The Social Foundations Reader is intended for undergraduate and graduate students in introductory foundations of education classes. Unlike other readers, which often provide a generic and conservative perspective, this book offers a broad yet critical view of issues in education. It encourages students to consider the roles of critical theory and social justice in creating school environments that address equity and diversity. This book presents a different lens on twenty-first-century schools, considering the perspectives of parents, teachers, students and communities. The reader is exposed to a wide range of scholarship. Contested topics in teaching, learning and leading in contemporary public schools are examined within a context where addressing fundamental questions guiding meaningful school reform is essential for educators.
Yolanda Medina is Professor and Chair of the Teacher Education Department at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, City University of New York. Dr. Medina has authored and co-authored several publications and is a co-editor of the Critical Studies of Latinx in the Americas book series published by Peter Lang.
Eleanor J. Blair is a professor at Western Carolina University, where she teaches foundations of education courses. She is a frequent presenter at regional, national, and international conferences and has several publications that explore teaching, learning, and leadership in contemporary schools.

We live in a world increasingly defined by systemic, deepening and compounding crises. They threaten not only future human existence but also the planetary web-of-life. With the help of academics, creative practitioners and activists, this book explores some of the innovative ways in which different media, communicative fields, and creative practices are seeking to make a difference. From different forms of journalism and participative documentary to climate photography and ecosophical film; from radical theatre, eco-literature and eco-art to green festivals, popular music and immersive museums; and from journalism training in the climate emergency and sustainability education to communicating with ‘whole intelligence’ and ‘integrated intelligence’ beyond AI (artificial intelligence). This panoramic approach enables us to see how diverse communicative fields are engaging with some of the most critical concerns of our times – and what can be learned, shared and developed further in the challenging years ahead.

Communication accommodation theory (CAT) explains and predicts when, how, and why different people engage in conversational adjustments with others (or not), as well as recipients’ responses to them. CAT has been studied with many methods across numerous languages, cultures, groups, disciplines, and contexts as well as with non-human species. This, besides journal special issues, is the third book devoted to CAT advancements.
A 2023 journal issue of Language Sciences commemorated the theory’s 50th anniversary. Yet since, a plethora of studies and theoretical refinements have exploded onto the scene. Herein, these include sojourning, AI, safety in industries, policing crowd protests, metacognition, biological underpinnings of CAT, underscoring the timeliness of this volume. With new vistas, this volume enhances CAT’s status as, arguably, the most robust framework for understanding interpersonal and intergroup adjustments in communication across new technologies.

It’s Not Rocket Science! Designing Meaningful Learning Experiences in the Elementary Classroom is a hands-on manual that streamlines the curriculum design process by utilizing a fourstep approach: deconstructing, reconstructing, lesson planning, and assessing. Grounded in a theoretical framework that all students, regardless of background, are entitled to high quality learning, this step-by-step method allows teachers to create structured, cohesive units of study that impact students’ lives, while at the same time providing the opportunity for teachers to thoroughly analyse a content area before creating learning experiences. Included are concrete examples, strategies and templates that help educators create active and engaging lessons for students.

“In It’s Not Rocket Science! Designing Meaningful Learning Experiences in the Elementary Classroom Robert Blake and Lisa Trattner pare down the planning process to five central questions that need to be internalized by teachers, educational leaders, all who engage in the educational process, even including students. Far too much is wasted by the drudgery of requiring educators to pursue endless hours of writing lesson plans, only to find that they don’t meet the ever-changing needs of educational situations. Like living a good philosophy of life, embodying these questions nourishes seeds of imagination and improvisation that enrich teaching and learning moment by moment by enhancing the meaning that students experience. Although it may not be as technically sophisticated as rocket science, it may be more important. It collaboratively reconstructs the next (and hopefully better) generations of human beings!”
- William H. Schubert. Professor Emeritus of Curriculum and Instruction, and Former University Scholar, University of Illinois Chicago

Knowledge exchange is a unique cultural and cognitive ability of humans, enabling cooperative action, expanding knowledge through shared experience. Andreas Rupp takes us through the basics of communication and provides examples for educators of effective lecturing skills and interactive approaches to help students better absorb, process, and retain information. Finally, the author presents his interactive and adaptive teaching of subject content training program, which combines teaching and learning methods to consider and mitigate for the myriad and varied abilities and skill levels of learners across our classrooms and lecture halls.

This book comprises a series of engaging and provocative essays directed towards an optimistic consideration of hope, informed by practices that can be nurtured in school education and other sites of learning and are associated with courage and wisdom. Written from a range of perspectives and experiences each essay brings to the reader a positive orientation; one that is too often lacking in today’s global era in which much attention is paid to simplified solutions, often unfit for purpose, and which engender a spirit of despondency and demoralization.
Attention has been directed to the essay form as a departure from the academic chapter or journal article, with an expectation that the book will be of value beyond the walls of academia. […] Click here to read more.

“In this volume, Groundwater-Smith brings together a diverse group of essayists willing to confront the future of education in what are globally, very difficult times. Taking their arguments seriously, Groundwater-Smith argues, demands both courage and hope on our behalf, but it also holds out the promise of greater wisdom. This is an important and challenging book; a must read for anyone concerned about the future of education in our troubling times.”
- John Furlong, Emeritus Professor of Education, University of Oxford
“This volume is a provocative intellectual tonic whose intent is to reshape and reframe education practice in universities, schools and their communities. As Stephen Kemmis argues “education happens everywhere”, it is ubiquitous. Groundwater-Smith has indeed engaged in a thorough experiment, the contributions of which provide validation for change and the evidence of successful practice to achieve it. It is not an easy book, but certainly a powerful one to reinstate hope and courage in the broader education project.”

This book focuses on the curricular life of teachers at one high school, and features work by nine of those teachers from a variety of fields who have pursued doctoral degrees and remained at the school. These colleagues have helped produce a staff of «teacher students» across the campus, people who are committed to teaching and also committed to learning, to approaching life and the world as something to study, to recognizing that being students ourselves is an excellent way to guide the students in our classrooms. The authors in this book explore the ways they live in a «liminal,» or «between» space in the high school—not quite a high school teacher, not quite a professor, but a «liminal scholar» who can participate effectively in multiple curricular spaces, […] Click here to read more.
In an era dominated by technological advancement and standardization, phenomenology offers crucial insights into teacher and learner experiences. This book explores how phenomenological perspectives can transform educational understanding, particularly in African contexts. The contributors examine phenomenology’s intersection with various educational dimensions, from music to artificial intelligence. Moving beyond empiricist-rationalist frameworks, they illuminate lived experiences in educational settings, revealing hidden classroom dynamics and offering fresh perspectives on challenges. The work combines theory with practice, addressing positionality, AI’s impact, and institutional transformation, with a focus on African education’s unique challenges. […] Click here to read more.

Reflective Writing for Empowerment and Healing
Nathaniel Norment, Jr., Kipton E. Jensen, Robert Edwards (eds.)
This book examines the contemporary relevance of the EastWest ecology of thought and practice present in and inspired by the educational perspectives of American philosopher John Dewey (1859–1952) and the Japanese progenitors of sōka, or “value-creating,” approaches to life and education and the Soka organizations and institutions they advanced embodying and memorializing these in name and ethos: Makiguchi Tsunesaburō (1871–1944), Toda Jōsei (1900–1958), and Ikeda Daisaku (1928–2023).

To offer a comprehensive overview of the current and perceived future state of sports journalism competition, this book draws on insight from 100 qualitative interviews with sportswriters working within five unique subsets of written content (daily newspapers, team-run media, The Athletic, Substack newsletters, and SB Nation blogging). Using four main communication concepts (gatekeeping, niche gratification, diffusion of innovations, and journalistic boundary work) as the guiding framework, this book examines how various disseminators of written sports information are able to coexist in the modern sports journalism ecosystem by catering to the niche.

This book examines how Hip Hop, far beyond its musical aspects, represents a powerful force for social, economic, and cultural transformation in America. Through detailed analysis and real-world examples, it demonstrates how Hip Hop’s innovative spirit and collaborative mindset are already improving fields like education, healthcare, technology, and community building. The author challenges mainstream media’s narrow portrayal of Hip Hop culture and argues that its methodologies and philosophies—born from marginalized communities’ resilience and creativity—offer solutions to some of America’s most pressing problems, including economic inequality, political dysfunction, and racial division. By documenting successful applications of Hip Hop principles across various sectors and advocating for broader recognition of Hip Hop’s transformative potential, the book presents a compelling case for embracing this cultural movement as a catalyst for positive societal change.

Disability and the University: A Disabled Students’ Manifesto, 2nd edition is a guide to what students with disabilities need to know about attending university, as well as to the essential supports and rights universities should provide. Each chapter represents a benchmark for students to follow as they travel through the institution, and lays clear what they should expect in the post Covid world.
Written by those who have traversed the terrain of higher education, this book is not about disabled students, but instead is a manifesto, a call for change, a call to action. It is guide book, blueprint, and tool for both students and universities.

The 2020 United States presidential election was a pivotal moment, marked by a global pandemic, economic turmoil, and civil unrest. Amid these challenges, citizen engagement surged, driving record media ratings and the highest voter turnout since 1900. This book examines how these events reshaped political communication and the impact of social and cultural divides on the electoral process. Through an analysis of digital and social media’s role in political discourse, the book explores how platforms like X/Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok altered civic engagement, influencing voter behavior and public perceptions. It also addresses misinformation, partisan polarization, and media consumption, showing how these factors fueled digital advocacy and contributed to the January 6th Capitol attack. By unpacking the complex intersection of digital communication and democracy, this work provides critical insights into the evolving landscape of U.S. politics and implications for future elections.

All are upper level undergraduate and graduate level students in both media and political science departments.

At a time when education is becoming ever more standardized and technocratic, there is renewed interest in the interpersonal, even intimate phenomenon of pedagogical tact. Some speak of a renaissance. Like tact in general, pedagogical tact is a ready and delicate sense of what is fitting and proper in dealing with others. In pedagogy, these «others» are typically children, youth, or students, and tact is exercised as a kind of disposition that is oriented to the learners’ maturation and eventual autonomy. It takes the form of a subtle but active discernment that arises when theories and prescriptions simply do not help.
This edited collection, the first to appear on pedagogical tact in English, includes contributions from several authors who are a part of the renaissance of this area. […] Click here to read more.
Internationally, the practicum is a cornerstone of initial teacher education in preparing pre-service teachers to enter the teaching profession. This edited collection expands theory and research in pedagogies of practicum by examining different ways teacher education programs across the globe experienced, modified, and innovated the practicum in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. What have we learned about the limitations of traditional in-school, brick-and-mortar practicum, and to what extent were these limitations challenged by pandemic shift s? Contributions from researchers, program chairs, teacher educators, field coordinators, and faculty supervisors address themes such as virtual practicum programming, emerging technologies that enhance the student teaching experience, and ways to support preservice teachers’ well-being during practicum sessions. Sex and gender are interconnected, conflated, different, and complex. Arguably, there is no cultural arena more affected by the complexity of sex/gender than sport, where the presumed need for a male/female binary is personalized, medicalized, and politicized. Gender Defenders of the Sport Binary considers how medical, policy, and media discourses shape understanding of nonbinary athletes, and more broadly cultural understandings of gender as chosen and sex as biologically measurable.
Tracing discourse across more than 100 years of media coverage, decades of medical debate, and overlapping sport regulatory policies, this book considers how the force of cisgender ideology creates a singular narrative centered on fairness that dominates transgender and intersex women and erases them from elite sport. This book traces the influence of powerful contexts such as language and masculinity in constructing boundaries around who can and cannot fit in women’s sport.
“In Gender Defenders of the Sport Binary, Bell and Osborne offer a compelling and incisive critique of how sport, medicine, and the media converge to police gender under the guise of fairness. In a time of global debates on gender and athleticism, this thought-provoking book unpacks the exclusionary frameworks that elite sport uses to marginalize transgender and intersex athletes, revealing the deep entanglements between gender ideology and power. Using meticulous research and sharp analysis, the authors challenge us to reconsider the boundaries of inclusion, presenting a vital call to reimagine sport as a space where diversity is not disciplined, but celebrated.”
- Anna Baeth, Ph.D., Director of Research, Athlete Ally
“We see this book being useful in Communications and Sport Management courses focused on the intersection of sport media and social issues. It will also be targeted toward courses across a wide array of disciplines including History, Anthropology, and Rhetorical Studies, where classes often relate to sport and gender.

Since the turn of the millennium, stories about young people with mystical abilities have enjoyed tremendous popularity. This volume is the first collection of essays to posit that such stories form a distinct teen- and young-adult-oriented genre, characterized by tales in which young people use ancient magic—not modern science—to solve problems and save the world. Scholars explore the cultural implications of this phenomenon, considering how media’s discourses about youthful gods, witches, fairies, and other magical beings address social change, youth, and modern identities. By examining stories whose protagonists stand at a crossroads between identities and states of being—human and not-quite-human, child and adult, mundane world and mythic world, old millennium and new—the volume invites readers to contemplate the cultural significance of the persistent mediated fantasy of magical youth.
This book would likely find a readership among scholars and students of representation – especially gender, but also other demographics. The focus on textual analysis suggests it may be appealing to those taking and instructing Anglophone humanities college courses, especially those with left-liberal-leaning syllabi in the field of Film & TV Studies, Media Studies, and Gender Studies; and those focused on young people’s relationships to the media.

Television serial fiction is one of the most popular cultural products around the world today, and there is much indirect evidence that its stories influence the understanding of those who watch and enjoy it. All the chapters gathered in this collection address the idea that the specific aesthetic and narrative properties of television seriality contribute to distinct ways of conveying cognitive impact in a broad sense: from content learning, to reflection on social and philosophical issues, to character engagement and emotional reactions. The Cognitive Impact of Contemporary Television Series goes through some of the thematic constants of the last decade of television seriality, such as dystopia, coming-of-age or metaphysical drama, making panoramic views and delving into specific case studies, like The Purge, The End of the F***ing World and Undone, among many others. This book will be of interest to graduate students and scholars working in television studies, as well as in film studies, cognitive media theory, media psychology, and aesthetics.
“Given that each chapter provides illuminating summaries of established theories (on character engagement, aesthetics of seriality, emotions, narratology, point of view etc.) relevant in this domain, the book can be offered to those who are starting to engage with TV series as a field of study. However, since each chapter also puts forward new and original ideas, and novel ways of approaching the works taken as case studies, I trust the book will be most interesting to scholars who are already established in this field, and who can more critically engage with the chapters. The book should also be of interest to scholars working in narrative art, cultural studies, popular art and fandom.”

Intercultural communication scholars have done important work tracing how the legacies of colonialism continue to structure our world. However, missing from this corpus is sustained attention to (North American) Indigeneity and its repression under settler colonialism as foundationally linked to contemporary imperialisms and Euro-American domination. Unsettling intercultural communication brings together essays by Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors that make a strong case to center Indigeneity and, by extension, settler-colonialism as core analytics that can transform the field. Drawing upon the insights of critical Indigenous studies and settler-colonial studies, the contributors approach Indigeneity not as an additive but central concept that demands thorough engagement by intercultural communication scholars if we are to make sense of the unequal and violence-ridden world that we live in. In doing so, they open some of the core intercultural concepts to examination.
Ideal for courses in Advanced Intercultural Communication, Communication Theory.
The language utilized within health communication encounters has a direct influence on our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. In many ways, the difficulties associated with efficient, effective, and competent communication within the health care context can be the major determinant of successful health outcomes. Further, while many of the interactional contexts within health are intergenerational, communication encounters are challenged by ageism and a lack of appropriate intergenerational communication skills. While it may seem obvious that the nature of human interaction is constantly changing as individuals develop throughout their lives, few theoretical or empirical investigators within the general disciplines of Communication, Language, and Social Psychology ground their research within a life span developmental perspective. This book addresses communication events within health care institutions from a theory-rich, methodologically varied, and social action/positive communication orientation. Chapters in this book examine interpersonal relationships, the social environment, and culture to develop beneficial communication practices for healthcare professionals, individuals, families, and communities.

This book discusses transformative approaches to psychology, social work, and education. Addressing these disciplines’ entanglements with oppressive structures, the contributors aim to reconcile individual support with social justice. In current times of accelerating crises, professionals often see only few opportunities to influence the conditions of their work. Thinking and acting beyond adaptation, authors from seven countries provide inspiration for researchers, practitioners, and students who want to be more than brokers of a broken system.
Cultural-Historical Theory is a powerful framework that can depict the dynamic of individual minds in society. Building on this, Critical Psychology has formulated an elaborate theory of human agency. Linking individual and social change needs such theorizing. This volume is a rare intellectual exchange by scholars drawing on these traditions. An alternative to both control science and abstract criticism, it inquires the capacity to act. This book presents StrataPlay, an innovative post-qualitative methodology that blends academic inquiry with playful, narrative-driven gameplay. Grounded in posthumanism, postqualitative research, and psychoanalytic theories, the book guides readers through a series of game-like challenges designed to explore fluid, fragmented identities, the intersections of power and autonomy, and the absurdities of modern academia. Each chapter invites readers to step into immersive worlds where they confront complex philosophical questions through narrative and metaphor. By offering an interactive approach to knowledge creation, this book pushes boundaries and encourages a dynamic and ever-evolving relationship between theory, identity, and storytelling.
What is research and who is a researcher? Why engage in research and what is the value of research? Paradigms of Research for the 21st Century explores multiple questions relating to the nature and process of educational research. The book offers an insightful and detailed account of Western and non-Western philosophical traditions and perspectives on reality, knowledge, and values. These accounts form a paradigm… a system of inquiry, a model, a way of knowing. Empirical, analytic, pragmatic, interpretive, critical, poststructuralist, and transcendental paradigms are distinguished as alternatives to a quantitative-qualitative typology of paradigms in educational research. This book is suitable for graduate courses in the theoretical foundations of research and research methodology. It features new chapters which include examples of doctoral students’ research projects illustrating various systems of inquiry.

In education, as in other areas of human endeavour, we often strive for what is easiest, least troubling and most certain. We want clear, definitive answers to our questions. Ambiguity and complexity may be viewed as impediments to our progress as learners, and doubt will sometimes be portrayed as a sign of weakness. This book pushes back against these tendencies. Informed by the work of Giacomo Leopardi, Arthur Schopenhauer, Simone Weil, Maxine Greene, Miguel de Unamuno, and Simone de Beauvoir, it explores some of the uncomfortable, unsettling, less frequently visited ‘edges’ of education. These conceptual and lived spaces often blur the boundaries between the possible and the impossible, setting limits while also opening up unexpected opportunities for teaching and learning. They are there for us all to experience, if only we can open our eyes to see them and muster the courage to investigate them.
Neoliberalism, after decades of reform, continues to steer educational policies around the world. As private enterprise encroaches public education, schools are held accountable, tangled up in an internationally competitive culture of achieving benchmarks that meet technically managed standards. Not only is it academic performance that is audited but also codes of behavioral conduct.
As behaviour remains one of the most dominant discourses of schooling, it is discipline policies that are critiqued in this book, framed by tracing genealogical, historical, and political patterns of discipline practices in schooling from 16th century Europe through to 21st century Australia. Two in-depth, ethnographic case studies conducted in Western Australia (when the author was both teacher and researcher), are shared as theoretical tools to provide insights into how behavior management and discipline policies are enacted within the field of institutional secondary schooling. MODELO ABIERTO DE PENSAMIENTO COMPLEJO PARA EL FUTURO DE LA EDUCACIÓN
María Soledad Ramírez Montoya en ISBN 978-3-631-93302-2
Education is marked by conflicting demands and expectations from the state, society and individuals. Views on what education and schooling should achieve are numerous and vary across time and place. However, one recurring hope of people as human beings, this book argues, is to live a good and perhaps even a ‘beautiful life’. Drawing on Wilhelm Schmid’s notion of the art of living, this book explores how an Education for a Beautiful Life can make a meaningful contribution to some of today’s complex conversations, such as (student) wellbeing, social equity, equal educational opportunity, individual and social good, and the purposes, aims and goals of education and schooling. This is a powerful collection addressing the challenges, possibilities and responsibilities for de/anti-colonial African educational futurities. The book is framed within an anti-colonial interrogation of collective educational leadership, responsibility and accountability to address the invisibilization and marginalization of African Indigenous knowledge systems and to examine the critical role these knowledges can play in the decolonization of African education.

This book is a retrospective analysis and a clarion call for the future. Civic education, long relegated to the margins of academic discourse, is brought back into focus here. The book explores the bare necessities of civic education, charting how generations have been prepared—or ill-prepared—to engage meaningfully with democracy. With thoughtful precision, it challenges readers to consider the unwritten rules of politics that dictate much of our collective political consciousness and the vital importance of reinvigorating civic responsibility among all Americans, inspiring and motivating readers to act. From the role of education in shaping citizens to the gradual erosion of shared democratic values, this work provides an unparalleled and comprehensive exploration of the forces that culminated in one of the darkest days in American history.

Android, Assembled unpacks the phenomenon of social robots—not as monolithic machines but as sociotechnical assemblages, pieced together from bodily features (like heads and sensors) and the elements we read into them (like gender and authority). Each chapter explores the philosophical, theoretical, empirical, or technical understanding of discrete robot components to offer a deeper look into how those parts contribute to what social robots are and how humans experience them. Part I (Explicit Anatomy) considers the manifest components of robots—those that make up the physical robot and its capabilities: Shapes, heads, faces, eyes, legs, feet, wings, color, clothing, gestures, postures, speech, text, screens, memory, information, sensors, actuators, organic elements, and distributed elements. Part II (Implicit Anatomy) explores the parts of social robots that humans infer or interpret: Image, interactivity, cuteness, gender, power, authority, membership, cognition, decision-making, aliveness, mindedness, obligations, and ultimately the kind of thing a robot is. Along with the state of the art and science, each author gives a provocation to highlight open questions and possible futures.

The central issue of this volume is violence against women and young girls as part of symbolic or systemic violence, overt or subtle, and its impact on their health and general well-being. Recognised as a determinant of health, violence has been aptly described as a silent epidemic affecting women not only in Europe but globally.
This book aims to provide an additional platform for discussing the issue of violence against women and young girls, with a particular focus on its impact on health. The central question of this volume is the nature of interdisciplinary studies on gender violence, bringing together sociologists, lawyers, psychologists, anthropologists and biologists.
