Youngster’s Garbage Day initiative helps tidy up Gananoque

EMC News - Listen up, Gananoque, there’s a new marshal in town, Brodie Leroy Cote, and he’s here to clean up the streets. Literally. And while he’s at it, he wants to make sure you clean up your act, too. “I think this is great, said Sandra Wright of Executive Secretarial Services. “Brodie has to be commended for this. This is wonderful. I can’t believe it, and I had to come out and help. At the age of ten, most youngsters are busy sleeping on a Saturday morning, or watching cartoons or playing video games or whatever. They are not out trying to make their town a better place by getting rid of the garbage, one piece at a time. “I think this is a great initiative, that Brodie has brought people together in a common cause to clean up the community, said MPP Steve Clark, Leeds-Grenville. “We should be encouraging our young people to get involved in community events and I really want to congratulate Brodie on his project today. Brodie was quite surprised that the political forces had come out to support his event. He really had not been expecting them. “I came out because I think it’s great that young people would take the initiative to organize something like this, to try to get

people to come out and clean up our community, said Gananoque mayor Erika Demchuk. “That’s most definitely what we want, for our community to be beautiful and garbage free. We try to encourage all of our citizens to make sure that that happens. Looking after your own property, just picking up any little thing helps to make things better for everyone. For a 10 year-old boy to try and organize this is absolutely fantastic. He’s certainly the wave of the future for our young people. “This is a great initiative by Brodie, added Leeds-Grenville MP Gord Brown. “Often we, as politicians, hear from people who want us to provide all the answers and all the solutions, but as they say, if you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. So here we are today picking up garbage, doing our part to be that solution. The Town of Gananoque is pretty clean, so it will be a hunt to find some garbage, since the mayor and the council and the Board of Works crew do a great job of looking after things, but Brodie is making sure to take care of anything they might have missed. And not only the politicians are impressed with Brodie. He found sponsors for his event at Sweet 101, Canadian Tire, See GARBAGE page 3
