A SECOND INSTALMENT OF INCREDIBLE FILMS FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE
With this second release of films in our 2018–19 season we expand our international selection still further. Striking, prize-winning new movies arrive from Lebanon, France, Italy, Colombia, and the UK … all before a final film that crisscrosses the globe. We’ve got more award-winners, more famous faces and not one but two documentaries for fans. Dramatic hits fresh from the international festival circuit arrive to UWA Somerville and ECU Joondalup Pines. Capharnaüm, Non-Fiction, Happy as Lazzaro, Birds of Passage and Dogman are some of the most talked-about fictional films of the year. Each film is distinctive, vibrant and as different from each other as can be. I know that Perth audiences also love an inspiring documentary – and two of the most heartening true tales I’ve seen all year (Maiden and Inventing Tomorrow) will leave our summer season on an optimistic high. Alongside these seven feature films, seven more Western Australian short films showcase the wonder of our
state – and the depth of filmmaking talent here. On 23 and 24 February you’re invited to a Writers Week retrospective dedicated to film adaptations of comic books, graphic novels and manga. Each screening will be introduced by a comic artist to provide some additional insight into these works that have been taken from the page to the big screen. This year for the first time we’re closing out the season by bringing back some of our most popular films for special encore sessions. From Monday 1 – Sunday 7 April, our final week is dedicated to reruns of some of your favourites at UWA Somerville and ECU Joondalup Pines. Meet up with friends, make some new ones and join us under the stars on a journey into the wonderful world of international cinema.
