Operational funds for community pool comes to budget discussions

FEATURE

By STACEY ROY sroy@perfprint.ca EMC News - When Smiths Falls Council next meets for the 2013 budget the financial request from The Hub community pool will be on the agenda in hopes of bringing some closure to this request. Coun. Shawn Pankow asked for the item to be added to the next budget session, adding the grass roots organization’s request for the $50, 000 from the 2012 budget and $92, 000 in new money in 2013 is necessary to ensure operation of the pool this year. The pool “provides tremendous benefit for our community,” Pankow said. Council will meet once confirmed numbers are available for the town’s 2010 Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) are available by the end of this month. Opening of the pool is the organization’s first step in providing an array of sports and recreation activities for area residents from their location at the Gallipeau Centre. Coun. Ken Graham verbally supported the idea of a community pool, but noted all municipalities including Smiths Falls are struggling to bring their budgets in line for 2013 and moving forward. The Hub is asking for all surrounding municipalities to provide operational funding for the community pool in 2013 and subsequent years. “I think they’re going to find that a bigger hurdle,” Graham said. Mayor Dennis Staples is working with The Hub to have them attend an upcoming regional mayors meeting where he hopes to get some clarity on whether all municipalities will be able to find some dollars for this project. Coun. Chris Cummings agreed saying the dream of a community pool could be within reach with everyone pulling together.

“I know this is a big number but it’s not a big number if everyone comes to the table,” Cummings said. Graham asked for town staff to bring an updated list of what community initiatives they traditionally support to see if those funds should be reallocated to reach more people through the pool. Ultimately, he said the town only has so much money and hard decisions will have to be made. “When streets are crumbling under our feet and sewers need to be reconstructed it’s really hard for people to give money away,” Graham said. A Hub press release from February said they are approaching the communities of Smiths Falls, ElizabethtownKitley, Merrickville, Montague and Rideau Lakes for funding to cover costs such as wages, signage, supplies, training and administration costs. “We want to be clear that our objective is to be a selfsufficient organization with limited, if any reliance on municipal (taxpayer) funding. To get there, we will need financial support over the course of the first few years,” the release states. Logo contest open to all While work continues toward the renovation of the pool facility, The Hub has launched a logo contest for the organization and is challenging area artists to submit their ideas. The design must be an original creation and submitted to their email: info@thehubrecreation. com before April 15, 2013. The design should reflect the organization’s focus on sports, recreation and athletics. The winner will earn bragging rights and a full year membership to The Hub! Updates and contact information for the The Hub are available via their website: www.thehubrecreation.com.
