 hh and is a very lovely and elegant Polish Arab. Scooter spent all her years with a gelding who recently passed... so she is very used to and desires to be with at least one other horse. Applications can be downloaded off our website www.rescuehorses.org. Please email any questions to rescue. horses@yahoo.com.

Allow me to introduce myself - I’m Richard. Aren’t I just the most handsome boy you’ve ever met? I was a surrender here at the shelter - one of the family members I lived with came down with allergies and so they brought me into Washington County Humane Society. I am such a good boy but I do need time to get used to a new home. Once I feel comfortable, I just want to be with you. I am looking for a special family to care for and love me. I would prefer a home with children over the age of 10. Come in today and ask for me - Richard! Washington Co. Humane Society, www.washingtoncountyhumane.org.

she got from her mom. She is not actively sick but it may affect her immune system later down the line. Also she needs to live alone due to the possibility of spreading it to another bunny. Godiva does need eye drops everyday but she is a very easy patient. Godiva loves her free range play-times and is doing incredibly well with her litter box. Godiva’s foster home is socializing her with kids and other animals and she is doing great with everyone! Please contact K&R Small Animal Sanctuary @ kr_ small_animal_sanctuary@yahoo.com

NATIONAL SURVEY: WISCONSIN RANKS SECOND IN BIRD WATCHING from WI DNR, reprinted with permission MADISON - Wisconsin ranks second nationally in the proportion of citizens considered birders, with fully one-third of residents 16 and older reporting they travel to watch birds, or actively watch and identify birds around home, according to a recently released U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service report.

to our natural resources, and their vibrant colors, soothing songs, and high degree of visibility make birds a crowd favorite.” Wisconsin features both northern and southern breeding species and sits astride a major migration pathway, allowing birders easy access to one of the most diverse collections of bird life in the United States. More than 400 species have been recorded in the state, with the vast majority of species and numbers being migratory birds. Others, like chickadees, cardinals, grouse, and turkeys, are permanent residents

Wisconsin trailed only Vermont, where 39 percent of residents are birders, and tied with West Virginia, where 33 percent of their population also watches birds. Numbers-wise, however, the Badger State vastly outnumbered those two states, with Wisconsin boasting 1,678,000 birders, compared to 292,000 for the Green Mountain State and Brady says spectacles such as 574,000 for the Mountain State. staging sandhill cranes, waterfowl migration on the Mississippi “Wisconsin is well known for River, goose migration at Horicon its rich tradition of birding and Marsh, booming prairie chickens, other forms of wildlife watching,” overwintering bald eagles, and says Ryan Brady, Wisconsin Bird more than 30 species of warblers Conservation Initiative monitoring are some of the state’s biggest coordinator and Department of birding draws. Alarm Clock Kitties from catsinternational.org, reprinted with permission It’s spring and Cats International Hotline is ringing with calls from sleepy cat owners. Early morning sunshine is convincing kitties that 3 - 5 am is ideal for hunting. (Cats are naturally dawn and dusk hunters). Since many kitties are indooronly cats, the prey becomes the nick-knacks on the dresser, Mom and Dad’s feet, or the other cat in the house. All of the above get Kitty into a lot of trouble, so an early morning chase ensues. This isn’t what Kitty had in mind, but it’s just as good. Let’s face it, any time a little 7 lb. creature can get a person who is 6 times his size and at least 20 times his weight out of a reclining position, then victory has to be claimed by the diminutive one. If he actually succeeds in getting a meal out of this fiasco, then his victory is complete and forever engraved in his memory.

If you are one of those sleepy people who are regularly awakened by a feline alarm clock, then give some serious thought to conducting a strenuous interactive play session with Kitty just before bedtime. Fishing pole-type toys allow you to relax in a comfortable chair while Kitty runs off some of that pent-up energy. Ten to fifteen minutes is all it usually takes to wear Kitty out. Don’t stop until he is lying on his side batting at the toy (too tired to chase after it). If you still get that early morning wake-up call, Kitty will have to have his own bedroom for awhile. This is not a punishment, just an evening routine that Kitty will learn to accept. Kitty’s room should be a comfortable temperature with a litterbox on one end and his food and water on the other end. A favorite bed, some toys, and a window perch (to watch the early morning wildlife) would also be nice. Give him a special

food treat each time he is put in his room so that he soon will look forward to bedtime (and you will look forward to a good night’s sleep).

ECO NEWS CITY TREE CHAMPIONS FROM ALL OVER LAUDED FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THEIR NEIGHBORS from WI DNR, reprinted with permission MADISON -- They hail from Fond du Lac, Sparta, Mequon, Stevens Point and Milwaukee. Their selfless work has brought economic, environmental and social benefits to their neighbors - and it all started with the trees up the street. Every year about this time, the Wisconsin Urban Forestry Council honors citizens, groups and communities for their hard work making sure there are healthy, thriving trees that can make a community unique and special. Jeff Treu, chair of the council’s award committee, says these local leaders take it upon themselves to care for a resource that many take for granted.

that, residents miss a tree when it is removed for reasons of health or safety. In addition to aesthetics, trees contribute to our health and well- being,” Treu says. “These awards honor those who appreciate not only the beauty of trees, but in addition, how they help clean air, hold soil in place, increase property values, help manage storm water, and promote sustainability in our urban forest -- the forest where we live. “Well-managed trees pay back to their home communities three-times the cost to plant and to maintain them,” Treu says. “It must be noted that the work of these people, many of whom are volunteers, help their neighbors in economic ways as well.”

In times of limited budgets, these award winners have helped stretch those limited dollars with volunteer labor and savings by keeping valuable resources from going into landfills. These savings have been plowed back into the community’s urban forests that line streets, fill city parks and grace lawns. The Wisconsin Urban Forestry Council waded through many worthy nominations and selected the following for the five awards that reflect their efforts in 2013. The awards were announced at the 2014 Wisconsin Arborist Association/DNR conference in Green Bay this January and will be presented in their individual communities at special events. • Distinguished Service: The winner is Laura DeGolier of Fond du Lac.
