NSK Peterlee’s Luke Reeves at Durham Oktoberfest.
EAST DURHAM engineering apprentice is showing ‘em
HOW IT’S DONE Award-winning and inventive apprentice Luke Reeves put on an inspirational display at the recent Durham Oktoberfest event, which took place at the Xcel Centre in Newton Aycliffe in October. Luke, 24, is a mechanical apprentice at NSK Peterlee. Along with his ‘thread checker’ device, he was one of the stars of the show at the event, which showcases the county’s engineering and manufacturing businesses. The invention was on display as part of Oktoberfest’s Education Zone and Luke was on hand to demonstrate how the machine works to the hundreds of people who attended the exhibition. Luke was delighted with the response he got
on the day, and said: “I’m over the moon with the feedback I got from people, it’s been great. “This is why I wanted to be an engineer, I wanted to create things that are going to make improvements to processes, which is exactly what this machine has done.” Luke spotted an improvement gap in processes at NSK, so came up with the idea of the ‘thread checker’. It means that instead of metal threads on parts
being checked by hand, they are now checked by his machine, shaving valuable minutes off operating times. The finished product is currently in use at NSK and records show it’s saving 30 minutes on inspections per shift. The creation has scooped the rising star two prestigious accolades, including Project of the Year and Engineer of the Future at Hartlepool College of Further Education’s Engineering Awards. He was also awarded £600.
