Other laws have been considered in the market such as banning the pur chasing of animals in pet stores. In June, Clark County proposed that pet stores would not be allowed to sell, dogs, cats, rabbits and pigs in stores. “Nationally, there are around 500,000 dogs that are being used every single day for this breeding,” Michael Naft, Clark County Commissioner said. “What we’re trying to target are those who are really being inhumanely treated. All we’re trying to do is get those who are selling dogs, selling rabbits and other animals that have been bred irrespon sibly. This is just a common-sense ap proach to doing it.”

vices.Chin Li Kuck and Richard Hansen are owners of Las Vegas location, Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming Skye Canyon store. Kuck also owns another location in the market, and Carrie Little, another Las Vegas franchise owner, has contin ued to offer consumers personalized service and onsite specialty bakery with handmade treats and cakes for dogs.

Woof Gang Bakery

Woof Gang Bakery has more than 200 locations nationally, with three in the market occupying 4.41 percent of the market share. Woof Gang Bakery has become a leading specialty retailer of pet food, supplies and professional grooming services. The retailer offers grooming, pet resort, wellness, self-ser vice grooming and doggie daycare ser

As the 26th most populated city in the US, 53 percent of households in Las Vegas own a pet, which is nearly 126,000 households in the market. Ac cording to media reports, in 2020, 36.8 percent of households own a dog and 23.1 percent of households own a cat. Keeping in mind the challenges faced in 2020, many people opted for adop tion while working from home, and in populated cities like Las Vegas, adop tion rates skyrocketed while shelters were cleared out. However, with a turn of events, many of those same shelters ended up taking several pets back as people started to return to work and were no longer available to give their pets the attention they deserved. There has been a recent increase of pet dumping in the market, and accord ing to officials, many owners are real izing they can no longer afford to take care of their pets. While shelters and rescues are one of the best options for owners who can no longer care for their pets, Las Vegas pet owners have been abandoning pets all over the city rather than taking the proper steps to ensure they receive another chance at a forever home. The Animal Foundation has contin ued to take steps to ensure pets are given proper care and opportunities. Recently, Petco Love invested in The Animal Foundation to help save and im prove the lives of pets in Las Vegas. The foundation received a $100,000 grant from Petco Love in June. “We are grateful to Petco Love for their generous contribution to The An imal Foundation,” said Cassie McIntyre, Director of Development at The Ani mal Foundation. “This grant will help us fund our many lifesaving programs to benefit thousands of animals in our community.”Anotherlocal shelter is The Nevada SPCA, which has also had a positive im pact on the pet community and indus try. In 2021, the rescue was able to help 1,114 animals get adopted, 390 animals were helped through foster care, 331 kittens were rescued, and the rescue provided 22,865 meals through its Pet Food Pantry program. Alongside the efforts of several area rescues, local lawmakers have put legis lation in place to support pets’ well-be ing during the hot summer months. The law has made it a misdemeanor to keep pets in an unattended parked vehicle if weather conditions are extremely hot or cold. Owners can be hit with a hefty fine and possible jail time for subjecting pets to dangerous weather conditions.

While there have been several res cues and organizations that have taken on the task of helping the pet communi ty thrive in the market, independent pet retailers have also become the corner stone of the industry and pet communi ty while continuing to navigate through the challenges presented locally as well as nationally. Bogart’s Bone Appetit Bogart’s Bone Appetit has six loca tions in Las Vegas, which holds 8.82 percent of the market share. After be ing inspired by their rescue dog, Boga rt, Founders Rachel and Harold Vosko started the company in 2006. At Your Service Pet Supply is a fami ly-owned and operated pet supply store and has two locations in Las Vegas. At Your Service Pet Supply was founded in 2006 and has dedicated itself to putting consumers and pets first. The retailer offers home delivery, curbside pickup services and features a full-service grooming salon. At Your Service Pet Supply also features an as sortment of bakery items such as pet cookies and treats. The retailer is a huge advocate for helping rescues and shelters to support their search in finding forever homes for animals. The company works with many rescues and local support groups within the market and regularly hosts and sponsors adoption events. At Your Service Pet Supply partners with South West Exotic Avian Rescue (SWEAR), The Animal Foundation, The Churchill Foundation, Vegas Pet Rescue Project, Vegas Shepard Rescue and more. Closer Look Kimberly Gatto with The Wagging Tail outlined how the company decided to set up shop in Las Vegas as well as some of the factors that have helped the company thrive in the market. “I bought a business that was already established for three years,” Gatto ex plained. “The previous owner had the dream to set up shop and was looking for someone who shared her dream to take it over and take it to the next lev el—and I have. I will be celebrating my fifth-year anniversary on Oct. 1 and just renewed my lease for another five years.”“The reason I think our little shop thrives is our vibe,” Gatto continued. “When folks walk in, there is an energy that they feel that makes it exciting, fun and comfortable. Customer service is our priority and is the root of our suc cess. My motto is if you shop here once, you will have the best customer service in town; you continue to shop with us, you are now family. We get to know ev erything (in time) about our custom ers’ lives (not just their pets). We are about the family unit as a whole so we do things for pets and people. We con tinue to bring in new and exciting items to keep things fresh (as well as re-mer chandising the store so it looks new). Keeping on top of pricing is difficult, but we try hard to be competitive.”

SuperZoo SuperZoo, a highly attended pet in dustry tradeshow in North America, is hosted the majority of the time at Man dalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV. This year, the tradeshow is scheduled for Aug. 23-25. The World Pet Association founded the exhibition in 1950 as a forum for the entire industry to network, learn, and conduct business. In 1955, the tradeshow evolved to the Annual West ern Wholesale Pet Supply Association (WWPSA), and in 1975, the show be came the First International Pet Sup ply Tradeshow, but later went back to WWSPA. By 1983, the event began changing locations around the West Coast and southwestern states. WWSPA was held in Long Beach, CA in 1990, and finally changed its name to SuperZoo in 2000 during the show’s 50th anniver sary. A year later, the event changed its location to Anaheim Convention Center, but it wasn’t until 2004 that SuperZoo finally relocated to Las Vegas to—ac cording to the organization—to draw more national and international attend ees. Some highlights of this year’s show in clude a 300,000 square foot show floor with one of the largest assortments of pet products and supplies. According to media reports, this year the show will feature five specialty areas: Natural and Health; Specialty and Lifestyle; Farm and Feed; Aquatics, Reptiles and Small Animals and Groomer’s Marketplace. A panel of five industry experts will se lect first place winners and runner ups within 10 product categories. Looking Ahead Although there has been an increase in pet abandonment within the city, strong partnerships with retailers, rescues and the community have been able to shed light on the situation and hopefully, change it for the better. The region has become a hotspot for new and established pet retailers. Retailers have continued to thrive in the market that brings retailers, manufacturers and industry leaders together at the pet in dustry’s top tradeshow. The Las Vegas market has become a homebase for pet retailers, manufac turers, and industry leaders to gather and work together. The SuperZoo trade show has become a key gathering point in the market and continues to grow year after year.

According to Gatto, pet owners in the market are all diverse, but they have one thing in common: love and care for pets and animals in general. “Our pet owners come from all walks of life,” said Gatto. “We are in a commu nity that encompasses million-dollar homes as well as middle-class neigh borhoods. We have a high number of pet-friendly apartments and senior developments and they continue to build around us. They are all passionate about their pets and they only want the best for them, so they shop with us be cause we have natural and better nutri tional choices plus are knowledgeable in those things.”

“Most folks that live in Las Vegas are parents to one or a multitude of pets,” said Gatto. “They care about them deep ly and most are not satisfied with box stores, specialized or not, for their prod uct lines. I feel the trust is not there and they’re not able to get real answers to their questions from those employees. Most independents are educated and will spend the time helping pet parents with their concerns and doing the re search on those questions they may not have the answers to. That’s what sets most independent shops apart from the box and commercialized stores, and I truly believe that’s why we thrive here in Las BeginningVegas.”with love for a rescue dog, Gracie, Three Dog Bakery dedicated it self to learning how to bake high-quali ty treats and food for dogs with a sensi tive stomach. Las Vegas is among the fastest growing cities in the country and there are ample oppor tunities to take their pet out to enjoy.”

“Last year at SuperZoo our focus was on sustainable product lines and fresh foods and treats for pets,” he continued. “One of the product lines that stood out to me last year and that I’m looking for ward to introducing to our stores this year is West Paw. This product is avail able online but having a sustainable product line in our stores truly reso nates with our customer base. We are also anticipating building a relationship with a raw food vendor to introduce new lines to our stores as well.”

The Pet Station team is looking for new toys to rotate its assortment. “My personal goals are to chat with our ven dors and work on marketing plans for 2023,” said Lauren Brown, Corporate Merchandiser for Pet Station located in Gardnerville, NV. “Overall network ing and seeing products we may not be aware of would be a team goal. Our per spective has not changed on attending in-person trade shows; we have contin ued to attend all that are in our area that are“Weavailable.”areseeking new and innovative ‘non-consumable’ cat items in addition to simple ingredient cat protein rich foods,” said Jorge Aguilera, Sundries Buyer for Costco. As a first-time attendee at this year’s SuperZoo, Ren’s Pets’ VP of e-Com merce and Marketing Larissa Wasyliw is looking forward to seeing products across categories. “This is my first time going to the show so I’m eager to see ev erything that SuperZoo has to offer,” she said. “I do want to see the Vetdiet booth though, as it is our brand-new private label food and treats brand.”

“My biggest goal is to meet vendors that I haven’t been able to meet in per son with due to Covid, since I started with Ren’s during the pandemic,” Wasy liw said. “Secondly, I’d like to see what’s new and innovative when it comes to any pet technology. Thirdly, speaking from an e-commerce perspective, we’d like to get into Endless Aisle so higher ticket products, in particular crates, kennels, grooming, are of interest to me to see what would list on our website.”

Exhibitors’ and Retailers’ Goals

Exhibitor Austin and Kat encourages retailers to check out its first CBD-free product line: supplement powders. “Made entirely of microground botani cals, adaptogens, and USDA-certified or ganic mushrooms with no fillers, these new formulas are designed to let pet owners add powerful natural support to their pet’s routine,” said Founder Kat Donatello. “Similar to our functional CBD products, each powder is formu lated using natural ingredients proven to support pets in different ways. My fa vorite is our Hip and Joint blend packed with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory ingredients including freeze-dried New Zealand green lipped mussel, USDA-cer tified organic reishi mushroom, and tur meric.”One of The Bear & The Rat team’s goals is to raise awareness about the company’s digital marketing ability and how it serves to connect with pet owners. “The Bear & The Rat’s robust Instagram channel features several en richment ideas on how consumers can use frozen treats every month,” said The Bear & The Rat’s co-Founder Meg Hanc eford Meyer. “Furthermore, we have many consumers who give their dog a frozen treat every night because they have one serving of In Clover Research’s Optagest (prebiotics for healthy stools, less gas and four plant-based digestive enzymes for better food absorption), they are long-lasting and can calm them down. Retailers who understand the power of frozen treats are very success ful with our brand.”

The vibrant and energetic atmo sphere at SuperZoo lends itself to the overall experience exhibitors and show-goers take part in each year. The ability to shake hands with or hug friends and colleagues while witnessing reactions to packaging and products in person further support the argument for why it’s critical to attend trade shows face-to-face. Retailers value and appreciate feeling firsthand a comfort ing plush toy, a leash handle that seem ingly molds to their hands or tossing a squeaky toy that pets will raise their earsRetailersto. are eager to make their stores the place where pet owners dis cover brands. This is one reason why they’re building relationships with ex hibitors so that they can weave in brands and product lines that are new to their stores and shoppers. Tradeshows like SuperZoo mean for some retailers the treasure hunt of uncovering products they otherwise wouldn’t know about and therefore couldn’t recommend to their consumers. For smaller retailers, they don’t have the scale to showcase an entire product line on their shelves. They value the gracious and adaptable exhibitors who have been known to work with them to supply a condensed line; a scope which fits an independent pet retailer versus a big box chain, as an example.“I’mlooking forward to being back in Vegas for the show,” said Cody Goep pner, Director of Retail Operations for Bleyhl Co-Op in Grandview, WA. “We operate an independent co-operative with farm stores that supply and ser vice rural communities in Washington state. Even though we’ve seen online suppliers challenge our pet market, we have been able to strategically evolve our supplies and services to better take care of our customers—a big thanks in part to the SuperZoo show.”

“Our goals for SuperZoo are 10-fold,” said Goeppner with Bleyhl Co-Op. “It has always been a dynamic show that inspires us to progress our pet, animal health and feed departments. I rely on SuperZoo to introduce new products/ manufacturers, provide deals on the trusted products we serve our custom ers, the education sessions to better our operations, and partner with and strengthen our relationship with our current vendor suppliers who will also be at the show. As an independent, we aren’t always able to introduce a full line of new products, but we appreci ate our vendor partners that are able to supply us along with their other cus tomers. This helps us introduce indus try-leading products and services into ourDuringstores.”SuperZoo, Aguilera with Cost co aims to “identify four to six suppliers that we can potentially follow up on for viable SKUs as a test or inline rotations in the future,” he explained.

“The Healthy Hemp Company is a grassroots, relationship-driven group of like-minded individuals,” Merrell said. “Our ethos has not changed much since its inception back in 2014. This year’s event will offer us an opportunity to reconnect with many of our customers and friends. We are all looking forward to being together.”

“For myself, I love the virtual world and doing things online,” she said. “How ever, there are times when it is best to have physical meetings to form rela tionships with people and see/touch/ feel the products to get a good sense for them. So I’d say just like our pet custom ers, I like a hybrid experience of doing business online and in person.”

“We always love seeing both our cus tomers and other brands and what they are working on. It really helps keep the industry in-tune and there is nothing like getting inspiration from our peers in the industry,” Frangiosa Farms / Col orado Hemp Honey’s Seres said.

“While last year’s event was great, we are really hoping for a bigger retailer presence and to re-acquaint ourselves with some of our favorite retailers and industry influencers,” said Matt Seres, Brand Manager for Frangiosa Farms / Colorado Hemp Honey. “We are very excited to be able to bring our team’s energy and excitement as we launch our new 16 oz. bulk Canna Natural, 4 oz. CannaNatural Crush, and our newly reformulated CannaDrops Immune 5 Mushroom Blend,” Healthy Hemp Founder Dave Merrell said. “We have streamlined our packaging to help reduce waste while keeping our costs competitive without any impact to our premium quality. We will also be high lighting the new USDA certified organic label update. SuperZoo attendees will be able to see, feel and engage with our new products. We plan to utilize all re sources to create a memorable attendee experience, most notably, our team will be fully accessible. By having access to our team, we hope attendees will gain a better understanding that our premi um, tested, and trusted full-spectrum hemp products remain the best in the CBDCompaniescategory.”like West Paw have been investing added resources towards product innovation as the industry is progressing away from the pandemic and the resulting negative impacts. “As we are all feeling more confident that we are moving out of the pandemic, business is returning to pre-pandem ic feeling and by that we mean we are investing more in the innovation side of the business as opposed to supply chain and distribution issues,” said CEO of West Paw, Spencer Williams. “We re ally hope retailers will take away that we are investing in innovation e.g., new Toppl, new treat formulations, new hol iday products as well as investing in US manufacturing. We now operate two factories in Montana that are fully op erational delivering products on time across the US and to our distributors around the world. We are looking for ward to a strong fourth quarter and ful filling all holiday orders. We are excited to be back at SuperZoo stronger than ever with new products and even more capacity.”Oneof the Treatibles team’s goals for SuperZoo is to share its progressive, cutting-edge products and fair prices. “The takeaway for most people who vis it our booth is going to be the phenom enal value in Treatibles products, as we deliver ‘harmony for the whole family’ through affordable, high-quality CBD pet products,” said Founder and CEO Ju lianna Carella.

In-Person Tradeshows Bleyhl Co-Op merchants prefer to feel and see products in person before buy ing them in store. Company officials are similar in their approach to shopping for new products while attending trade shows where they too realize pictures rarely do products justice when you can see them in person and can feel the quality of the materials.

Exhibitors appreciated tradeshows long before the pandemic and after experiencing virtual shows, their grat itude has only deepened. “Our entire team looks forward to SuperZoo each year,” said Austin and Kat’s Donatel lo. “Although we like to keep in touch by phone and our retailer newsletter, there’s really no replacement for meet ing folks face-to-face. We invest a lot of time and research in creating our for mulas. Every ingredient has a purpose. Our products do especially well when we have the opportunity to share what we’ve learned with our customers— from tips and tricks to the many natural benefits of our ingredients. You’ll catch our team excitedly explaining ingredi ent profiles or chatting with retailers about feedback from their staff and cus tomers from show open until close.”

“Online shows create an efficiency in the ordering process which will remain in our best practices as a lot of trade shows are now operating in a hybrid fashion,” Goeppner said. “This allows us to prepare our orders online before the physical show and realign our efforts at the show toward finding new products and networking with vendors, manufac turers, and other retailers. I’m grateful that we can go back to in-person shows because I missed the networking inter actions and being able to touch, feel and experience products in person. Just like our customers like to be able to touch, feel and experience the product before the purchase, we like to do the same thing.”JeffTawson, Business Analyst Season al and General Merchandise at Raley’s said he “misses the person-to-person interaction. Virtual is great for a quick meeting but nothing replaces a live show.”“Tradeshows are best when attended in person as you have the opportunity to view all booths that you might inad vertently skip virtually by description alone,” Aguilera with Costco said. Wasyliw with Ren’s Pet Depot be lieves the pet industry can benefit from conducting business in person and vir tually; however, the mode of communi cation has to best fit the situation.

“We have always held the thought that in-person shows are imperative for us,” said Green Coast Pet co-Found er Mike Bateman. “We love seeing and meeting our customers in person and not hiding behind a computer screen. We want to be out and with them and listen to them. So, in that respect, our perspective hasn’t changed at all. We have learned, however, that our brand sees very little value at all in virtual shows. We have been looking forward to getting back to seeing people in per son for a very long time.”

Starting September 1, 2022, dog lovers can join in selecting the first-ever Dog Chow Visible Impact Award winner by voting on the selected finalists at DogChow.com/ service. For every vote, Dog Chow will donate $5 to the Association of Service Dog Providers for Military Veterans (up to $75,000 total) to help train more PTSD service dogs at no cost to veterans. Additionally, the winning dog’s veteran will receive a $10,000 cash prize and $25,000 for the organization that trained the service dog.

Purina Dog Chow has proudly supported the military since its founding almost 100 years ago, and the strong commitment to service members continues today. In fact, Dog Chow is celebrating five years of its Service Dog Salute campaign, which highlights the life-changing benefits that service dogs provide to veterans experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Approximately 3.5 million military veterans suffer from PTSD, and while service dogs are demonstrated to reduce the severity of PTSD symptoms and suicidal behaviors, only one in 100 of those in need who seek a service dog receive one each year. Dog Chow is on a mission to help. This year marks $1 million in donations from Dog Chow to service dog organizations since the start of the Service Dog Salute program in 2018. These donations help support the care and training of more service dogs for veterans with PTSD. PTSD service dogs are NOT the same as emotional support, therapy or companion dogs. Like service dogs for the blind, deaf and physically disabled, PTSD service dogs for veterans must be specifically trained to help their handler perform tasks they cannot otherwise perform on their own. As part of this year’s Service Dog Salute program, Dog Chow has launched its first-ever Visible Impact Award in partnership with the Association of Service Dog Providers for Military Veterans. The award celebrates the remarkable impact PTSD service dogs have on veterans’ daily lives and recognizes these outstanding service dogs and the organizations that trained them.

The Dog Chow Visible Impact Award complements ongoing research that shows most veterans with trained service dogs exhibit lower symptoms of PTSD, reduced depression and increased social participation compared to those who utilize more traditional clinical care for PTSD alone. Dog Chow and Purina associates are working to bring more awareness and support to veteran service dogs. Soon, you’ll see our mission highlighted on every bag of Dog Chow that arrives in retail stores.

How would you characterize the state of the pet industry? How have circumstances during the last two years changed the industry? Prior to SuperZoo in August 2021, it had been two years since the pet com munity was last together. As with any interruption, the pandemic brought about dramatic challenges as well as op portunities for innovation. Since then, the pet community has experienced seismic shifts including changing con sumer buying habits, supply chain dis ruptions, new consumer demographics and innovative startups—all of which have altered pet retail. The work from home lifestyle has also brought on a new generation of pet owners. Many young professionals welcomed animals into their homes over the past year. These younger own ers shop for products that match their personal needs and look for organic and healthy products. How does the industry compare now to where it was in 2021? A year ago, we gathered at SuperZoo for the first time since the pandemic started and realized even more how im portant it is to be able to talk business face-to-face; make buying selections based on products that retailers can touch, feel and test; and network with the community while learning at in-per son education sessions. The ability to do that has resulted in a stronger year for our retailers, particularly those with brick-and-mortar locations. In just a few short weeks, we will bring the industry together again at SuperZoo 2022 to unite around solving challenges (like supply chain issues) and to work together to lead the charge in pet retail.

IN CONVERSATION

PG 60 / PET INSIGHT

How is the WPA supporting its members in efforts to not only move the industry forward but also return to a sense of normalcy? WPA is dedicated to serving the pet community all year long. That’s why we developed WPA365, an online platform where users have access to industry research and consumer insights, edu cational resources and courses and a digital pet product marketplace. These curated resources are designed to help pet retailers stay on top of the latest trends, grow their businesses, and stay relevant in a rapidly changing world. Regular industry updates, tips and rec ommendations for pet professionals are also shared in the WPA News blog. Recent articles have covered employee retention, supply chain issues and SEO for pet stores. What’s the next phase of growth for the industry? Do you see the same channels expanding, or a new area of potential? As a whole, the industry represents more than $100 billion per year. Greater than 2/3 of households have pets! The substantial market growth seen from 2020 to 2021 shows no signs of slow ing, with an increase of another $100 billion expected by 2027. Throughout the pandemic, and even before, people were spending more time with their pets and seeking prod ucts to help them thrive. Entrepreneurs eagerly answered that need with new products and new product categories. Looking at the SuperZoo show floor, it’s clear that pet wellness is an ongoing trend and extends beyond just profit. Companies are listening to consumers and assessing needs to enhance the lives of pets, building an even stronger bond between people and their pets. Interest in premium foods, special ty diets and supplements continue to grow, but it doesn’t stop there. Inno vative thinking and consumer demand have produced entirely new categories of pet wellness products, including pet wipes, cat toothpaste and creative hab itats and toys. Changing environments are also contributing to supplement formulation, such as equine electrolyte supplements to maintain equilibrium in the summer heat. We are also see ing more CBD products to aid anxious or arthritic pets; they are flying off the shelves. Much like the demand for hu man CBD options, there are now CBD pet products designed to alleviate pain due to arthritis, age or other chronic conditions.Likemost industries, IoT and AI have made their way into pet and it’s often very much about convenience. These in clude the latest tech products like smart litter boxes, microchip pet doors and fit ness tracking apps. We see an ongoing interest in these types of products and expect they will continue to be important to pet owners for years to come. What are some of the initiatives and educational outreach the WPA has been working on in 2022 to advocate for and support its members and the overall industry? What are some results you can share? As a not-for-profit organization, we’re committed to giving back to the broader pet community through the WPA Good Works program, which provides fund ing for organizations that are working for the good of pets and the pet indus try. The WPA Good Works program has donated more than $6 million in the last decade to organizations including the Pet Advocacy Network, the Human Animal Bond Research Institute, the Pet Sustainability Coalition, the National Animal Interest Alliance and more. From a layout and accessibility standpoint, what innovations are in store this year for attendees? As the largest and most compre hensive assortment of pet products in North America, we are excited to show case more than 1,000 exhibitors on the 300,000 sq. ft show floor. This year, Su perZoo will feature a curated show floor with six specialty areas to make it easy for attendees to find their way to the people and products that interest them the most. We’ve mapped out the show floor into “neighborhoods” that include Nat ural and Health; Specialty and Lifestyle; Farm and Feed, Aquatics, Reptiles, and Small Animals; Groomer’s Marketplace; and Emerging Brands—which show cases early-stage pet startups with in

What are the most pressing issues WPA members are addressing? How is the WPA supporting them? Few industries are immune from the continued impact of the pandemic and the pet retail industry is no exception. From staffing issues and ingredient shortages to long lead times and price increases, manufacturers and retailers continue to experience challenges. Whether supply chain issues persist from continued pandemic fallout or rising fuel costs, pet retailers should anticipate some disruption and take the steps needed to mitigate it. Ultimately, pet retailers should strive to be flexible and resourceful when encountering pet supply shortages. WPA is committed to helping pet retailers navigate these challenges. Educational opportunities and action able content are available within the WPA365 platform, and, of course, the SuperZoo show floor has been curated with a variety of exhibitors that have product available now. We’ve also cov ered some of these topics on the WPA News blog, with articles such as “Pet Supply Shortage: 6 Ways to Mitigate Supply Chain Issues” and “Pet Store Employee Retention: 5 Steps to Find ing and Keeping Quality Workers” that include recommendations from pet in dustry leaders. What is on the WPA’s mind as you prepare for this year’s SuperZoo? SuperZoo is the pet industry’s largest and most comprehensive trade show in North America, and this year our goal is to continue to deliver an easy-to-shop show floor, rich education offerings and an energizing, fun-filled atmosphere for pet professionals to connect with their community. At SuperZoo, pet professionals have access to new con tent and products including the most comprehensive collection of upcoming trends, educational offerings and the latest grooming techniques that will help them stand out from the competi tion. This year, SuperZoo will welcome thousands of attendees including more than 70 big-name buyers and more than 1,000 exhibitors on the 300,000 sq. ft. show floor. More than 800 new prod ucts will make their debut at SuperZoo this year. In the weeks leading up to SuperZoo, how should show participants —exhibitors and retailers alike— prioritize their time to ensure they get the most out of the resources and opportunities that only SuperZoo provides? With more than 800 product debuts and 1,000 exhibitors at SuperZoo this year, it’s critical to plan ahead. One of the most important things to prepare before walking the show floor is to identify your must-see vendors and key clients. Download the SuperZoo app to review the exhibitor list and note the brands that are most popular in your business. It also helps to take time to review the floor plans and chart a path through the different sections. To take full advantage of all SuperZoo has to of fer, add an education pass to your regis tration and review the list of more than 70 educational sessions. The full sched ule is available in the SuperZoo app.

Vic Mason, President, World Pet Association r From Pg. 60

How have the WPA’s and its members’ perspective on in-person tradeshows changed? Pet industry professionals have a se rious passion for their business and the community, which is why it was so im portant to bring everyone back togeth er for SuperZoo 2021 after being apart for so long. And we are excited to do it again this year! Every year, attendees tell us they see SuperZoo as a source of knowledge, calling SuperZoo critically important, necessary and integral. Peo ple are looking to do business in per son. Connections matter and building relationships in a B2B setting has been difficult in a virtual world. We know our retailers are excited to meet face-to-face with their manufacturer reps one again. What do you see coming for the industry in the rest of 2022? The pet industry is booming and evolving due to new products entering the market, changing consumer atti tudes, etc. We expect that steady growth to continue and bring new opportuni ties along with it. Not that there won’t be challenges, but we anticipate that the rest of 2022 will bring exciting possibil ities and innovations for the global pet industry. Since you took over as President of the WPA, what accomplishments are you most proud of? Having the opportunity to help guide this incredible organization at such a transformative time for our industry has been a deeply rewarding experi ence. I’m especially proud of WPA’s ability to bring live shows back to our community. This year’s SuperZoo will be the biggest ever, and this would not be possible without the solid vision of our board and staff to keep everyone focused on the value of live shows and the importance of SuperZoo. In-person events unite our community, and we’re excited to continue taking SuperZoo to the next level. Looking back at your tenure in the pet industry, what differences are most striking to you today, compared to when you started out? Today’s pet industry is exceptional ly polished and professional, from the ways in which products are packaged to store employees’ level of knowl edge about pet health and wellness. Of course, the role of technology is also very different than it was years ago— products are much more high-tech, and so is the shopping experience. Now cus tomers can order online and pick their items up curbside in almost no time. It’s also been fascinating to witness the changes in how products get to market. Now there are many different paths for product production, companies can drum up interest through social media and get feedback quickly, then evolve their products based on that feedback. This industry is constantly changing, and I look forward to seeing what hap pens next.
