Chamber kicks goals in 2018 Tony Solin Welcome to another edition of Chamber Connections.

It has been a busy start to the year for the Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce, with our schedule full of returning and new events in 2018 for the business community to access.

Our Malibu Fresh Essentials Long Table Lunch and Big Brews Beach Party were again an overwhelming success

this year, with the events getting bigger and better every year.

It has been great to see Rockingham and Kwinana’s business community turn out for our business breakfasts, which would not be possible without the support of the City of Rockingham.

Dale Alcock’s talk at our most recent breakfast was a source of motivation for our local business leaders.

Our new Chamber Chatter events have led to local businesses improving

their networks and collaborating, while the upcoming RKCC Mineral Resources Regional Business Awards will be another highlight.

The Fair Work Ombudsman recently conducted two campaigns and audited 148 businesses in Southern Perth.

Alarmingly 39 per cent of these businesses in Armadale, Kwinana and Rockingham were found not to be complying with their obligations.

The future is looking bright for the City of Kwinana, with a number of exciting opportunities starting to gain momentum, putting the spotlight on Kwinana and catapulting it onto the global stage.

The city is establishing itself as the new “lithium valley” due to two exciting projects, the Tianqi Lithium Plant, which is in stage two of construction, and the recent announcement that Western Australian Lithium is poised to build a new refinery in Kwinana, creating more than 700 jobs following the signing of an option to lease with LandCorp recently.

This is just a portion of the 37,383 direct jobs that are expected to be created in Kwinana in the next 20 years thanks to the State Government’s significant commitment to start planning for a new port in Kwinana, made in late 2017.

The Westport Taskforce has now been formed and work is already taking place towards completing the planning, development and growth of the Outer Harbour freight vision.

Another exciting opportunity is the Kwinana Waste to Energy facility, which will be an important renewable energy project and is expected to be the first of its kind constructed in the nation.

When complete, the facility will divert up to half of the residential rubbish collected from landfill sites and generate electricity to power up to 65,000 households.

These partnerships further prove that Kwinana is a community built on the foundation that industrial and residential communities are not mutually exclusive and this continued level of interest helps the city to achieve robust economic, social and environmental outcomes.

City striving to secure investment Barry Sammels Over the past two years, the Investment Attraction Team, in line with the City of Rockingham’s Economic Development Strategy, has been pursuing opportunities that support major investment in the region.

The team has also actively developed international economic and cultural partnerships which encourage ongoing sustainable business that needs significant additional supply and growth of commercial and industrial land and buildings.

Specific activities have included the promotion of various industry sectors, including industrial and commercial business requirements for commercial occupation, and a review of development possibilities within the central business precinct.

Significant effort and progress has also been made on attracting an international-class hotel to the waterfront precinct.

As a result of an increase in new major investment and industrial activity in the region, demand is also expected to increase for other products and services, primarily delivered through small business.

This increase in demand is likely to cross all sectors of industry.

The Renaissance Technopole, housed in the disused engineering faculty in the Murdoch University campus on Dixon Road, is one such project that promotes and encourages the development of sustainable activities which will create demand for newly created jobs and investment.

The Technopole is a dedicated centre of high-tech manufacturing and information-based industry sectors which will enable the transfer of French

intellectual property to Australian industry. Several groups of French industry representatives have toured the facility and are keen to capitalise on the opportunities it presents.

The City is excited about building long-term working relations with major international players and recognises that this kind of collaboration will deliver sustained economic benefits.

Most recently, the Technopole was visited by Ed Husic, the shadow minister for employment services, workforce participation and future of work and also shadow minister for the digital economy (2016–present), and Federal member for Brand Madeleine King.

The Technopole is one element in the City’s larger Rockingham Renaissance project, which aims to capitalise on the many features, advantages and benefits of the city’s location and resources for international partners seeking to expand into the Australian and Indo-Asian spheres.

The City of Rockingham recently co-hosted a forum at Parliament House with the West Australian European Business Association and French Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to showcase the Rockingham Renaissance project to high-level delegates from Europe and prominent members of the State Government and business community.

presented by the project. From a major projects point of view, stage, one of the Rockingham Beach Foreshore Revitalisation is about to begin.

This stage will comprise works in three distinct areas: Railway Terrace, the beach plaza and the boardwalk.

Works will begin on the Railway Terrace area in mid-June and continue until mid-December.

To minimise interruption to businesses during the peak summer period, there will then be a break in construction until mid-February, 2019.

Stage one is expected to be finished entirely by October, 2019.

The revitalised Rockingham Beach foreshore will be better for the community, better for visitors, and better for business.

With new chief executive Michael Parker taking the reins in early August, the City of Rockingham is looking forward to an exciting new chapter in its development as one of WA’s most rapidly growing metropolitan local governments.

The City will continue to work closely with the Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce to explore new opportunities and capitalise on the economic potential of this region for business and development.

The City will also continue supporting the work of the RKCC through initiatives such as the Key Leaders in Business breakfast series and the annual Regional Business Awards.

The region’s business community will come together in August to celebrate another 12 months, with the prestigious Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce Business Awards set to take place.

The event, sponsored by Mineral Resources, will be held at the Gary Holland Community Centre in Rockingham and celebrate the achievements of local businesses.

Nominations are now open across eight categories, with all businesses, not just chamber members, able to put their hands up for recognition.

This year marks 30 years of the event and follows on from a successful and well-attended night in 2017.

Businesses can nominate in the solo business, micro business, SME business or corporate business category.

There will also be awards for the outstanding corporate community event, tourism or hospitality excellence, business person of the year and young business person of the year.

Chamber chief executive Tony Solin said there had been a record number of nominees last year and about 200 people attended on the night.

Prestigious award for mediator Cecilia Allen Baldivis volunteer and mediator Sarah Blake was named the recipient of the prestigious Resolution Institute Michael Klug award, recognising her conflict resolution work in Aboriginal communities throughout WA. The Michael Klug award is presented annually by the Resolution Institute Board to any person or people who have in the previous 12 months contributed towards the peaceful resolutions of conflict in the best interests of the community.

Mrs Blake has more than 20 years experience working in complex multi-party mediation and cross-cultural conflict situations both domestically and internationally.

With a focus on empowering parties to develop the capacity to make good decisions during times of conflict, her work is about creating sustainable solutions that make sense for parties.

Her work is exemplified by a community mediation in 2016-2017 in the East Kimberley.

Ms Blake said mediation could

provide a way forward for communities caught in the cycle of violence and mediation was increasingly called upon by police, courts and government when community violence escalated and resolution seemed impossible. “Cross-cultural mediation, when designed with authority from both the western and traditional systems of dispute resolution, can have a powerful and transformative impact on communities,� she said. “This is a long-term commitment that requires support from all stakeholders.� Mrs Blake said she

hoped the award would help raise awareness of the important role mediation could play in responding to community conflict and violence.

Positive outcomes cannot be achieved unless we all work together,� she said. “At the heart of peace-making is the need to respect the experiences, knowledge and systems that each party brings to the negotiation. “As mediators it is our responsibility to hold this space so parties can focus on resolution.�

In a statement from the Resolution

Institute Board, the panel of judges found Mrs Blake’s experience and peace-making skills were the deciding factors in a tight field of talented candidates. “As a result of Sarah’s hard work and innovative approach to peace-making, a community has re-established traditional peace-making mechanisms and has designed a cross-culturally appropriate mediation model,� the statement said.

Mature jobseekers Gareth McKnight Rockingham and Kwinana’s mature-aged jobseekers will have the chance to meet potential employers at a career expo next month.

Hosted by the Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce, the City of Rockingham and Council on the Ageing WA, the 2018 Mature Aged Career Expo will take place at the Gary Holland Community Centre on June 1.

The idea for the event originated after the success of the chamber’s

2017 Shape Your Future Youth Expo last year, which attracted more than 600 jobseekers and employers.

This event has been designed to provide a one-stop-shop for jobseekers and the mature-aged in the region who are aiming to find career pathways and explore job opportunities.

Key areas of focus will be employment opportunities, employment support and training.

Chamber executive assistant Diana White said the expo would be

beneficial for both jobseekers and employers. “Based upon the response from our youth expo last year, it has been identified that there is a very large component of mature-aged jobseekers,” she said.

“The expo is an opportunity for those that are struggling to find work or looking to reskill, people interested in career changes and business owners who want to source employees.

travelling around Australia are perhaps bypassing Rockingham and Kwinana because of a lack of facilities.

“Having people stay here in their caravans or campers trailers, and then spending money on restaurants, tours and at local businesses would be a boost.”

Rockingham RV Centre owner Jim Groves said he was asked frequently by tourists and people travelling through the city about

caravan park facilities. “Every day people ring and ask where the dump sites are; people are driving straight past us and going to Mandurah,” he said.

“When tourists are travelling they will get onto Google and find the dump sites. Wherever they are, that is where they are going to stay. The more we have got, the better off we are.

“We need a couple of caravan parks that are serious about it.”

“If Rockingham could attract a new caravan park the business community would certainly benefit,” he said.

“There is a feeling that people

Workshops for smaller firms Gareth McKnight Rockingham and Kwinana businesses will have the opportunity to attend a host of new workshops soon, which will be focused on helping sole traders and small companies.

The Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce has received a grant from the Rotary Club of Rockingham to provide the service for the business community.

This will entail a number of free training workshops to help small businesses.

the workshops were being developed and would be delivered in the near future.

“The idea is to talk about things like basic finance requirements for small businesses, human resources, information technology and legal issues,” Mr Solin said.

“For small business owners these things can take away time from actually running a company, so the chamber is here to help. “The free events will be another benefit of being a chamber member and (businesses will be able to) tap into the knowledge of some of the businesses in our network.”

reins at the club early last year, Mr Dawkins said there had been a strong focus on boosting membership and marketing one of the regions finest courses.

“We’ve got to make sure people understand that it’s here because once they do come here, they realise how good it is,” he said.

“It really sells itself once people get out there.”

Brekkie pulls big names Gareth McKnight The Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce business breakfasts continue to draw crowds, with the third meeting of 2018 to take place next month.

Hosted in partnership with the City of Rockingham, the quarterly events have attracted some well-respected speakers over the past few years.

The first business breakfast of 2018 took place at the Gary Holland Community Centre in Rockingham in February.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia senior economist Nathan Viles gave attendees an overview of the State’s economic prospects.

In April, home builder and Fremantle Dockers president Dale Alcock was the keynote speaker at the Clipper Inn. Mr Alcock told attendees how he started Dale Alcock Homes from scratch and, over the past 30 years, had turned the business into one of Perth’s most reputable building companies.

Mr Alcock conveyed his leadership style, saying there was no good or bad news — simply news — and leaders reacted appropriately to the daily trials

and tribulations of business.

Chamber chief executive Tony Solin said the feedback from Mr Alcock’s speech was excellent.

Rick Hart will speak at the next event on June 26.

“Rick Hart has been in the retail whitegoods business for most of

his life — he is extremely experienced and a great speaker,” Mr Solin said.

“He can pass on a lot of experience and knowledge and will talk about things such as customer service, sales and the current trends in the market.”

fifth year in a row. Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce chief executive Tony Solin said customers did not need to leave the local area to purchase a new vehicle.

“Having so many quality car dealerships in close proximity

drives competition and is excellent for the region,” he said.

“Some of our members are being recognised across the State and country for their performance, which is more good news for Rockingham and Kwinana.”

Car business gives back Gareth McKnight Rockingham Mazda is one of the newer car yards in the region but has made an impression so far with its work in the community.

Having opened in April 2016 as the company’s first purpose-built site in WA, the multi-million dollar facility is based at 22 Smeaton Way in Rockingham.

Marketing and customer relations manager Steve Morice said a shake-up of management last year, led by dealer principal Darren Padley, had led to a focus on giving back to the community.

“We don’t want to be an isolated business — we want to be part of the community and part of Rockingham and Kwinana,” Mr Morice said.

“We want to help the local community in what we do but also in what we can offer back.”

Mr Morice said Mazda was constantly evolving, could boast the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market and would release the CX8 model later this year.

“Because Mazda is a premium brand, there is a preconception that we are more expensive than it

“Mazda are always developing — we don’t wait for three years and bring out a new model.”

Mr Morice said Rockingham’s car yards were a drawcard. “We are still missing a couple (of brands)

that we would like to see in the area because that means that people don’t have to go outside of this area to find a car,” he said.

“It is good to be on board with the chamber for networking — we are starting to spread the word through them and offering special advantages to chamber members.”

Toyotaways Rockingham made a stellar start to the year after it was crowned the Toyota 2017 metropolitan dealer of the year in March.

Fending off competition from Mandurah Toyota and Grand Toyota in Wangara, Toyotaways Rockingham was able to bring home the award.

Having come close as runners-up in 2013, Toyotaways Rockingham general manager Graham McAullay said the win was a landmark moment for the dealership and thanked the business’ loyal customers for their support.

“There was relief, there was pride and excitement,” Mr McAullay said.

“We were a little bit shocked because we are one of the smaller dealers in the metro area and we’ve taken it out ahead of the big boys.”

The community was treated to a weekend of sumptuous food and entertainment on the sand when the Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce Long Table Lunch and beach party took place in March.

In its fourth year, the long table lunch has become a regular fixture on the calendar for socialites, residents and people from further afield.

Premier Mark McGowan attended this year, along with a handful of West Coast Eagles players and representatives, while the 500-strong crowd enjoyed top-notch entertainment and local produce.

of Rockingham and Kwinana, was again overwhelmingly positive.

“The long table lunch was once again a sell-out for the fourth year in a row thanks to the strong support of businesses and the backing of the City of Rockingham,” he said. “The RKCC staff and committee would like to say a big thank you to major sponsor Malibu Fresh Essentials and to the local businesses that offered up their services and time.”

The chamber also donated $10,000 from the event to Rockingham charity Christians Ready Equipped and Willing, which helps homeless people in the region.

Mr Solin said the beach party was also well received, with 400-500 people in attendance making it a “great success”.
