Dear Members,
Happy New Year!
The world is changing. So is business. Every day there are new technologies, new medicines, new routes to cleaner power. Our global team of lawyers works across practice areas to help clients to think ahead and shape the future. Find out how you could make innovation possible with a career in law at hoganlovells.com/graduates
I hope you had a great Winter Vacation. Freshers, definitely don’t be concerned if you never got beyond reviewing supervision one of Roman. The vacation is meant to be a break from work and there’s plenty of time until exam term.
Good luck to everyone who’s been writing applications for vacation schemes. Early Lent tends to be filled with assessment centres and Watson Glaser tests. It can be a stressful time with rejection emails and having to constantly rearrange supervisions, but just know that it’ll all pay off in the end. There will be lots of careers events in Lent term, which will be designed to help with assessment centres and interviews.
Lent term is set to be packed with events, so keep an eye on our Facebook and download the CULS app, made by CULS’s incredible webmaster, to keep up to date with this
term’s events. We will also be hosting the Annual Dinner Ball towards the end of term, which will celebrate the handing over of the Society to the new committee.
The Executive elections will be taking place on the 2rd February. Details on how to run have been emailed out, and can also be found under the blog section of the CULS website.
Finally, a huge thank you to the CULS committee for running such a fantastic Michaelmas term, and all their hard work over the vacation in preparation for Lent. Best wishes,
Lucia Azzi CULS President 2017-18
Manifesto submission opens Friday 19th January at 9am
Manifesto submission closes Friday 26th January at 5pm
Hustings: Thursday 1st February
Election: Friday 2nd February (9am - 5pm)
The Positions you can run for:
President Vice-President
Secretary Treasurer
Certain Requirements to Fulfil: To stand for election, candidates must be members of the Society and undergraduate members of the University of Cambridge. Joint candidatures are forbidden. To be eligible to run, the candidate must be in statu pupillari until the end of their term of office. This means that you will still be an undergraduate at Cambridge University in January 2019.
The Manifesto:
You must create an A4 manifesto which includes a photo of yourself, no more than 250 words on why you are running for the position, and also the name of the Society member nominating you,
and the name of the Society member seconding your nomination. You must email this to Lucia Azzi (president@culs. org.uk) by 5pm of 26/1/18. Please send it in either word or PDF format. The current President and Vice-President will be the returning officers for the election.
It is highly recommended that you speak to the individual currently in the role that you are thinking of running for before submitting a nomination. Being on the CULS Executive is a very timedemanding job.
Current Executive: Lucia Azzi | President president@culs.org.uk
Sophie Lawrence | Vice-President vice-president@culs.org.uk
Charmaine Clubb | Secretary secretary@culs.org.uk
Cara Fung | Treasurer treasurer@culs.org.uk
A brief description of the roles is included below.
President:
The President is responsible for the overall running and direction of the society as well as securing sponsorship deals, which facilitate all of the society’s
activities. The role requires a thorough knowledge of the Society’s infrastructure and cross-departmental activities. Prior administrative and commercial negotiating experience is highly useful for this role.
Vice-President:
The Vice President supports the president in establishing the overall running of the society. The VP continuously liaises with all the departments of the society along with the President and ensures the smooth running of all the society’s activities. Another job of the VP is organising stash. Stash is vital for building up funds, which facilitate the many fantastic events CULS puts on.
Secretary:
The Secretary is responsible for assisting the President in a) managing and updating the infrastructure of the Society and b) keeping all members regularly updated on all of the events the Society puts on. The Secretary will undertake training on how to manage the membership database, email system and social media accounts. Furthermore, the secretary must send out
a weekly newsletter to all members, as well as produce the Term Card before the start of each term.
Treasurer:
The Treasurer is responsible for managing the funds that CULS has. As the largest student run law society in Europe, these funds are very significant. The Treasurer works very closely with the president to manage the sponsorship funds and ensure that money is allocated appropriately across all of the activities that CULS puts on. The Treasurer also will reimburse anyone for the expenses that they incur in the course of executing CULS work
