It’s snowmen’s time to shine at this year’s Perth Santa Claus Parade

Santa Paws brings Festive Cheer to Perth News – The building at 39 Gore St. E, the former office of The Perth Courier newspaper, is filled with festive cheer these days. The sad and forlorn empty store front has been rejuvenated this month thanks to the girls at Fall River Fashion. Owner Michele Murphy said she wanted to expand her store (located next door) to include some old fashioned Christmas cheer. “I thought the block needed a little Christmas cheering up,” she said. She’s pictured with her Shih Tzu, Maggie.

News – There’s only room for one Santa Claus at this parade – but there will be enough snowmen to make a snowstorm during this year’s Perth and District Santa Claus Parade of Lights. “It’s very magical at that witching hour when it goes from dusk to the lights coming on,” said Sheri Mahon-Fournier, chair of the parade committee, in gleeful anticipation, during a telephone interview this past Monday, Nov. 24. Planning for this year’s parade started on Sept. 1, and “the snowman suggestions came from someone in the community. We thought it would be very interesting to work with.” One of the challenges in finding a new theme each year is making such an idea accessible to the different groups that like to participate. “We like to keep them simple,” she said. “They (participants) don’t need to have a theme represented on their float,” in order to take part. “It’s all about participation.” The parade will form up at The Factory complex, 40 Sunset Blvd., on Saturday, Dec. 6, and Mahon-Fournier is calling for all participants to be in the parking

lot by 4 p.m., with pre-judging taking place between 4 and 4:15 p.m. The parade will leave the complex at 5 p.m. sharp, proceeding down Wilson Street, taking a left on Foster Street, then right onto Gore Street East. It’s not lost on the organizers that this is also the season of giving, especially to the less fortunate. The Salvation Army will be collecting toys and food along the parade route, with easily identifiable volunteers walking along near the head of the parade. They will also be accepting monetary donations. There are first place ribbons for the eight categories being judged, including: • Industrial (industries) • Commercial (small business, retailers) • Non-commercial (churches, small groups, etc.) • Schools (two classes, elementary and other) • Animal (animal entry or any entry pulled by an animal) • Service clubs • Individuals (walkers, bikers, roller bladers, wind surfers). The parade usually sees, on average, between 60 and 70 entries, and while some parades, like the Carleton Place parade, have been known to clock in at over 90 min-

utes long, the Perth parade “isn’t drawn out,” she said, usually getting the job done in about an hour, start-to-finish, by “slowly and efficiently (moving) without a lot of gaps. It lets people get out and enjoy the parade. It’s a nice, workable time.” There will also be free hot chocolate and hot dogs to all parade participants afterwards at the Queen Elizabeth Public School, 80 Wilson St. E. There are a few rules that floats must follow. Firstly, Santa Claus always brings up the rear, so, having more than one Santa in the parade might be confusing to younger children. He may be able to cover off deliveries the whole world over in one night, but being in two places at the same time on Wilson Street may still be a bit of a stretch. Secondly, while it may be chilly that evening, no open flames are allowed, so, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’s “Burning Love” Tiki extravaganza may have its world debut elsewhere – so his nose will have to suffice for illumination. Thirdly, while other parades may do this, the Perth parade has been very strict in enforcing its
