This is an exciting time for the almost 50,000 people who live and work in Oakland Park, Florida. As the city anticipates its 100th anniversary in 2029, the clamor of construction heard currently is a reminder that good things are happening — especially in regard to economic growth, business openings and job creation. That spells opportunity — for everyone.
You’ve heard it said often, but it’s worth repeating: Small businesses are the lifeblood of a community.
By Peter Jackson FounderAs new businesses continue to open in Oakland Park at a robust pace — expanding consumer choices for everything from cuisine to goods and services — it’s important that we pause to recognize the businesses and individuals who are getting it right and offering superlative service.
The Oakland Park Business Association is proud to introduce the annual Best in Business People’s Choice Awards to foster pride and achievement in our business community.
After thousands of nominations and votes by the public, the Gold Star nominees and winners have been decided and are revealed in these pages.
Special congratulations to Michael Murphy, recipient of the first Business Icon of the Year award, and to ChainBridge Distillery, Oakland Park’s own internationally-acclaimed distillery, voted Business of the Year.
With his characteristic broad smile and warm personality, Michael Murphy has the uncanny ability to make you feel he’s your best friend — no matter if you’ve known him for years or a matter of minutes.
It’s the secret weapon this second-generation South Floridian has used over the past 33 years as a photographer to put his subjects at ease and capture remarkable images — in the process becoming one of the region’s most recognized professional photographers.
“My favorite subject to photograph is someone who doesn’t want to be photographed,” Michael explained. “I want to give them a safe space to relax and be comfortable. If they walk away saying, ‘that wasn’t so bad’, and see their incredible images without all the fake filters out there today, then that’s a victory. I want them to look at their picture and say, ‘Wow, that’s really me’!”
His talent behind the camera is immense — but so, too, is the scope of his philanthropic work.
Michael is a perpetual advocate, sponsor and benefactor of charities including The Heart Gallery, a non-profit organization that showcases traveling photo exhibits of adoptable children seeking Forever Families, Legal Aid of Broward, the Pride Center, Broward House, Pride Fort Lauderdale, and Latinos Salud, among others.
CONTINUED from page 7
He didn’t start his career path in photography. Michael spent 14 years in real estate before abruptly making the life-changing decision to pursue photography. He landed a job taking pictures for the long-defunct Scoop! magazine, a popular gay entertainment magazine at the time.
He ultimately opened his Oakland Park studio in February 1997 and has since been commissioned by such national and regional brands as Coca-Cola, Foresters Financial, BNY Mellon, Port Everglades, Broward County Convention Center and the cities of Oakland Park, Wilton Manors and Parkland.
He’s been featured on NBC 6’s “Today in South Florida” and Comcast Cable’s “Newsmakers”.
Not least of all, he was honored with a Leadership Broward award in 2019.
One of Michael’s proudest moments was his one-
man photo exhibition which reopened the Galleria after the COVID-19 shutdown. The exhibition was called “Front Porch Project” and comprised photographs Murphy shot of diverse people hanging out on their front porches during the height of the pandemic when social interaction was at its lowest.
The photographs of this haunting time in history caught the attention of the Sun-Sentinel, which published an article and some of the images on the front page of its Sunday Lifestyle section. That exposure led to an invitation to have the first oneman exhibition at the Galleria. “The photographs captured the diversity of South Florida — and Galleria wanted to say, ‘Welcome Back’. That was incredible and very moving,” said Michael.
The Oakland Park Business Association is proud to select Michael as the recipient of its first Business Icon Award for his achievements in business and his contributions to society.
The People’s Choice voters also chose him as Best Photographer for 2023.
ChainBridge Distillery (3500 NE 11th St., Oakland Park) has been voted Business of the Year 2023.
Named after a landmark bridge in Hungary, this award-winning distillery is helping to put Oakland Park on the map for its multi-award-winning brandy, vodka, rum and gin — all crafted from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
The Nahori family owns and operates ChainBridge Distillery, which opened its doors in 2019 in the city’s Culinary Arts District. Complete with a tasting room, the distillery offers flavorful batches of brandy, vodka, rum and gin.
In 2020, the American Craft Spirits Association awarded the distillery’s Williams Pear Brandy ‘Best In Class.’
Not to be outdone, the American Distillery Institute proclaimed ChainBridge’s Florida Basil Vodka its Best Botanical Vodka. Mixing two varieties of basil — one for aroma and one for taste — with sugarcane, the drink was deemed a “perfect base for an Italian inspired Bloody Mary cocktail,” by Forbes Magazine.
Critically hailed for its welcoming vibe, ChainBridge Distillery also hosts private events, bottling parties and comedy nights.
Tours are offered for a closer look at the distillation process.
Béla Nahori said the distillery currently distributes to 41 states.
Family, Béla said, brought him to South Florida from northeast Hungary. The country’s tradition of making Pálinka, a fruit brandy from the Middle Ages, continues to inspire the distillery’s modern day concoctions.
The Nahori family (right) is winning international acclaim for their spirits produced in Oakland Park.ALPHA GLASS & MIRROR

5 who make a difference
The future’s not ours to see, but even as a kid
Tranarous Johnson, known simply as J.T., knew he’d grow up to be a barber.
His grandmother, who helped to raise him, was a barber and as a young child J.T. remembers watching in child-like marvel as she cut people’s hair while he played a short distance away with mannequin heads.
By age 12, he had set up his own barbering chair and was cutting hair for friends and neighbors — and contributing to his family’s income.
Today, not only is J.T. is a master at his profession and a successful businessman — he is providing the pathway to a career for scores of young men and
women in search of a future at the barbering school he opened in 2018.
With his wife, Gloria, at his side, J.T. operates three J.T.’s Cuts locations — Oakland Park, Coconut Creek and his newest near downtown Fort Lauderdale — as well as J.T.’s Cuts Academy in Oakland Park where he and his staff have graduated about 150 skilled new barbers from the barbering school’s 10-12 month program.

Chiropractic Physician Dr. Donna Watson is proof that good things can emerge from bad situations.
A native Floridian raised in Dade and Broward Counties, Dr. Watson was very involved in competitive sports as a teenager and became an accomplished athlete.
That is, until a car accident left her in so much pain that she could not compete.
“An orthopedic said he couldn’t help me and told me to live with the pain,” she said. “My mother took me to a chiropractor and within two weeks I was back to doing all sports without pain.”
It was a defining moment in young Donna’s life.
“I decided then that I wanted to
“Love where you live, and look out for your neighbors as you would yourself.” Chris Fischer says he has lived by that maxim since moving to Oakland Park seven years ago.
Chris came here as an Emmy award-winning Sports Anchor/Reporter for NBC South Florida, and carries the virtues of that job in “asking the right questions and informing others” in his roles as the president of The Corals of Oakland Park Neighborhood Association and a member of Oakland Park’s Planning and Zoning Board.
Currently an Estate Agent with Florida Luxurious Properties focused on Oakland Park and adjacent neighborhoods, Chris is a person neighbors and citizens alike turn to when they have concerns or to express their many praises for our “City on the Move.”
be able to do that for people. I think once you have been the patient sitting on the table looking to the doctor to fix you, you listen differently, and empathize differently.”
Today, Dr. Donna, as she’s known to her patients, practices acupuncture and chiropractic at her Oakland Park clinic called A Place of Health.
An animal rights advocate, she is the founder of the Dr Donna Pet Foundation, a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to fight against animal abuse and promote animal welfare.

Barbie’s got nothing on Desiree Avila! This Oakland Park single mom left the lower-paying teaching profession a few years ago to provide a better life for her family.
Her 2023 People’s Choice Award for “Best Real Estate Professional” is testament to her hard work and talent.
But wait — there’s more! A devoted mother who prioritizes time with her daughter, Desiree is also the publisher and editor of LivingInOaklandPark.com, a digital online magazine with a large Facebook group she updates daily — AND she is the incoming president of the Oakland Park Business Association.
Excerpts of a recent interview:
Q: Tell us a bit about your background. You were actually a teacher for many years before you entered real estate?
A: I was a history teacher for eight years. I taught at a private Catholic school and online for a private university. I absolutely love teaching and I loved teaching history. I did not want to leave teaching, but unfortunately, as a teacher I did not earn enough to keep my little family afloat.
I was working on a doctorate in educational technology while at the same time studying for my real estate license. After I earned my license, I had to make a decision because I could not pursue both careers. I chose real estate because I was a single mother with a young child and I needed to have a schedule that I could manage so that I could be there for her.
At the time I could not yet know that real estate would be just as fulfilling. It is a field in which education plays a huge part. All the knowledge and skills I accumulated over the years as an educator are not lost. In fact, they are being put to good use helping people make informed decisions about real estate.
Today, I see real estate, first and foremost, as a way of helping people — and somewhere along the
line a transaction occurs. I love what I do and I am glad I made the change.
Q: In addition to your full-time work in real estate, you are the publisher of a digital magazine Living In Oakland Park. Tell us about that.
A: Living in Oakland Park was an idea I had because Oakland Park didn’t have a publication of its own. Oakland Park was a side note on the nightly news or in major local publications. The city is on the verge of a major revitalization and these development projects are newsworthy. In addition the City’s businesses and residents have rich stories and experiences that should be shared. My background in history and technology gave me a unique set of skills to be able to make Living In Oakland Park happen. Once I decided I was going to do it, I spent the entire night creating the publication and in the morning it was done. I started publishing right away and today we have nearly 700 articles, most of which are about the awesome little City of Oakland Park!
Q: You are a single mother who makes juggling family life, career and community work all look easy. What advice do you have for other single parents?
A: Time management. You have to have time management down to a T! You will work a lot, you will be tired a lot and that is OK! Just don’t lose sight of what motivates you — and don’t forget about you. Remember to allow yourself time for yourself!
If you burn out, everybody and everything that depends on you may suffer.
