Commander’s message

• Veterans Day history-1

As we approach this fifth month of the administrative year I invite you to proudly display your VFW attire; wear your well-deserved All American Post 1540 2020-2021 caps, your shirts, and even your own purchased clothing items with pride.

• Commander’s message-1 • PACT Act Passes - 2 • Installation Dinner - 2 • Photo Gallery - 3 • Upcoming events - 4

• Your 2022-2023 Board - 4 • Our Core Values - 4 • Meeting Location - 4 • Mailing Address - 4

Reach out to other veterans with a helping hand or invite them to attend our General Meetings. It’s

surprising how many veterans and family members of veterans admire these caps, making it easy to strike up a conversation. I am finding that some veterans just like talking with other veterans and sharing their stories or their lives with you. Don’t forget to ask if they belong to VFW; many are life members, but don’t realize the many benefits of being in a local Post such as the camaraderie, or the sense of Ohana that we have in our Post. Much thanks for all that you have accomplished during these first four months of this administrative year. -Commander Gary Westernoff

Veterans Day Celebration The U.S. gave universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day was officially recognized in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. It became a national holiday 12 years later by similar Congressional action. The first celebration using the term Veterans Day occurred in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1947. Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized "National Veterans Day," which included a parade and other festivities, to honor all veterans. The event was held on November 11, then designated Armistice Day. In 1954, Congress passed the bill that President Eisenhower signed proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day.
