MONTROSE

Nobody saw the permutations that erupted last week to enlighten League 1, Dumbarton were reduced to 8 men against rivals Airdrieonians which saw a 96th minute winner from Salim KouiderAissa. Some will describe the events in Lanarkshire as pulsating whilst others will call it banter.

MONTROSE

Events at Airdrie and Firhill last Sunday afternoon where Alloa Athletic cooked a stormer of a Sunday roast, coming back from 3-2 down to turn league leaders Queens Park over 4-3 thanks to an injury time brace on Euan Henderson, the striker serving his trade on loan from Hearts just signifies how competitive Cinch League 1 is but also, you can't take your eye off the ball. It makes proceedings today very interesting, it's 1st v 2nd in the Granite City with Cove Rangers hosting Queens Park, guaranteed points dropper for either side, of course, leagues aren't won on Halloween weekend but every 3 points is important in this league. Alloa Athletic v Airdrieonians also promises to be an exciting encounter with Alloa whilst Ian Murray's Airdrie have enjoyed a couple of well earned wins over Falkirk and Dumbarton.

There's also Montrose, the side that at times go unperceived and unregarded, of course, Montrose wouldn't be unperturbed about but what a job Stewart Petrie has done at Links Park since his arrival 5 years ago, from lifting the League 2 title to being competitive in League 1, it's been a complete mastermind from the Mo gaffer. The recruitment in recent seasons has been very strong, James Keatings is an accustomed Championship player and lack of game time at parent club Raith Rovers saw the Kirkcaldy club seek a shortterm venture to get back up to speed. Montrose came calling and there was quite the inauguration for Keatings. Announcing the move, the Montrose social media team created a mockup of the Apprentice TV show with Sir Alan Sugar ultimately telling James Keatings, 'You're hired.' Indeed, that is a small but pivotal part in how Montrose FC are run as a football club, they have a terrific board of directors who have helped the club through the COVID-19 pandemic, they have a solid fanbase, some of which will definitely be heading to the match this afternoon and witnessing a return to the top for Montrose who enjoyed one weekend in pole position but have been on the periphery for much of the season.

JIM McINALLY It was great point against Falkirk. I don’t think we can play as well as we can play, we seemed to get the worst of the wind in the first half and we had to change our team with Simon coming off and he was a big loss to us. I felt we were a little bit all over the place an hanging on a bit. We got to half time and we thought we were still in it then Niah calls over and said he can’t continue so we then had to put on a substitute without having to plan for it. We countered attack a lot but we didn’t attack effectively but overall it was a good point against a full-time team. We kept a clean sheet which was pleasing and sometimes you need to be happy with a point even though you don’t play well and I think we did that. Brett’s shot stopping is first class and he showed our previous match against Falkirk down there he made loads of saves that day too. Brett and Lenny have struck up a little rapport and they work well together, now Lenny is saying you can’t afford to leave Brett out. I felt Brett deserved to get a clean sheet after that performance. Niah’s injury looks bad, it’s his ankle which was pretty swollen so we will need to see how long that will sideline him for. Simon’s hamstrings tightened up so it doesn’t look too bad and he may be available for today’s game.

BALMOOR NEWS Peterhead midfielder Gary Fraser has been handed an early Christmas present after it was confirmed that he will finally undergo his knee surgery on December 16 almost a year after he injured in a game at Balmoor against Montrose. During the summer the club ran a crowdfunding page to help pay the cost of Gary’s operation as well as raise funds for Mental Health Charity Back Onside. Blue Toon manager Jim McInally put his number four shirt from the second leg of Dundee United’s 1987 UEFA Cup Final against IFK Gothenburg up for auction, with player/coach Simon Ferry doing likewise with his English League Two winning top (number 8) with Swindon from 2012. Their generosity was matched by Back Onside who donated a four ball at their Golf Day in St Andrews next May as well a Tyson Fury Boxing Glove. Motherwell’s Tony Watt, Dundee’s Charlie Adam, Andrew Halliday from Hearts as well as Kevin Nisbet, who handed over the Scotland top he wore when he scored against the Netherlands, to help swell the funds with Peterhead General Manager Martin Johnston putting up a Paul Gascoigne painting and a Peterhead title winning jersey up for auction. Gary’s former club Partick Thistle joined in by auctioning a picture of a famous goal he scored for the Jags and nearly £22,000 was raised which included a handsome donation from West Ham Chairman David Gold who had read on-line about his situation. HAY CRESCENT HEY DAYS

SCOTTISH LEAGUE THIRD DIVISION SATURDAY 5th AUGUST 2000 BALMOOR STADIUM

PETERHEAD 2 MONTROSE 0 Peterhead manager Ian Wilson issued a warning to the rest of the Third Division after seeing his side register a comfortable 2-0 win over Montrose on the Buchan men’s Scottish League debut. Wilson revealed his star turns – striker Gary Clark and man of the match Scott Paterson have signed new contracts. Clark, who had reservations about holding down a regular place this season, and Paterson, who is keen on staying in full-time football, were have understood to have signed short-term deals, but Wilson laid that myth after seeing his side cruise to an easy victory at Balmoor. He said “Gary and Scott are both in the fold for the season and, after seeing them play well against Montrose in a terrific team performance, I’m delighted they have committed themselves to the club.” Clark’s pace and high work rate posed problems for the Gable Endies defence throughout, while Paterson played a fine through ball to set up Martin Johnston for Peterhead’s 75th minute clincher. By then Peterhead had taken a 26th minute lead courtesy of former Ross County and East Fife defender Billy Herd, who claimed a little bit of history for the second time in his career when he hit Scott Brown’s set up past Gary McGlynn to put the home side in front. He said “I’m making a bit of a habit of scoring the first league goal for a new Scottish League side. I hit Ross County’s first goal in a 2-0 win over Cowdenbeath in 1994 as well.”

IAN WILSON Herd, one of five Peterhead players making their debuts, formed a superb defensive partnership with Mark Simpson and Peterhead made their first helping of Scottish League points safe when Paterson sent Johnston through and the big former Cove Rangers midfielder, handed his debut as a striker, curled a winner low past Montrose keeper McGlynn. “We put on a good performance, we worked hard and got the goals just at the right times in the game, so I’m very pleased,” said Wilson, who sounded a cautious not for the future. He added “We’ve got to make sure we don’t get carried away by that win. We’ve had problems scoring goals in pre-season games and on another day we might not have taken the two hances we did today.”

PART 48d –

Mounting Debts… Enter the Troubleshooter

The 1984/85 season started with the following new players; Jim Donaldson, brothers Bev and Brian Hendry, Ally Bell, Michael Cruickshank, Colin Smith, Gary Leiper, and Aberdeen Junior Ian Wilson was signed. Former player Lweis Duncan returned to the fold. In playing terms the season was a non-event. An 8th place finish in the league and no silverware in the boardroom. One memorable distinction for young striker Michael Cruickshank was scoring a hat-trick of goals at Rothes, regrettably the team lost 5-3. Fort William joined the league for the start of the 1985/86 campaign. The following season it would be the turn of Cove Rangers to gain admission to the league. It did appear to many HL fans, that in certain parts of the media, there was no Highland League in existence before the arrival of Cove

12

Rangers. Neil Burke, Dave Oxley, Ian Fraser, and Jim Guyan were new additions to the squad for that season. Jim Bain returned after a season with Keith. The club reached the final of the Qualifying Cup for the 9th time in its history, recording a comprehensive 5-1 win over Buckie Thistle. Goals from Guyan, Porter, Bell, Loch, and an own-goal from Buchanan saw the Cup return to Peterhead. In the Scottish Cup, the team lost 2-1 at home to Arbroath in the 1st Round. The league form showed an improvement with a 3rd place finish. Jim Buchan had been magnificent all season, behind a resolute defence he conceded only 25 league goals. Such was Jim’s for, Davie Murray, a tough tackling full back from the Fifties and now a

rs master butcher, reached a deal with Jim bye he would supply our goalie with a T-bone steak for every clean sheet. Alternatively, Jim would give Davie a miniature of whisky for every goal conceded. For the record, there was 17 games in total from 34 played when the defence was unbeaten. Jim lost 25 goals in total. Title winners Forres Mechanics, and runners-up Elgin City, both conceded more goals. The net result of this arrangement between Davie and Jim was that our goalkeeper was seldom hungry at the weekend and Davie had some wonderfully happy Saturday nights. There was a rumour then that Kevin, Ally, Sivvy, and Skipper were not thrilled by Jim’s good

fortune and quite rightly felt they had contributed a little to the low goals against tally. It was a goodnatured protest and they made their justifiable point. I think it was around this time that Colin Grant returned to the club. Co-opted by Mr Warrender and immediately installed as VicePresident. Co-option to such an elevated office was unique in the annals of the club’s existence. Was there no long serving committee member capable of holding what is no more than a token position? Mr Grant’s qualities as an administrator was unknown and in any case, he as an individual, was irrelevant to my argument against such an appointment. With the passage of time and what later transpired in 1990, I could safely assume that Robbie eventually saw some merit in my opinion.

SPFL NEWS

SPFL ANNOUNCES £3.6M BOOST FOR CLUBS The SPFL is releasing £3.6 million of vital funds to clubs across the country in a significant boost to the game.

• turnover increased 17.4% to £36.8m • total fees paid to clubs (including parachute payments) increased by 20.5% (£4.9m)

The substantial sum will be split between all 42 member clubs in the cinch Premiership, cinch Championship, cinch League 1 and cinch League 2. It comes as clubs learned at today’s SPFL General Meeting that the total league fees shared by clubs for season 2020/21 amounted to £28,357,215. This figure excludes parachute payments and is the highest in the history of the league.

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster, said: “We are extremely happy to be able to transfer £3.6 million in league fees to our members this week, bringing total distributions to clubs for Season 2020/21 to over £28 million – the largest sum in the history of Scottish league football.

The latest distribution of funds, which is nearly £3.6 million plus VAT, will reach the majority of clubs this week. The total figure distributed for season 2020/21 is £3 million above budget and £5 million more than the total fees distributed in 2019/20. It is also an increase of 62% on the amount paid to clubs in the first season following the 2013 merger of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League to form the 42-club SPFL.. The SPFL’s accounts for the year ended 31 May 2021 show:

“It continues to be a very tough time for our 42 member clubs as the entire country attempts to recover from the pandemic, but these vital funds will help support them in this difficult period. We are determined to continue building on this success in the coming years, working with our clubs and their executive teams to maximise opportunities to further invest in the game.“ It is believed that Peterhead received in the region of £11k of this money with Rangers £400k and Brechin City £6k as a comparison.

MATCH REPORT

saturday 23rd october 2021 PETERHEAD

0

Falkirk with a strong wind at their backs took the game to their hosts and on-loan Aberdeen striker Michael Ruth was picked out with a cross on 11 minutes however his header drifted over Long’s goal. Two minutes later the Peterhead goalkeeper did well again when he pushed away a drive from Declan McDaid. Manager McInally was forced into making a change to his line-up with only 15 minutes gone as player/ coach Simon Ferry limped off injured with recent signing Grant Savoury coming on earlier than he may have expected. Shortly afterwards Ruth skipped past Jason Brown but his cross floated wide and as the Bairns kept up the pressure Charlie Telfer fired wide and Long denied Aidan Nesbitt. As Falkirk looked to make a breakthrough just before the half-time whistle McDaid tried his luck from the edge of the box however Long stretched high to palm the ball over. Peterhead’s plans to use the attacking threat of Niah Payne with the wind in their favour took a knock just before the second 45 minutes started when the former Bradford City youth player indicated that he could not continue due to an ankle injury. Lyall Cameron came on with little preparation time to take his place and to add to Peterhead’s bad luck the wind machine was beginning to slow down!

FALKIRK

0

Falkirk were soon on the attack again and McDaid thought he had made the breakthrough from close range after Nesbitt trickery however Long was equal to the challenge again. Scott Brown fired Peterhead’s best chance of the afternoon, so far, wide on 52 minutes with a goal at the other end looking certain five minutes later when Ruth burst clear on goal however again Long saved. Midway through the second half David Wilson almost put Peterhead in front with a wicked effort. With everyone expecting a cross from the right wing the defender sent an effort curling towards Paddy Martin’s goal with the ball just fizzing past the post. With five minutes left the hosts carved out a great chance when McLean was played through however Martin copied Long’s heroics by blocking the striker’s drive. With 90 seconds remaining Falkirk forced a corner on the right and again it looked like they would score when Ruth thumped a volley towards goal from closerange however Long had kept his best to last by diving to his right and turning the ball away. Long, Mulligan, Wilson, Jason Brown, Duffy, Ferry (Savoury 15), McCarthy (McDonald 54), Ritchie, Scott Brown, Payne (Cameron 45), McLean. Unused substitutes – Wilson (G/k), Strachan, Lyle

REPLICA KITS? Take a walk through any part of Scotland and you’ll be lucky to see kids out kicking a ball. The world has changed. Kids aren’t allowed out to play anymore. If you do see any of these elusive creatures, they will invariably be wearing a Barcelona strip or a Mand City, Spurs or Arsenal shirt. Their iPad world is inwardlooking, yet their connectivity is so much wider. Champions League, satellite TV and Match of the Day have given more coverage to football. The game consoles make them less of a team player. Their knowledge of the game is extensive, yet they have become more insular. The football strip, as we know it, has been around since ‘modern’ football began in the 1850s. The branding and the marketing of the replica kit, however is a surprisingly recent concept. It was, in fact, Bert Patrick, the chairman of Leicester based knitwear company Admiral, who, in 1974 saw an opportunity. He came up with the brilliant idea of producing replica strips featuring the Admiral logo, which he had the exclusive rights to sell. Patrick paid the Football Association £15,000a year for the privilege, charging £5 for the top and £9 for the shorts and socks – extortionate at the time but it didn’t stop them selling in their thousands. Not much has changed since. Most fans understand it’s a revenue generator for clubs. Some of the world’s biggest clubs sell more than two million replica shirts per year. If Bert Patrick was dealing with the F.A. to secure a deal for England’s kit now, he would need to find in the region of £400 million, which is what Nike paid in 2016, securing the rights until 2030. Historically, football began with public school boys or military teams and the team colour were flamboyant, usually from their schools or regiments. The kit has since come full circle. It has returned in some way to a more sensible look, more in keeping with the traditions of the club history. However, there was a time in the 1980s when strips were flashy, garish and completely disconnected to anything the club stood

26

for. Watching a big game at this time was like watching MTV on magic mushrooms. There was a time when only the club badge was permitted on a top. I remember the hullaballoo when Hibs. In 1977, dared to emblazon ‘Bukta’, their shirt sponsors, across their chests. Bukta were the first sports manufacturer, dating back in 1879. Their major competitor was Umbro but they didn’t come on the scene until 1924. After Hibs became the first side in the UK to use a sponsor across their jersey, Liverpool followed suit in 1977 and changed the way sponsorship was viewed in the English football league. Every replica shirt thereafter would also advertise the sponsor. Now, clubs have strips like Formula 1 motor cars with every inch treated like a place to earn cash. However, it’s left to the loyal fan, the supposed lifeblood of the game, to foot the bill, shelling out for a news strip – or three – every season. Nowadays when clubs and manufacturers start work on a new kit, they typically try to find some kind of historic connection to reproduce. If the marketing departments at Nike, Umbro, New Balance, Under Armour or Adidas release a kit based on a strip worn in a significant game fifty years ago, fans seem even more willing to buy into it. Most fans know the replica strip is a rip-off but they are still mysteriously willing to part with their money for one. It’s tough to work out the more heinous crime – the price (close to a hundred quid for a full replica strip) or a middle-aged man with a beer belly squeezed into his team’s top?

HIGHLAND LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

29

PETERHEAD 1946-47 It was only the first full season after WWII and it will go down in the history of Peterhead FC as the most successful season to date. The club captured the Aberdeenshire Cup, the Scottish Qualifying Cup and, for the very first time, the Highland League title. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of this great season the BLUE TOON TALK will take you on a journey detailing the highs and lows of this memorable season.

PETERHEAD FC QUALIFYING CUP

CHAMPIONS It was uttered amongst the 5,400 crowd that had gathered for this final that in 50 years of Highland League football, never a harder game had been seen. From the kick off to the last minute both sets of players gave it their all. The match was full of excitement and tension where anything was liable to happen and the struggle would be talked about for years to come. The game had a sensational opening, Clachnacuddin launched a real Culloden style charge sweeping all before them and claiming a goal on five minutes. Momentary uncertainty in the Peterhead defence saw Kane fire a fierce shot past Henry and for a brief spell thereafter danger threatened the Buchan goal, largely from MacKenzie, the outside-right. He emulated Stanley Matthews with a few mazy runs! Many of the Buchan faithful were gravely worried, not because of the early goal but because of the slap-dash Inverness attack and how Peterhead would retaliate.

PETERHEAD 1946-47 Their worries were not long delayed. The Blues began finding each others feet with Dickie slipping the ball up the middle of the carpet. Anderson, the most artistic player on the field was trapping it coolly, manoeuvring it gracefully and slipping short passes to his inside man who, in turn, fed it out wide. Play continued in this fashion and an equalising goal arrived. Marr took a corner, Strachan plunged into a goalmouth scrimmage and managed to poke the ball into the net past McDougall. Strachan also maintained his record of scoring in every cup tie. From then on to the interval, Peterhead served up the best football of the day and went ahead through a perfectly executed goal. McIntosh gathered a pass from Dickie, beat one man, drew another and slid a peach of a pass to Anderson. The centre collected the ball neatly, evaded McKay and placed his shot well out of McDougall’s reach. From the pure football point of view Peterhead were now the superior side but Clach were full of fire and all their attacks spelt danger. Fortunately the Buchan defenders had now found their feet and, though often hard pressed, they yielded nothing. Three times Marr had the opportunity to increase the scoring and was sent clean through, twice he finished poorly and the third time driving his shot past the outside of the net. The second half opened with a regular barrage on the Peterhead goal with the Inverness side forcing a number of corners. Each time the Blue’s defence held firm and were unbeatable. Once again when the Highland burst died away, the Buchan side came into the picture with cool calculated football and although they never quite touched their first half standard, they were distinctly the better constructive side.

31

PETERHEAD 1946-47 Everytime they got on the move, Dickie’s craft and experience proved invaluable and Milne was responding with skill and dash. It was from a joint move by these two that the ball reached McIntosh and without hesitation the inside left shot past McDougall. It seemed all over but Clach rallied strongly and after a flying run down the centre, Baxter scored. The excitement was turned on once again. The eager Clach forwards shot repeatedly from long range but Henry took everything in his stride. The tension in the last ten minutes of the match beggars description. The Peterhead defence weathered the hurricane but not without alarm and they were perhaps a tad fortunate to escape the consequences of the second of two penalty claims. In the end they came through and played good football to the final whistle which found them worthy winners. It was a fine performance all round and a large cheer rang out when captain ‘Doddy’ Buchan lifted the silverware for the first time.

Fresh from their hectic cup schedule Peterhead resumed their league campaign with a useful draw away to Keith. The result shows them remain as the only unbeaten team in the Highland League. Keith made things difficult and had their backs to the wall for large parts of the game. The home side went ahead through Duncan and doubled their lead just after half-time from star forward Hilton. Peterhead came more into the limelight and fifteen minutes from the end McIntosh raised their hopes with a good goal. In the last minute Peterhead forced a corner and all hands were on deck in the Keith goalmouth. From Marr’s kick captain George Buchan levelled the score. On reflection Keith were a shade unfortunate to lose a point but once again Peterhead showed that great fighting spirit to the last gasp. That kind of attitude points to championship winning material.

INJURY UPDATE Two out of three may not be bad Peterhead manager Jim McInally is hoping that two of three Blue Toon players out with short-term injuries will be available to face Montrose today. Ryan Conroy missed Saturday’s goalless draw with Falkirk due to an ankle injury picked up against Alloa the week before with Simon Ferry (hamstring) and Niah Payne (ankle) limping off against the Bairns.

The news about striker Payne is not so good with Jim saying: “Niah’s ankle was swollen on Saturday and there is still some swelling there so he will not be doing any training this week. The best we can hope for is that he will be ready for the following week when we travel to Airdrie.”

Jim said: “Ryan came up and did some training on Tuesday night so there is some progress there. We will need to wait and see if there is any reaction. If he is pain free over the next couple of days then he could be in my plans for today.” “Simon felt tightness in both of his hamstrings against Falkirk and we managed to get him off before he caused too much damage. He will take things easy this week and hopefully that could have him ready.”

40

“If we could get two of the three in today’s squad for Montrose that would be good. They are a good side who are playing well, scoring goals and winning games just now. Their manager Stewart Petrie is always respectful about us as opponents so they will be coming to our place ready for a tough game.”

rd SCOTISH CUP 3 ROUND DRAW

Charlie Mulgrew made the draw for the third round of the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park last Sunday afternoon. After their victory against Stranraer, Darvel will travel to Brechin City as they aim for further progression. Queen’s Park will be eying an upset against Kilmarnock and Gala Fairydean Rovers will take on League 2 opposition, Annan Athletic. After the draw, Charlie Mulgrew looked back on his memories of winning the competition twice with Celtic, scoring a memorable free-kick in 2011 against Motherwell. He said: “The Scottish Cup is a tournament all players across Scotland want to be involved in for as long as possible and reach Hampden Park. I managed to win two with Celtic and it’s a brilliant feeling - a great way to end the season. “The final in 2011 was an amazing day and my first season back at Celtic. I managed to get myself into the team around January and was involved in the Scottish Cup run. To score that goal and secure the 3-0 victory was a dream come true to lift a trophy. I remember watching Celtic play in the Scottish Cup when I was younger, in 1995 when things weren’t great at the club and they beat Airdrie. It was surreal to be involved with it myself. Those medals and jerseys are something I treasure. The biggest challenge is making sure my sons don’t wear them about the garden! Winning Scottish Cups are memories that last a lifetime so I’ve made sure to collect mementos from the day”. Looking back on doing the draw, Mulgrew said: “That was pressure! The 6 and 9 was stressing me out as I didn’t want to put them the wrong way up but we got there in the end.” Alloa Athletic v Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic Arbroath v Forfar Athletic Auchinleck Talbot v Hamilton Academical Ayr United v Brora Rangers or Albion Rovers Banks O’Dee v East Fife Brechin City v Darvel Civil Service Strollers v Peterhead Clydebank or Elgin City v Clyde Cove Rangers v Queen of the South Dalbeattie Star or Rothes v East Kilbride Dumbarton v Sauchie Juniors Dunbar United or Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale v Edinburgh City

NORTHERN SLANT by Peter Myers

Every picture

It’s said that every picture tells a story, and this applies to the one above. It is one of the few colour images of Aberdeen in action during the early 1960s. The Dons were playing Third Lanark in a league match at Cathkin Park on Saturday, October 3, 1964. The visitors lost 4-1 and the expressions on the Aberdeen players’ faces says it all. Goalkeeper John (Tubby) Ogston looks bemused as the ball enters the net while team-mate Ally Shewan (on the ground) has a look of disbelief and wing-half Charlie Cooke is the picture of despair. It was an afternoon to forget for Aberdeen’s defenders. Thirds opened the scoring when Ogston fumbled a ball from Mike Jackson after Doug Baillie’s header had been blocked. Max Murray was on the spot to slam the rebound high into the net. Just before half time, Thirds’ player/coach Bobby Evans pushed the ball to Baillie whose pass was collected by Jackson, who rounded two defenders before rolling the ball home. Evans made it three with a 20yd low drive while Baillie sealed the win with a well-taken goal 3min from the end. Billy Little grabbed a consolation goal for the Dons.

46

tells a story …

Few could have then predicted that that result would be Thirds’ biggest victory out of three in a wretched season which saw the Glasgow team go into meltdown. Not a single point was earned from November 28 to the end of the season. They scored a paltry 22 goals and conceded a whopping 99 and seven points from three wins and a draw was all the team could muster for their efforts. They dropped into Division Two and just two years later this old-established club ceased to exist, its demise being blamed on financial mismanagement. A Thirds’ player who escaped the approaching debacle was centre-half John McCormick who was signed by Aberdeen less than two weeks after their Cathkin defeat. He kept his place at the heart of the Dons’ defence until displaced by Tommy McMillan. McCormick revived his career after heading south to join Crystal Palace

NORTHERN SLANT by Peter Myers

(continued from page 47) A month before the Cathkin clash, Aberdeen had the chance of lifting some elusive silverware, but a superior Hibernian side beat them 3-1 at Pittodrie to win the Summer Cup. The Dons needed new blood and they signed three Danish players – Jens Petersen, Jorgen Ravn and Leif Mortensen – who made their debut in the return fixture against Third Lanark at a snow-covered Pittodrie on January 27, 1965. The Scandinavian imports attracted a crowd of 8,049 who were keen to see them in action with Ravn on target in a 3-1 victory. By coincidence, Ally Shewan made his first-team debut for the Dons against Third Lanark on March 20, 1962 at Cathkin in which Aberdeen won 5-3. Shewan won praise for keeping a tight rein on Alex Bryce, Thirds’ outside-left. The defender had been signed by the Dons from Formartine United in September 1960 and made history by becoming the first player from United to join a senior side. He had been tipped to make the move the previous month after the young trialist shone with Aberdeen’s reserve team against an Aberdeenshire Junior select. However, Shewan continued to play for Formartine until he joined Aberdeen’s playing staff on November 7, 1960. Aberdonian John Ogston joined the Dons from Banks O’ Dee and made his firstteam debut on December 20, 1958 in a 3-1 home defeat to Rangers. Three years later he began a remarkable 100 consecutive appearances for the Dons when he kept a clean sheet against Falkirk at Brockville. The Aberdeen stopper marked his century with several great saves which helped the Dons beat Dundee United 2-1 on December 14, 1963. Charlie Cooke was one of Aberdeen’s few genuinely talented players at that time. It was little wonder that the fans were shocked and angered when he was sold to Dundee in December 1964. He was in the Dark Blues’ line-up for the Ne’er Day derby at Pittodrie but missed several straightforward chances on his old stamping ground. He moved to Chelsea in April 1966 and was in the team which won the European Cup- Winners’ Cup against Real Madrid in 1971. Cooke was transferred to Crystal Palace and played for them in a friendly against the Dons at Pittodrie in January 1973. He returned to Chelsea in January 1974. The appointment of Eddie Turnbull as Dons’ manager in March 1965 ushered in a new era. Turnbull brought Bobby Clark, his goalkeeper at Queen’s Park, to Pittodrie, and who replaced the injured Ogston in goal for a League Cup match against Clyde on August 28. Less than a month later Clark established himself as first-choice keeper, and Ogston was transferred to Liverpool, where he was understudy to Tommy Lawrence. Ogston made only one first-team appearance for the Anfield side before he moved to Doncaster Rovers in 1968 and then returned north to join Buckie Thistle in 1971. He also turned out for Huntly, Fraserburgh and Deveronvale.

54

Ally Shewan kept his place in Turnbull’s side and suffered the disappointment of being defeated by Celtic in the 1967 Scottish Cup Final. He made an incredible 314 consecutive appearances for Aberdeen’s first team between 1964-69 in league, cup, friendly and tour matches, a record which is unlikely to be surpassed. He had a spell in Australia before returning home to join Elgin City and later turned out for Ross County and Lossiemouth.
