EMC News - The images of birds in flight, cats reaching up to the sky and smiling children’s faces now greets students, staff and visitors at the entrance of Chimo Elementary School thanks to an innovative arts program. The wall-length mural in the main hall of the school was fully sponsored by the parent council and is student led to depict their vision of key school virtues. “It’s about getting kids talking about the virtues,” said Michelle Simons, core French teacher who is leading the children in this project. “They’re very focused.” About 20 students in grades 6 to 8 were challenged to create images that depict the words: empathy, caring, fairness, resilience, respect, honesty and responsibility and then paint them on the hallway wall. “They’ve been wonderful. It’s been really great,” said project artist, Marcio Melo, a Brazilian artist who now lives in Quebec. He is guiding the students in the project. The mural creation project was three days in length with the first day focused on con-

cept creation, the second day on sketching the images on the wall and the last day (Feb. 7) on painting and completing the final touches. Melo finds his inspiration for these school-based projects from the children he works with as well as aboriginal art. “I find that it is such a beautiful heritage from Canada we should explore that,”

Melo said. Throughout his 12 years of working with students in this creative format, Melo has come to appreciate the longterm benefits of working in the arts. “The greatest thing is about confidence,” Melo added. “At the end it’s their work that’s been highlighted on the walls.” Simons is pleased to intro-

duce this project to the school as it enforces key curriculumbased skills such as fine motor skills, co-operation, leadership and inferring, yet the arts is not financially supported by the Ontario government. “They need to promote it because some kids learn through the arts,” Simons said. The ability to enhance the students’ leadership skills

Rideau Cup sled dog race resets for Feb. 23 in Newboro EMC News - Organizers of the annual Rideau Cup Sled Dog and Skijoring Race are excited about trying once again, to run the third race on Feb. 23 in Newboro. Weather has hampered this event consistently since 2007 making it very frustrating and challenging for the organizers and volunteers. However, with the recent snow and decent long-range weather forecast the event planners have their fingers crossed for a successful race. Race Marshall Martyn Rennick explained this one day,

25 mile, six dog team, middistance race for the dog sledders gives all levels of racers an opportunity to try the sport or hone up on their racing skills for a much longer race planned in March to be held out of province. Duane Ramsay, assistant to Rennick, has encouraged offering both novice and experience skijoring races. The four-mile course offers an excellent terrain for all levels of racers. Individuals on cross country skis are harnessed to one or two dogs to race over the route located between Newboro and

Crosby. Chair Brian Patterson is excited with the venue. Breakfast will be served in the Newboro Community Hall starting at 7:30 a.m., a canteen will be on site at the starting gate and a full course roast beef dinner will follow the award presentations late in the afternoon in the hall. All proceeds will go toward the Rideau Cup and the Newboro Community Hall. Notwithstanding, everyone is encouraged to enjoy a meal and meet the mushers. The purse has remained the same; $6,000 to be shared be-

tween all racers. New this year will be a Racers Choice Award and a Volunteer’s Choice Award. Training for all volunteers helping with the race was held earlier in January, but if folks are still interested in helping, let Brian know by calling 613272-3059. Over 70 volunteers make this event successful. More information is available on the Township of Rideau Lakes web site www.twprideaulakes.on.ca under “links” and Newboro Dog Sled Race. through this project will be available in the future when plans to expand the mural project into other areas of the school takes shape. “They (students) will be working with the next cohort of kids who do it,” Simons said. Future murals will incorporate other students in the school with the mentorship of their senior peers.
