Research shows people have little choice in major life events EMC News - “Take two steps forward if your family has a car. Take one step back if you have experienced physical violence,” said Sam Davidson, The Table’s advocacy coordinator, as she led the Community Action Training group in Perth in an exercise called the American Dream. The group members started the exercise lined up shoulder to shoulder in a straight line. At the end of the exercise the group members were scattered, with just a couple of members at the front, more in the middle and many in the back. Sam announced that she had a prize for the ¿rst person who reached her on the count of three. She counted: no one moved a muscle. The people closest to her may not have moved because they had been singled out as being more privileged. The people at the
back may not have moved because they could see that there were too many other people to clamber past. Why bother? Finally, one lone person in the middle of the pack walked forward to collect the prize, $5. The purpose of this exercise was to show that individuals generally have little choice over the major life circumstances that research tells us underpin success. The idea of the ‘American Dream’, where hard work results in achievement and wealth, is not always true. A ¿nancially secure neighbour may not have been born with a silver spoon in his or her mouth, but chances are he/she worked hard, enjoyed good health, was encouraged to stay in school, had a supportive family and/ or a mentor, and more. This exercise helps the group to think criti-
cally about the systems within society that make the playing ¿eld uneven. The Table’s Community Action Training is building a community within a community. It has attracted a diverse group in many ways - age, social, political, and economic backgrounds, lived experience, education, etc. The 22 participants meet on common ground every Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Table Community Food Centre. Over 15 weeks they will examine how power operates in society, look at human rights, apply critical thinking to the deluge of information we face day to day, study how government works, look at the big issues affecting our community members and to learn the steps required to run a campaign or action and hopefully apply that learning
to make change in the community. No mean feat. We hope that group members will stay on after group has ended to form our of¿cial Social Justice group and continue to work towards making changes on some of the issues that are important to our fellow community members; access to services, transportation, shelter, and food. Five weeks into our group, it is obvious that the biggest lessons participants will learn are from one another. Every week two challenge cards are issued randomly to group members. Recently a participant was asked to research the issue of transportation in a rural setting. She reported back to the group that before she began to dig she wondered “What issue?” Finding out that transportation is a major issue for many

people was a real eye- opening experience for her. Another group member knows all too well about the issues of transportation; he hitchhikes in for the 9:30 a.m. group. He gets out to the highway extra early so that he can be sure to be on time. When asked why he makes the effort he replies that it is important to him to get out and stay involved in his community.
