EMC News - Trenton The historic Quinte Hotel (Sherwood Forest Inn,) was claimed by fire on Monday, November 5, involving dozens of local firefighters and covering the downtown in layers of thick smoke all day. “This was a very upsetting day in the city,” said Mayor John Williams. Quinte West detachment OPP Inspector Mike Reynolds said they got the call around 9 a.m., along with the fire stations which re-
sponded immediately, cordoning off the area. “The hotel was fully engulfed,” he said. “No one was injured and all are accounted for. The fire department contained the scene.” He said the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called and is working with the Crime Unit to determine the cause. “I’ve never seen anything like it before,” he said. He noted they evacuated the businesses and apartments in the downtown Please see “Fire” on page 14
Storm that wasn’t spins into council chambers By Ray Yurkowski
EMC News - Brighton Tempers flared at the municipal council meeting on Monday night in the aftermath of last week’s brush with Hurricane Sandy. During a discussion detailing how well prepared public works staff were
in advance of the storm, Councillor Craig Kerr asked about a fallen light standard at King Edward Park. “When I arrived at the scene, everything was cleaned up, the wires were cut and there was no safety hazard,” said public works director Andrew Drzewiecki.
“As far as I know, it was done by Rowley Electric.” “Is that who normally does that sort of work for us?” asked Kerr. “No, we have a contract with another company to work on the streetlights,” said Drzewiecki. Please see “Storm” on page 3
