Case Study - Georgia’s Story

P E T-X i C A S E S T U DY Georgia Taylor, a recent school leaver, found herself unsure of her next step after completing her year 11 exams.

GEORGIA’S STORY

Then, as Covid-19 forced the nation into lockdown, Georgia’s future ­became even more unclear and her confidence took a knock. Georgia was motivated to not sit around and bide her time during the pandemic, and decided to take action.

She reached out to PET-Xi via her school as she looked for a flexible way to access higher education whilst isolating at home.

Support provided by PET-Xi Georgia was enrolled on the Positive Directions programme at PET-Xi, achieving five Level 2 qualifications in Health and Social Care, Team Leading, Customer Services, IT User skills and Personal Development for Employability via remote learning classes.

PET-Xi also enabled Georgia to follow her passion for dancing during the lockdown by putting her in touch with PET-XI trainer Ellie Wickett, who is also a professional dancer and dance teacher.

Leia Welland, Senior Contract Manager for PET-Xi, said: “By offering these online classes to Georgia, it enabled us to not only support her learning in a safe way from the comfort of her home, but also her confidence and wellbeing.

“Ellie, who is one of our PET-Xi mentors, is also a professional dance teacher and as this was Georgia’s passion, carried out weekly dance sessions with her over Zoom and supported her in preparation for her college dance auditions.”

Outcomes The PET-Xi Positive Directions programme has allowed Georgia to boost her resilience and pick up a number of transferable skills in preparation for further education and the workplace.

Georgia is now enrolled at Sutton Coldfield College where she has passed her first year A-Levels studying Law, Psychology and English Language.

Leia said: “Georgia has been an incredible student showing resilience, determination and dedication throughout her time with us. Her ­confidence has grown so much and it was a pleasure to have her on our programme.

The support provided by PET-Xi has also encouraged Georgia, who has autism, to secure part-time employment in the hospitality industry, where she makes use of the communication skills and confidence which she developed during her time on the Positive Directions programme.

Samantha, Georgia’s mother, said: “The care and enthusiasm we have seen from PET-Xi has been above and beyond what we could have hoped for in supporting Georgia’s next step.

“They have ensured the course has been both enjoyable and a ­ ccessible for Georgia, and she has been able to develop a range of crucial skills in a relaxed and comfortable setting. The fact that they have encouraged Georgia to follow her passion for dancing and p ­ rovided a platform for her to do so has been really impressive.

“The whole experience has opened up so many possibilities for Georgia and ensured that she emerged from a tough period with the confidence to take on new challenges and the skills to back it up.”

Together we work as one Georgia’s training was part of the Positive Directions programme funded by Skills Training UK, which gives young people aged between 16 and 24 the chance to access full Level 2 Qualifications in IT, Customer S ­ ervice, Health and Social Care, Team Leading, Employability and Maths and English support, delivered remotely whilst still maintaining PET-Xi’s unique, engaging and energetic dynamic.
