Las Vegas

The city of Las Vegas has been coined one of the most pet friendly cities in the US for several reasons, many of which pertain to the city’s lifestyle, walkability, the greater area surrounding Las Vegas and the various ways it has taken pets, dogs specifically, into accountability.

While tourism is one of the many things one might think of upon hearing "Las Vegas," the area has a significantly high number of pets living in the city. Even more noteworthy, the state of Nevada was ranked as a leader for most devoted dog owners nationwide, according to a study conducted last year.

James said. Although the record setting heat in Las Vegas this summer has been hard on pets and their owners, Lance’s Aquarium recognized a positive within the impossibly high degrees.

Alongside this, Las Vegas was also ranked in the top 10 cities for the most expensive city to have a dog, which comes as no surprise as the humanization of pets has raised the bar on the quality of life dogs now lead. Specifically, this is due to pet owners’ increasing devotion and desire to provide not only quality but also quantity of years to their pets. Consistently, pet owners have made it known they are willing to spend more on their pets than themselves as well as pay the extra costs for higher quality products and ingredients.

The Las Vegas market is home to 65 pet stores. The top three retailers: PetSmart, Petco and Bogart's Bone-Appetit, make up 43 percent of the market’s share, while 29.2 percent is made up of single-store retailers.

First-Hand Experiences

Many retailers within the greater Las Vegas market have thrived in the pet specialty business for several years. These local businesses are the heart of the industry. As online shopping becomes more and more mainstream, these smaller shops rely on the average consumer who enjoys shopping in stores where they can feel, see and test out their pet products along with getting advice from their local retailer.

“I enjoy being able to carry and suggest food that helps dogs, not just making money,” said Meghan Joachin, Owner of House of Paws. “The hardest thing is competing with online services like Chewy and Amazon. The opportunities

are endless though. I get to have a talk with a lot of pet parents in Las Vegas about boosting their dog food with fresh foods and supplements. I feel like if I can get one pet parent a day to change the way they feed their dog; it’s a win.”

Las Vegas by Day and by Night

“The average person will walk out of the store with a bag and a tank un-

“Unlike many stores, I actually work my store five to six days a week,” said Joachin. “Customers are more than just customers; they are family and I treat them as such. I think being super honest with people about nutrition and carrying every single food brand has led me to my success. I carry what I have found works with dogs, not just what is popular today. Educating pet parents means more to me than making a sale. I research all food before bringing it in. Nothing here has ever been recalled or is owned by big corporations. All family-owned and operated. Example, I used to make a lot of money selling Champion Petfoods and ORIJEN. Then they were bought out by Mars, and I cleared my shelves and donated all the food to a local rescue. I also have certifications for pet nutrition and homeopathy, as well as vet food coaching.”

Whitney James, Founder and Owner of Whitney's Paw-Lished Pets’ mentioned that reliability is a factor that allowed her business to grow and thrive.

“There are several mobile groomers that have come and gone. Some that just don’t show up without calling or notifying the clients. Making a name for yourself as being reliable and doing good work is of the utmost importance,”

der their other arm,” said Lance Rettig, Owner and Founder of Lance’s Aquarium. “You try to preach to people there’s a right way to do things, but people want convenience. I have noticed that there are people within the Las Vegas area who are willing to put in the work though. We hit 116 degrees recently and people who have saltwater tanks are buying a chiller, which looks like a window air conditioner, and you need to put it on the floor next to the tank and you need a pump in the tank, and it keeps the water at an acceptable temperature. Some people might not like the way it looks, but it’s more difficult if you don’t get it.”

Alicia’s Mobile Dog & Cat Grooming has the experience and expertise to thrive in the market.

“Just saying that you have 35 years of experience and having the knowledge to back it up is one thing,” said Owner Alicia Hull. “When I say that, I mean I have the paperwork to prove it. I am a master certified cat and dog groomer, CTR certified, First Aid certified and

salon certified. Additionally, I am color certified and bather certified. These certifications all mean something, especially in an industry that isn’t regulated by licenses. You don’t have to go to a grooming school to enter this field; anyone can claim to be a groomer. But to truly excel, you need to show your credentials and back them up. Grooming is an art, like tattooing—it’s not something everyone can do well. In my 35 years of doing this, I have encountered a few of those bad eggs, unfortunately. Especially here in Nevada, where it is such a transient state. This makes it even more important to maintain high standards and demonstrate genuine expertise.”

Recent News

According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the city was ranked as one of the best places to own a pet, but this, according to some rescues and city officials, comes as a surprise. As the city has been included on various reports and rankings regarding its pet friendliness and devotion to animals in general, there are those within the city who are seeing things from a different lens, one that might not be deemed as positive.

“From the rescue side, I can’t see how we rank anywhere but in the crisis zone for dogs, unless we are just talking about the people who can afford whatever they need,” Christy Stevens, Executive Director of Hearts Alive Village told Las Vegas Review Journal. “The landscape of animal welfare is flawed to the point of neglect in this city. For a city of our size, we should have at least two more access points for sheltering and services.”

Although there seems to be a need for better regulations, the city recently voted against ordinances that might have helped this situation and voted for some that might not be seen as beneficial, which might come as a cost later on, according to Mayor Carolyn Goodman.

In January 2023, the Las Vegas city council voted to increase the number of pets residents can own in their household. Residents can now own up to six dogs and cats without needing a permit, which is an increase from the original four previously permitted.

Goodman actually voted in opposition to the order, specifically pointing out that people who live in smaller apartments or areas shouldn’t have that many pets.

“We want to get the dogs and cats and animals off the street into care. That’s the most important piece here,” Goodman told the Nevada Current. “So, I feel terrible because I’m all for it, giving us all the right to have more animals, but not in a studio apartment that I have, and I own, and there are no regulations on that building.”

Alongside this ordinance, the council addressed the increase in strays around the city, stating it had become “overrun.”

“We all love our animals. But having also spoken with a lot of sports fans these past years that are coming and moving into Nevada because of our major league sports, I have heard from several directly that they have brought animals into our state that they can’t handle, and they just let them go here in Southern Nevada, which increases the number of dogs,” Goodman said.

In an effort to combat this, the city announced in October 2023, that all pets four months or older are required by law to be microchipped, which in turn might help in a small way with the stray problem as there is a way to tie pets back to the owners who abandoned them. This ordinance goes into effect on Aug. 1, 2024, and is specifically looking at breeders that sell to pet shops, making it a requirement that they microchip pets before transferring them to the shop.

Although the city is working on the best methods to protect abandoned animals and their overall welfare at times, Las Vegas has been a home to several animal lovers and those within the industry who seek to provide for these animals.

SUPERZOO

While Las Vegas may be in the middle of working toward ridding itself of the negatives, there are so many positive attributes the city brings to the industry, specifically looking at SUPERZOO. SUPERZOO is one of the largest pet industry tradeshows, started by the World Pet Association in 1950. The tradeshow takes place every year in Las Vegas for an overwhelming number of

reasons. Many of these reasons are best addressed through first-hand accounts of industry leaders who recognize the impact and importance the location has on the tradeshow.

“This will be CANOPHERA's fourth year as an exhibitor at SUPERZOO,” said Rob Johnson, President/Managing Partner with CANOPHERA. “SUPERZOO provides a much greater spectrum of retailers than other shows, and we greatly value the opportunities and networking inroads it provides. Another opportunity is SUPERZOO caters to the Midwest and West Coast retailers, plus Las Vegas provides an attraction for all different people to have a mini vacation plus a work event.”

“SUPERZOO is really unique and awesome because it’s kind of like a Wild, Wild West; it’s really fun!” said Mika Wheelwright, Founder of Fidobiotics. “There’s a lot of energy at the show because I think people get the fun vibe of Vegas. You get a lot of people that want to come, and they’re determined and want to see the new, the exhibitors and what they have to offer. Vegas brings a lot of people to SUPERZOO; just the destination aspect of it. It’s easy to fly in, to fly out; hotels, food, all of it.”

“ZIWI has been attending SUPERZOO nearly as long as we have had a North American presence—since 2008!” said Jessica Krueger, Senior Marketing Manager of ZIWI. “SUPERZOO is loved by brands and industry professionals alike for its unique networking opportunities, easy access being conveniently located in Las Vegas, and the countless sponsorship opportunities available to highlight new products, connecting with partners, and highlighting your brand! It has a great way of bringing together decision makers into one central place year after year.”

The greater Las Vegas area has several gems within the market that have helped create a haven for industry leaders, pet specialty retailers, pets and their owners to thrive and push forward regardless of the circumstances that can come to light. The city has proven it's what you do with what you have that counts. What the city does have is devoted pet parents, retailers, city officials and shelters that keep pets at the forefront.
