For decades owners of muzzled dog have experienced prejudice when out and about. However, amongst younger owners, the mood is shifting. The stereotypical status “aggressive dog” sporting a muzzle is a thing of the past. A new study Company of Animals on behalf of Baskerville (2022)* found that 31% of the nation’s dog owners acknowledging their need for a muzzle during visits to the vet or a groomer. It is therefore hardly surprising that 61% of these muzzle purchasers cite “stressful situations” rather than “aggression or biting” as their reason for purchasing this training tool. With this insight, pet professionals can leverage their influencer status to normalize muzzle usage and pave the way for fighting the stigma around muzzles.
Wearing a fabric muzzle even briefly will interfere with one of the dog’s most sensitive and essential respiratory process: panting.
By design, fabric muzzles only allow the dog to breathe through the nose thus ruling out every kind of exercise, temperature fluctuations or stress levels for the dog lest their health and welfare be at risk. A normal body temperature for a dog is between 38.3°C and 39.2°C but an increase in any of the aforementioned factors can cause major distress and sadly, rapid death even within minutes of wearing a restrictive muzzle.
We believe that as canine professionals you have the influence to steer public opinion and educate dog owners of the risks in using products that are unsafe for dogs and people alike.
The Baskerville™ study* found that 62% of muzzle users cited “comfort” as a requirement for their purchase decision while 54% acknowledged the ability to pant happily as being crucial to their choice.
Designed by experts for over 35 years, Baskerville humane muzzles guarantee high standards of safety both for dog and owner, while allowing the best comfort possible for the dog to pant, drink and take treats.
Elected as the Best dog muzzle**, Baskerville is recommended and used by behaviourists and vets around the world
Respect the dog’s welfare: they can pant, drink and take treats easily.

By store count, PetSmart holds the distinction as the largest pet retailer, operating about 1,660 pet stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, along with more than 200 in-store PetSmart PetsHotel dog and cat boarding facilities. The company continues to focus on serving pet parents and solving their problems in an assortment of ways. In addition to carrying a wide range of pet food and assorted accessories, PetSmart also offers services like dog training, pet grooming, PetSmart Doggie Day Camp and pet adoption. The company this year has ushered in a new store opening as well as novel partnerships that support the humanization of pets and their pet parents. Meanwhile, PetSmart’s charitable arm is making substantial investments to help improve access to veterinary care across the country.
In April, PetSmart hosted its latest grand opening celebration at its newest location in Surprise, AZ. The new store spans more than 16,400-squarefeet, providing a comprehensive lineup of products for cats, dogs, fish, birds, reptiles and small pets. The store also offers services including pet training, adoptions through PetSmart Charities and a full-service grooming salon where dogs and cats can receive hands-on care from academy-trained and safety-certified stylists.
PetSmart Veterinary Services: In 2022, noting the increasing strain on the veterinary care system, PetSmart launched PetSmart Veterinary Services (PVS), an independent business ownership model that allows veterinarians to open their own franchised practice inside a PetSmart store. Its first hospital opened in September 2022 in Peoria, AZ. “Since announcing PVS, we have received a tremendous response from veterinarians across the country expressing interest in becoming business owners and excitement for the opportunity to begin building their own practice,” said John Bork, Senior Vice President of Vet Health Services at PetSmart. “Opening this first hospital location brings great momentum to the future of
PVS and the continued support of veterinarian professionals who we know will do anything for pets through their expertise and diligent care.”
Through PVS, veterinarians can open their own franchised practice, making it possible to operate an independent business at the fraction of the cost of starting a new practice on their own. PVS performs the build-out for each of the hospitals and provides some of the cutting-edge veterinary equipment necessary for the operation of the hospital. In addition, each owner receives administrative support from PVS’ experienced team of dedicated industry experts. Meanwhile, to ensure the highest standard of care, every PVS hospital will maintain American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation, giving the hospitals a competitive edge and pet parents more confidence in the care provided to their beloved pet. “PetSmart Veterinary Services is all about putting veterinary hospital ownership back in the hands of veterinarians,” said Dr. Jaime Klimsey Pickett, DVM and Owner of the Peoria location. “Since I began practicing veterinary medicine, I have seen the difference in the care provided to pets and the happiness and fulfillment of the veterinarians themselves when they are in control of their own business. This independent ownership model empowers doctors to continue to do what they love while supporting their own career and personal development. It is a win-win for veterinarians across the country.”
In 1994, PetSmart pioneered the veterinary services in retail stores model when it partnered with Banfield Pet Hospitals—now owned by Mars—to open in-store veterinary clinics in many of its retail locations, according to the American Animal Hospital Association. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) reported in 2022 that even with the new franchise model, many of PetSmart’s existing in-store veterinary clinics are still operated by Banfield. Banfield itself had also offered a franchise model for its PetSmart partnership but discontinued those offers in
2009, according to the AVMA. Mars acquired Banfield in 2007.
Healthy & Happy Pets: PVS is a point of focus in PetSmart’s first corporate social responsibility (CSR) report, “A World Through Their Eyes,” released in March. Recognizing the opportunity to take a greater role in setting the standard around key issues, PetSmart formalized CSR as a cross-functional discipline to document the impactful work already happening, while identifying new opportunities to drive meaningful business and societal change. “This report captures the important progress we’ve made and sets the foundation for continued industry leadership across our commitments to our people, the pets in our care, the planet and the communities we serve,” said J.K. Symancyk, President and CEO of PetSmart. “I’m proud that our priorities reflect the thoughts, beliefs and passions of our more than 50,000 associates who are at the heart of everything we do.”
The report focuses on three key priority areas: Healthy & Happy Pets, Empowered People and Responsible Stewards. The latter two areas feature initiatives like doubling financial support to associates through the PetSmart Associate Assistance Foundation, funded by the company and associates, bringing total support to $6 million in grants for more than 4,500 associates since the program’s inception; and diverting 58 percent of waste in stores and 1.8 million pounds of e-waste from landfill through donation and recycling programs.
PetSmart made good on its stewardship goals this July by becoming the Pet Sustainability Coalition’s first retail-focused ICON member, its highest membership level, alongside its all-natural pet products subsidiary Only Natural Pet. “PetSmart has had a long-standing partnership with the Pet Sustainability Coalition and we’re grateful for their support and guidance along our sustainability journey,” said Joanne Dwyer, VP of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability who joined PetSmart to guide the company’s CSR strategy.
Keeping animals safe is a top priority for animal rights officials and law enforcement in San Antonio and surrounding cities. City officials and legislators are aggressively advocating for animal rights and educating pet owners on the resources available to keep pets safe and how to become wiser, more conscientious pet owners. The city is also fast emerging as a hotbed for innovation and creative approaches in the pet retail community.
Within the San Antonio market, 30 different companies represent 75 pet specialty store locations, an increase of three store locations since 2022. San Antonio houses 54 pet stores, followed by neighboring Boerne and New Braunfels each with four locations and Bulverde and Helotes each with two locations. Breaking down the pet specialty retailers in the San Antonio market, Petco, PetSmart and Pet’s Barn represent nearly half, or 46 percent; the 20 single-store retailers account for 27 percent and the remaining 27 percent of retailers consist of multi-store retailers, notably Woof Gang Bakery, Pet Supplies Plus, Jupe Mills, Petland and Strutty’s Feed & Pet Supply.
San Antonio has a strong footprint of pet specialty retailers; however farm stores are also a key part of the market, owing to San Antonio’s long history with the agricultural industry.
“I love that I am making a difference in pets’ lives,” said Maricela Martinez, who owns the re-branded The Waggery, formerly SouthPaw Waggery. “I opened The Waggery because there wasn’t a place that I could find the quality of goods I was looking for—especially in certain areas of town. Since opening, I’ve had many people transition their pet over to new food, and they are so grateful as their pets’ health and overall condition has improved significantly. This has brought me closer to the community and more eager to carry the best of the best.”
PAWsitively Sweet Bakery is celebrating a milestone anniversary this year as the company has been part of the pet industry for 10 years. “San Antonio is an emerging market for pet businesses,”
said Esther Foster of PAWsitively Sweet Bakery located on Blanco Road in San Antonio. “We are celebrating 10 years and have seen major changes during that time. We continue to see more pet owners giving more thought to what they buy for their pets, and we're happy to be part of that journey.”
For Diana Farrar, Owner of Fifi & Fidos Pet Boutique, the ability to help people with their animals and to help the animals themselves is one of the things she enjoys the most about operating a pet business. “We primarily specialize in dog and cat nutrition, and it’s very rewarding when we have an animal that is just not doing quite right, and we’re able to help them by changing their diet or adding supplements in,” she explained. “It’s very rewarding because we’re able to help the animal, and we’re also helping the human behind them. I always tell everybody, Google can be your best friend or your worst enemy. I know how to search through Google to get good results. I know how to search—most people don’t. I always tell them, sure you can get on Google, but for example, if you type in 'raw diets,' you’re going to get 10,000 pages of conflicting information, and that can be very intimidating and very scary to somebody, especially if they’re trying to do right or if they have a dog who isn’t doing well or has a certain disease condition. They rely on us, and we become the experts and can hopefully guide them down that path.”
“It can be scary especially when we don’t know what’s going on with the dog or if the dog has been diagnosed with a specific disease,” she added. “That’s even worse because we just don’t know. It’s very scary for pet owners. I’ve been doing this for a long time, and so I’m able to help walk them through. I know a lot of the treatments that would probably be recommended by their vets. I know a lot of things I can hold their hand with. With a lot of vets, you have 10 minutes with them, and they may not be able to explain everything as thoroughly. We’re able to help with additional information on things for them and help them make their decisions they need to make.”
One of the biggest challenges Mar-
tinez addresses that retailers in other regions might not have to overcome is education.
“My greatest challenge has been learning how to explain to people that the food their vets typically prescribe is actually not good for them at all,” she explained. “It takes time to educate people on the importance of reading labels and learning what’s good and bad and what to look out for. Also, with small boutiques, the price point is a bit different than big box stores on certain products. Not all people appreciate paying for quality—it’s a matter of having them understand if you’d rather have to buy a new leash every year or pay more for one that will last you for years.”
One unique challenge is how “San Antonio is still behind the pet market trends and has been growing slowly compared to other metropolitan areas like Austin, Dallas and Houston among others,” Foster said. “We have found pet parents in San Antonio are more price conscious than other cities. Competition is fierce for the percentage of pet parents that are willing to purchase premium pet products. We have seen many pet businesses come and go throughout the last 10 years because it can be a challenging market.”
“There are fairly few retailers in town that are like we are,” Farrar said. “There are two other stores that I know of, and a couple more that are thinking about moving towards the holistic side of pet. It’s an interesting demographic here because if you were to look at the demographics and you look at the income in one certain area, there have been stores that have come in and out of the area and have not been successful. If you were to look at our medical center area, for example, you have a lot of doctors there, but don’t forget they also have tons of student debt. So their actual disposable income isn’t as much as you would think it would be. If you base your business decision on locating here on that demographic, not taking into consideration they don’t have the disposable income to do a lot of the higher level stuff, it’s interesting because we’ve

had businesses come and go. They were trying to sell to that demographic that just wasn’t there.”
“In San Antonio proper, we have a lot of people that just disregard pets entirely,” she continued. “I work with a lot of the rescues, and we have people that believe animals are not living breathing things—that they’re objects. Overcoming that is difficult. We’re working with the rescues to educate to try to make things better. But we do have a large percentage of the population that thinks animals are disposable. And that’s hard to deal with, especially as much as we love our animals.”
In mid-July the weather forecasted temperatures rising above 104 degrees, preceded by several weeks of temperatures higher than 100 degrees. “Thank heavens [elected officials] have come up with legislature that if the temperature is over X degrees, you are not allowed to leave your dogs out in it. I’m the type that if I see a dog that’s been left out, whether they have shelter, whether they have water, it doesn’t matter; it’s too bloody hot and I will call it in,” Farrar said. “I have no hesitation about doing that at all. I will call on them because that’s cruelty to animals. It’s awful, and I’m sure we are losing a lot of the strays simply because of the heat. It doesn’t look like it’s going to be lightening up anytime over the next couple of weeks. Through the end of the month and into August it’s going to continue to be this hot or hotter. It’s just horrible.”
The way forward is through raising awareness and educating the community. “We are bringing more education to people and people are starting to realize it’s just a slow slog. But working with the rescues and the animal control folks, I’m probably going to go in a couple of weeks to speak to the city council and make noise,” Farrar said. “That’s the only way we are going to get anything done is by being the squeaky wheel and by being really loud. I am a resident of this town, I’m a taxpayer in this town and I’m a business owner in this town. So going in front of the council with those three hats on should help gain their attention. I’m a business owner, solid citizen that has been in
here paying my taxes so listen to what I’m saying. I think the more of us who get together, the more we’re going to be heard and the more effective we can be at changing laws and regulations. The state legislature finally has put some teeth behind some of the regulations, which is a good thing and so then it has to trickle down here. We're fighting. We need to rearrange the budget a little bit and designate funding to not only street repairs but animal facilities and things like that. We need to redirect some of the dollars that aren’t being used wisely. It’s true in every city.”
Pure relationships have helped The Waggery survive and thrive in the San Antonio market, Martinez said. “It’s so important to develop relationships with your customers—I’ve become friends with some and have even ended up hiring a couple!” she said. “That one-on-one relationship leads to loyalty and leads to them referring you to their friends and family with confidence. My shop’s aesthetic has also been a big factor—my shop doesn’t look like a typical dog shop. Appearance and flow is very important to me, and many people appreciate the vibe they get when they come to The Waggery.”
In addition to its retail store, PAWsitively Sweet Bakery operates a commercial kitchen facility, which has helped the company thrive in the San Antonio market. “It gives us the ability to create and bake our biscuits, pastries and cakes,” Foster explained. “From the beginning, we have invested in professionals that have helped us develop and improve our products and brand. We can make product changes and introduce new products quickly. We have experienced team members that allow us to change, evolve and continue to grow. All those advantages have allowed us to get through the turmoil of the past few years.”
“We are very fortunate we have very loyal customers,” Farrar said. “It’s our customer service and word of mouth that allows us to grow and to survive and thrive. We do what we do and if we say we’re going to do it, we do it and we do our jobs well. Everybody is very well trained. We’re very small—there’s four of us here but everyone is very well trained to be able to answer all ques-
tions. We do delivery now. We do a lot of curbside. Big companies can’t tap dance like the smaller ones can.”
“It's being able to tap dance,” she added. “If we see a change in trends and buying habits we’re able to immediately pivot and that’s the advantage of independent businesses, is we can do that so easily. We’re not stuck with having to wait for somebody at corporate to give us the OK to change something. We see that with a lot of franchises or the corporately owned bigger stores. They can’t move as fast as we can. If somebody said today, for example if there was a recall on something that I saw coming down the road, that would be out of my store and by tomorrow, I will have a delivery coming in replaced by something else that I trust. I can do it instantly. People trust us, they trust our word and they know our word is good. Every single product I have in my store, I know who makes it, where it’s made, what it does, what it doesn’t do. My whole staff is very well versed. Getting a new product into my store, you have to jump through hoops. I’m feeding it to my pets too. if it isn’t safe for my pets it is certainly not safe for my customers’ pets.”
Meanwhile at The Waggery, “my customers are people who spoil their pet and want the best for them,” Martinez said. “They are open minded and love to learn and hear about all things food, gear and supplies. They are willing to venture into something different, as long as it benefits their pet. They aren’t afraid to invest in their pets’ health.”
Foster said the pet parents that frequent PAWsitively Sweet Bakery are “obsessed” with their pets and are willing to look for unique pet offerings outside the four walls of redundant big box chains. “They stop in because they want something special and different from what they find in the big box retailers,” she said. “Our staff goes above and beyond to cater to each dog and their human companions so our customers enjoy the experience.”

Like all things in life, it can be tempting to chase the latest trends. They’re new and offer an exciting world of possibilities. However, in pet food, we’ve seen that pet owners are becoming more actively engaged and informed about the health of their four-legged friends, and instead of foods with trendy ingredients, super premium pet foods with science-based, targeted nutrition are growing in popularity. In fact, super premium is currently the largest price tier within the total dog and cat pet food category and has the largest dollar growth within the dry dog pet food category. Since the first day together with your pet, you promised them their best life possible. For most consumers, that starts with feeding them proven nutrition that can lead to visible differences in their health, inside and out. Nutrition that not only tastes good but is also healthy and enables them to live their best life. Targeted nutrition formulas meet different nutritional needs depending on the dog’s or cat’s age, size, activity level and special needs such as sensitive skin and stomach. In fact, three-quarters of dog owners think it is important to buy food formulated for their dog’s size, breed, life stage or other need. Four out of 10 pet owners say they “would pay more for a food that was made specifically for their pet’s nutritional needs.” Outcome-based brands, such as Pro Plan® and Purina ONE®, are driving most of the growth in super premium.
We believe nutrition starts with understanding nutrients, not just ingredients. The best ingredients are the ones that work together to enhance one another’s performance. A smarter nutrient blend is more digestible and effective for a pet than a single ingredient. That’s why we don’t formulate our pet food on an ingredient basis but instead measure how different formulations affect a pet’s overall health. Every ingredient in every Purina dog and cat food recipe was selected for a specific purpose, and with your pet’s health in mind. You can visit purina.com/ ingredients to see pictures and read ingredient descriptions and benefits of every ingredient in every Purina food. We also believe that innovation should be pursued relentlessly, always focusing
on the pet’s nutritional needs, safety and well-being. Our innovation and product cycles are guided by research, and we apply our unrivaled scientific experience in pet nutrition, physiology and behavior to make new discoveries and push boundaries, creating real nutritional solutions that make a profound difference in the lives of pets. We have more than 500 scientists, veterinarians and nutritionists on staff, who work tirelessly to uncover breakthrough nutrition that helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives. This dedication to advancing nutritional science to help pets live longer, healthier lives led us to establish the Purina Institute, the global voice of Purina’s science, in 2018. The Purina Institute is pioneering the science of pet health. It is bringing a voice to research to reinforce our commitment to nutrition— because science is more powerful when it is shared. As a global professional organization, the Purina Institute shares Purina’s leading-edge research, as well as evidence-based information from the wider scientific community, in an accessible, actionable way so veterinary professionals are empowered to put nutrition at the forefront of pet health discussions to further improve and extend the healthy lives of pets through nutrition.
The result of our focus on science and research is a series of recent groundbreaking nutritional innovations like Pro Plan® Calming Dry Dog Food, a dog food that contains an optimal ratio of EPA and DHA to support calm behavior, and Pro Plan® LiveClear®, a revolutionary cat food that reduces allergens in cat hair and dander by an average of 47 percent starting with the third week of daily feeding. Our Pro Plan® Bright Mind® and Purina ONE® Vibrant Maturity® formulas both help fuel senior dogs and promote mental sharpness, and the new Purina ONE® with Microbiome Balance® formulas are shown to help balance bacteria in 28 days, promoting gut health, providing immune support and supporting your pet’s microbiome.
As consumers shop for the targeted nutrition their pets need, ensure your stores have the right assortment of science-backed formulas your consumers are looking for.
Retailers carrying the targeted dog and cat food products their consumers want are able to turn shoppers into loyal consumers who know they won’t have to look anywhere else to find what their pets need.
