Introduction The Mobile Museum of Art is honored to present this timely exhibition and publication featuring photographs of shared characteristics seen in sister cities, Mobile and Havana: their people, architecture and celebrations. Photographers Chip Cooper and Julio Larramendi (hailing from Alabama and Cuba respectively), have long worked together, seeking those resonating aspects of each city and surrounding environment— seeing through their camera lens what so easily escapes our own vision.

As historian John Sledge notes in his contextual essay, our cities formal sisterhood dates to the early 1990s, and has not always been a straightforward relationship over the years of political events and changing attitudes. But as these photographs reveal, despite political and economic changes, there are many enduring, shared qualities that bind together our people, cities, businesses and cultures. Art has a way of revealing the immutable and recognizably human beneath superficial differences of language or geography.

Noting the importance of this relationship to future business, tourism and cultural exchange between our cities, Mayor Sandy Stimpson notes: “We are proud that our city’s art museum has taken this intiative in presenting an exhibition that celebrates our longstanding relationship and the resulting benefits of cultural exchange and business enterprise. We hope that our sister city of Havana will also benefit from Mobile’s recent progress towards becoming the “safest, most family and business friendly city” by 2020.

As the sister cities of Mobile and Havana grow stronger and better—so will our people, our businesses and the quality of our collective lives.

Introduction El Museo de Arte de Mobile tiene el honor de presentar esta exposición y publicación de fotografías que muestran las características comunes que comparten las ciudades hermanas de Mobile y La Habana: su pueblo, su arquitectura y sus celebraciones. Los fotógrafos Chip Cooper y Julio Larramendi (oriundos de Alabama y Cuba, respectivamente) llevan mucho tiempo trabajando juntos en busca de aspectos vibrantes de cada una de estas ciudades y su entorno, y han logrado captar, a través del lente de la cámara, lo que tan fácilmente escapa a nuestra mirada.

Mobile and Havana: Sisters across the Gulf

By John S. Sledge On the morning of January 28, 1855, the Mobile socialite Octavia Walton LeVert steamed into Havana Harbor aboard the Black Warrior. The city on that bright, beautiful day was spread out, in her words, “picturesque” and “glittering” before her.

During this two-week visit preparatory to her second European tour, LeVert found Havana both familiar and exotic. The salt air, seafood, palm trees, oleanders, verandas, courtyards, blacks and mulattos, and Spanish tone that defined Cuba’s metropolis were for LeVert all recognizable aspects of Mobile, although Havana was older and much larger, of course, and so graced with far more of those features than Alabama’s port city. And then there were the elements Mobile did not have—bullfights, ceiba trees, the distinctive high-wheeled carriages called volantas, and surrounding fields of coffee, sugar cane, and tobacco. A vigorous maritime traffic between the Gulf cities, however, ensured that Cuban products like aromatic, hand-rolled cigars were easily obtainable in Mobile shops, while the Port City in return shipped cotton, lumber, and paper to Cuba, as well as skilled mechanics to maintain the American-made equipment in the sugar refineries.

While in Havana, LeVert was ensconced at the famous Hotel Cubano, a vibrant resort and watering hole where Southerners in general and Mobilians in particular were much in evidence. Sarah Brewer, the establishment’s excellent hostess, was a childhood friend, and LeVert’s rooms were arranged, she writes, “in accordance with American notions of comfort.” LeVert met several old acquaintances in the lobby and 2

also was called upon by a number of Spanish officials who had previously crossed their pantalooned legs in her Government Street parlor back home.

Mobilians like LeVert were well aware of the historical linkages between their seaport and Cuba. Havana, the “Key to the Indies,” was founded by the Spanish in 1515 and flourished as an important way station for gold-laden galleons returning from Mexico and the Caribbean. It was also a critical base for conquistadores like Hernando de Soto, who in 1540 led a fleet north, landed at Tampa Bay, and carved a destructive path through much of the American Southeast, including what would become modern Alabama. When the French established Mobile in 1702, they regularly used Havana as a friendly and sometimes not-so-friendly harbor. It was during one such stopover in 1706 that Mobile’s adventurous founder, Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville, caught a fever and died. Between 1780 and 1813, Mobile was part of Spanish West Florida, and Havana was critical to the administration and support of the colony. In LeVert’s time, American filibusters, or privately financed militaries, based along the northern Gulf Coast launched several Cuban invasions. Their intent was to liberate the island from Spain and make it a slave state. They failed, but many Southerners continued to entertain expansionist fantasies.

Given all of this shared history, it was little wonder that Mobilians found Havana to be anything but alien turf.

These close associations continued long after LeVert’s antebellum peregrinations.

During the American Civil War, Confederate blockade runners ran cotton out of Mobile and into Havana, selling it and making insane profits. On their return trips, they ferried military supplies for the Confederate

government in addition to coffee, sugar, tobacco, calico, bobbins, magazines, and sundry other items for goods-starved civilians in the South. Observing a strict neutrality, Havana sheltered the sleek commerce raider CSS Florida during the summer of 1862, prior to her daring run into Mobile Bay and subsequent raiding career. This infuriated U.S. officials.

In the midst of these stirring events, three Cuban students enrolled at Spring Hill College, a tiny Catholic institution in the western suburbs, overlooking downtown Mobile. As foreigners, the young men were exempt from Confederate military service and so had free time to play a new American game featuring a bat and a ball. The game was so addictive that they took it home with them. One of the boys, Nemesio Guillot, then founded the Habana Base Ball Club in 1868, igniting a passion for the sport that still burns bright in Cuba.

Besides borrowings like baseball, notable collaborations would engage the United States and Cuba. Among the most inspiring was the effort to eradicate yellow fever.

This devastating disease had regularly ravaged populations of the Gulf Coast and Caribbean Basin, and it promised to impede construction of the Panama Canal. During the late 1890s, Dr. William Crawford Gorgas of Mobile applied the knowledge gained from the earlier research of Dr. J. Carlos Finlay of Cuba and Dr. Walter Reed of the United States to block the spread of yellow fever. Finlay and Reed had documented the mosquito vector, and Gorgas accordingly rid Havana of stagnant water and mosquito breeding grounds to eliminate the scourge.

This pioneering work saved uncounted thousands of lives.

Unfortunately, these close ties grew strained during the second half of the twentieth century. Vexing political differences nearly ended communication and travel between the two countries. Frustrated by this decadeslong impasse, a visionary Mobile archivist named Jay Higginbotham decided to act.

He valued Mobile and Havana’s many ties and was convinced that it was better to build upon them than to ignore them. So, he went to Havana in 1993 and proposed a sister-city relationship. Cuban officials agreed, as did Mobile’s mayor and city council, and the bargain was sealed, creating the first-sister city designation between the two countries.

The move was not without controversy, but over time the relationship has borne positive results. Symbolizing the renewed connection, matching 1,500-pound bronze statues of d’Iberville nine feet tall were erected on each city’s waterfront. One looks south, the other north, in mutual acknowledgment of the longtime association. On an interpersonal scale, hundreds of exchanges have been sponsored, allowing architects, planners, doctors, students, writers, religious leaders, and artists to conduct a fruitful cross-cultural dialogue. Of more interest to hard-headed businessmen, $500 million worth of Alabama agricultural products were sold to Cuba through the Port of Mobile during the early 2000s. Fully loaded container ships glided south across a route once regularly plied by cotton packets, passenger steamers, and lumber schooners.

In this new century, official relations have unfortunately turned chilly again after some hopeful thawing. But if history is any guide, Mobilians and Habaneros will continue to strive for commonality, nurturing their familiar ties. Madame LeVert would feel at home.

Esta devastadora enfermedad había hecho estragos de manera habitual en las poblaciones de la Costa del Golfo y la Cuenca del Caribe, y amenazaba con impedir la construcción del Canal de Panamá. Como símbolo de la renovada relación, se erigieron estatuas de d’Iberville en el paseo marítimo de cada una de las dos ciudades.

Ambas esculturas en bronce miden tres metros de altura y pesan 680 kilogramos.

Una de ellas mira en dirección al sur y la otra al norte en reconocimiento mutuo de la larga relación. Desde entonces, se han patrocinado cientos de intercambios, lo que ha permitido a arquitectos, proyectistas, médicos, estudiantes, escritores, dirigentes religiosos y artistas establecer un fructífero diálogo intercultural. En cuanto a las relaciones comerciales, a principios de la década de los años 2000, Alabama vendió a Cuba productos agrícolas por valor de 500 millones de dólares. Two Photographers

By Elizabeth Elkins Two photographers look out at the ocean before them. It is a dim, cloudy day, and the murky waves crash against the shore. The water is more gray than blue, more alarming than inviting. Salty foam is flung onto the city’s wall, the only thing that stands between the people of Havana and the sure destruction of the biting sea.

The bright colors typical of Cuba, pastel yellows and pinks and blues, are there in the background, but they have been overtaken by darkness. The city has been assaulted by northern winds strong enough to blow trees to the ground as if they were paper. It has been ravaged by pounding water threatening to shatter its walls as if they were sheets of glass.

And yet Havana still stands. The people still thrive.

The image that the photographers capture here is not of the lively, colorful Cuba that many picture, but of the Cuba that outsiders don’t often see: the resilient Cuba.

The vividly animated Cuba exists, too, and Chip Cooper and Julio Larramendi knew that they had to capture it all.

On a brighter day, they stood on the side of the road, taking in the landscape. It was a

sudden stop, but sometimes the way the light reflects off a windowsill or a smile on the wrinkled face of a man gazing at his grandson catches one of the photographer’s eyes, and they stop, then both leap out of the car to get the shot.

The vibrancy of the street, the brightly colored buildings, and the spirited people in this photograph are part of what they love about their work. They look for the beauty in everything: drops of dew glimmering in the morning sun, the fresh emerald green of a hill, memories etched in the faces of local people. It is always a challenge to capture the perfect shot, but Cooper and Larramendi also know that when one of them fails, the other will succeed. It is a trust that they have developed over nearly nine years of working together.

It is fitting that these two particular photographers set out to capture the similarities between the sister cities of Mobile, Alabama, and Havana, Cuba. Though Cooper was born in the United States and Larramendi in Cuba, they are more family than colleagues, more brothers than friends.

The two share a connection that is palpable; you can see it in the smallest things, from the way they share a silent smile to the touch of hand to shoulder. The two don’t even need words.

They’ve known they would be close since the moment they met, nearly a decade ago, in Cuba. They were both working on photography projects at the time and were introduced through a mutual friend. Without speaking, they knew that they needed each other’s presence in their lives and in their work.

Years and thousands of photographs later, they sit on a couch together in Cooper’s office at The University of Alabama’s Honors College. Cooper smiles as Larramendi brushes his hand. It is hard to imagine one without the other. Whether out taking pictures for a book, teaching in their photography classes, or just getting lunch, the two are inseparable. They feed each other’s creativity and balance each other out.

Cooper is the laid-back artist of the duo, while Larramendi is the intense, calculating scientist. Cooper is less grounded, more likely to let his art carry him away, but Larramendi is always there to bring him back to earth. It is part of what makes their relationship, and their photography, so strong.

They’ve spent years photographing Cuba together, and though Larramendi was born on the island, they’ve both learned a good deal through the process and from each other.

Each day Larramendi makes new discoveries about himself and his home country. That is 5

Dos fotógrafos Por Elizabeth Elkins part of what excites him about this work: the ability to grow and change and see the world differently through his camera lens. He has a warmth and a gentleness that opens the doors and the hearts of his subjects.

And though Cooper was not born in Cuba, his work is just as personal and full of discoveries because of his experience photographing the Black Belt region of Alabama, notable for its dark soil. It is a similarly heartfelt experience for him to photograph the people of Cuba. He speaks no Spanish, but that has never been an obstacle in his work. No one has ever refused to let him take a photograph, reassured by the honesty in his face. He connects with the Cuban people on a deep level that helps him to capture their truths in his work.

For this book, they’ve taken on the challenge of capturing the similarities between two sister cities with a long shared history. They’ve captured both Larramendi’s home of Havana and Cooper’s home of Mobile. Just as the photographers have more similarities than differences, so do the cities.

Sin embargo, La Habana sigue en pie. El habanero sigue haciéndose más fuerte.

The best photographs capture emotion. They combine the mind, the eye, and the heart of the photographer. In this book, you’ll find incredible work like this. You’ll see two cities that may be separated by distance, but are close in spirit and in heart.

Desde el momento en que se conocieron, hace casi una década en Cuba, supieron que existía afinidad entre ellos. En aquel momento en que fueron presentados por un amigo en común, cada uno de ellos se encontraba trabajando en un proyecto fotográfico propio.

Sin decir palabra, supieron al instante que necesitarían uno del otro en sus vidas y en su trabajo.

Después de muchos años y miles de fotografías tomadas juntos, se encuentran ahora sentados en el sofá de la oficina de Cooper en el Honors College de la Universidad de Alabama. Cooper sonríe mientras Larramendi le roza la mano. Es difícil imaginar el uno sin el otro. Ya sea tomando fotos para un libro, dando clases en su curso de fotografía, o simplemente almorzando, los dos son inseparables.

Cada uno se nutre de la creatividad del otro y hallan un equilibro entre sí. De los dos, Cooper es el artista relajado, mientras que Larramendi es el científico intenso y previsor. Cooper es más abstraído y es muy probable que se deje llevar por su arte, pero ahí está siempre Larramendi para traerlo de vuelta a la tierra, y esta es una de las cosas

que hacen que su relación personal y su fotografía sean tan poderosas.

Han estado años fotografiando a Cuba juntos, y aunque Larramendi nació en la Isla, ambos han aprendido muchísimo de este proceso y uno del otro. Todos los días, Larramendi descubre algo nuevo sobre sí mismo y sobre su patria. Eso es parte de lo que le entusiasma intensamente de este trabajo: la capacidad de crecer, de cambiar, y de ver al mundo de manera diferente a través de su lente. La amabilidad y la gentileza que él posee abre las puertas y los corazones de las personas que él retrata.

Han captado tanto La Habana de Larramendi como el Mobile de Cooper. Ambas ciudades, igual que estos dos fotógrafos, poseen más similitudes que diferencias.

Las mejores fotografías son aquellas capaces de captar sentimientos, emociones, las que combinan la mente, la visión y el corazón del fotógrafo, y en este libro, encontraremos increíbles obras como esas. Veremos dos ciudades que podrán estar separadas por la distancia, pero que están cercanas en espíritu y corazón.

En el caso de Cooper, que no nació en Cuba, su trabajo es igual de personal y está lleno de descubrimientos gracias a su experiencia fotografiando la franja de tierra llamada Black Belt (Cinturón Negro), en Alabama, notable por su suelo fértil y oscuro. Para él, fotografiar a los cubanos es una experiencia que también le brota del corazón. No habla español, pero eso nunca ha sido un obstáculo en su trabajo.

Gracias a la sinceridad de su rostro, nunca nadie se ha negado a que él le tome una fotografía. Es capaz de relacionarse con los cubanos a un nivel profundo y esto lo ayuda a captar sus realidades en su obra.

Two fishermen, over 600 miles apart from each other, are making their way in their small boats across the calm waters of their respective bays. Looking out towards the shore, they both notice a bronze statue of an unknown figure. They are unaware that the two statues, one in each port, are identical and that they are facing each other across the sea.

Dos pescadores, a 1000 km de distancia entre sí, van desplazando sus pequeños botes en las tranquilas aguas de sus respectivas bahías.

A su paso, cada uno observa la figura en bronce de un personaje desconocido, sin saber que son dos estatuas idénticas, una en cada puerto, que se miran a través del océano.

History has linked Havana with Mobile for centuries: Hernando de Soto sailed from the town of San Cristóbal de La Habana and headed north to explore new lands; Pierre Le Moyne D’Iberville founded Mobile and died in Havana, which is why both cities honor him with sculptures by the sea; the discovery of the yellow fever vector by Cuban Dr. Carlos J. Finlay and the subsequent studies carried out by Dr. Walter Reed allowed Dr. William C. Gorgas, of Mobile, Alabama, to rid Havana of the dreaded disease; trade between the two port cities has continued for over 300 years, and, more recently, 25 years ago, their twinning took place, the first one between Cuba and the United States.

La Historia enlaza a La Habana y a Mobile desde hace siglos: Hernando de Soto, al frente de una expedición, zarpó de la entonces villa de San Cristóbal para explorar las tierras del Norte; Pierre Le Moyne D’Iberville fundó Mobile y murió en La Habana, de ahí que ambas ciudades lo honren con sendas esculturas a la vera del mar; el descubrimiento del médico cubano Carlos J. Finlay del agente transmisor de la fiebre amarilla y los estudios posteriores realizados por el Dr. Walter Reed, permitieron al Dr. William C. Gorgas, de Mobile, Alabama, eliminar la epidemia de tan grave enfermedad que azotaba La Habana; por más de 300 años se ha mantenido el comercio entre las dos ciudades-puertos, y, más recientemente, hace solo 25 años, se produjo su hermanamiento, el primero entre Cuba y Estados Unidos.

The maritime bridge created a flow of culture and influences that are visible in architecture, foods, traditions and an inexplicable but real feeling of being “people from the South.” This exhibition shows several of these common themes and each of us offers his own view of shared elements, of the ever-present sea, and, above all, of the people of Havana and Mobile, who, like our two fishermen, perhaps ignore how much connects us across the waters.

El puente marítimo creó un flujo de cultura e influencias que hoy se deja ver en la arquitectura, las comidas, algunas tradiciones y un sentir inexplicable, pero real, de ser “gente del Sur”. En la presente exposición, que intenta mostrar varios de esos temas comunes, cada uno de nosotros ofrece su visión de detalles compartidos, del mar omnipresente y, sobre todo, de quienes habitan La Habana y Mobile, tal vez ignorando, como nuestros dos pescadores, cuánto nos une a través de las aguas.

CHIP COOPER Chip Cooper began his career in photography after earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama in 1972. He was awarded an artist fellowship by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and went on to serve as the director of photography at the University of Alabama for thirty-three years. He is currently an artist-in-residence at the Fototeca de Cuba for the City of Havana and an artist-in-residence at the University of Alabama’s Honors College.

Chip Cooper comenzó su carrera de fotógrafo después de graduarse en la Universidad de Alabama en 1972. Luego de recibir una beca artística del Consejo de las Artes del Estado de Alabama, se desempeñó como director de fotografía de la Universidad de Alabama durante treinta y tres años. Es actualmente artista residente de la Fototeca de Cuba de La Habana y artista residente del Honors College de la Universidad de Alabama.

Cooper’s photography has been recognized nationally and internationally. His work has been exhibited in many museums and is included in private and corporate collections. He has been featured in a number of national publications, such as The New York Times, Newsweek, The Village Voice, and USA Today. His most well-known photography books include Common Threads: Photographs and Stories from the South (C K M Pr, 2000), Tin Man: Charlie Lucas (University of Alabama Press, 2009), Old Havana: Spirit of the Living City/La Habana Vieja: El espíritu de la ciudad viva (University of Alabama Press, 2012), and Campesinos: Inside the Soul of Cuba (University of Alabama Press, 2017).

La obra de Cooper ha sido reconocida nacional e internacionalmente, habiéndose exhibido en numerosos museos, además de formar parte de colecciones privadas y corporativas. Cooper ha figurado en diversas publicaciones nacionales, como The New York Times, Newsweek, The Village Voice, y USA Today. JULIO LARRAMENDI Julio Larramendi began working with photography in 1969, held his first exhibition in 1985, and has devoted himself entirely to photography since 1997. He is a research associate for the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de Cuba, a professor and visiting artist in residence at the University of Alabama’s Honors College, and the editorial director of Ediciones Polymita.

Julio Larramendi comenzó en la fotografía en 1969. Presentó su primera exposición en 1985 y desde 1997 se ha dedicado por entero a la fotografía. Es Investigador Asociado del Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de Cuba, profesor y artista residente en el Honors College de la Universidad de Alabama, y director editorial de Ediciones Polymita.

Larramendi has worked as a photographer and executive director for various publications and numerous commercial productions.

His photographs have appeared in national and international publications, and his work has been featured in more than sixty books. He was founder and first president of the Department of Latin American Photography at the José Martí International Institute of Journalism.

Larramendi ha trabajado como fotógrafo y director ejecutivo de diversas publicaciones y numerosas producciones comerciales. Sus fotografías han aparecido en revistas nacionales e internacionales, así como en más de sesenta libros. Fue fundador y primer presidente de la Cátedra de Fotografía Latinoamericana del Instituto Internacional de Periodismo José Martí.

Often invited to speak on photographic topics in Cuba and abroad, Larramendi is an organizer and jury member for international photography and advertising events. He has had more than a hundred solo exhibitions and has participated in sixty group exhibitions across thirty countries and in various Cuban cities. He is the recipient of more than a dozen international awards, including the 2016 National “Espacio” Award for lifetime achievement.

Larramendi es conferencista e instructor frecuente sobre temas fotográficos tanto en Cuba como en el extranjero. Ha participado como organizador y jurado en eventos y concursos internacionales de fotografía y publicidad. Ha presentado más de un centenar de exposiciones individuales y participado en sesenta exposiciones colectivas en treinta países y varias ciudades de Cuba. Ha sido distinguido con más de una decena de premios internacionales, así como el Premio Nacional “Espacio” 2016 por la obra de toda la vida.
