The Ernakulam market lies in the heart of Kochi City and is in the CBD area. Ernakulam market was formed in early 1900’s when the trade shifted from Fort Kochi to Mainland Ernakulam. The market triggered the urban settlement in mainland and made Kochi what it is today.

The thesis was based on a live government proposal by CSML in which they have proposed the deomlition of the entire structure and proposing a brand new market structure. Urban Market Redvelopment is the revival of the existing Ernakulam wholesale market to a modern central retail market by keeping the heritage of the market intact. The Project also includes the redevelopment of the market canal and market square to an urban public space and uplifting the entire market precinct into a functional and captivating area. The project also focuses on deriving a design idea that can be used in designing or reviving public markets in an urban context.

Thetraditional market along with the associated Market Square and Pond, played the role of the central and most celebrated public space in the city during the initial years

Ernakulam Market mainly houses Stationary, Grocery, Vegetable, Fruits, Fish, Meat, Poultry, etc. and other stalls in its composition. There are both wholesale and retail shop owners. the total number of shops in the market is approximately 218 shops. Built in the colonial architectural language, the planform follows a rectangular grid system, with entries in the North and East sides of the Market. The North-east corner, which faces the junction of Valavi Road and Market Road, has a curved façade, typically found in buildings at many junctions in the precinct. The East and North Blocks facing the roads are the main blocks which also has the entry points located almost at the centre of each block. This part of the block is double storeyed which also help marking the entry points clearly.

The current Ernakulam Market comprises of the market complex ,the market square and the market pond-canal. The market pond is the main attractive feature of the area and represents the Traditional Kerala Market

The market complex is a 3 storey building featuring a central courtyard surrounded by the old market building in the street edge and the new building in the opposite site edge. The wet market is a 2 storey structure featuring a dock with direct access from the market pond.

market courtyard throughout the day. 04

The new buildings are placed on both sides of the road with both facing the market pond. The new buildings will help in connecting all the Identified ‘urban courtyards’.

The idea is to create a ‘Dry Courtyard’ of the similar size inside the market complex which will have the potential to host diverse functions and to connect the other two courtyards.

An elevated structure around the pond which hosts various functions like shaded walkway, dining space, play area, water fountains etc. The pavilion emphasizes the spatial quality and its elevated deck enhances the visitor experience of the pond.

The market pond is revived to its original size like as it was in the beginning of The Ernakulam Market.

The market pond is identified as an open breathing space in the thick urban fabric. It acted like a ‘wet courtyard’ in the dense urban profile.

A similar open space with a different potential was identified in between two publicly relevant buildings in the precinctCentral Juma Masjid & Thekkumbhagom Synagogue.

A parking tower is proposed to serve the parking requirements of the market on minimum footprint. It will also feature an observation area that can offer extraordi nary views to the visitors. The tower will also accommodate a large overhead water tank that will serve the market and can be also used as a water source for street fire hydrants in the immediate surrounding.

As the site area was expanded the market is now accessible from all the roads surrounding it helping it for smooth logistics and pedestrian traffic.

in

The market is segregated and zoned both vertically and horizontally. The wet market is adjacent to the ‘wet courtyard’ and dry market is adjacent to the ‘dry courtyard’. The dry market area is shifted to the first floor to invite diverse activities the

The first intervention is to revive the market pond to its original state which was reclaimed 40 years back.

In order to achieve the maximum potential of the of the site and for easy func tionality, some area near the pond & market complex is acquired. This helps in easy services and functionality of Market. Irrelevant old structures are removed to accommodate the new building.

The wet market architecture also follows a courtyard design. The roof line of the building is inspired by the old market roof line and other traditional building roofs nearby.

The Building is designed like a 3 sided courtyard struc ture. The central area features a dock where small boats by local fishermen can be brought in and they can sell their fish in that area.

The shops facing the street is dedicated for meat and poultry.

The pavilion is a steel structure around the market pond which hosts various functions. It functions as shaded walkway, shaded vending area, children’s play area etc. Apart from that, the pavilion plays a major role in maintaining the water quality in the pond as it has a fountain incorporated to it for aeration of pond water

The streets with the most number of vendors are identified and dedicated space is allocated for the vendors near to that street. This in result segregates every activities happening in a street resulting in a smooth circulation for all.

Location : Anand Vihar, New Delhi

The Urban Design study was completely based upon transit modes and the concept of interventions was Walkable City. A small patch of vacant municipal land is selected near the Karkaduma Metro Station in Anand Vihar, Delhi. Being the concept Walkable City, all streets and foot paths must be free from all kinds of obstructions that resist the smooth flow of pedestrians and vehicles. All kinds of activities in the streets must be removed which causes pedestrian and vehicular traffic congestion.

09

One of the main factors to all these congestions are street vendors and street hawkers who encroaches in to the footpaths and streets. The Local Food Square is a dedicated space for street hawkers and street food vendors. The proposal is multiple food squares in regular intervals in a locality depending on the local needs.

SITE PLAN Aerial view of the proposed Design

The proposed food plaza has a potential to act as a gateway to the slum area which has the potential to be developed to a local commer cial street in the future. The map below shows the proposed site and the slum area adjacent to the site and how the street network links to the site

Isometric hand sketch of the Row House Project type Architecture Design Semester : 4 (2017) Location : Hypothetical The project is a cluster a row mixed use row houses in a hypothetical site. Every building faces a non-motorized street. The street is identified as a commercial street with commercial activity for every home. Commercial activities include cafe, art gallery, book shop, nursery, pub, flower shop, saloons etc. Every building has a common recreational landscape area in the rear which can be accessed by the public as well as the residential owners. The recreational landscape is a 3.5 m high area from street level. Under the landscape area accommodates the common residential parking space. Every row house is 25m x 5m in plan and can have a maximum height of 15m. 10 -25 % of the total space can be alloted as commercial space and the rest as residen tial space. In this design the row house is a 3BHK residence with a small cafe as the commercial space. Typical Street Section. Recreational Landscape to the rear of Buildings. Car parking below the landscape. The aim of this design competition was to design a Railway Station and their precinct that can help users through improved circulation and decrease of conflict areas, thereby making it effective and efficient landmark public area in the city.

The project site is the Anand Vihar Junction Station of the Indian Railways. Northern Indian Railways started opera tions of this station in 2010. This railway station caters to major east-bound trains originating from here. This station is significantly locatedon the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border catering not only to the residents of Delhi, but also to the adjoining NCR city of Ghaziabad and other nearby cities of Uttar Pradesh. The design of the railway station is purely on a functional basis so as to provide a smooth passenger flow through out the Differentstation.levels and dedicated areas are provided for the main three activities happening in a railway station, that is arrivals, departures & waiting.

ZOHO corporations. The location of the site is in Tharuvai, a small village in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.

The client’s requirement was to design a campus that neatly blends into the village and its context. Therefore the design evolved with a concept inspired from the tamilian village houses, the muttram / court yards are introduced into the blocks as an integrated landscape and spill out area for the office spaces. The construction is a combination of modular prefab steel structure for the main office areas and concrete civil work for the Service and recreational buildings.

Tree belt - introduction of tree belt along the western edge over the mounts and along with mist irrigation would help screen the dust carried by the dry dusty winds present in site.
