How many books can I borrow?    

FE students can borrow 8 books Access students can borrow 10 books HE students can borrow 14 books Staff can borrow 20 books

This allowance includes a combination of “normal loan” books (books that can be borrowed for four weeks) and “one week loans” as well as DVDs.

Study Areas The LRC has designated study areas for students. The question is: Where do you work best?

The PCs rooms There are two PC rooms for quiet, individual PC work.

Between them there are 48 PCs  Laser Printer located opposite the main desk  1 Scanner The Pods This area is available for you to work in small groups.

In this area you can Work at tables in small groups  Borrow a laptop from the main library desk.  Connect laptops to the Silent Study Need silence to work? This is your place. You can either borrow a laptop from the main library desk or sockets are provided for students to use their own devices, as long as they have been PAT testAs well as the above we also have tables throughout the LRC for study purposes and 6 bookable PCS especially for 77

Finding Resources The Catalogue Peterborough Regional College Online is a catalogue of the wide range of resources available to support your studies. It is accessible:  on two dedicated PCs within the LRC  via the LRC page on Moodle  Outside College using https://library.peterborough.ac.uk

You can search by entering a specific subject (either a word or phrase) into the search term box and then browse the results.

For more information on the catalogue, please see our “Using the LRC catalogue” leaflet.

Most books and DVDs are arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme. Please note down the full class number and author in order to find the right place on the shelves.

Subject Guides From Animal Care to Travel and Tourism, we have LRC subject guides to help with finding your way around. Each one has special book suggestions for your course and information on the LRC in general. Please ask staff for your subject guide or see a copy on Moodle.

Staff Staff are always happy to help, whether it is with finding a book or with technical problems on a PC. Don't be afraid to ask! LRC staff also run training sessions within curriculum areas at PRC and UCP. Borrowing rules Types of loans



 

Normal Loan– these books can be borrowed for up to four weeks and can be renewed as long as they are not reserved and you have no fines.

Week Loan– these books can be borrowed for one week and can be renewed as long as they are not reserved and you have no fines.

Reference only and Library use only books cannot be borrowed, but can be used within the LRC. DVDs– these can be borrowed for a week

Returning Resources Books are valuable resources, so we ask you to be considerate by returning them on time as other students may be waiting to use them. We offer an advanced texting service as a reminder, whereby we can text you 3 working days before your books are due back. If you would like to sign up for this, please ask at the main LRC desk.

Fines are charged on late returns. They are 5p per day per item increasing to a maximum charge of £3 per item. Failure to return books will incur further charges and may result in your debt being referred to an external debt collection agency. The College may also take disciplinary action.

If the LRC is closed, books can be returned via the returns box located outside the Main LRC door.

More than just books E-Resources You can access our growing collection of electronic resources including e-journals, e-books and online databases via the LRC menu on Moodle. Most are available from outside College. These provide a wealth of information to help you with your projects and assignments as they contain good quality information from legitimate sources. We produce a number of leaflets, help sheets and online tutorials and provide training sessions to help you use these resources. Please ask LRC staff for further information.

DVDs DVDs can be watched in the LRC and can be borrowed for a week. In the LRC you can watch them on a PC or laptop. You will need to come to the main desk to borrow headphones.

Reader Account You can check your own account, providing you have your student number. Please ask at the issue desk to be set up with a PIN. You must keep this number secret. You can then check what items you have on loan, whether you have any fines to pay and what items you borrowed in the past. You can also renew your books online and reserve books that are on loan.

Please logout at the end of your session. You can access your account both inside and outside College.

A little extra

Stationery Shop To assist students in their studies the LRC sells a range of stationery at competitive prices. Look out for special offers and promotions throughout the year. For current prices please see our stationery bookmark, or the price list in the LRC.

Colour Printing

LRC offers colour printing for the price of 40p per sheet.

This is done from the main library desk. You can either email your documents to issue1@peterborough.ac.uk or bring a USB stick to the desk.

Photocopying The LRC offers facilities for photocopying. Copying is 10p a sheet.

Remember there are Copyright laws regarding photocopying from books! Please check the notice by the photocopier for more details.

Events, Activities & Surveys The LRC will be holding a series of events, surveys and focus groups throughout the year. Please look out for more details on noticeboards around the College, on Moodle and on our Twitter feed, @prc_lrc
