2018 Foundation Annual Report

The Role of the Foundation.

Each year, new families join the Perth College community and it is important that we provide them with an opportunity to understand the role of the Perth College Foundation. It is also a reminder to the broader Perth College community of our work to support the School’s mission.

The Perth College Foundation was launched in 2012 with the aim of building a culture of giving amongst the broad Perth College community as it was recognised by the then School Council that fees alone would not allow the necessary ongoing development of the School. In particular, the holistic education which underpinned the aims of the founding Sisters is sustainable only if the School is able to continuously adapt, and ideally lead, to meet the constantly challenging educational requirements demanded by an ever-changing society into which our students graduate.

Given that the Foundation is a very young entity, it has been necessary that the Board focuses predominantly on building long-term financial security. Obviously this has meant that we have been keen to build a healthy capital base which will form the building blocks for the future and the earnings from which the Foundation will be able to support the School in meeting its long-term goals. In particular, the Foundation has been committed to building the Scholarship base which opens the door to a Perth College education for many girls who would otherwise not have these opportunities.

Whilst keeping our sights firmly on the future, the Foundation has also worked closely with the School in support of major initiatives and redevelopments over the last few years. Since the fundraising appeal for the new Excelsior House fit-out concluded last year, it is therefore timely to remind our community of the Foundation’s outlays thus far to assist in the optimisation of the learning experience at Perth College:

The Foundation will therefore continue to work on two fronts – building long-term financial security and supporting the School on specific priorities from time to time. In doing so, the Foundation is driven by the enduring aim that Perth College remains at the forefront of education and is able to empower its students so they graduate as confident contributors to society. Our guiding principles therefore remain as follows:

The primary objective of the Foundation is to build long-term financial security for the School in order that Perth College will always be able to offer first-class educational facilities, a quality learning environment and the maintenance of its strong sense of community, thereby ensuring the continued provision of exceptional opportunities for all our students.

This will be achieved by judicious allocation of funds, over time, for:

• Capital works projects, land acquisitions and refurbishments in support of the School’s longterm Master Plan and;

• Expansion of our scholarship base to ensure that the School maintains its richness and diversity by providing opportunities to deserving girls from all walks of life who might otherwise be unable to enjoy a Perth College education.

Reflections from the Principal.

Perth College is incredibly fortunate to have a strong identity and a community that is genuinely invested in the success of the School and its students. The community has its foundation in the history of Perth College, where, from the very beginning, its staff, students, parents and alumni have been proactive in giving forward with a committed sense of social responsibility.

Since joining the School this year, I have been incredibly impressed with the commitment, passion and work completed by the Perth College Foundation and the sense of community spirit within the Perth College community. The 2018 programs emulate our key values of being capable, caring and courageous. As the Foundation’s work grows, so do the possibilities for our girls.

For me, what the Foundation seeks to achieve is in line with the values of our world-class InsideOut program. This program uses a positive psychology model and self-leadership framework to empower girls to become self-aware, be the best person they can be, to flourish, and to contribute to the wellbeing of others. Through self-leadership, the program empowers girls to find their strengths, develop resilience, build confidence, exhibit leadership, and display social and emotional intelligence. Four major components of the program include:

• Growing engagement

• Relationships and social connections

• Meaning

• Accomplishment

The Perth College Foundation has certainly led the way to model to our girls these positive, powerful messages. As we reflect on 2018, we can see how it has engaged the community through appeals such as the Excelsior House interior fitout, built relationships through programs such as the Hawkesbury Club, and provided us with a deep sense of meaning behind the work that is being conducted.

Thank you to our community members who have contributed to the deep sense of purpose reflected in the work and accomplishments of the Perth College Foundation by giving so generously. I hope you have discovered a sense of deep meaning, relationships, engagement and accomplishment. It gives me great comfort to know we have the support of such a strong community.

Message from the Chair.

There was a very moving moment at the Commissioning of our new Principal, Helen Aguiar, when Helen thanked her Portuguese immigrant parents for the sacrifices they had made to ensure that she received an excellent education. Most of the guests were visibly moved and, in reflecting on the reasons for this, I concluded that our collective thoughts had no doubt turned to our own parents, many of whom had made similar sacrifices for their daughters to receive a unique Perth College education. We are conscious that this is undoubtedly also the case for many current parents.

Our Archbishop (and one time Chaplain of PC), The Most Reverend Kay Goldsworthy AO, then delivered a homily on ‘Change’ and referred particularly to the chapter ‘A Decade of Challenge’ in Built on Faith, the official history of Perth College. In subsequently referring to these writings, I was reminded of the significant educational and societal changes that occurred in the decade which followed the Sisters’ exit from Perth College. For my generation having just left school, the times saw dramatic changes in the way women perceived themselves and their future lives. Significant change was, therefore, a priority for the then Council, Principal and Staff at Perth College if they were to prepare graduating students for the necessary independence and adaptability required for a society in continual flux. This chapter and the next then outlined the significant changes wrought by successive Principals to ensure that “…Perth College was relevant to successive generations of girls; each new Principal brought a personal style and a way of interpreting the traditions and ethos of the School which interacted with the needs of the time. It is part of the dynamic way in which a school evolves.”

To my mind, the link between these two addresses is that parents continue to strive for a Perth College education for their daughters, as progressive education is delivered within the guiding values established by our Christian heritage. Constructive change is mandatory and the School family will expect our new Principal to bring fresh eyes to the life of Perth College and build positively on everything that has gone before.

The Foundation is committed to assisting those inevitable future changes to create an ever improving learning environment on the basis that we are aligned to the School’s vision that education empowers our students to take control of their lives and become a force for good within their communities. Much has been achieved in the Foundation’s short life and I am particularly grateful for the support of my fellow Board members and our executive. As a group we have been particularly encouraged by the 2018 year-end position which saw the assets of the Foundation grow from $12,396,511 in 2017 to $14,840,100 which forms a solid base from which to continue the planned growth of the Foundation’s capital base to meet future needs.

Obviously, the strength of the Foundation and the work we are able to do for the School is attributed entirely to the wonderfully generous Perth College extended family. The contributions, both large and small, through 2018 have been testament to the power of a committed school community. Our gratitude is extended to all those who support the Foundation and you are assured that we are fully committed to ensuring that Perth College continues to inspire generations of girls through exposure to world class educational excellence within an inclusive and vibrant community.

Sincere thanks to you all.

She holds a double major in Advertising and PR, and a post-graduate degree in Marketing. Natalie is currently on the Educate Plus WA Chapter committee and looks after its fundraising stream and communications.

Finance.

A major part of the Foundation’s work is the stewardship of funds. In order to fulfil its long-term objectives for the security of the School, the Foundation has therefore kept its sights on growing a healthy capital base which, over the longer term, will return a reliable ongoing income stream whilst also ensuring that we support the School in meeting shorter term initiatives.

In order to meet both the short and long-term key objectives, the Investment Committee of the Foundation has continued to work closely with the appointed Investment Manager, JB Were, to review and refine these processes and the charts below capture the growth in the Foundation’s net asset position as well as the donation and income revenue for the 12 months ended December 2018.

The pie charts show the income and donation revenue for each Fund for 2018 and clearly demonstrate the significant impact of bequest funds (directed to the General Fund) and endowment funds (directed to the Scholarship Fund) throughout the year. The details of these extraordinarily generous gifts to the Foundation by wonderfully supportive members of the School community are profiled elsewhere in this report.

The bar chart illustrates the growth of the individual funds within the Foundation from inception in 2012 and, due significantly to the bequest and endowment funds received during the 2018 year, the net asset position now stands at $14.8 million, which represents growth of 19.7 per cent over 2017.

Impact.

Living Generously – Growing the Foundation’s Scholarships

If ever two women lived generously, it is the two donors who approached the Foundation separately in 2018 with the intention of establishing perpetual scholarships. They are Old Girl Christine (Barnetson) Morrison (1965 Leaver) and Honorary Old Girl and our previous Principal Jenny Ethell. The Foundation’s Scholarship Fund has been substantially enhanced by these extraordinarily generous donations and we are grateful that Christine and Jenny have allowed us to profile them and the scholarships they have endowed.

The Christine Barnetson Scholarship

Many Old Girls who were at PC in the 1960s will remember Christine as a first-class all-round sportswoman, but it was her selection as a member of the Australian swimming team for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics which ensured her permanent place in Perth College sporting history. After Christine graduated with a Bachelor of Education and Diploma of Physical Education from the University of Western Australia (and later a Masters in Education Administration from the University of New England, Armidale), she taught in the WA government school system before taking up an academic position at the WA College of Advanced Education which subsequently became Edith Cowan University. After a number of years, Christine then became part of the fledgling Overseas Student initiative at Edith Cowan and spent much of her time establishing education partnerships offshore.

Christine is, therefore, well versed in education generally but it is her familiarity with the challenges of rural families that prompted Christine and her husband Kim to provide a tuition and boarding scholarship for eligible country students. The scholarship will be offered to one student at a time and will apply from the year of award until Year 12, based on continued effort and achievement. The Foundation was delighted to be able to award the 2019 scholarship to Keeley Gelmi and clearly this has meant a great deal to Keeley and her family.

When asked why she had decided to establish the scholarship, Christine responded that she viewed herself as a lifelong ‘PC girl’. She valued her time at the School and the friendships forged had sustained her ever since. Christine also added, “If I have the means, then why not?” What a wonderfully generous philosophy!

The Wulili Scholarship

Jenny Ethell’s significant contribution to Perth College over 16 years as Principal is well-known and documented.

What is now added to this profile is the establishment of the Wulili Scholarship by the Ethell family as a legacy of Jenny’s time as Principal at the School and a desire to make a difference. Jenny indicated to the Foundation that she and her family had a strong desire to continue the work of the Sisters who founded Perth College. In particular, she advised that she would like the funds to be allocated for the purpose of giving Indigenous girls the benefit of a Perth College education and to become inspirational role models for others.

The Wulili name has special significance for the Ethell family. It comes from the Wulli Wulli (Wulili) tribe who occupied the Burnett-Dawson region of Queensland and Jenny and her husband Dougall’s son-in-law is a direct descendent of the Wulili people. It is also the region where Dougall was raised so it has an enduring legacy which the Foundation will honour.

The Foundation is grateful to Jenny and her family for their generosity and we were delighted to be able to award the scholarship for 2019 so that Jenny could congratulate the girls personally before her departure. At Jenny’s request, we agreed to split the scholarship on this occasion and Isabella Slade and Emily Kimm are the worthy beneficiaries of a Wulili Scholarship for 2019 and 2020 when they graduate.

Following the announcement of the Wulili Scholarship, the Foundation was subsequently thrilled to receive donations to augment the Wulili Scholarship funds from both a long supportive benefactor and Old Girl and the Friends of Perth College as acknowledgement of Jenny’s long contribution to the School - a special thank you for these very special gestures.

As a consequence of the establishment of these additional scholarships in 2018, the Foundation is delighted to report that it is now able to award a total of 18 scholarships each year from 2019. The steady growth of the Scholarship Fund is an important part of the Foundation’s work and is directly aligned with its core objectives. It will therefore remain a central element of future fundraising and we extend sincere thanks to all our donors.

Raffle Supports Sun Smart Project

The Perth College Foundation launched its inaugural Tuition Fees Raffle in 2018 and incorporated valued feedback from the community in its decision to offer it for a second time.

The 2019 Tuition Fees Raffle was launched in Term Three 2018. The raffle included a first prize of $15,000, a second prize of $10,000 and a third prize of $5,000, with winners to receive the prize amount off their 2019 Tuition fees.

The draw took place on Monday 3 December 2018 in the Principal’s office through an authorised random number generator. First prize was awarded to Year 7 parent Alisa Stone, second prize to Kindy parent Vanee Manikkam and third prize to Year 6 parent Sharon Sheppeard.

On recommendation from the Principal, the Board had agreed that any surplus funds remaining after the prize was issued would be used to purchase shade structures for the School’s Sun Smart project; these are currently being installed in the Junior School area.

The raffle initiative was launched in 2017 as a low-cost fundraising opportunity for our community. However, with a reduction in ticket sales and consequentially funds from the 2019 Raffle, the Board has reluctantly decided to suspend the concept for the time being.

Patricia’s Wishes Honoured

Mabel Patricia Pidgeon MBE (nee Daw) was awarded an MBE in the civil division for public service in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 1979 for her role working as lady-in-waiting and chief-of-staff for Dame Alexandra Hasluck. Lady Hasluck (also a Perth College Old Girl) was wife of Sir Paul Hasluck, who was Governor-General.

Mrs Pidgeon was a passionate and connected Old Girl and in 2004 donated her personal ‘Hasluck Collection’ to the School, along with funds for a cabinet to display these items. Mrs Pidgeon sadly passed away on 16 March 2017 and left another generous gift from her estate to Perth College Foundation.

In line with Mrs Pidgeon’s request, the Foundation immediately expended funds towards the School Chapel including the upgrade of curtains, new altar fronts, a Yamaha Digital Piano and Organ conservation work. Patricia’s gift is indeed humbling and we are sure that she would approve the use to which we have directed a portion of her bequest as she clearly viewed the Chapel as being central to the spiritual life of the School. The Pidgeon Bequest will be forever remembered and honoured with a plaque in the Chapel.

Scholarship Fund Donor Breakfast

In recognition of the ongoing support by the School community of the Foundation’s commitment to growing its Scholarships base, Foundation Chair Karen Field and Jenny Ethell hosted a donor breakfast at the Mount Lawley Golf Club in August 2018.

Attendee numbers were wonderful and the individual panel presentations and joint discussion by two past and two present scholarship recipients were inspiring. The panel included both city and country scholarship recipients who shared with the audience their individual stories of how a Perth College education has shaped their lives and given them the confidence and the enhanced educational opportunities to follow their dreams.

We are immensely grateful for the generosity of our school family, as Scholarships remain central to the values of Perth College and its sense of community. This event allowed the Foundation to demonstrate to donors the significant impact their support has had on the lives of this impressive group of young women and the sense of re-invigorated interest in this important initiative was palpable amongst the guests.

The Foundation remains committed to growing its scholarship base into the future so that many more young women can similarly benefit from a Perth College education and the establishment of two more scholarships, enabled by generous benefactors, is detailed elsewhere in this Report.

Jacaranda Society

‘Recognising benefactors who have left a gift in their Will’

A small group of our Jacaranda Society members attended the High Achievers’ Assembly in January 2019 to celebrate the 2018 students’ successes in their WACE examinations.

Afternoon tea with the students and Principal Helen Aguiar provided a wonderful opportunity for the girls to share with the members their plans for 2019 and beyond. The variety of courses the girls have available to them or are studying impressed the members immensely.

The Hawkesbury Club Sundowner

The annual Hawkesbury Club event for the School’s past parents, past staff and past Council members was held at Perth College’s new facility, Excelsior House, in October 2018.

Foundation Chair Karen Field shared the Foundation’s achievements for 2018 while Jenny Ethell reflected on her time at PC and how appreciative she was of everyone’s support of the School over the years.

Throughout the afternoon many guests took the opportunity to farewell Jenny before she departed Perth College at the end of 2018.

2018 Achievements.

The Foundation set itself the following projects during 2018 in order to meet the longer term objectives of its Strategic Plan. The report card can be summarised as follows:

o Website Upgrade

The Board determined that the Foundation’s web pages were in need of an urgent upgrade to provide easier navigation, timely updating of relevant information and provision of a reliable online donation portal. Of course, this was required to be undertaken in conjunction with the School and we were delighted that the project was completed and launched by the end of 2018. Monitoring through 2019 will be undertaken to ensure that the upgrade meets our expectations. The Foundation will now seek provision of a recurring debit facility.

o Improving our Connections

The Board had identified that the Foundation needed to better understand and improve our connections with the broader school community in order to build a sustainable future. Considerable effort has gone into improving our database which is shared with the School. Whilst progress has been made there is still work to do, particularly in locating alumni pre-1980 as those records are significantly incomplete.

o Development of a Whole-of-School Fundraising Plan

As part of consultations with representatives of the School community, it was apparent to the Board that there was some confusion about the roles of the various fundraising arms within the School. Following liaison with the School Executive, it was agreed that an audit be undertaken so that any recommendations related to rationalisation of effort and avoidance of duplication would be based on reliable information. The results of the School’s audit were presented to the Board at end 2018 and confirmed concerns by the parties involved. Accordingly, follow-up work will be undertaken by the School working party in 2019.

o Development of a long-term Fundraising Strategy

Clearly it is necessary for the Foundation to work closely with Perth College Council to ensure that our fundraising strategy is appropriately aligned with the School’s Master Plan.

More formal lines of communication have therefore been established as part of this effort and through this consultation process a fundraising exercise in relation to the Boarding House refurbishment was mounted for the first half of 2019 and directed in most part to the past and present boarding community.

o Fully Achieved Partially Achieved Not Achieved

Future Focus.

Each year the Foundation sets itself discrete projects in support of the longer term vision. The following projects have been identified for concentrated effort in 2019:

• The Young Old Girls’ Project

Both the Foundation and the Old Girls’ Association recognise that maintaining connections with all our alumni is critical in terms of ongoing support for the future work of the School in preparing girls for an ever-changing world.

We have, therefore, come together to develop an exciting project that recognises that our Younger Old Girls have special priorities during their 20’s and 30’s, which generally revolve around their careers and their young families. The aim of this project is to encourage this group to stay connected by ’in-kind’ skills-based events, mentoring and an Old Girls versus students social sporting fixture. Through this project, they will have the opportunity to invest in the next generation of remarkable women consistent with PC’s ‘giving back’ philosophy.

2019 will see the initiation of a pilot project which involves the establishment of a Young Old Girls’ Advisory Committee (YOGA) and the implementation of one or two YOGA focused events. The Foundation and the Old Girls Association will evaluate the pilot project at the end of 2019 and it is hoped they will be able to jointly build on this initial effort.

• Scholarships

Whilst the Foundation recognises that scholarships require significant funding, the expansion of scholarship numbers remains a key objective as we assist the School in maintaining its richness and diversity. It will therefore remain a priority for the Foundation in 2019.

• Continue to Cultivate our School Community Connections

This is a continuation of the work undertaken in 2018 and shall be an ongoing project. This project remains important for the Foundation in an endeavour to optimise its reach to the broadest possible school community.

• Investment Review

The Investment Committee, in conjunction with the Foundation’s Investment Manager, JB Were, has developed long-term strategies for all Foundation funds aligned with stated risk criteria and objectives. Whilst the Investment Committee continuously monitors investment performance, an in-depth review of investment options will be undertaken as a consequence of the changing national and international market environment which manifested itself at the end of 2018.
