A unique luxury experience

– a hotel that excels in every category…

Welcome

to an unforgettable experience... Hotel Royal, located at Store Torv in the heart of Århus City, welcomes you in its own special atmosphere, being inspired by Renaissance Vienna, Italy and China. The hotel is an ideal setting for an unforgettable experience including a top level service standard set by our friendly and helpful staff. Meticulous restoration with attention to every detail After recent restoration, Hotel Royal now offers luxury that excels in every category. Steeped in tradition the hotel has been elegantly preserved with both careful restoration of the precious, old interior and total renovation of all rooms. In 2006, the original 102 rooms were converted into 69 luxurious rooms of up to 75 m2, fitted with wireless Internet and flat screen TV. Inspired by Vienna, Italy and China The interior decoration focuses on preserving Hotel Royal’s own special atmosphere. The selection of colours, materials and furniture is partly inspired by a castle in Vienna, partly by sources in Italy, and China. The style of the selection of furniture, carpets and colours runs like a red thread throughout the hotel – including artwork, tasteful room design and beautiful large luxury bathrooms. An architectural and historical gem Everything has been meticulously restored with respect for the distinctive and esteemed reputation that Hotel Royal has enjoyed for decades. For many years, the considerable number of regular guests, including business people, private individuals and artists, has regarded Hotel Royal as both an architectural and a historical gem. Personalities such as Louis Armstrong, Yoko Ono, Sir Cliff Richard, Madonna, David Beckham and numerous others, have stayed here.

If

these walls could speak ...

170 years of hotel history appeal to imagination. One might wonder what has happened inside the thick walls of the fine old hotel during the course of time. The spirit of celebrities from the past lives on here, spiced with amusing, offbeat and impressive anecdotes.

Centuries-old walls Hotel Royal is a place where history goes hand in hand with innovation and development. Everything is interconnected, and wherever careful restoration has taken place, provision has also been made for the memories that more than anything else make up the hotel’s identity. Thus, parts of the building can be traced as far back as the 13th century, when it housed the first Town Hall in Århus. Foundation stone of the first Hotel Royal The name of the hotel first appears in 1838. Contemporary drawings of a fine, whitewashed building opposite the Cathedral in Store Torv clearly show a façade with the Hotel Royal sign. This was in fact the first Hotel Royal in Århus, designed by the publican Niels Larsen. The building was originally called “The King’s Manor” and was erected in 1798 on the remains of the old Town Hall. It was subsequently combined with the neighbouring manor in Rosensgade. »But the food was good« For several centuries, the Store Torv address has been the meeting place of both local middle class and international prominent personalities of the time. Hans Christian Andersen stayed here, as did his contemporary, the writer and actress Johanne Louise Heiberg, who once complained in writing of the din and racket coming from the dung heap in the courtyard. »But the food was excellent«, she noted on leaving. The dung heap has long since been gone. The food, however, is still exquisite. Laurel and Hardy in the oldest lift in the city The hotel façade dates back to the major rebuilding project in 1902, when architects Eggert, Achen and Thorkel Møller added new charm to the building. This included installing the first lift in the city, the exclusive Triton, which – more than a century later – still conveys our guests from the foyer to their respective floors. And it is at least as reliable as it was the day Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were photographed in front of the fine lifting equipment during a visit to Århus.

Artistic melting pot......

Right from the beginning in 1838, the artistic touch of Hotel Royal has been one of its distinguishing features. This is a tradition we zealously uphold. Over the course of time, several fresh initiatives have brought this mosaic of cultural styles up-to-date with the new millennium.

Wennerwald, Jorn, Madsen Over the years, we have collected a wide selection of paintings, lithographs and artistic renderings on the walls throughout the hotel. These are in warm colours, and great respect has gone into the mixing of different genres and periods. These range from the early genre painters such as Wennerwald, Høyrup and Friis Hansen to Jørgen Nash and Asger Jorn, and pictures by the multi-artists Johnny Madsen and Peter Viskinde. More than 300 original works of art Every room at Hotel Royal is decorated with diverse, original art. In connection with the change of ownership in 1983, a number of the old hotel treasures were sold by auction, but the art collection has grown steadily ever since then and now counts more than 300 original works. Starting afresh this way has made room for artistic diversity – both in the rooms themselves and in the common areas.

A pictorial voyage through the local history of Århus Amongst the most up-front works, Andrzej Kowalczyk – the Polish painter – has created the large pictorial narratives. His paintings portray highlights of local history in Århus. These range from the inauguration of the cathedral and founding of the Cathedral School in 1520 to a large panorama painting of the city dated 2005. The complete list of monarchs Andrzej Kowalczyk has also enriched Hotel Royal with his pictures of the complete list of Danish monarchs. The collection consists of 76 monarchs in addition to approximately 30 legendary kings from around the 4th century, and the list begins with King Dan and concludes with Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II. The paintings are hung in the hotel corridors and other common areas.

Restaurant culinary experiences under the stars...

Queen’s Garden is the attractive restaurant of Hotel Royal set in an octagonal glass winter garden. The large tree in the centre of the room and the plants in the glass ceiling provide a vivid, light setting. In this relaxed atmosphere, you may enjoy a drink while gazing at the open sky, or let yourself be inspired by the menu. Queens Garden provides you with an abundance of culinary experiences created from selected ingredients, preferably Danish, with a focus on quality.

Conferences meeting in attractive surroundings

The Queen’s Garden restaurant is well suited to host meetings, but Hotel Royal also offers very attractive, charming meeting facilities that will accommodate up to 40 people. Our meeting rooms are elegantly decorated with ceiling paintings and stucco, as well as very comfortable furniture. In addition, all of our meeting rooms are fitted with modern AV equipment.
