Dear Reader, I’d like to use this opportunity to introduce myself as the Sales Director for PERI UK, having been appointed earlier this year.

I first joined PERI in 1994 – since then, I’ve seen the business make great changes and evolve during my time across different departments, subsidiaries, and most recently in my role as a Regional Sales Manager.

I’m thrilled to lead a great sales team who support your projects on a day-to-day basis. With a strong background in engineering, I have an appreciation for the technical challenges our customers face on site, and I look forward to working with my team to help you overcome these by engaging early in the construction process.

My priority is to ensure we continue to deliver your requirements efficiently by providing the best products and services possible.

Stronger together As 2021 draws to a close, I want to thank you for your continued support throughout another incredibly challenging year.

Alongside the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the country and construction industry have been negatively impacted by several major factors such as, the implementation of Brexit, global raw materials shortages and related volatile price increases, not to mention the shortage of workers in key sectors, such as HGV drivers, that have affected us more recently.

Despite these unprecedented events, we have also seen many positives throughout the year and have come a long way since March 2020 when the virus brought the country and economy to a standstill.

As the COVID-19 vaccination programme has been rolled out, we have returned to our offices and jobsites, we have been able to go out to restaurants and bars, travel abroad and many other activities that the pandemic had prevented us from doing.

The construction industry has also shown its resilience, with large and impressive projects being delivered across all sectors. Many of the projects shown over the following pages have been impacted by at least one of the external factors mentioned earlier, yet each one has been completed successfully by working closely with our customers.

Investing in quality Working with the right products has also been crucial in combatting the direct impact of these factors on project sites. Systems like our lightweight DUO formwork and PERI UP Easy scaffolding system help alleviate time and labour challenges by enabling fast and simple assembly, which can be achieved by just one operative.

Our digital technology range has also expanded this year to include the PERI InSite Pressure Sensor. So far, it’s proved how revolutionary technology can save both time and improve quality out in the field on a concrete repair project as well as on one of the UK’s largest construction sites – Hinkley Point C. As a business, we’ve continued to invest in long-term solutions for the company and our customers. One of these investments being our new training facility and exhibition hall in Brentwood. This multi-use space has already been used to deliver our approved training courses, as well as host customer visits. You can find out how to book a visit on page 6.

A positive outlook Looking forward to 2022, there is a great deal to be optimistic about. While some sectors forecast a stable period ahead, other sectors like infrastructure predict strong demand and growth over the next few years.

As we approach the festive period, I’m sure many of you like myself are looking forward to some quality time with your family and friends and a chance to recharge our batteries.

I’m excited to bring my 12 years of experience in the industry to PERI UK. I’ve had a varied journey in construction so far, working as a sub-contractor for a supply and erect formwork company, and as a construction manager and project manager for main contractors in the Middle East.

I’ve also worked as an assistant project manager for a consultancy firm representing the client-side, which gives me an appreciation for the problems our customers encounter, not only with temporary works, but throughout the entire construction process.

Spending the early part of my career in PERI South Africa and now PERI UK means I’m well versed in PERI systems, how they compare to similar products, and what works for different markets.

This is a great opportunity for me to package my broad knowledge and expertise in temporary works systems into one role that is going to provide the one-to-one support that our customers require when they are seeking the right solution for their project.

Over 140 tonnes of PERI UP scaffolding enable major bridge repair scheme Clifton Bridge, Nottingham

For any complex structure, innovative temporary works solutions help to reduce imposed loads on permanent structures helping to bring various elements of the project together.

The A52 Clifton Bridge, ‘a major National Highways upgrade project’ in Nottingham, is one of these complex structures, which is undergoing repair works inside and underneath the bridge to strengthen the concrete with the installation of new steel cables.

Spans 4 and 5 are critical structural sections of the bridge as they sit directly above the River Trent, making access to this section more technical than most.

By working closely together, and understanding the project’s requirements very early on, we proposed a full integrated scaffolding and formwork solution to main contractor VSL Systems UK. The design was subject to stringent checks by National Highways and VSL prior to the build. This involved detailed planning and demonstrating how the suspended access would be installed to the underside of this section of the bridge, which spans over 100m.

We also worked alongside specialist contractor Newco Scaffolding to ensure continuity throughout the installation of various applications, encompassing on-site demonstrations and product system support prior to and during the build.

Over 140 tonnes of PERI UP scaffolding has been used on the project to support a range of access requirements, keeping the temporary load of the solution to a minimum throughout each phase.

“We wanted to provide a clear walkway to allow repair works to be carried out seamlessly with minimal interruptions to the interface and existing structure. We have been able to achieve this through detailed 3D planning of the vision we had proposed to VSL in the early stages of this project in conjunction with our in-house design team. This has proved beneficial for the site team and our designers as we were able to carry out a clash detection exercise with our formwork and scaffolding to deliver a secure and obstruction-free working area suspended above the ground.

We are looking forward to continuing our working relationship with VSL and other customers in similar challenging infrastructure environments,” Charles Stratford.

This has involved incorporating our lightweight PERI UP 75 Flex Stairs where possible for greater flexibility, with its range of stair lifts accommodating changes in working height throughout the build. Other systems included birdcage scaffolds with high load capacity to store large amounts of material on opposite sides of the river leading up to the suspended scaffolding and walkway to the underside of the bridge.

Access to material was enhanced by integrating the 40kN-capacity PERI UP loading bays on site, as they provided ideal storage space at the required

levels and could be accessed via the main working platforms.

One of the key benefits of our involvement was the supply of essential formwork products in the early stages of the project and how it integrated with our PERI UP Flex system to prevent clashes throughout the build.

3D planning and the benefits of system integration enabled the lightweight DUO formwork, GT beam formwork and VARIOKIT to work around the scaffolding structures with ease, resulting in a unified temporary works solution.

DUO From the customer’s perspective We interviewed Tarek Bazzouni, Project Manager at JB Structures, to learn more about his experience with our lightweight formwork system, DUO, on a challenging refurbishment project.

Can you tell us about the project and what you are constructing with DUO?

How did the system benefit your project?

We’ve been using DUO for a refurbishment project. We’ve got about 16,000m2 of walls and this is mainly what we are using it for at the moment. It’s a textbook definition of how the system can be utilised.

In terms of time-saving […], with no crane the system has been quick.

Because we could handle this weight by hand and light mechanical tools. If you had a crane then maybe not so much, but without a crane it’s much quicker and much safer.

What has been the challenge on this project?

This project is unusual as we have been working inside an existing frame, so we can’t use cranes like we would normally do. Due to this, we had to find a system that was light and could be managed by manual handling and using light mechanical tools. This is how we stumbled upon DUO. Why did you choose to work with DUO? The weight of the system was actually a very significant aspect in terms of our decision – the heaviest panel is under 30kg, which is drastically lighter and safer for our men. When we cost or think of jobs, the wellbeing of our men should always be one of our first priorities and this system has really been ingenious in terms of achieving that.

Usually, you would need to train your chippies a little bit longer before using [other] systems, so this [DUO] gave us a little bit of flexibility in that we were able to train our men a little bit quicker, so obviously that has increased efficiency.

Did you have any reservations before using the system?

Our reservations were mostly about the quality of the finish, this [DUO] being a polymer liner. We were not sure if the finish was going to be smooth and matte, but it was. We were a little bit worried in terms of quality because the quality is paramount on this job in terms of joints and bellying, but so far, it’s given us pretty much everything we’ve expected. To be honest, aesthetics, even though it’s a trivial aspect, has been pretty good. We have had a lot of visitors here and this [DUO] just creates a user-friendly environment.

What we like most, and I know it sounds a bit repetitive, but the safety of our men. This really makes us feel comfortable knowing that we are not straining our men.

One critical item was the application of the release agent, but once we managed that process it actually gave us what we were looking for, so that reservation was not valid. It’s been a positive experience so far.

How did your team find working with the system?

In terms of configuration, it’s quite easy to use. The lines were controlled, and the finish was good. Combining all the parameters together it is a useful system.

W ould you recommend DUO and why?

I would definitely recommend the system, especially if you’ve got jobs in basements, restricted areas, no crane areas like we are experiencing over here. It’s user-friendly – if you care about the safety of your men it’s definitely something to consider.

And it actually achieved the finish that we required, so all in all, it was a positive system.

How did you find the support from the PERI team?

The support from PERI was actually very good. Neil [Senior Sales Engineer] has done very well. Our queries were being answered quick. Chris Pittock [Technical Team Leader - Rugby] was one of the head of engineers over here and he was very pragmatic, when working with us. PERI delivered in a timely manner, it was a very good positive experience and one that we will keep going with.

FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN SAVE WITH DUO

Any final comments?

To be honest, from personal experience when we were not very sure about it [DUO] and having introduced it to our men who we value because they actually do most of the [labour] work – they were very reluctant, they did not enjoy the system to start with – they thought it was flimsy.

But we saw the benefits before we even used it, so we said look – bear with us – let’s make it happen, this [DUO] is actually really good. And now, they are very used it that they do not want to go back to the older heavier systems funnily enough.

Change is sometimes difficult but if you want to get ahead of the curve it’s always worth exploring new solutions before others, and you know you might reap the benefits. ■

Behind the scenes in PERI‘s Fabrication Workshop with Workshop Manager - Steve Wightman

Set up by one PERI employee in 1998, our fabrication workshop has evolved to become an integral part of our formwork business. Over the years, Workshop Manager Steve Wightman has built up the function’s expertise and knowledge to deliver the unique and fast-paced requirements of construction projects today, which once involved over 20 carpenters operating in the workshop to meet demand.

Benefits of fabrication

Customers choose PERI for fabrication because we can build almost any requirement. If there’s a detailed drawing behind it from our technical team, it’s possible.

When we first decided to provide a fabrication service 23 years ago, it was down to me to set the workshop up ready to serve customers who were becoming accustomed to the PERI brand. As the business started to grow, it was important to build a team with the right skills and expertise to meet the demand for bespoke formwork and climbing systems across the UK.

The projects we have worked on are proof of what we are capable of.

We’ve fabricated formwork shutters and systems for some of the most iconic projects in the UK, from the London Aquatics Centre to the V&A Museum in Scotland, where we were challenged to produce 1000m2 of bespoke shutters per month. With each project, we’ve learnt something new and improved our craft, ready for the next challenge.

Today, we have a team of seven skilled carpenters that check designs, assess buildability, fabricate, and ensure deliveries are loaded safely. With the expertise across the team, we can help reduce the pressure on site labour and the requirement for these specialist skills because it can all be achieved successfully in-house.

Fabricating off-site at our depot means that we can offer our customers a distinct advantage on their projects.

We can provide ready-to-use systems that can be erected as soon as it’s delivered to site. This means kit can be delivered in line with the customer’s desired construction sequence which saves space and time.

A lot of the fabrication projects we work on are based in and around central London where land is limited and at a premium, so the just-in-time delivery service that we’re able to offer plays a big part in reducing equipment hire periods and the cost of renting additional space.

One of the biggest advantages is that our production process isn’t affected by external factors like bad weather and the availability of the crane. As there’s no downtime, we can get the job done to meet the programme on time without increases in cost and uncertainty.

Ensuring customer success Every job is different, and we embrace the challenge.

We’ve produced 11m-high shutters that needed to be turned over inside our workshop, which wasn’t an easy task .

These sorts of challenges require us to adapt our approach to each project and always consider the end process. How will it be transported depending on site conditions? Will the customer be able to offload safely? It’s important to have the answers to these questions and mitigate risks before we build.

We’re able to get it right first time by working closely with our technical teams to review blueprints thoroughly and assessing how the 2D drawing translates in the real world.

Versatility Fabrication is a process that has to be perfect. That’s why we work with specialist companies to produce unique 3D components for all kinds of freeform formwork requirements. Individual elements are sent for CNC cutting and brought back to our Rugby depot ready for assembly. Outsourcing where we need to increases productivity and time, without compromising on quality.

Knowing there’s an expert from start to finish across our business means we can also work alongside our logistics team to plan the best way to deliver fabricated equipment to our customer.

From systems to skills to solutions – versatility is the key to our and our customers’ success.

Many of the systems we work with, like our VARIO system, are made up of off-the-shelf components from our VARIOKIT range, so we have the flexibility to build almost any design. ■

55 metres deep inside the Blackfriars shaft Thames Tideway, London

Tideway’s plans to clean up the River Thames and increase London’s sewer capacity have led to PERI systems and services being used on many of its sites along the 25km main tunnel – or super sewer as it is known. This includes the 55m deep Blackfriars combined sewer overflow shaft, which will store and transfer sewage flows to the main tunnel.

The shaft at Blackfriars introduced a new set of challenges for our team compared to other shafts on the project. This is because the Blackfriars shaft intersects the main tunnel, so all structures were on the critical path for the overall project.

Aside from the two vortex tubes that will control the flow of sewage down the shaft, a large aspect of the construction work in the shaft is the 1m thick secondary lining which will encase the waterproof membrane and strengthen the structure.

Jumpform technology, in the form of our hybrid rail-guided climbing and single-sided climbing system has been used to help the formwork accommodate the changing shape of the shaft, which was formed by a combination of piling and jet grouting, and included tunnel connection structures.

For the proposed construction sequence, the customer required a concrete pressure of 40kN/m2. To achieve this, our engineers created special angled wall shoes that were compatible with the shaft’s circular geometry and capable of withstanding tension loads of more than 200kN.

The first structures engineers had to accommodate during the secondary lining works were two 7.3m diameter drums situated opposite each other at the bottom of the shaft. The drums are temporary structures that will form openings from the shaft to the main tunnel once the foamed concrete currently sealing them has been broken down.

The structure of each drum was formed using eight prefabricated shutters and VARIOKIT components which enabled the whole system to retract from the concrete for easy striking.

Due to the limited space inside the shaft, all shutters were prefabricated at our depot in Rugby and delivered to site ready to be joined together, minimising equipment and labour required.

Installing the drums was a challenge as it required the structures, weighing 7.5t each, to be manoeuvred from a horizontal position on the ground

to a vertical one ready to be erected within the shaft.

Each drum was slung and lifted by crane before being tilted to one side where one set of crane hooks was repositioned on the other side to support its vertical descent into the shaft.

It was important to keep the drums securely in position during the initial secondary lining pours. Engineers accounted for the self-weight of the drums by designing a cantilevered moving frame which comprised an 8t counterweight to overcome the uplift pressure of the concrete being pumped in. Six ties were installed from the bottom of the temporary structure through to the base slab to also counteract the uplift.

Despite the challenges, collaborative working and creative engineering have proved successful in the delivery of the secondary lining work so far.

Completing the work without modifying or removing the formwork from the wall during the process was made more challenging by the changing profile of the shaft. To further minimise operations on site, engineers ensured that special filler plates remained attached to the shutters throughout the climb.

Industrial Manager for PERI UP, Mark Holmes, commented: “It’s been great working with Legion Scaffolding to overcome the complex access requirements on Blake Tower.

Due to the speed of PERI UP Easy and the benefits of the combined PERI UP Flex solution, we were pleased to be able to shave days off the total erection and dismantling time, increase efficiency and help minimise the disruption to residents.”

Daniel Boyle, Director of Legion Scaffolding, commented: “As someone who has worked in a traditional scaffolding company, I have never ventured into system scaffolding before, but the PERI UP products have changed my mind. The systems’ speed and enhanced safety features are the main reasons why we chose to work with PERI. The design of the combined solution was well thought out, and the 3D modelling produced by PERI allowed us to demonstrate sequencing and the time and labour savings that could be achieved for our client – the latter being the biggest bonus on this project.”

Blake Tower, part of the Grade II listed Barbican development, is the first PERI project in the UK to feature our lightweight scaffolding system – PERI UP Easy. It’s also the first time we have collaborated with London-based scaffolding contractor Legion Scaffolding.

Features such as the advanced guardrail, and the fact that it’s made of off-the-shelf components, made our PERI UP Easy system ideal for this requirement. With fewer couplers and special tools required, scaffolders experienced a simpler and faster build process compared to tube and fit.

Technical expertise from our scaffolding team was crucial in accommodating the challenging access requirements in this central London location. With residents occupying the building as the construction work took place, additional pressure was placed on keeping build and dismantling times to an absolute minimum.

The PERI UP Easy tower took scaffolders two days to build, making it more than four times faster than the predicted build time (10 days) for a tube and fit equivalent. In addition to halving build times, PERI UP Easy’s low weight and minimal components also reduced transport requirements.

One of the main requirements was external ladder access over 26 floors and above 50 metres in height. This was in addition to hanger access to the balcony, which would enable window installation across the tower’s luxury penthouse apartments.

What made this scaffolding solution more beneficial is the integration of the simple PERI UP Easy tower with versatile PERI UP Flex components.

The latter was used for the complex access requirements on the balcony itself, consisting of a scaffolding hanger on either side to facilitate window installation.

Using system scaffolding for the hangers mitigated bracing and beam requirements. Without the need for bracing across the working platform, scaffolders had unobstructed access to carry the windows to the point of installation.

Additionally, constructing without beams further simplified the build, resulting in fewer components and around a 50% reduction in labour time.

System support for complex access requirements like this was crucial during the initial stages of the build – our site demonstrators were appointed to ensure assembly was carried out safely and efficiently as per the design. ■

Building rethought 3D concrete printing is revolutionising the construction industry

What is 3D concrete printing?

3D printing is a manufacturing process in which material is applied layer by layer to create three-dimensional objects.

Nowadays, 3D printing is widely used mainly in industry, medical and dental technology as well as in research, for example to produce models, prototypes, tools or components with special geometries.

Around 25 years ago, the first attempts were made to also build houses with a 3D printer. The technology shapes concrete without the use of formwork – quickly, cost-effectively and with great design freedom. The process is ideally suited for use in residential construction and to produce individual prefabricated parts.

In 2020, PERI Group developed the company’s 3D printing technology into

a fully comprehensive construction process and has already printed its first concrete apartment building and house.

These 3D-printed structures are the first to be regularly rented and occupied and are not just for demonstration purposes.

Why 3D concrete printing?

With PERI Group’s developments in 3D concrete printing technology, some PERI subsidiaries will be able to enter the housing market with a sustainable alternative to materials like bricks and wood that are typically used in house building.

The world is in a state of change. Every day we are confronted with global developments such as labour and housing shortages. This is also having an impact on the construction industry – labour is becoming scarce, there are fewer and fewer applicants to choose from and the demands of construction site personnel are changing. At the same time, digitalisation poses new challenges for the construction industry.

Reduced coordination effort

The PERI 3D concrete printer is called the BOD2. It is the only second-generation concrete printer on the market and is used in residential construction and the production of precast parts. It is also the fastest of its kind. For example, the production of 1m² of double-skin wall takes only about five minutes.

The use of the 3D concrete printer significantly reduces the need for skilled workers and also the coordination effort on construction sites. Various trades are integrated directly into the printing process.

The construction process with the BOD2 is automated and saves valuable time as well as personnel costs. Two people are sufficient to operate it. One person controls the printer with a laptop, tablet or smartphone. The 3D building model has already been converted into specific instructions for the BOD2 via software before the start of construction. The second person makes sure that the printer has adequate printing material.

Any locally sourced, 3D-printable mortar or concrete – up to a grain size of 8 mm – can be used for this.

For example, empty pipes can be inserted during the printing process and cable ducts for the electrics can also be printed. In addition, other trades can be eliminated, such as facade work. The work of surveyors is also reduced in the case of buildings with free geometries.

A characteristic feature of BOD2 buildings is the 3D print optics of the surfaces. Apart from unique structures, surfaces with a smooth look are also easily possible. There are hardly any other limits for the printer – showers, fireplaces, kitchen substructures can be printed without any problems.

Further design possibilities are offered by playing with overhangs as well as different heights and widths of the print layers.

Design flexibility With the BOD2, the design possibilities are almost endless – from individual shapes to special surfaces and colours, almost anything is possible. The BOD2 enables straight, curved and even rounded shapes to be constructed at no extra cost, which would not be possible without special formwork

After being intensively involved with 3D concrete printing technology for years, PERI Group acquired a stake in COBOD, the technology leader in 3D concrete printers in 2018. Since then, PERI Group have been working together with the Danish start-up to further develop the technology and open up the market.

PERI Group prints the first residential house in Germany

Go-ahead for Germany's first 3D-printed residential building.

In the summer of 2020, 3D printing easily goes through all the regulatory approval processes and proves its readiness for the market. The two-storey detached house in Beckum comprises a living area of around 80 m2 per storey.

PERI Group prints the first apartment building in Europe

Only a short time later PERI Group achieves its next success.

Outlook

After around six weeks of printing, PERI Group completes the shell of Europe's first apartment building from the 3D printer in Wallenhausen, Bavaria. The residential building has a full basement and provides space for five flats with a total of around 380 m2 of living space over three floors.

PERI Group’s 3D concrete printing team is working flat out to bring this still new technology to the international market. Jan-Peter Graumann, Global Business Development Manager at PERI GmbH proudly states: “3D printing is our baby. One vision resulted in cooperation with the Danish start-up COBOD. Together we have made the technology ready for the construction site. In Germany, we already offer an extensive concrete printing portfolio with a wide range of services. Of course, we also want to make the technology available to customers from all over the world in the near future. We have set our sights on the USA as the next step". ■
