southern part of Hastings County. Baeker added that the county was not one of the contributing partners. “Maybe it should be included,” he admitted. “Obviously, it’s a place people look to for culinary and local food.” Chair Paul Whitley noted that a lot of work has been done mapping 750 cultural assets of the area, with an overlap between tourism
EMC News - Brighton - In little more than a year, the cenotaph committee members have realized the completion of a new war memorial in time for Remembrance Day 2012. Now, they’re putting the final touches on a dedication ceremony scheduled in just three weeks. The next task is to light the monument, and to have the work completed before the ceremony, slated for 2 p.m. on October 20. A motion from municipal representatives Deputymayor Tom Rittwage and Councillor Emily Rowley will ask council, at their October 1 meeting, to extend financing to cover the project. But, pointed out CAO Gayle Frost, more than $25,000 remains of the $35,000 approved by council to be borrowed from reserves and repaid through fund-raising efforts. “The lighting was not on anybody’s mind until that monument went up,” explained Rittwage. “Once we saw it, we knew we had to have it lit. You can’t have something like that sitting in the dark.” The cenotaph will be dedicated by Sergeant Stephen Drinkwater, a third-generation Canadian volunteer with ten years of service including three Afghanistan tours as rifleman, sniper and section commander. On his third tour, the task force commander recognized him with a commendation for outstanding operations. “Drinkwater represents all who have passed along the Highway of Heroes over the past ten years,” said committee chair retired BrigadierGeneral Ian Douglas. The theme for cenotaph ceremonies is usually seen as

EMC News - Quinte West A presentation by Greg Baeker of Millier, Dickinson, Blais to the Economic Development and Revitalization Committee at city hall was received with some controversy. The $9-million four-year program with funding from Hastings County, Belleville and Quinte West stirred up some debate. The “shared vision for action” in festi-
vals, events, arts, museums and galleries and heritage attractions is hoped to draw more tourists to the region by promoting its combined cultural assets. “We need to share our different strengths,” Baeker said. Sally Freeman noted that the Bay of Quinte Tourist Council is already mapping cultural assets of the area. “I am concerned this will sit on the shelf or be a duplicate,”
she said. “We all worked very hard to figure it out on a web site. We don’t want to all do the same thing.” Baeker said he will make sure it is not a duplicate. Freeman added, “We want to work together, not be two separate entities.” The question was asked why Prince Edward County was not included. Linda Lisle, manager of economic development, said this plan includes only the
